I enjoyed the description of the main character's life with her mother, but the second half of the book seemed very rushed. At one point, it seemed like the author decided to trash their original plan and just inserted a revised version of the ending events. The love story was also somewhat lacking, although I could at least believe they were beginning to fall in love, if not head over heels.

I was also not a fan of the supernatural events which take place. They played such an insignificant role in the story that they just made suspension of disbelief impossible. The supernatural events reveal secrets which could have easily been discovered in normal ways. Furthermore, I found the explanation of many of these supernatural events silly.

Happy ending

What an awesome book. Although you may not feel this way when you start reading it. This is about a mother who was dis-inherited by her family when she ran off and got married. She ended up raising her daughter, Rebecca, on her own. They did not have much money and she raised her daughter the way she felt best on teaching her how to be proper. An offer came up where Rebecca could marry Sir Montague and live at Willow Castle. This is not a marriage of love, Sir Montague needs to marry in order to get his inheritance since his father's death. What happens after this is amazing, horrifying, hateful, vindictive, and heroic. A very good read, you must read to the end, hopefully you will be as pleased with the book as I have been.

I loved this story. I only wish there was a sequel because I didn't want I to end! This is the first book I've read by this Author. I plan on reading more!

I chose this book because it looked like a mystery romance! I loved the story but now wish there was a sequel.

Easy reading. Unexpected ending.

Not the best book I ever read but interesting enough to read to the ending. For the most part, a typical gothic read. However, it does have an unusual ending just about the part where you think you have it all figured out. Glad I read to the end.

Rebecca hoping that marriage would be a better life. A crumbling castle, and he is older, cold and distant. A castle and the secrets are undermining her. A good Gothic type mystery with a little romance.

I have always loved Victoria Holt and this novel was in that mould. The first two thirds were really good and then something happened and I can't quite fathom what the author was doing. It had a supernatural twist (I think, it was not clear) that spoiled it because it seemed silly. This changed the course of the story which then seemed all over the shore, it was like being on the whip at a funfair. not sure where it was headed. I liked it and enjoyed reading it but I felt the author had lost their way and the confusion ruined an otherwise good story for me. I would read more in the hope that this defect has been corrected.

This book has everything I would want in a gothic romance from the evil villain, the lovely heroine, the spooky castle with a tainted past and of course the hero. I liked that it was written in first person as it just drew me into her world and held my attention.

Entertaining and interesting

it started out to be your typical gothic romance with all the right players, but then it really took some strange turns. I was somewhat surprised. overall it proved to be interning and entertaining.

Hmm...

I am wondering if there was some sort of strange page limit enforced by the publishers.... This was a fantastic novel up until the point where it abruptly ends. This is the single worst ending I have ever read in a book.

written after the old gothic style-a short entertaining read...I enjoyed it. The exchange with the devil was done rather well

while it started slow I liked where it went but then seemed to get lost. as if in edits something got dropped.
