Hello!

So thrilled to meet you!

In addition to being a writer, I'm a tarot reader, yogi, and fashion lover. All of my books talk about fashion because it's been one of my passions since childhood.

Previously, I worked for over ten years as a lawyer before giving up my career to write. In 2005, I was responsible for the business affairs of a fashion designer where I developed a penchant for couture.

My first novel, J'adore New York, became an international bestseller. The sequel, J'ADORE PARIS, was published in 2013. I am currently working on the next J'Adore novel. Stay tuned for details!

I loved this book! The Devil Wears Prada meets the lawyer world. My two favorite subjects in books high fashion and a hardworking career. The character of Catherine is a likable character and one that the reader will come to love. Some of the other characters in the book will keep you guessing as to where their loyalties lie. This book is the perfect debate book for Isabelle Lafleche.

Synopsis:

Catherine Lambert loves fashion and the law. One of only three applicants, out of a pool of thirty, selected to transfer from Edwards & White’s Paris office to its Manhattan headquarters, and the only one assigned to the corporate group, Catherine is determined to continue impressing her bosses with her diligence and legal prowess. Meeting the firm’s billable hours quota means long days and short nights, especially when two heinously spiteful secretaries are conspiring to undermine Catherine’s reputation and efforts to please both the firm’s clients and partners.

Making matters worse, one of the firm’s particularly powerful and obnoxious clients propositions her, actually referring to her as his “favorite little lawyer.” When she refuses his advances, he accuses her of becoming intoxicated at a charity event and embarrassing him, several colleagues, and their wives. His behavior places Catherine into a quagmire and threatens to derail her career.

Things start looking up when yet another client, Jeffrey Richardson, seems to show genuine interest in her. But is he too good to be true? She is just starting to believe that she might be able to “have it all” when Jeffrey requests that she engage in unethical conduct on his behalf that could ultimately lead to her disbarment and serious consequences for the firm. Did Jeffrey ever really care for her or was she merely his means to a financial end? Yet again, Catherine finds herself at a crossroads, questioning her career choices to date … and what shape she wants her future to take.

Review:

First-time novelist Isabelle Lafleche spent over ten years working in New York City, Montreal, and Toronto as a corporate attorney with a large law firm and on Wall Street. It was while representing a Quebec-based fashion designer that she developed her own interest in haute cauture. With her background, Lafleche brings an authentic voice to the story of the young, ambitious, fashion-conscious Catherine.

J’adore New York was a delightful surprise. Lafleche expertly depicts the stress under which professionals like Catherine labor and turns what could have been nothing more than a frothy romp about a fashion-obsessed female attorney into a multi-layered exploration of corporate intrigue and greed, ethical dilemmas, and, most importantly, the creative and resourceful ways in which we can follow our dreams and still manage to earn our daily bread.

Catherine is young, idealistic, and enthusiastic. Upon arriving in New York, she is surprised to find herself assigned to a corner office. But as Mimi, the office administrator, explains, the arrangement is only temporary, pending the completion of the office Catherine is destined to inhabit. After all, Mimi reminds Catherine, “No one gets a corner office until their tenth year at the firm. But don’t you worry, in time you’ll get yours.” When Catherine is quickly thrust into situations that test her ethical and moral boundaries, she is forced to re-evaluate her choices and decide what matters most to her. Ten years is an awfully long time to put in eighty-hour work weeks in order to earn a view of Manhattan while continuing to toil in the office, rather than get outside and actually enjoy the city. Catherine is gradually revealed by Lafleche to be a multi-dimensioned, nuanced protagonist, a testament not only to Lafleche’s impeccable grasp of her subject matter, but also her ability to translate it into thought-provoking fiction.

It may not be a previously unexplored theme, but Lafleche puts her own unique stamp on it. The action never slows, making it hard to put the book down as the dramatic tension builds. As one reviewer pointed out, it is rare in women’s fiction to actually see a lead female character working. Often, the story’s drama is centered around the character’s life outside the professional arena, involving romance, children, etc. But in J’adore New York, the office machinations and manipulations are the focus of the action. Readers are treated not only to the exchanges between members of the firm, but also some of Catherine’s work product, as she is known among the staff for being adept at translating legalese into readily understandable prose. To be sure, that is a valuable talent.

Lafleche surrounds Catherine with a thoroughly believable cast of supporting characters, including Bonnie Clark, the partner in charge of mergers and acquisitions to whom Catherine reports. Bonnie has survived brutal competition to secure her partnership and, over the years, has become adept at office politics, client manipulation, and honed a dictatorial supervisory style that strikes fear in the hearts of junior attorneys. Rikash is the loyal, flamboyant, and efficient legal assistant every attorney dreams of.

There is the elusive and mysterious Antoine, impeccably groomed and tight-lipped. Is he a friend or foe? Lafleche keeps her readers guessing. And, of course, Jeffrey Richardson figures prominently in the storyline. Charming, handsome, and powerful, Catherine cannot help but be attracted to him, even though she is handling his upcoming IPO. When Catherine finally understands Jeffrey’s motives and plan, she is sickened, but has to find a way to outsmart Jeffrey and protect the firm, the investors, and her license to practice law. In Lafleche’s deft hands, Catherine is as clever as she is beautiful. This is one part of the story where Lafleche can be forgiven for taking dramatic license for the sake of satisfying her readers.

The other aspects of the story where readers will need to suspend their disbelief concern Catherine’s brief lapses in judgment, as when she has Rikash attempt to cover for her with the firm’s partners so that she can sneak out to attend a Dior sample sale. It is hard to believe that a senior managing partner walking into a junior attorney’s office in the middle of the workday to find the attorney and her assistant engaged in an impromptu fashion show would not be more disturbed and enraged than the character of Scott becomes. Such behavior, including ignoring clients’ calls for several hours, would most likely result in much more than a verbal warning. And it was difficult to believe that Catherine, having accomplished so much, would jeopardize her career in that manner. But again, Lafleche makes Catherine and Rikash such an endearing pair that forgiveness from her readers is definitely in order.

Lafleche is reportedly at work on the sequel to J’adore New York, an auspicious beginning to Lafleche’s career as a novelist, which was apparently predicted by a psychic she met in New York. That chance encounter prompted her to resign from her firm, move back home to her native Canada, and enroll in creative writing classes. Lafleche is living proof that, just as Catherine learns by the book’s conclusion, “your passion is waiting for your courage to catch up.” I look forward to reading more of her work.

I was really disappointed by this book. I never really got a feeling for the main character Catherine, and for someone who is French and moving to NYC, I felt that the book used too many American colloquialisms that a European would just not even think to use. Plus, for a character that was so dedicated to her work and doing the right thing, I was confused by a lot of her choices throughout the book. Definitely not worth the time it took to get through it.

Ugh. Complete crap. I liked the cover and took a chance. What a waste. Terrible characters, terrible writing, boring storyline, main character was a completely self-obsessed loser. How anyone is supposed to believe that this woman is a high powered lawyer is beyond me. More like a talentless Bridget Jones without the humour.

I was so so so thrilled when Isabelle Laflèche told me she would be more than happy to send me a copy of her (absolutely fabulous) debut novel. Let me tell you this: I finished it on the same day it arrived in my mailbox. It was seriously addictive and I loved it so much. J'Adore New York is the third book I've devoured in a day this year and I'm more than happy to gush about how perfect it is to wrap up a fantastic year!

Do you get the feeling when you know the book you're reading is a total gem and you've got a really strong feeling that you'll love it just from reading the first chapter? For me, this usually happens when I read a Sophie Kinsella book, or any by my favourite authors (Paige Toon, Lindsey Kelk, Jane Costello, etc.) so I'm proud to announce that Isabelle Laflèche is joining that list! From the moment I flipped to chapter 2, I knew I would love this book. I mean, don't get me wrong, I wouldn't know what to expect when I read the first few pages, right? But J'Adore New York is different for this matter. Maybe it's due to my longing to read it, or the really interesting plot or maybe I really adore Isabelle's writing style.

Either way, I loved the book! Sound the alarm and throw the confetti! It's been a while since I've read a book that gives me a thrill to finish it as soon as I can because I'm too excited for what Catherine Lambert, lawyer extraordinaire has to offer, or her glamorous life in the Big Apple. Ooh, and have I mentioned? Catherine is French! I have never come across a French heroine so she has to be the first and it is very refreshing to see things from a French perspective! I wonder if it's true that the reason French women stay so thin and slim is because they have accelerated metabolism?

Anyway, back to the book. Hmmm. What should I write about it without sounding like a total gushing idiot? In short, I loved it. It was a different sort of chick lit - very clever, smart and high profile-ish chick lit (Catherine is a lawyer in a big firm in NYC so you get the picture - haute couture, fine dining, etc.). With Catherine as the guide, the book takes readers to the secret lives of lawyers working in well-established law firms to the ugly truth behind every deal (enter bitch boss from hell) and also the glitz and glamour of the lives of the elites on Upper East Side. Think of it as an adult-version of Gossip Girl (I'm a GG obsesso, sorry!).

Catherine Lambert - gorgeous, French, well-mannered and driven. Seriously, she's such a wonderful character to read about, especially when the book is written from her point of view. Everything was so different yet familiar through her eyes, am I making sense or am I blinded by the charms of Catherine Lambert, French glamazon? At first, she seemed like a really headstrong, determined power maniac, but as the book progresses, I soon warmed up to her and her love for Dior. Besides Catherine, there's one more character who I absolutely adored and that's Rikash, her assistant! Kind, funny, sweet and super supportive. He's Indian and gay and real sweetheart, his presence made the book light and fluffy but with substance at the same time. If I ever work as a lawyer in a multi-million firm, searching for a Rikash as my assistant would be imperative.

To top it off, the ending was beautiful, unexpected and promises a continuation - psst! J'Adore Paris is out next May! - I can hardly wait! It was an utterly fabulous debut by Isabelle Laflèche which left me wanting more of Catherine's story as she continues her journey to Paris with a handsome boyfriend! I am so so so glad I read it as it's one of the best books I've read. Trust me, you'll love this. It's light, funny and sharp - I devoured it like a delectable mille-feuille!

Catherine Lambert is thrilled when she applies for, and is offered, the opportunity to transfer from the Paris office of her prestigious law firm to the New York one. Catherine has always been a lover of fashion and can't wait to explore all that New York has to offer her.

What Catherine is not counting on is the fact that New York will be far more challenging that she initially anticipated. Catherine is under constant pressure to meet her billable hours quota, and her bosses aren't afraid to put more work on her desk. She thinks that she may be developing a friendship with someone in the office, but then she finds out that he is transferring to the Paris office. A client crosses a line with her and yet she is blamed for the fact that he can't keep her hands to himself. Catherine is just about ready to give up when she meets Jeffrey Richardson, a handsome and powerful client who is smitten with her. Suddenly her visions of what New York would be like are coming true: candlelit dinners and weekends away with a sexy man. But things seem a little too good to be true, and they are. Jeffrey makes a request of Catherine that complying with would go against every ethical fibre in her being, and she must decide how badly she wants to succeed in New York.

"J'adore New York" is the debut novel from Isabelle Lafleche, and I look forward to reading more from her. The story flowed, and she kept it interesting even when explaining technical laws. It probably helped that Lafleche was a lawyer in Quebec and she used her prior experience to explain the trickier terms to those of us knowing little about the law. Despite its length of 390 pages, there's lots going on and before I realized it, I was at the end.

I loved Catherine, the main character. She brings to New York her optimism and enthusiasm, and even when New York shows its true colours, Catherine tries to hold on these qualities in herself. She spends some time soul-searching, to discover what it is that she really stands for, and those parts of the book quickly became my favourites. The underlying message was that our future is not set in stone, but is rather a result of the choices that we make. Another stand-out character was the flamboyant and funny Rikash, Catherine's secretary in New York. Although he is a secondary character, he manages to keep things light, and I enjoyed the scenes he appeared in.

"J'adore New York" takes a serious topic, shady deals and corporate corruption, and manages to make it both fresh and fun. The result is the perfect beach read- light and easy to read, yet containing enough substance to make things interesting. It provides an insiders look into what really happens inside the walls of a prestigious law firm.

Catherine Lambert, a Parisian lawyer who loves style and a good challenge, takes the opportunity to transfer to her firm’s New York office. New York- the fashion, the glamour, the excitement- Catherine cannot wait for her new chapter in life. But New York turns out to be nothing what she expected. The workload and office hours are much worse than what she put in at Paris, the employees are gossipers, her boss very well may be from hell, and her clients are self-absorbed a-holes. But Catherine is determined to make her move a successful one, and she throws herself into her new life. When one of her clients expresses interest in Catherine, it looks like her New York life might finally be looking up. Or is an offer about to Catherine’s career in jeopardy?

First, I loved the cover of J’Adore New York by Isabelle Lafleche. That caught my eye right away. And once I started reading, I was swept away in Catherine’s story. This is an exceptionally well written and intriguing novel from a debut author, and one that I think should go on your to-read list. Chick lit fans will love the glamorous settings: from the New York backdrop, the stylish outfits, and the love triangle that Catherine finds herself in. I will be looking forward to more from Isabelle Lafleche, and be sure to get your copy of J’Adore New York.

So disappointed in this book: by the dimwitted heroine (who should have been disbarred or fired for her behavior), her lack of discretion, her shopping and drinking in the middle of the workday - it did not resemble any law firm I have ever witnessed. I was also appalled by the poor proofreading (defence instead of defense, etc.), although that might have been her editor's fault.

The book appealed to me because of the fashion involved, but the characters were lackluster, the dialogue was too much and too juvenile, and the plot was too cliche. Not worth buying, which I did, but cute if you want something fast to read without having to think too deeply about anything.

From: Lilac Wolf and Stuff

The cover shows a gorgeous woman with the most stylish pink suit-dress I've ever seen, you know you are in for a style conscious character. And yes, Catherine Lambert loves fashion! It plays an important roll to the plot as well.

So you know Catherine finally lands the transfer to New York she has been working so hard to get. She wants to become partner and is determined to work herself to death to get it. Okay not literally, but she works such crazy hours I lose the ability to see what the point it. If lawyers really work like that in the big firms, how very sad for them.

She has to keep learning the lesson that she can't trust anyone but a few clothes friends. The competition is beyond fierce, these guys make lions look tame...enough plot you have to read it to learn more.

The characters are all well written, the plot is thick. It's a great story. My only criticism is Catherine's voice. She is supposed to be French, but her name is pretty white-bread and the voice used in the story is written in regular American English with well-known french phrases thrown in here and there. I think it should have been written as someone from who had been living in France their entire lives would have spoken. It looks like the author is at least French-Canadian so I was a little surprised by this. (update: after thinking about this I wonder if the editors didn't take change the voice)

But after all that I don't regret reading it for a minute. It was a fantastic tale that I couldn't put down. Catherine must learn life lessons, fight for her survival and maybe...just maybe she will find love.

When Catherine Lambert leaves her law firm’s Paris office for the glitzy allure of New York City, she’s not quite prepared for the whirlwind that soon becomes her life: a maze of racking up billable hours, battling diva bosses and struggling with interoffice dynamics. As an accomplished lawyer in a top firm, Catherine has dreams of making partner and donning the latest Dior fashions — preferably at the same time. But shall the two ever meet? And when her time at the firm begins to sour, is it time to walk away?

Isabelle Laflèche’s J’adore New York is a type of women’s fiction with which I’m quite familiar: young woman arrives in the big city with a law degree and big dreams; young woman is derailed by vindictive, unkind colleagues; young woman must decide if having the big job is really worth the mess of it all — and if she can stand giving up love, family and freedom in exchange for the corner office.

Yes, friends, we’ve heard it all before — but that didn’t mean it didn’t work here. Laflèche combines enough unique characteristics in Catherine that I didn’t feel like I was reading the same book over and over again. And Catherine — graceful, intelligent, powerful, French – wasn’t a heroine with which I already felt familiar. It’s cliche to say, “Oh, she’s a great female role model!” but truly, she was. Where the plot could have detoured with Catherine suddenly becoming a flustered, swooning lady who throws all her good sense out the window for a man, she didn’t. She was better than that. And thank goodness, because that’s precisely the type of book I want to throw out the window.

The plot here moves along quickly, though not much seems to happen. It’s all about Catherine’s internal struggle: choosing happiness; love over doubt; freedom over a stifling atmosphere that no longer makes her happy. While this isn’t a traditional coming-of-age story, it is a book about a woman rediscovering her passion . . . and her descriptions of couture and sample sales had me drooling. Laflèche never gets bogged down in the details, though, a la “Sex And The City” — and thank goodness. While I enjoy an occasional mention of a gorgeous shoes or sumptuous fabrics, I hate when books feel like a shout-out to every fashionable designer on the planet. Are they paying for the plugs?

And another huge plus? Many books feature “powerful” women, like lawyers, but fail to ever actually show them working. It’s understood that they’re successful without us getting an inkling of how they got that way. Laflèche brings us right into Catherine’s firm — and it’s anything but boring. With all the politics going on and crazy, colorful coworkers, Edwards & White is a pretty happening place. But even someone like me — someone not all that interested in law — could get a feel for what it would be like to work somewhere like this. As a character, Catherine is known for explaining law jargon in an easy, accessible way — and I’ll go out on a limb and say she gets that from Laflèche.

Fans of women’s fiction and New York-based novels will find a pleasant, if not earth-shattering, story in J’adore New York. While I didn’t finish the book feeling enlightened or changed, it was definitely a worthwhile experience — and a lawyer’s law novel.

Chronique complète ---> http://chroniqueslivres.canalblog.com...

Review (and response from author!) can also be found on my blog!

J’adore New York has constantly caught my eye at the bookstore, and when my friend finished it in a matter of days, I asked to borrow it. Figuring I’d enjoy it, I didn’t realize how quickly I’d actually get through it as well! This debut novel from Isabelle Laflèche, a fellow Canadian, is a fun and entertaining read.

The novel follows the story of Catherine, a Parisian lawyer transferred to her firm’s New York City office and her struggles to prove herself in a very different work culture. Immersed in an office with high-powered partners, backstabbing secretaries and sleazy clients, Catherine attempts to keep her head above water while juggling a social life, a love life and a killer sense of style. Not until her world starts spinning out of control does she question what she really wants.

The mark of a good storyteller is swaying the reader to feel how you want them to feel – annoying characters are really irritating, stressful situations make you want to tear your hair out – and Laflèche does just that. I almost had anxiety attacks just reading about her stressful office encounters! Rikash, her assistant, was a bit too over-the-top though… I cringed every time I read him call her “dah-ling”. I also felt that Catherine, being a Parisian new to the Big Apple, seemed quite fluent and savvy with the “Americanized” mannerisms and slang. Perhaps her 6 years at the firm in Paris allowed her to become fluent, not only in business-English but social banter as well. She’s a character you want to root for though. Throughout all the stress and frustrations she goes through, you’re right there with her, cheering her on, hoping she succeeds.

One other little personal pet peeve of mine is when I read grown men “tickling” someone, written to be endearing or romantic. I don’t know about you, but the image I have in my head is a handsome grown man being all goo-goo and tickling their love interest. It just seems unrealistic and not quite the manly sex-appeal that the moment may be calling for.

Finally, I’d like to leave off with a quote from the book that I connected with. I feel it’s a great mantra to live by: Your passion is waiting for your courage to catch up.

-L'histoire avait plusieurs longueurs.

Granted, not the deepest novel in the world, but I enjoyed very much. First, as a lawyer, I totally identified with the stressful law environment (particularly at firms), the politics and so on, the logistics (yes, that is nerdy lawyerly of me to say). Second, I love the discussion of labels, designers and NYC. Third, the descriptions of French-American culture shock was enjoyable too. The plot wasn't bad either. Will it change your life? Probably not. But if you want to have a fun read and are a female lawyer, this is the book for you. As far as chick-lit goes, one can do much worse! I would love to meet the author someday and compare notes and laugh over lunch about being fashion-loving gals with eyes for legal details!

This book is ideal position when behind the window is crummy weather, when a head aches you, when you are feeling down. The book is relaxing and lets momentarily move in funny, at least also bitter world of New York lawyers, to know their successes and very difficult road to follow to them. J’adore New York is excellent, clear, correcting the mood and the position full of the dynamism. I will admit that I began the reading with the light scepticism for it. I thought, well next idiotic easy read. But I made a mistake. Indeed, the book is an easy read, but high quality, cheering up and drawing from the front page. In my opinion, it is excellent book for the coming autumn and the winter.

I would describe this book as Shopaholic meets The Good Wife. Catherine Lambert is a Parisian lawyer who gets a transfer to the firm's New York office with an eye on partnership. She quickly learns that being a lawyer in the Big Apple can be summed up in one word: billing. Being an associate lawyer means no personal life but what is a girl to do when your client, a gorgeous, charming millionaire doesn't take no for an answer? Isabelle Lafleche's book is a fun read. She created a well-rounded character who I was able to sympathize with and root for as Catherine dodged the minefield that is the road to partnership and love. I am looking forward to reading J'adore Paris.

This was a fun quick read about a Parisian woman who works in Law and transfers to the NY office of her firm in order to try and make partner. She slowly see's how New York eats up the soul, tries to keep composure, and it's great to read how a woman can never let go of her real passions...

I really enjoyed reading this book, it made me giggle, smile, and laugh on the inside. If you ever need something light and fun grab J'adore New York.

I'm always up for supporting fellow Canadian authors, so when I saw this gorgeous cover at the airport before flying back to London, I grabbed it. It's a great insider's view of corporate life in New York and a very enjoyable read.

Very funny and well written :) I know corporate life in a big firm as an insider and it is so much fun to read about it! Add some French culture and fashion to the hectic NY life and you got a charming, lovely book :) J'adore!

At first I liked this book, but as it progressed it just got worse for me. I felt like the storyline was a bit disconnected along with the characters.
