Julia Gfrörer is an American cartoonist, graphic novelist, illustrator, and author. Her work is often transgressive, invoking occult themes within an ambience of subtly observed historicist concerns.
One of Gfrörer’s best, certainly benefited by having multiple stories (short though they are). “River of Tears” is a bruising and heartbreaking portrait of emotional codependency, manipulation, and guilt. “All is Lost” reads like a deconstructed fairy tale told from an odd angle. “Unclean”, an enigmatic, eerie piece of work, uses one very old horror trope to remarkably original effect. And the grim “Phosphorous” depicts a single traumatic sexual encounter—one without context or resolution—that subverts traditional horror gender dynamics and haunts the mind for ages after. This is both a treat for longtime fans and a good introduction to her work for the curious. The art is beautiful, the stories are remarkable, and Gfrörer is simply a master. Don’t miss it.
