Profiles and commentary about 50 companies that have made a lasting impact on technology, culture, and business. Any such list is obviously subjective. This author draws across industries, geographies, and types of impact. You could suggest reasonable alternatives, but the companies included are truly interesting for the impact they made and how it occurred. The portrayal of each selection is fair, though he does often end with a parting shot at politically unpopular leaders.

An interesting business book highlighting 50 companies that the author felt changed the world. From The East India Company to Google, the book spans many centuries. I feel that the book is greatly geared to a British target audience but this American found the book well worth the read. I learned a lot and got background on many companies that I would never have researched myself. I was disappointed by a few companies that were missing, but as I said, it had included a few companies that I would never have thought of. I also would have liked more in depth reports included in the book. Some of the reports did not give a business description but rather the history of one of the company’s main products. Still, the book had many examples of various businesses and their products over the centuries. If business is truly cyclical, having a better understanding of these companies could prove to be truly helpful.

This book is actually quite good in bringing the factual data of particular corporation that effecting the world, giving you behind-the-curtain knowledge of famous corporation across centuries. often interesting yet entertaining to know. But the translation is very bad. i read a translated version in bahasa indonesia that really does not suit the sentenced as intended in its own mother language. too bad the original publisher does not implementing a good translation policy on this book. The bahasa translated version is like reading a whole book through a translator program with exact and real meaning of each words not a contextual meaning of the sentences. i was deceived by its good-looking-solid-hard-cover. never judge the book by its cover. too bad..

This was a fascinating collection of 4-page snippets summarising the author's 50 most influential companies. In many cases the companies' impact has resulted in significant financial clout, but it is the impact on the way we do life that is perhaps the most intriguing aspect. The emphasis is therefore not corporations (amalgams of smaller businesses) but the units which helped us travel (VW, Ford, Chunnel), communicate (Bell, googol, Penguin, CNN) and care for our homes (Singer) - etc. Inspiring to read how the power of a novel idea connected with human need becomes adopted to the extent that they feel 'inevitable'.

Book provides short summaries of some of the most successful corporations over the last few hundread years. Given the length of the book, not all major corporations are covered, and the focus is on American (and to some degree, European) corporations. The details are lacking in some areas but, overall, useful to those who want a quick summary of major corporations.

It wasn't for me - there was too much history involved and too little marketing for my taste.
