Hindsight may be 20/20...

After nearly three months, FBI Special Agent Jackson Caldwell is no closer to catching the infamous Raptor than he was before the First Alliance Bank robbery. He has his suspicions about the major players involved, but he doesn’t have enough evidence to prove it. Yet.

The noose is tightening around her neck more every day, but Skylar Montgomery isn’t ready to turn herself in. She realizes it was probably all just another con to the man she loves, yet she can’t walk away – especially once she learns something that will change everything.

When a child is kidnapped by the mob, Jackson must do whatever it takes to bring her home – even if it means going rogue. As he goes farther across the line between right and wrong, illegal deals and secrets pile up. But none of that matters to him. Doing whatever it takes to find both Raptor and the child may cost him the life of someone close.

Hindsight may be 20/20, but...Foresight is Flawless

Sydney Katt has been writing books for as long as she could string words into sentences. Today, her books are more complex and feature romance, murder and mayhem, all subjects her grade school teachers frowned upon.

Happily married since before the beginning of time, Sydney and her husband live in the Dallas area, where three demanding cats rule their lives. When they aren't slaying video game dragons, the five of them keep a watchful eye for the first signs of the Zombie Apocalypse.

Sydney Katt provides a taunt, complex story that has well developed characters with realistic interaction and expectations. She utilizes a time honored technique in thrillers in that she switches viewpoints from one character to the next, offering the reader an almost visceral glimpse into the hopes, fears, passions and flaws of both the heroes and adversaries. In many cases the reader can almost lose themselves in her story, and be sucked into the plot for an afternoon or evening.

Almost. While I enjoyed the complex plot and story line, there were a few things that I found somewhat less than appealing. First was Ms. Katt's insistence on switching between first and third person narratives. While I often enjoy the multiple view points, I believe her story would have been better served by remaining in the third person. There were quite a few times in the story when I became slightly confused by who was in the driver’s seat. Also, the romantic relationship between the two main characters – Jenna and Jackson seemed artificial in its conflict. There were quite a few times when my reaction to the latest drama in their relationship was “oh, come on!”. Instead of providing me with the impression of two mature, professional people (one is a federal agent, the other an attorney), who had the occasional disagreement, I got the impression of two jealous teenagers.

I did however enjoy the interplay between the minor characters of Elaine and Brandon, and hope that their relationship is explored more fully in subsequent books. The classic tension of first attraction and temptation was expertly done, and it is in this subtle, yet descriptive emotion that Sydney Katt seems to really excel.

The plot of the book is complex, yet comforting predictable. The twists and turns are hinted at well in advance, and the reader is given every opportunity to solve the case, and the author does a commendable job of giving clues without being stridently obvious in her approach.

If you’re looking for a passionate romance with mystery/thriller undertones, this is a good choice.

I enjoyed this book overall, but I wish there had been a bit more of Skylar and Price. I like Jenna and Jackson, but some of their conflicts felt a bit forced to me. This book was a bit complex and went between many characters, but I didn't find it overly confusing. I also LOVED the subplot with Brandon and Elaine. I really hope that develops in the next book!

I tried several times to really like this book. There isn't much wrong with the writing. The characters seem to work. But the story lost me so many times, I kept having to go back and reread parts. It wasn't until the very end when I knew what was going on and could keep all the characters straight. That said, the ending wasn't bad.
