Taming the Alpha

Rate this book
When you're the Alpha Male there are certain things that are expected of you, and finding a suitable mate is at the top of the list. For Jax, a powerful and dangerous werewolf, that's not so easy because the one woman he's deeply attracted to is a girl that will never be accepted by the pack. A woman that he can't seem to get out of his head. A first for him.

Beautiful, curvy Nikki Avery hates her job at the local strip club, but she's struggling just to get by. Her dream of ever finding a decent guy worth loving shattered as night after night she stands before a crowd of drunken men, their jeers and catcalls burning a hole in her heart. To make things worse, there's a killer on the loose, stalking the dancers, waiting to attack.

But when a handsome stranger appears at the club, his dangerous, feral presence commanding attention, the s.e.x.u.a.l charge between them is so strong that she can barely breathe, Nikki finds herself swept into a world she never dreamed existed. A world where nothing is as it seems and once she enters, there is no turning back.

Warning: this novella contains e.x.p.l.i.c.i.t, s.e.x.u.a.l material and scenes. Readers 18+ only.

Guilty confession time – I read a lot of erotic literature, and sometimes, my wife reads them with me. If the book is done right it leads to other things (if you get my drift).
This is a novella that we both thoroughly enjoyed. Adriana Hunter has managed to capture the BBW (that’s big beautiful women if you’re new to the term) perfectly. Curves rule, and it’s fantastic to read a book where the female form is embraced and loved.
Taming the Alpha involves werewolves. A tried and tested and thoroughly saturated supernatural market – but Adriana has managed to keep her story fresh and inviting. The writing was sharp and the characters different. The formula for a good erotica involves lust, restraint, passion and animalistic hunger – this has it in oodles. The sub story/under story involving murder is a good hook, and I definitely want to read more.

I’d recommend these books to those that love JR Ward, Gena Showalter and Christine Feehan.

WTF did I just read? Only reason I managed to finish this, is because it was so short. This is the latest train wreck I've had to read on my long streak of awful books. The others were entirely too long and have all ended up in my DNF pile. As it is, it took me three days to get through this novella. Amazon, you've been steering me wrong lately with your books and their fancy covers and not so fancy contents.

Now that I've gotten that off my chest, lets get on with this book and why I felt it was so awful.

First, it was the writing. It was littered with errors and the grammar issues alone made me want to dust off my red pen and go to town. This book needs a new editor, one who isn't afraid to say so when things aren't working.

Then there's the plot. It had potential. Had. It was badly executed. Instead of focusing on the plot, the author spent way too much time on the smut and the fact that Nikki was a stripper. Fine, she's a stripper! We got it! Now move on! All that time spent having her dance around a pole was kind of moot, and did nothing for the story. Several of the strip club scenes could have been left out.

Jax. Alpha falling in love with a so-called social loser. Could have made for a beautiful story, but instead it read like the author didn't much care for Nikki and therefore spent a lot of time pointing out how much of a social loser Nikki really was. This should not have mattered in the story, but Jax spent a lot of time thinking about just that, making her social status matter. Which again made me really not like him a whole lot.

The smut. Can I have a yawn? I love my smutty books. Hell, I read them so much, sometimes I wonder if I read too much smut - but this one did nothing for me. I just ended up skimming and skipping through the smutty scenes. Anything, really, to just get to the end of the book.

I have the rest of the novellas in this series, but I'll not be reading them. A complete waste of my money. Sadly I've had the books too long to get a refund from Amazon.

I both loved and hated this book. To start off...the love. I was in the beginning stages of a book funk when I found this. I went through at least 4 other books, starting and putting them down after a few pages. Nothing was calling me. I didn't know what to read. Then I saw a this in passing on Amazon and I couldn't resist! Seriously, the cover is eye catching:

(well, it caught my eye ;) )

And the description pulled me in with Alpha Male. Ok, so it was werewolves...not my favorite...but I can live with it. So, I picked it up and fell in lust with the story.

I really liked Nikki and Jax. The book started out great. It was moving at a pace that was great...setting up everything. Now, I knew going in that this was going to be a novella. What I didn't know was that it was going to be the first book in a series. I'm notorious for not doing my research on books, but I like to jump into a book that grabs me. So, back to my issue...Everything's moving on fine and dandy...they meet, fall into lust, feel a connection, set up the mystery in the book and BAM! It's love. They exchange the "I love yous" and the book ends. Like I said, I knew this was a novella, so I knew it would be short and quick, but up until they said "I love you", it wasn't feeling that way.

Speaking of endings, I wouldn't call it a cliffhanger (Except for that pesky mystery killer...who is he/she?) but it's a definite "To be continued..."

Even with that issue of the quick ILU, I can honestly say that I enjoyed this book. It kept a book funk at bay and it has me intrigued for the other books in the series.

Oh, one last thing...I hate Bec. Ok. Now I'm done. :)

“I want you because you’re meant for me. You’re my mate, my soul mate… my everything.”

I was actually pretty excited about reading this one, it had some elements that I thought I would like, an alpha male shifter and a stripper, but sadly I couldn’t get into this one. Insta connection, a not so alpha male who seemed to tame for my liking, and a FF relationship that was hinted at but not really explored are just some of the things in this story. I had a hard time connecting or accepting the characters, it wasn’t bad, just not for me.

Super hot and a bit mysterious!!! I liked it. Lot but it was so short I could have cried.

Got the newer version from Amazon and it was longer and a lot better. Had a ton of spelling and grammar problems but who cares if it's a great story?! Not me!

Great book, hot and mysterious! I can't wait to read more!

I received a recommendation via Amazon for Adriana’s books and thought I’d give the latest title a read.

Short, sweet and firmly in the ‘adult only’ genre, this novella hooks you. Nikki is a stripper, a good stripper, and she knows how to control men with a look, a dance, a touch. One day the enigmatic Jax turns up and watches her – unnerving her world and igniting something deep inside. Cue romance/erotica.

I use the slash there deliberately. This is an excellent mix of romance and erotica, and I struggle to define it as one or the other. I did feel that the novella ended too suddenly. We had this great build up of tension, the introduction and hint of Lori’s love for Nikki and Bec’s insecurities of living in his brother’s shadow, and they didn’t quite peak. No doubt their stories are to come, and I really look forward to reading more about them.

If you’re after a quick read in the bath with a glass of wine and candles, then this is the book for you. It’s dirty, it’s raw and it gets the thumbs up from me.

I enjoyed the passion and mystery in this story, Ms. Hunter did a great job combing both, a love story with a mysterious killer on the loose.

Nikki has a very disturbing past which made her very distrustful of men. She has a relationship that goes beyond friendship with her BBF, but that is safer than trusting a man. But she notices a hunk at the club that has been watching her for the past 3 nights and suddenly she feels things she never felt with a customer before. Can she trust this one, or will he be the same self satisfying male she has known before.

Jax is alpha to his pack and being pressured to find a mate, now he has finally found her, but can he tell her what he is and how will she take it. Will the pack accept a stripper as his mate?

There is something out there ripping people apart and Jax must find out who and what it is before it continues on it's killing spree.

No me gusto. Fin.

2/5 estrellitas.

Taming the Alpha was good considering it's a short story. With this kind of stories, you can't expect to find much depth and the pace has to be quite fast. So having these two things clear, I guess the book was okay.

The beggining of the story was really good, and the connection between the main characters, Jax and Nikki was palpable.

As the story goes by though, the characters start to lose a bit of the strength they had at the begging of the story. And I confess, this is the reason why I'm rating this book with 2 stars.

I hate giving low ratings but this one just missed the mark for me. I feel like there was next to no real story line and it kind of jumped from him to her, where we learned nothing we cared about and what the hell is with her and her friends "friendship"??? Are they best friends that are super close or lovers because it went from one to the other the whole time. Also if this is a book about a werewolf why did we only see one scene with them? I just really dislike the authors take of shape shifters and felt it was missing any answers or real story line.

Probably really 2.5 stars.

Full out stripper, who is bisexual with her girlfriend from school days, getting together with a supposed to be Alpha. The most interesting thing about this story is probably the murders and the alpha's brother Bec, who doesn't approve.

My first random pick in the Romance/Erotica category was Taming the Alpha by Adriana Hunter mainly because of the cool cover and the promise of extra plotline (werewolves or other paranormal creatures). The book is short, barely 78 pages in Ebook format, and I have to say – (spoiler alert) the title has nothing to do with the plot or at least I find no connection. I read without expectations as I was afraid I would hate it before it even started. Funnily enough, I didn’t hate it.

The story revolves around Nikki, a young pretty stripper with sad past and bad luck with men (oh, and unrealistic romantic expectations considering how shitty her life is). I was curious to see if her unusual occupation will add a special flair to the story but apart from accenting on how sensual and sexy she is, her job could have been something else. I would have loved for a little more spotlight on Nikki as her own person, why she chose this and what made her sell her body like that. It would have made me connect with her so much more.

She meets Jax, an alpha wolf of his pack, through her job and there is this instant spark, deeper connection between the two even before they exchange words. I know this is kind of typical for romances but I can think of ten different ways you can exploit this connection in a non-cliche way.

Jax’s attraction to her and his internal struggle to bring a stripper as his mate (oh, the horror!) made me a bit annoyed with him. And we were told like ten times that he is the alpha but most of his actions paint him as beta at best.

Low key erotica. Moon cycle only-involuntary werewolves.
It's a good story and I jumped immediately to the sequel, but only because I knew it was also a short story.
The story does have one major proofreading error! She admits to not really understanding things such as the phases of the Moon because she never finished school. But later she said her parents died 2 months before she would have graduated. If you're going to insert a plot device of that caliber, for whatever reason, you should stick with it, not completely destroy it a few chapters later. Especially when you call upon itself again early in the very next book.

This was an...odd bit of a story in certain respects.

There were a number of elements in the story that just didn't seem to fit together well. I never understood why the sexual relationship between Lori and Nikki was mentioned. It was a strong undercurrent in the story that didn't seem necessary. It may have some importance in the next story but not in this one. At least not for me. I didn't understand why they couldn't just be best friends. Their sexual relationship came up a couple of times in the story. Nikki seemed more concerned about Lori's hurt feelings from the lack of sexing than she did about Jax's when he didn't want her leaving the tattoo place alone.

I also didn't understand why Bec was at such odds with Jax. No real reason was provided in the story, but Bec had this strong antagonism toward Bec that bordered on hatred. Again, we may see more in the next book but as a reader, I wanted to understand why there seemed to be such bad blood that was more than sibling rivalry and Bec wanting to be the big man of the pack.

And finally, the ending... My reader was actually at 91% when Jax revealed what he was to Nikki. Nikki, in response, was wary and aghast for two seconds and then she completely accepted who Jax was without question. The whole "reveal" happened too late in the story. It felt like an afterthought in some respects. I understand the story will be ongoing in Claiming The Alpha since they haven't taken down "the thing" hunting in the area. I guess I was looking for a story with a more decisive ending as opposed to a "Sorta happy for now but...to be continued" ending. The story felt intentionally shortened to create a book two but it was unnecessary since this one lacked so much depth. I would have enjoyed it as one complete story. But...we know why that is in the publishing world.

I'm interested enough to see what happens in the next story but hope that there is a concrete conclusion. Jax and Nikki just don't have enough substance to keep their story running longer.

1,4 estrellas.

Nikki lives a hard life, and not entirely by choice. Her parents never cared for her as a child, focused instead on their own selfish behavior. She never finished high-school, works as a stripper, and has had a string of failed relationships. Her heart yearns to find a man who will see through the life she lives and love her for who she is on the inside.

Jax is a werewolf who is struggling to find his way. The tragic and unexpected death of his parents thrust him into the position of pack Alpha. He knows that they depend on him for stability and leadership, but the strain the changes have put on his relationship with his younger brother and lack of a mate to share his burden is starting to show.

Nikki and Jax are instantly drawn to each other. Jax heart tells him she is his mate, but she is human and is unaware of the existence of wolves. He worries that the pack won't accept her as his mate as it goes against every tradition they have long held sacred.

A rash of unexplained murders near Nikki's club put her life in danger, and Jax is willing to do anything to protect her. Even if it means running the risk of revealing his wolf side and losing the woman he loves.

A well written and emotionally engaging paranormal romance with complicated characters and a complex storyline, Taming the Alpha is a fast paced erotic romance that left me howling for more!

A copy of Taming the Alpha was received from the author in exchange for an honest review.

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.

So I tend to do this thing with free books on Kindle where I don't read the description, I just download whatever e-book I've found based on the title and start to read. I figured this would be another trashy romance with bad writing and good sex, I'd read it in like 3 hours, and be done with it.

I was so wrong.

Ok, well, the smut is good. BUT, it took me two nights to get through and it wasn't a trashy novel. This book is well-written, has a great plot, and my stomach's twisting in suspense.

That's the bad part. See, when I read a novel, I expect to have all of the ends tied up in a happy little bow at the end. Maybe it's not all good, but all of the running themes are addressed and dealt with. This book left out the giant elephant (or should I say wolf creature) in the room. Completely. And I feel like I should touch on that, too, cuz I came in expecting this nice, easy-going romance and there's this murderer loose who may or may not be targeting the main character (note to self: read. the. book. descriptions).

Point is, it kinda scared the crap out of me and now I have to buy (-cringe- what do you mean buy the Kindle version) the sequel to be fully satisfied. It's ruining my life. It's only $3, but it's ruining my life.

I knew when I read this it would be a short novella with more to come. However, this was really short and did not provide enough background. I do not mind novellas as I love CD Reiss, as well as others. This did not give enough detail or information to keep me interested.

I as not sure if I would give it less than a 2. I really hate going that low.

Below contains some spoilers, but not much.

I don't usually give examples but here we go. This wolf pack are elitists. No real explanation. No real information. The brothers here don't get along, but again, no real explanation, not alot of information. You eventually get information as to nikki's background, so I get where she is coming from. I don't get enough of Jax's family background to get where he is coming from. You only learn his father died, but I inferred that it was sudden and Jax was not prepared. Again, that is what I am inferring from some statements Jax makes, but not enough here. Don't know much about Jax's mom. Don't get a feeling for most of the other characters. So little, that I have no investment in the characters after the first novella.

I felt this book had so much potential but more it didn't quite deliver. I thought Adriana Hunter did a great job of coming up with an original plot, particularly the side mystery that I won't go into to avoid spoilers.

Unfortunately a lot of things just felt underdeveloped to me. The relationship between Nikki and Jax is in the style of fated-mates/insta-love which is never my cup of tea. Similarly the pack dynamic was touched on but not really explored. Nikki's background was another topic that I felt could have been interesting but just seemed a bit rushed. For such big issues I would have wanted more information and emotion. As it was it just felt a bit pointless.

Therefore I didn't dislike this book, but I just wish the author had tried to develop some of her ideas rather than attempting to include everything possible in such a short story.

Of course these ideas could be explored further in the sequel but I just wasn't intrigued enough by Taming the Alpha to continue with the serial.

This is one of those books that was just somewhat okay for me. My biggest issue with it was the end....it was one of those just left you going 'huh? what?' while flipping back and forth through the pages asking 'where is the rest of it?' The end totally just dropped off for me, leaving me a bit annoyed. While I suppose it was meant to keep you wanting to read the next upcoming installment, I just honestly wasn't invested enough in the story overall. I really just didn't connect with the characters, I couldn't figure out what was going on with the brothers of this pack (one minute Jax's brother is 'in' then he's out, then he's 'in' again), and I was left with far to many questions. I'm on the fence as to whether I want to read the next one.

A good story

The story was good. Nikki is a strong woman who strips to live and she tries to make the most of her lot in life even if it's not what she wants. Jax is the alpha of his pack and is searching for a mate and finds it in Nikki. They have a lot of chemistry. The story has a lot of sex but what I like the most was the mystery of what is killing people in this story. I felt the connection between the two main characters was developing too soon. They see each other, sleep together and are in love...they barely know each other. I will read the next book because I need to know what happens with the mystery and with Jax's brother.

This book was: very enjoyable. It wasn't exactly how I wanted it to be, thus only three stars (and it was a bit, okay very short).
The plot was: alright. Not what I had expected (in a bad kind of way).
The beginning was: okay.
The middle was: good.
The crescendo was: good.
The finish/ending was: great.
The characters were: alright.
The worldbuilding was: good.
The language was: well used.
The themes represented in the book were: nothing extraordinary.
Would I recommend this book? Yes/no? Why/why not? Depends on whom I'm recommending it to.
