I’m back on the manga train. After taking a break (I had to know what I was getting for Christmas before I bought anymore) I was more than ready to hit the rails and read some more. I’m sad that I’ve almost caught up to the number of English translated volumes and will soon have to wait 3 months in between releases.
Anyways, it’s Detective Conan. Worth the 5 stars, all day everyday. Now, on to the next volume!

This volume hit a great balance of intrigue and suspense—exactly what I crave at the moment! The pacing keeps you hooked, and there’s an exciting layer of tension throughout. Although I still feel the resolutions aren’t always executed as smoothly as they could be, the plot keeps me coming back. I’m especially curious to learn more about Sera and her mysterious background.

Recap: Shinichi Kudou (Jimmy Kudo in the dub) is a teen genius detective who has been shrunk by a poison and now poses as grade-schooler Conan Edogawa, but still solves crimes. Thus the Japanese title that translates as “Detective Conan.” See my earlier reviews.
This volume opens with the conclusion of a case in which a woman obsessed with clocks was threatened with death by “The Guardian of Time” (But was it the White Guardian or the Black Guardian?) The lights went out at her birthday party, and when they came back up again, she’d been stabbed. But where’s the murder weapon, and why are the witness descriptions of the murderer so odd?
The next case begins with Ran Mouri (Rachel Moore) off at a karate tournament and most of the neighborhood restaurants closed due to a hot springs trip. So Conan and Kogoro (Richard Moore) wind up going to another neighborhood to try Ogura Ramen, which has the slogan, “Ramen to die for!” And sure enough, one of the other customers dies! It’s poison, but how did it get into the victim?
Having returned triumphant from the tournament, Ran takes Conan along with her to a dessert buffet promised by her friend Sonoko (Serena.) On the bus to the hotel it’s at, they happen to run into Sera, another teen detective that’s almost as smart as Conan and as good at jeet kune do as Ran is at karate. Despite a misunderstanding about a groper, Sera accompanies them to the hotel because that person has a reservation there.
So they’re witnesses when the hotel owner’s son falls to his death. But was the man a suicide, a murder victim, or the cursed target of the Wheelchair Ghost? Sera helps solve the case, and turns out to be a new recurring character as a classmate of Ran (and theoretically Shinichi if he ever comes back to school.) More on Sera in the SPOILERS section below.
Remember that neighborhood association hot springs trip? Turns out that there was a murder there; one of four mystery writers. The victim’s brother tricked the three other writers into coming to famous detective Kogoro’s office and reveals he’s got a bomb; he wants the Sleeping Detective to figure out which one is the killer. Ran and Sera happen to be present, but Conan isn’t, being off with the Detective Kids. Can the case be solved without any more deaths?
This is another of those cases that requires knowledge of the Japanese language; the suspect is revealed, but the final twist to the case will be in the next volume!
Overall, a good volume, and because it introduces a new recurring character and that person’s subplots, a key one. Recommended to Detective Conan fans.
SPOILERS: For the first case Sera’s involved with, everyone assumes Sera’s a boy until the very end when Masumi Sera shows up at school in a girl’s uniform. Even the normally very observant Conan is fooled (and since he’s not there for the reveal is still under that impression during the next case.) This is pulled off by Sera being flat-chested and slim-hipped, having a relatively deep voice, wearing baggy men’s clothing and hat…and in the Japanese version, using masculine language. (This last is because she’s spent most of her life overseas and her Japanese tutors were all male.)
The creator gives us a rare pantyflash to establish that Sera’s not a boy wearing a girl’s school uniform, but apparently the fact that she never wears women’s clothing outside of that uniform is going to be a running gag. More interestingly, Sera makes it clear she knows something weird is up with Conan. This is sure to cause trouble!

This volume picks up right where the last left off and the story I found to be worthwhile, even though I dislike cliffhangers between volumes of Case Closed. The ending was fulfilling and worth the delay. The first full story within this volume is about Detective Richard Moore and Detective Conan have dinner at "Ramen to Die For OGURA"...when a customer...literally dies there is a mystery to solve! The next case seems to be bringing in a youthful individual who has skills both in deduction and martial arts!?! This new characters skills are immediately used in the introduction and then in the next case that immediately comes into the story. It is a refreshing style of storytelling for this story. This story is almost over...but I feel it is only a slight bit left within the following volume of Case Closed.

Conclusion to the "never hire Mori (and Conan) as a bodyguard" story. The next story is about Mori and Conan (without Ran) going to a Ramen restaurant and getting involved in a poisoning murder. It's fun to see Mori and Conan interact without anyone else involved. The next story introduces Sera, a new teenage detective who has too much interest in Conan. She gets involved in an apparent suicide as witnessed by Ran, Sorono and Conan. Sera seems to be getting the deductions wrong, but is she faking it to draw out Conan? The next story has Sera at Mori's detective agency when an angry assailant brings 3 suspects in the murder of his sister and demands Mori solve the case. Sera aranges a call from Conan to be answered, and he changes his voice to Sinichi's and attempts to solve the case long distance.

Urca, sembra sia arrivato un nuovo personaggio che è destinato a restare e non mi ha fatto una bella prima impressione. Una ragazza in classe con Ran che parla di sé al maschile e fa la detective per hobby. Vedremo come si collega alla storia principale.

As mentioned above, I am going to write a proper review for this soon, but I have a few books ahead of this one in the queue, so I cannot stop reading DC NOW! That's sacrilege. I have decided to read all the chapters available up to now (we are almost to 1000!) As you can see, I am totally fangirling over here and I don't care, because this is one of my favorite manga series, ever! But all of this aside, there are a few things I wanted to list so I don't need to go back and look everything up when I do finally sit down and write my fangirl review. ✌🏻

#1, I never call this CASE CLOSED. If you do, you're not a true fan of this series, so don't even bother reading my review or my personal opinions. I'm sorry if I offend you, but you offended me first by telling me you want to read CASE CLOSED or you just love Jimmy.
#2, as you can tell by #1, I read this online. I would never waste my money buying a manga series in english that cannot get the name correct and mess up the main characters to make it appear more "ENGLISH." I am so happy I don't run a blog and this isn't a review on Sailor Moon, #1, because I have a huge soap box tirade against DiC. I also don't think there is anything against reading something online. Comics, which is what manga are, are meant to be read and shared and sometimes paying over $10 is too much in my opinion. Plus, I read the newest chapters as soon as they are released from Japan, because I would never miss a release of DC. So this is my personal shout out to you translators from me, Thank You!

THE GUARDIAN OF TIME AND THE BIRTHDAY MURDER
A chilling letter signed "the Guardian of Time" warns of a murder at a birthday party in a mansion with a clock tower. As Kogoro stands guard, the hostess is stabbed with an ice pick at precisely 6:00 PM. Yet, no weapon or footprints are found. Witnesses describe the culprit as a large, nimble figure in a dress—matching no guest’s appearance. Conan must unravel the truth behind this seemingly impossible crime.
POISONED RAMEN AND THE BUSINESS RIVALRY
Kogoro’s dinner plans take a dark turn at Ramen Ogura when a business rival collapses and dies after a suspicious remark about the ramen. Conan suspects poisoning, but with only three possible suspects—the owner, his assistant, and another customer—he must decipher the hidden motive and method behind the fatal meal before the culprit slips away.

On a bus to Haido Hotel, Sonoko mistakenly accuses a man in a blue hat of being a pervert—only for Conan to discover the man was protecting her from the real culprit. THE BLUE HAT DETECTIVE AND THE HOTEL MYSTERY
On a bus to Haido Hotel, Sonoko mistakenly accuses a man in a blue hat of being a pervert—only for Conan to discover the man was protecting her from the real culprit. After arriving at the hotel, a man falls to his death from the top floor. While others believe it’s suicide, Conan suspects murder. The man in the blue hat, introducing himself as Sera, confirms Conan’s suspicions—revealing himself to be a skilled detective with a sharp eye for clues.
HOSTAGE CRISIS AND THE DEADLY QUESTION
Sera’s sudden interest in Conan is cut short when a gunman strapped with explosives storms the agency with three hostages. He demands Kogoro identify which hostage killed his younger sister. With lives hanging in the balance, Conan must quickly uncover the killer’s identity before the situation spirals into tragedy.

Akhir kasus penguasa waktu. Mengerikan sekali, ternyata tepat waktu yang terlalu berlebihan juga bisa menimbulkan dendam.
Ada kasus ramen yang lezatnya setengah mati. Jadi pengen. Pengen ramennya sih, bukan kasusnya :D
Ada kasus penipuan telpon juga. Makanya jangan suka menipu orang lewat telepon, banyak yang dendam tuh (┌ ˘～˘ ┐)
Ada juga kasus penyanderaan. Kali ini yang disandera adalah detektif Mouri, Ran, tiga tersangka pembunuhan dan tokoh detektif baru yang tampaknya adalah penggemar Conan. Kasusnya belum selesai di buku ini. Penasaraaan. Mesti segera beli lanjutannya nih.

Sebenarnya sih mau ngasih 3,5 bintang soalnya ceritanya cukup seru meski nggak seseru kalau kawanan berjubah hitam muncul #eaaaaa
By the way, muncul tokoh baru yang namanya Sera, yg pertama dikira cowok, eh ternyata cewek lho...dan kayaknya si cewek yang ngakunya detektif ini udah tahu identitas Conan yang sebenarnya dech dari gerak geriknya, meski belum tahu juga yach....

Muncul karakter baru, which is quite interesting, sayangnya kasus yang muncul masih kasus yang tergolong biasa, which is quite lame. Meskipun begitu, Gosho Aoyama sensei memberikan variasi ke cara pemecahan kasus yang sekaligus mengaitkannya dengan karakterisasi si karakter baru, which is quite good.

Best part: ketika Ran menutup tirai dan berbicara kepada Sera. Dia sangat memercayai Shinichi dan apakah kepercayaan Ran itu terbalas? Dan jawabannya harus ditemukan pada jiid selanjutnya (and it's killing me). Well, Sera looks like she is thinking about Conan more than needed, even more after Shinichi 'came' by Conan's cellphone.

sudah senang bgt bacanya, gak taunya malah brasa gak rame. tokoh barunya bikin gak semangat (kayak kasus adeknya rena m. itu loo) semoga tokoh barunya bisa cepat saya sukai atau berakhir kayak adeknya rena (lupa namanya) yang walaupun akhirnya ternyata baik tapi saya kurang suka.
