Out of Time #6

Sands of Time

Rate this book
The Crosses--high-spirited Elizabeth and her brilliant Professor of the Occult husband, Simon--find themselves, along with Jack Wells, in 1920 Cairo on a special assignment for the Council for Temporal Studies. It seems like a simple enough mission---find a missing pocket watch and bring it back to the present. The only problem is, they're not the only ones looking.

With danger lurking around every corner, Simon and Elizabeth race against a shadowy foe who is after far more than just a watch. The price for success this time just might be their lives.

What I liked: Egypt! I am a sucker for Ancient Egypt and archaeology, and for some reason I really like the 1920s in general. I also like that Jack was present in this book, I find that he is a good balance.

In Sands of Time, Simon, Elizabeth and Jack are off to 1920 Egypt in search of George Mason and a missing watch. Apparently some of the Council members have turned evil and are collecting the watches for some nefarious reason... and for some other reason Simon and Elizabeth agree to help - discarding their own list of priorities. The pacing of this book overall was better and was an interesting read mostly throughout.

For me, I found it tough to care about the Shadow Council because Martin never explained to us what the actual Council does. This has been a point of contention for me while reading the series (as noted in previous reviews), and I wish we had more information about the purpose of the Council, what Simon's grandfather and other 'operatives' do for the Council, and why it all matters. I feel like I would have liked this installment of the Out of Time series more if these things had been addressed either in Book 2 where it would have made sense or at the very least in this one.

I rather enjoy the premise of the series and the characters enough - the addition of Jack Wells really improved the series in my opinion - and as always it is obvious that Martin puts a lot of effort into researching the times Simon and Elizabeth (and sometimes Jack) travel to. In that way it is the best piece of historical fiction because I feel transported to so many eras and places!

I do not think that I will continue on with the series, however. Unfortunately the way that Martin structures her books and the overall plot arch are not for me, and I at times wind up rather frustrated. For instance, while writing this review I remembered the scarab ring... Why do I still not have a clue about the Council when it is obviously so important? Dragging this out for six books just reminds me of TV shows that go on way past their prime, dragging out the plot to keep a good thing going.

Those that like romance with a bit of adventure and historical fiction will enjoy this series. Just because it isn't for me doesn't mean it isn't for you... and I read 6 of the books before deciding to part ways!

Seriously?!?!! Absolutely loved this book! She has done it again! Simon and Elizabeth head off on another whirlwind adventure, this time in Egypt. Some of characters from previous stories are mentioned but we are introduced to some new ones as well...(MORE Diana please!!!!) although this is book #6 I feel like it could stand alone because the author gives u recap on some things without dragging it out so a new fan won't be lost and us who have read from the beginning aren't bored. Simon and Elizabeth are absolutely an adorable couple but it's not all mushy either. Loved it! Loved it! Loved it!

These are starting to be the same although with different locations and times but pretty much the plot moves forward the same. I’m finding the time traveling is interesting and immersing oneself in the culture fascinating but I miss the hometown action. It would be nice to have some home life before jumping and after returning to ground us on either end of a mission. I think I am done.

What a wonderful trip to see the pyramids and tombs before they are picked over and handled badly by so many people. Simon & Elizabeth and Jack survived harrowing experiences in Egypt searching for more watches

Enjoyable romp in a well-realised 1920's Egypt. Would probably have got more out of it if I'd read the earlier books in the series. I felt the time travel aspect was the weakest part and didn't really have a lot of point other than as a framing device for the story.

This book started out strong with Simon and Elizabeth getting kidnapped. Luckily they brought Jack along who rescues them AGAIN. They came very close to dying in this book - being trapped underground in a tomb.

This sixth in the series takes Elizabeth and Simon to Egypt. Reminiscent of Agatha Christie's Death on the Nile, the scenes are vivid with Egyptian history. As they search for another time watch, they encounter rebels and an old nemesis. Good mystery with danger, intrigue, and a bit of fun.

I feel like I shouldn’t enjoy these time travel books so much, but they are addicting! I need to see where Simon and Elizabeth go next.

This 6th book in the Out of Time Series was very good, and ended in a way that makes me want to read #7. I love this series of books and the different time periods they explore. If you haven't read the other books, you shouldn't read my review or read this book until you read the others :)

This book explores Egypt in the 1920s. It seems that the rich people of the world manage to travel to Egypt to explore and party all the time - at least that's the impression I got :) Mostly, they are exploring ancient pyramids looking for new discoveries. Elizabeth, Simon and Jack go on the adventure this time on a special assignment. A watch has gone missing and they must bring it back before the wrong people find it. This book introduces a new enemy group of people who are also looking for the watch. It also brings back a character from a previous story... no spoilers here - you'll have to read it if you don't already know :)

The only problem I had is that I've read the 6 books spread out over a long period of time and I don't remember all of the things referenced from the previous books. I even had to look into that character mentioned above to remind myself where that character came into the story originally. The book doesn't reference a ton from the past series, but it is still best to read them close together if you can so you can keep track of everything that happens. It should be easy to read 1-6 since 1-3 and 4-6 are both sold in box sets (and often offered on discounts on Amazon).

Enjoy!!

Another adventure for Elizabeth, Simon and Jack. I really enjoyed reading this story, in particular, because growing up I had quite a fascination for Egypt and archaeology. I couldn't wait to grow up and go out on a dig and find some historical artifact which would leave a mark on future history. I have since gone down another path, but this novel took me back to those wonderful childhood days of fascination.
I also fell more in love with Elizabeth and Simon, as well as their growing relationship with Jack. Their chemistry works so well. Jack never seems like a third wheel and always contributes to whatever mission they are on. I definitely look forward to Jack finding a suitably challenging, yet sweet partner to add to this trio's adventures.
Sands of Time brings back an old nemesis, but also introduces some wonderful location characters that enhance the story. I honestly do not know how they form some of these connections and then leave them again to go off on another adventure.
The only time I will say this, next year can't come soon enough. I can not wait to find out where they will head off on their next adventure (and also find out if the ill-fated child arrives soon!!!!)

They just keep getting better! When I first started this one, I was not excited. I didn't think that I would like the setting (Egypt in the 1920s.) I wouldn't say that I am a person that is interested in Egyptian history. After reading this book, though, I might want to plan a trip! The details in this one were fascinating (again - no history buff, here, so it could be completely bogus and I'd never know!) Jack is back in this one and back to his funny, easy-going self.

My only complaint about this one is that it really doesn't end. It basically leads right into the next one. I mean, we sort of get a resolution for the native characters, but the general story with Elizabeth, Simon, and Jack doesn't really end. I would suggest having the next one ready to read as soon as this one is complete!

While I love stories set in glory days of Egyptian Archeology, this book didn't quite carry over with me as much as the others in the series. I'm not sure exactly why. Perhaps it was because, due to being quite busy, it took me much longer to read this one than the others. Perhaps something was just a bit off. I know I wasn't fond of the ending.

That being said, it was entertaining. To say I didn't like it as much as the rest doesn't mean that I didn't like it. It was fun. Just a bit.....light, comparatively. It just seemed like something was missing.

I'll probably read more eventually, but since my reading queue has backed up in the last month, it may be a while before I get back to it.

Do read the previous books and give this a shot. I look forward to seeing what you thought.

Monique Martin is one of my favorite authors, and her Out of Time series never disappoints. Sands of Time, the latest adventure of Simon and Elizabeth, is overflowing with adventure, suspense and history...all in 1920 Egypt! I love ancient Egyptian history and I was thrilled to see Simon and Elizabeth's travels take them to Cairo! This one is a real nail biter and I found myself on the edge of my seat several times! Ms. Martin does a fantastic job of weaving historical details about the time period into the story and making the era come alive. I really enjoyed reading this book and can't wait for #7!!!

The author has done it yet again! Even after 6 books I am still hungry for more.

So much adventure and history! Can you imagine being present in 1920's Egypt? BEFORE King Tut's tomb was even discovered. It was a fun and adventurous story. Kind of reminiscent of the Mummy movies-similar atmosphere/feel to the environment. I love it.

I hear the 7th installment of this series comes out in May. I can't wait!

I have said it once and I'll say it again...the love story part of the book is a little too corny for me, but doesn't take away from my enjoyment at all. A small part of me is guiltily enjoying it.

Highly recommend this series!

Although it has been quite some time since I read the other 5 books in this series, I feel as though this was the best. Lots of mystery, suspense, etc... With other recent readings about Egypt I didn't feel as lost in this place as I may have in the past. Egypt is not my favorite location, but this worked really well.

I haven't felt as though I needed to read the next book this badly until this one... Looks like I need to find book 7!

Thank you for this and keeping the vampires & things out of it!!! Really helped this book!

This is a must read, following yet another adventure of Elizabeth and Simon. The setting is1920 Egypt with all the glamour. I literally could not stop reading until I finished it. A new character Diana was introduced; adventurous, independent and full of fun. Jack travels with Elizabeth and Simon on this adventure. Another character from the past makes an appearance and I'm looking forward to the chase through time in the books to follow.
I hope everyone enjoys this book as much as I did!

The Out of Time series just gets better and better. Jack joins our young newlyweds in Cairo in search of a missing watch. The web of events has you coming and going across the dessert with a near fatal event that proves love conquers all. In all of their adventures they have managed to return home leaving most their new found friends behind to get on with their lives, but just when you think the villian from book 2 was taken care of, she pops back into the lives of Simon & Elizabeth Cross.

Thoroughly enjoying this series. Love the characters and the way some are popping up in surprising places. Love the Indiana Jones feel to several of the stories. Love Simon, Elizabeth and Jack. Hoping to run into Betty again and maybe even a certain psychopath who gives me chills!! Fantastic series...looking forward to the next!

1920s Egypt. Wow this book had Dimon and Elizabeth in many pickles. But the adventure continues in the next book. Would love to see these books picked up by tv or movies. Very Indiana Jones-ish. And I love how she throws modern thinking in with Elizabeth, makes you remember she is not from the time she's in.

I can't wait for the next edition. This was once again non-put-downable. I was disappointed, however, by the ending in continuance. Now I have to bide my time until the next edition. But I still love the premise of the story.

Absolutely loved the 1920s Egyptian setting! Carter references? Yes please! The Indiana Jones fangirl in me got way too excited about all the archaeological awesomeness! And Miss Evil Crazypants is back?! Gah! Stupid cliffhanger. This is not going to end well. :)

Another time period and the return of a villain - the mixture much as before but the location is a trifle more exotic. There is a little more background to the overall set-up. Looking forward to reading further installments.

Excellent. Simon and Elizabeth travel to Egypt in 1920 and bring Jack with them. An old enemy resurfaces and there's lots of danger and excitement. One of the best ones I've read so far. This was quite exciting, a page turner!
