Antique dealer Jade Barrett has had it better. First she’s dumped by her boyfriend after she catches him in flagrante delicto with her own bookkeeper. Then she’s not only locked out of her apartment for back rent, but discovers that someone has cleaned out her entire bank account. When she’s approached by the handsome, aggressive, and heavily armed Will Malone, Jade figures that it’s an inevitable end to a really bad day.
As luck would have it, Will’s on her side. He’s a DEA agent avenging the murder of his sister, an expert in antique jewelry—and like it or not, Jade’s an unwitting link to the crime. When Jade and Will become the targets of an unknown assassin, they have little choice but to hit the road and lay low. Now Jade wonders what other surprises are in store for her—and for this sexy stranger she’s starting to warm up to. After all, her life depends on it.
Jill Shalvis is a NYT, USA Today, and Amazon Top 100 bestselling author of small-town romance and romcoms, known for big feels, found family, and plenty of shenanigans.
If you love small-town chaos, meddling friends and neighbors, sizzling chemistry, and heroes who fall hard for the one woman they absolutely did not plan on, you’re in the right place. Jill’s books blend laugh-out-loud moments with emotional gut punches, slow-burn tension, and deeply earned happily ever afters.
She writes the stories she loves to read: small-town romance and romantic comedies packed with heart, heat, second chances, grumpy/sunshine sparks, and the kind of found-family vibes that make you want to move right into the pages. Many of her series are perfect for binge-reading, and a number of her books are available in Kindle Unlimited and at major retailers.
When she’s not writing, she’s probably plotting new ways to torture her characters, avoiding laundry, or daydreaming about fictional men and the strong, complicated women who bring them to their knees—and then making them work for it.

It's kind of odd reading Jill Shalvis's earlier books. You can see how she developed into the author she is today, but everything is just a little less polished. It's also a bit hit or miss with her older books. Some of them I have loved (Serving up Trouble) and some I didn't care much for (Her Knight to Remember). Nothing to Lose by Jill Shalvis falls right in the mediocre pile. It's not great, but not horrific either.
Nothing to Lose is about Jade Barrett, an antique shop owner who's having a very bad day and DEA agent Will Malone who's trying to capture the man who murdered his sister. Jade gets pulled into a crazy adventure with Will, and of course, along the way they fall for each other.
There were some definite Jill-Shalvis moments in Nothing to Lose. Jade, the heroine, felt very much like a Shalvis heroine, and catching her boyfriend sleeping with her bookkeeper in her own store was such a Shalvis plot point. Jade was pretty easy to root for, and I definitely felt for here when her life suddenly went to shit. Jade does make some crazy decisions, which felt more as a way to move the story along that what she would actually do, though.
Will has been haunted by his sister's death, which is understandable. But he's gotten a bit too crazy in hunting down his sister's killer and will do anything he has to. He even ends up getting Jade to help him find the murderer, which probably isn't the best thing because she's a civilian. But he does start to deal with it, and I did grow to like him.
The romance happened super fast. Although I don't mind characters falling for each other quickly, it didn't really work for me here. There wasn't anything about these characters that made me think they specifically belonged together. Although I liked them both, they didn't have a super strong connection, in my opinion.
There is humor in this book, too, but not quite as developed as her current style. While I didn't mind Nothing to Lose, it isn't book I would recommend to someone wanting to try Jill Shalvis out for the first time. This review was originally posted on Quinn's Book Nook
I read this in about 4-5 hours. It was fun, but you can tell it was one of her early pieces. I just didn't believe the characters could fall in love that quickly under the circumstances. You can tell this is an older book. I am so glad she has improved. You can tell it is Jill writing it, but the story was not real enough. If this is your first time reading Jill Shalvis, don't start with this one. Not really worth it. If you are a fan, you will enjoy most of it.
I like Jill Shalvis' work so I tend to pick up these smaller books in between new releases and they're always entertaining. Since they're short they can sometimes feel a little bit rushed, but it still gives me a taste of her humor to hold me over.
The heroine in this book is Jade. She's having the worst day possible. Everything that can go wrong has. It's all much more than a typical bad day. When she thinks she's hit rock bottom, she turns around to find Will standing there. She doesn't know him. She isn't sure if she can trust him, but right now he's all she has. Will, who's desperately seeking the man who killed his sister doesn't want to be tied up with Jade, but seeing her alone and vulnerable eats at him and he decides they can help each other. The story follows them alone thru their journey.
I liked that at the end there was a preview of Rumor Has It from the Animal Magnetism Series. I've been waiting for Kate's story.
Jill Shalvis always entertains and in Nothing to Lose she doesn't disappoint! She adds just the right amount of humor, spice and suspense. Yes, it was on the short side with just around 100 pages but I still enjoyed it very much!
An earlier example of Shalvis' writing which is more romantic suspense than what I am used to. The mixture of the romance with suspenseful moments just does not feel credible to me. It isn't one of her better books but is.entertaining.
This is a re-release of an older book as a digital. It is a quick, cute read. I enjoyed it and I'm glad I read it. It is not very believable in the characters or the plot. But it's a fast, fun little read.
Short but sweet. I think a book so full of action and danger should be a little longer. I knew what the bad guy was after all along. I liked the characters though.
Normally I'm a fan of Jill Shalvis, but this book was just bad. The plot was predictable and the writing was clumsy. Not a book I would recommend at all.
