O testamento
Efter flera svåra år i skuggan av första världskriget ges poeten möjligheten att ostörd vistas på ett litet slott i Schweiz vintern 1920–21. Äntligen kan han återuppta arbetet med diktverket Duinoelegierna som påbörjades 1912. Men ett sågverk i kombination med en nyfunnen kärlek bidrar till att vistelsen resulterar i ett misslyckande. Krisen ger dock upphov till en introspektion och med sin samlade livserfarenhet som klangbotten formulerar Rilke en »sista vilja«.

„Droga do prawdziwej wartości wszystkich dzieł wiedzie przez samotność. Zamknąć się z jakąś książką, z jakimś obrazem, z jakąś pieśnią, na dwa lub trzy dni, poznać jej przyzwyczajenia, kroczyć śladami jej osobliwości, nabrać zaufania do niej, zasłużyć na jej wiarę i coś z nią razem przeżyć: jakieś cierpienie, jakiś sen, jakąś tęsknotę.”
