Declan has worked his ass off to become number one in the underground fighting ring. That success has come from his dedication to winning, part of that dedication is no distractions. So when the beautiful, troubled girl comes in asking for a job he knows that while he feels obligated to help her, he can’t get involved with her.
One second, Declan, that’s all it takes. One second of you being less than a hundred percent, and you’re on the ground while he takes the lead.”
Savannah is at the end of her rope, living in her car, with only three dollars and some change left when she applies for a job with Declan. She knows it is a long shot, and she isn’t qualified, but she has nowhere else to go.
Despite Declan's reservations, he was raised and gentleman and decides he can’t turn his back on Savannah.
Savannah and Declan have an immediate physical attraction, and neither do relationships. Their relationship turns into a fun, flirty friendship with lots of sexy banter.

This is a little different then the typical girl falls for guy, and guy changes his man-whoring ways. In this story, Declan, is actually the one who begins pursing Savannah.
I loved the banter between Declan and Savannah. I loved how sweet Declan was with Savannah. She had a difficult past and I love how he wanted to help her and make her life better. I have to mention how much I loved Declan and his dirty talking ways. The interactions leading up to sex and the sex itself was so HOTT!
I really, really enjoyed this one. It wasn’t a five star read for me, because there were parts that were cheesy and it did slow down towards the end. I get frustrated when couples do not communicate and solve their problems, and while this one wasn’t too bad, it did slow the story down for me.
However, I highly recommend this book if you are looking for a quick, sexy read.

** 2,5-3 "cheesy much?" STARS **

“Slow down there, Kitten, this is our first date. I’m not gonna let you touch my c*ck on our first date. I’m not that kind of guy.”
This book offers something different than what we've gotten used to reading in Romance books over the years. It's not a “insecure and frail girl falls for the broken but sexy bad boy” kinda story. In fact, it's the heroine that is haunted by ghosts from the past and the hero that keeps pursuing the girl this time. And I loved the concept for a while there...I did. But it went downhill pretty quickly.
If you are looking for a book in which the female is the only receiving party in the relationship, constantly trying to push the hero away by uttering hurtful words; in which the male has only eyes for the heroine of the story and suddenly grows a vagina where his hard c*ck and huge balls should be after meeting her, THEN THIS IS THE PERFECT BOOK FOR YOU.
I have to admit, it really was cute at times...but I disagree with the common opinion that a man needs to stop acting like a man to be romantic. I'm weird that way I guess.

Savannah Ryan has a pretty sh*tty life. She is homeless, penniles and terribly lonely, sleeping in her jalopy car at night with only her selfpity to accompany her. Refusing to work at a job where she’d be obliged to sell her body, she is desperately looking for a proper job that would be the first step for a brand new start.
Her search leads her to cross paths with Declan Whitmore, the proud owner of the gym “Whitmore and Son” at day and the most feared fighter of the underground fighting ring called “The Pit” at night. The moment their eyes meet, there is an immediate attraction between them and Savannah can’t take her eyes off this sexy beast with tattoos all over and…OMG is that a lip piercing there?
Being equally allured by Savannah’s looks, Declan gives her a job at the gym. One night though, he finds her sleeping in the back of her car at the parking lot of the gym in the middle of the night and he immediately takes action. He is bringing this woman home right this second and keeping her safe and that’s that! But it won’t be easy to be so close to Savannah and yet not be able to touch her… She is his employee and it wouldn’t be ethical to get involved with her…right?
So what's wrong about this book?
PROBLEM #1: The nightmare of most Romance readers...yes, I am talking about the “insta-love” bullsh*t. Sexual attraction at first glance is understandable, but the male MC to start thinking about the word “love” at the 3rd day of meeting the girl?!
PROBLEM #2: At the beginning of the book, Declan is depicted as this “snarky and dominant” man whore, but throughout the whole book, he is nothing but a fluffy and cute ‘lil panda bear.
Can someone please explain to me how a man that is capable of leaving a naked woman in bed, telling her he will “look for a few condoms” and come back, just to cross the hall and have sex with another girl that is “more to his liking that night”, can change into the most sensitive, thoughtful and giving man to ever set foot on Earth in only 3 FREAKIN' DAYS?!? Maybe I wouldn’t hate the change this much if we were privy to at least his transition period. The sharp change in Declan into the Disney’s Prince Charming, oh so sweet and just TOO PERFECT, only resulted in me praying to God for him to shut his mouth.
PROBLEM #3: Everything about Savannah!
I am stunned to see she might be one of the most selfish, abrasive and ungrateful heroines ever! She keeps taking and taking, giving no thought to the possibility of Declan's heart getting broken. And even when she gives back, it's out of obligation, not of love. I can’t for the life of me understand why Declan is so in love with her!
Also, while reading, I had trouble feeling empathetic about Savannah's terrible past, simply because her explanation of what happened and how traumatic it all has been felt too matter of fact, like she was talking about someone else's pain and suffering. It was confusing.
PROBLEM #4: The ending... Oh God, that horribly cliché ending.
There's this one thing that annoys the sh*t outta me about sex scenes. Let's just call it "irresponsibility". If you couldn't guess what I'm referring to already, then you may look here: This book has one of the worst examples of that "irresponsibility". I'm sorry, but I seriously:
Well, if you can look past all this stuff, then you might actually enjoy this book. The fact that the hero is 100% loyal is a huge plus, that's for sure! ;)

4 Fighting Stars!
Savannah is going through a hard time (actually, a hard life in general) and she ends up looking for a job in a gym. When she asks for the owner she finds out that is no one less than Declan. Sexy, tattooed, badass and champion fighter Declan.
There’s an immediately attraction between them but Savannah's fears stop her from wanting more and for a while they settle on being kind of friends. Except that Declan wants more and is willing to do anything to have her.
What he doesn’t know, is that he’s getting into a fight much harder than those he usually does. And this time he only gets one round.
Rating: 4 Stars.
Storyline: For those of you who love sexy fighters with a huge alpha-male trait… you’re going to LOVE this.
Writing Style: First person. Dual POV. Flawless and engaging.
Character Development: Declan was great. He was sexy and I love how sweet he was with Savanah. The whole “insta-love” thing got a little on my nerves but I got over it pretty quickly. Savanah was annoying as hell, I mean he helped her with EVERYTHING, he did whatever he could for her and half of the time she was acting like an ungrateful little b*tch. She ended up more or less redeeming, but it wasn’t enough.
Steam: HOOT!

☾OH MY FLIPPING GOODNESS! This book came out quite a while ago but as usual, I didn't read it until now...what's new?
☾Declan is like the PERFECT guy. I know perfect in real life in unachievable but I'm pretty sure he's the closest thing to perfect in my book. The way he treats Savannah is how every guy should treat a girl. Even before he got to know her he treated her like gold. Yes, he saved her from sleeping in her car, having to do ridiculous things for money, but most of all he treated her like a normal person.

[#What I wanted more of]- (+) scenes of Declan's matches in the ring!! I mean, Declan is a champion fighter is he not? I was sort of bummed I couldn't witness him busting out even more of his extensive fighting chops.-
Other than that, all in all, it was a lovely, sensual, captivating, and enthralling read that captivated my attention from the very first page and sizzling on all cylinders!
Please, please, Ms. Martin consider with follow up with sequel!! Perhaps a Blake and Macy pairing?!! I felt that Blake and Macy had a lot of potential to expand on singularly and as a couple!! Pretty please?!♥♥

I truly enjoyed this book for the most part, but I'm noticing a trend lately that has my panties in a twist. Why oh why do the majority of the heroines I've been reading about lately insist on keeping their menfolk at arms length for the majority of the book? The couple start to get close and BAM! Misunderstanding followed by all kinds of awkwardness. I. Am. Exhausted by it! Down and Out was well written and I liked the two main characters for the most part, but my enjoyment was hampered by the fact that they didn't actually get on the same page as far as their relationship went until about the 85% mark and by that point I just wanted it to be over.
If these little issues don't bother you or, unlike me you haven't experienced "girl doesn't do relationships" overload, I'd recommend this book. It's hard to say no to those sexy underground fighting dudes.

If you are a fan of the Worth Fighting Series, then Down and Out is for you. It has the right amount of romance and fighting to keep you interested
Savannah
I love me a damsel in distress lady and Savannah fits the bill. She bounces from job to job, doing almost anything she can to save enough money for college. She’s homeless and can barely take care of herself. She finds a help wanted sign in front of a gym and decides to apply.
Declan
Declan is the sexy owner of the gym and automatically has a soft spot for Savannah. She looks disheveled and in a need of rescuing, the only thing is, Declan is no Hero. Declan is a sexy fighter with a bad reputation, but there’s something about Savannah that can’t keep him away from her.

I’m a major fan of fighting books and when it’s revolved around an alpha hero that owns a gym, I dunno, it just gets me happy. Declan is oh lickable and sweet at the same time.
What made me a fan is the dialogue, Down and Out has a lot of it and THANK YOU. I’m never a fan of descriptive writing. I just love the banter between Savannah and Declan. You will be smiling and cracking up.
Declan sees Savannah living in her car and feels really bad so he offers her a place to stay, with him! I know, it makes for a juicy read. Declan and Savannah embark on a light and causal relationship, but of course there is nothing light about Declan.
Overall
Overall, Down and Out was a nice read. I did want a little more tension at times, but maybe because I’m just in an angsty mood. The pace is light and a little slow, which I know will work with a lot of people. If you are a fan of fighting books, then this one is for you.

This book started well, I loved Declan - he was such a darling and underground fighter with tattooed and pierced lips.
But the story went little annoying with her heroine. She ruined the story. Some parts didn't make sense considering her situation. She was too much.
I wouldn't re-read this story again.

Enjoyed this one. Good banter between the characters. Did get a little cheesy towards the end and of course I deducted for gray eyes....Maybe I'll do a longer review later....I'm lazy... :)

Regarding the rating, this is closer to a 2.5 for me because there were aspects of this book I liked. Two of them have to do with plot points. For example, I liked how Declan brought her into his home when he found her homeless, sleeping in her car.
Later on in the book, Savannah was recruited to be part of a new female fighter program at the same underground fighting organization that Declan fights for. That was a unique twist I wasn't expecting.
Unfortunately, after all the training she did, she had to forfeit because it turned out she was pregnant. So this really didn't go anywhere.
The other thing or person I liked was Declan himself. Interestingly enough, he's described in the synopsis as being "snarky and dominant". While he has his moments of expressing both those characteristics, I actually found him to have more of a sensitive and giving nature than anything else.
I saw this in how he has difficulty forgiving his abusive father. I saw this in how took care Savannah and also in how he expressed his love to her even though she couldn't or wouldn't reciprocate. There's definitely a lot to like about Declan, although I have to say that the relationship with Savannah may not have been appropriate since he was her boss.
I also liked some of the humorous situations that happened between Declan and Savannah. One in particular was quite hysterical.
When it came to Savannah, I liked the fact that she was feisty and that she wasn't afraid to stand up for herself, especially after such a rough childhood. However, I did have issues her.
In the prologue, you first learn that she uses sex as a way to forget and/or feel better but ends up feeling empty and used. That piqued my interest and made me wonder how that would be explored in the book.
Later on, she tells Declan about her mother overdosing and having to live in various foster homes as a result, I got the sense of why sex was crutch for her. Yet, her explanation of what happened felt too matter of fact, like she was completely removed.
I felt the same way when she talked about the bullying in school. The way she told the story lacked any type of deep emotion other than her wanting to kick the bully's ass. Both stories should be heart-wrenching; yet, I didn't feel much empathy.
Maybe, if there were some flashbacks so that you can actually "feel" her suffering, that would have brought something more to Savannah as a character. Maybe, if there was more of a description of how she felt as opposed to just stating the info?
Also, the bully plot point didn't really serve much purpose other than her confronting the person who bullied her later on. It didn't feel like it advanced the story other than her giving Declan a hard time for sleeping with that girl in the first place. But hello, it was really none of her business and Declan had already ended it before Savannah came along.
As the story progresses, they eventually agree to a no strings sexual relationship primarily because that's the only kind of relationship she'd agree to. Even when Declan told her that there was a possibility his feelings could get involved, she didn't let that stop her. So now not only am I not feeling that empathic, now I think she's kind of selfish.
Actually, there also just a lot moments in the book that she has no problem taking and taking and doing so in an abrasive and ungrateful manner. When she does give back, it's more out of obligation and not simply because she wants what is best for Declan. To be honest, I don't really feel that Savannah is deserving of Devon's time and attention.
The one chance where what happened could have made me dislike her less happened at almost 90% of the book. It's where she admits to Declan that a foster father blackmailed her to have sex with him so that she wouldn't be kicked out of the home. But she tells him after she's already had sex with him, freaks out because of a flashback and then tells him not to touch her.
When she finally told Declan why she freaked out, he felt really guilty, which was so unfair. If something was a trigger for her, the mature thing would have been to tell this to Declan so that he would have been prepared. Instead, she acted quite selfishly.
I actually think that whole trauma about the foster father could have woven throughout the story. Especially since she felt residual guilt for the fact her body responded, even if her mind didn't. The whole prologue actually would have tied better to this plot point and the story could have been more about Savannah dealing with this guilt, being confused about sex and what it means and Declan's love helping her through this somehow.
The problem is that Savannah is just not fleshed out well enough and the way she is written doesn't really give creedence to why Declan is so in love with her in the first place.
One more thing that didn't make sense to me is given that Declan is MMA fighter, why doesn't he fight? The one opportunity where he would have fought didn't occur because he was attacked and injured the night before his fight. Apparently, this was orchestrated by his opponent.
This whole situation brought up things that didn't go anywhere. Why bring up him being beaten up and vowing to crush his opponent when the fight still doesn't even happen later on on the book? Instead, it becomes about Savannah being a female fighter and that also lead to nowhere.
After all this, they eventually got their HEA; but with an ending that was really abrupt. But by this time, I was more than ready to finish this book.

This book was freaking awesome!
I'll admit that I was a little hesitant to start this just because I'm burned out on fighter books. But once I started, I just couldn't put it down.
I completely fell in love with Declan. He was the perfect mix of tough alpha and sweetness. He knew the perfect things to say that had me melting. And I loved the banter between him and Savannah. They had me cracking up.
Unfortunately, there was one thing that didn't work for me...Savannah. Don't get me wrong, for the most part I liked her. But she spent so much time running away and saying awful things that I really came to dislike her. And every time she would treat Declan like crap, she would act like the injured party. And that just plain pissed me off. It got to the point that I thought she didn't deserve Declan. I realize that she had a really tough life and bad things happened to her, but her actions still ticked me off.
Overall, I really did love this book, and I'll probably read it again. I'm hoping that Declan's brother gets a book.

Savannah is jobless,homeless,and broke. She sleeps in her car and only has 3 dollars and some change for food. She goes to a Help Wanted gym for a job. All other jobs she applied for wont take her because she's a high school dropout. When she walked in Whitmore & Son Gymnasium she meets Declan aka sexy boss. Declan eventually found out that kitten is sleeping in her car. He takes her in and let's her stay at his apartment.
They soon agree to have sex-without-attachment( he even wrote a legal contract that say if things don't work out she can still stay with him and still have her job)
can they really do this without feelings? Can savannah/kitten keep up the barrier she has to keep to distant her feelings, or will Declan be abel to knock it down ?
Can I just say that this book is funny as fuck. I LOVED there argument it was so funny.
Declan- hot as hell and kind and sweet, I just love him.
Savannah aka kitten- I loved her also. She's such a bad ass and a strong women. I love when a girl is strong.

5+++ 'I NEED more Declan' stars!!
How do I even begin to describe how much I adored this book? I have 2 favorite types of books, fighters and MC's. Down and Out is about Declan Whitmore who happens to be a fighter. So when I was contacted through my blog to read this I jumped at the chance.
Savannah Ryan is down on her luck. Moving from one shit job to another she finally decides it's time to find a job where she isn't tempted to do things she wouldn't do normally. That's when she applies for a job at a gym and meets the "Tattooed package of sin" Declan.
Declan doesn't do relationships. He does however, have one girl who seems to hang around and takes whatever scraps of attention he throws her way. Jamie is the type of character you want to throat-punch. She is willing to do anything to get attention, even if it's giving blowjobs to Declan's friends trying to make him jealous. Which doesn't work, it only makes him realize how much she isn't girlfriend material.
When Savanna walks into Declan's gym, things get pretty interesting very fast. Savannah isn't one to bow down, she is snarky and won't put up with any shit. And boy does Declan like that about her. But when Declan learns she is living in her car, he won't take no for an answer and moves her things into his apartment above the gym. <-----I wouldn't put up a fight, hehe.
Every word out of Declan's mouth is pure gold. I want Declan Whitmore to be real so I can have him say these things to me.
"Other girls?" A crooked smile lifts his lips as he reaches up to brush my hair aside. "Kitten, the only one I see is you."
Did your panties melt?? Mine sure as hell did. And this...
"Why?" I whisper. " what do you get out of it." You don't get something for nothing. He's got to have an end game. "Isn't it obvious?" he murmurs against my skin. "I'd get you."
Gah!!! Pure gold!!
"No matter how fast you run, I'll always be right behind you."
I could go on and on about all the things that Declan says, I think I highlighted 20 or more quotes from him. Who doesn't love a cocky man who is sweet too? It's the perfect combination for me. Cocky and sweet, that's the perfect way to describe Declan.
Kelley R. Martin knows how to write a love story! It isn't all soft and lovey-dovey. It's heart-felt and emotional, it's REAL!

I freaking loved this book! Declan is totally perfect in every way! *dreamy sigh* I came across this randomly and it called to me so I started it immediately! I can honestly say there wasn't anything in Down and Out that I didn't like! The banter between Declan and Savannah was hilarious and the sexual tension was palpable. I was so ready for them to get it on! ;) I did get bothered with how Savannah treated Declan a few times but I also could see where she was coming from seeing as her childhood was pretty craptastic. I seriously can't wait for more from these two!

This book had a good storyline to it. It went through some difficult topics and some of the characters were a bit whiney but for the most part it was a good read. It was very emotional but I have to say that I fell in love with Declan from the very beginning. He was one sweet sexy alpha that's for sure!

Reviewing Down and Out was tough for me. I liked the book but I think I could have liked it more. Declan was everything I could want in a book boyfriend, alpha, sexy, tattooed, potty mouthed, underground mma fighter.. And he’s was so sweet and caring. When he finds out his new employee, Savannah, is homeless and sleeping in her car he is really upset. With sexy alpha style he grabs her stuff and moves her into his condo above his business. He opens up his home, gives up his bed and does everything her can to help Savannah get back on her feet. The two have great chemistry and there is lots of sexual tension. But to be honest, I did not like Savannah most of the book. While I enjoyed the back and forth banter between Declan and Savannah, she mostly came across as stupidly stubborn, ungrateful and wishy washy. A couple of times I wanted to punch her the mouth for some of the hurtful things she said to a guy who did everything he could to help her and laid his heart at her feet. In the end she pulled her head out of her butt so there is a HEA and more. I hope there are books for his brother Blake and friend Marcus.

That's it, it's my destiny that if I reallyreally like the blurb and I think the book is going to be fantastic then the reality is just the opposite:(
I already stopped reading this book on last Sunday, but I thought I was definitely going to finish it and now it's basically been a whole week and I just can't..I have no motivation.
Why DNF? Because I HATE(it's a strong word I know) the heroine, she's soooooo annoying and if the main character isn't working for me then it's a dealbreaker, unfortunately.
And yeah I was at 74% and they weren't even like together-together yet. I understand that the heroine comes from bad childhood and she's broken, but gosh the man is so helpful, but nope she's just making drama all the freaking time.

I have a new Book Boy Friend! Yes indeed, Declan Whitmore swept me off my feet when I wasn't expecting it...
Down and Out is a deliciously sexy story by Kelley R Martin. Its one of the few stories set with a MMA/Fight centered character that I’ve read and if this is good example, it set the bar for me, very high. It’s the story of Savannah Ryan a truly the down on her luck girl who's smart mouth and brave attitude make her the perfect match for Declan Whitmore. Savannah's not experienced the best of times lately, she’s young and without a home or job when she applies to work at Declans gym.
Who is the Declan that has stolen my heart? Declan initially comes across as a sex addicted alpha man ( if he cared to exhibit any of his Alpha qualities). When we meet Declan he’s realizing that his current F%#$- buddy isn’t doing it for him any longer and he is ready to move on. But when he does, he classes it up a bit when a sweet young thing who, desperate for a job, makes her way into his life. Savannah talks him into hiring her and their instant connection and attraction pave the way forward. Savannahs smart mouth is a match for Declans bad ass Alpha quality, one that only Savannah seems to bring out in him. With Savannah, Declan finds his true match:
“Huh, I never thought I’d be into a chick with balls, let alone one that’s got a pair this big. They rival the size of mine, easily”
These two are a joy to watch. Their banter and quipping make for a fast and at times funny read. They are quick to connect at a deeper level and this brings out a tenderness between them that is swoon worthy, and this is another moment where Declan stole my heart:
“I’m not trying to woo you, I’m trying to ruin you for all others”
He’s just a good person who knows right and wrong and practices what he preaches ( err, well mostly). While Declan seems intent and more certain about his growing feelings for Savannah, she becomes more intent on pulling away and her smart mouth gets her trouble, far too often. But she makes me laugh:
“I swear to God if I look over and see you feeling sorry for me, I’m gonna punch you”
So while Declan finds himself all in, Savannah begins to doubt his feelings for her and the two end up miss-communicating, more often than not, and on epic levels. Their story is bittersweet and a delight to read, while at times heartbreaking. At times Savannah is utterly frustrating but when it counts, she gets herself together and recognizes that Declan is what he says and she learns to give over and trust him. It’s just a bumpy ride getting there.

“I swear to God if I look over and see you feeling sorry for me, I’m gonna punch you”
So while Declan finds himself all in, Savannah begins to doubt his feelings for her and the two end up miss-communicating, more often than not, and on epic levels. Their story is bittersweet and a delight to read, while at times heartbreaking. At times Savannah is utterly frustrating but when it counts, she gets herself together and recognizes that Declan is what he says and she learns to give over and trust him. It’s just a bumpy ride getting there.
5++ stars and recommendation in erotic/romance genre reads.

I effin' LOVED this book Declan he has so much swagger, "I saw the way you were looking at me earlier," he continues. "I seriously doubt you'd be anything but nice to my balls." He's always trying to ease Savannah of her uneasiness, "don't ever feel like you need to hide something like that from me, okay? If you need to do something, do it." I gave him a stiff nod, still steadfastly avoiding his gaze as he adds, "unless you're stealing from me. Then by all means hide it, because I don't want to know." There are some scenes our Mr. Declan isn't so suave and the time he got his hand caught in the cookie drawer was funny as s***, "I yank my boxers back up as she turns and smacks her face on the open door. She cups her nose in her hands as I wince and rush over to her." (Use your imagination on this one ladies.) I loved how he was so far in for Savannah that he would do anything for her, "okay..." I try to roll my eyes as I follow her down the aisle. She's in charge of the cooking, so if she says she wants to make it from scratch instead of heating up the contents of a single jar, who am I to argue?" Savannah is a good hearted girl but sometimes she asks the dumbest questions and Declan of course gives her the dumbest answers, "unless you want to hold it while I take a leak, I think I've got it." But good hearted or not our girl knows how to play the game, "I know what you're doing, and it's not fair. I can't think when all the blood's rushing to my d***, so please, for the love of God, put some clothes on." Declan also isn't afraid to admit his secrets, "do you think it's weird that I used your shampoo? Because I did. I might've even jacked off once or twice in the shower while smelling it and thinking of you." If I haven't convince you to read the book yet I must be losing my touch because this book was seriously the s***.

Nothing creative or original with this story but the writing style was nice - too many loose ends upon completion for my preference
It's pretty cliché from beginning to end but it did still managed to be likeable. The hero and heroine both felt like dozens of other characters I've come across in books. There seemed to be nothing too original about their personalities or the plot. I also tired of them constantly swooning over one another. After a certain point, we get it, you find one another hot in every possible way. Then, of course, they have to fight their attraction to one another while living together, working together, and flirting with each other non-stop. That became tiresome. Once they did finally get it on (no spoiler there because you could tell from the get go this was going to happen) the sex was minimal. The characters felt really juvenile to me as far as their personalities went. They continually argued, got their feelings hurt etc. That being said, it was still an ok read even though it had that "cookie cutter" style feel to it. An epilogue would have bumped this one up a half star for me personally and worked wonders. I'm guessing another book will come out to continue their story at a later date? I doubt I will read it, but I would have an epilogue would have worked wonders here. I did enjoy this writers style and will check out more of her work.
