But when Bill is accused of murdering Jake's business partner after falling in love with the man's much younger wife, Jake has no choice but to believe his son and call in someone with much more experience in such sinister matters--his brother, Peter.

Patrick Quentin, Q. Patrick and Jonathan Stagge were pen names under which Hugh Callingham Wheeler (19 March 1912 – 26 July 1987), Richard Wilson Webb (August 1901 – December 1966), Martha Mott Kelley (30 April 1906–2005) and Mary Louise White Aswell (3 June 1902 – 24 December 1984) wrote detective fiction. In some foreign countries their books have been published under the variant Quentin Patrick. Most of the stories were written by Webb and Wheeler in collaboration, or by Wheeler alone. Their most famous creation is the amateur sleuth Peter Duluth. In 1963, the story collection The Ordeal of Mrs. Snow was given a Special Edgar Award by the Mystery Writers of America.

Ένα από τα πιο σπάνια αστυνομικά μυθιστορήματα, το οποίο δεν έχει επανεκδοθεί στα ελληνικά. Η πλοκή διαθέτει ιδιαίτερη δομή, αφού απομακρύνεται από το μοτίβο των 'whodunit' μυθιστορημάτων αλά Άγκαθα Κρίστι και 'προσεγγίζει' μια ψυχογραφική μελέτη χαρακτήρων - εντυπωσιάζει η σχέση του βασικού ήρωα με το γιό του. Με φόντο τις διαφορές μεταξύ της αμερικάνικης και της βρετανικής κουλτούρας, αλλά και της ζωής των καλλιτεχνών και των συγγραφέων σε φημισμένα μέρη όπως το Γκρήνουϊτς Βίλλιτζ της Νέας Υόρκης, ο δολοφόνος είναι υπεράνω πάσης υποψίας μέχρι τις τελευταίες σελίδες.

Po osliznutí osmdesátými léty jsem si potřeboval vydechnout, a tudíž sáhl po dalším Patricku Quentinovi, poslední knize z Duluthovské řady. I když tady už manželský pár hraje jen vedlejší roli a pozornost je soustředěna na bratra Petera Duluthe, který se pohybuje ve vydavatelské branži, má trauma z mrtvé manželky a problémy s nesnesitelným synem. Ovšem když se syn stane podezřelým z vraždy, je na otci, aby ho z toho vysekal.

Když jsem to četl, měl jsem i pocit, že by se tahle dvě stě stránková knížka dala přetvořit i v něco zásadnějšího a většího… a pak mi došlo, že to funguje hlavně proto, že to má jen dvě stě stran. Kdyby to bylo napsáno dneska, tak bychom jednak přišli o věty typu „holka nemá nosit srdce na dlani… zvláště, když je širší v bocích“, ale hlavně by se všechno rozkreslovalo, a čtenář by měl dost času, aby se zorientoval. Ve spoustě literární omáčky se buď autor prokecne, o co komu skutečně jde… nebo se tomu tak usilovně vyhýbá, že je to čtenáři stejně jasné. Kdyžto tady, jak se příběh soustřeďuje jen na to podstatné a jak je hrdina stále v presu a děj se valí kupředu, nedá vám autor moc šanci, abyste mu nahlíželi do karet.

Zase na druhou stranu, tehdy vám prošlo, když jste prostě vyhlásili, že se ti dva viděli a okamžitě do sebe zamilovali. Dneska byste to museli dlouze vysvětlovat, věrohodně popisovat, co je k tomu vedlo, čehož následkem je to, že knihy jsou dneska mnohem tlustší a mnohem méně zábavné.

Mimochodem, říkal jsem si, proč tady vůbec udělal z hrdiny bráchu Petera Dulutha, když je to v podstatě absolutně klasický román s neprávem obviněnou postavou a spoustou nepříjemných postav (obzvláště uměleckých autorů, ti jsou ze všeho nejhorší)… ale došlo mi, že autor potřeboval někoho, kdo by hrdinovi bez nějakého většího důvodu věřil a pátral v jeho prospěch. K čemuž je bratr ideální.

I loved this book- my favourite read so far this year! It was really well constructed and kept my interest the whole way through. The language was terrific and I enjoyed the great character development. Superb!

Not the best detective novel in the world but a cracking 50-60 pages at the end where it all builds to a definite 'whodunnit?'
Following publishers Sheldon and Deluth, Jake Deluth narrates this book a partner to the murdered Ronald Sheldon and all fingers point to his son as the murderer. My only gripe with this novel is that the characters all seem a tad too stiff and wooden, there's depth in character but none of them seem all that believable. As I said, the last quarter of the book builds in pace and opens up the characters a lot better, but other than that it's a rather standard detective novel.
