An emotional novel about not seeing what's right in front of you — and not knowing what you've got until it's gone.

Cate has always taken Nick for granted. Through a wild youth of mistakes, bad choices, and self-destructive behaviour, Nick has been the one thing that Cate could count on. She knows he loves her, but she can't love him back. He's too perfect, too strong, too caring. She has darkness in her that can't handle that much light.

When an unexpected pregnancy forces them into a marriage of convenience, Cate hopes that Nick can love her enough for the both of them. But as time passes, Nick grows frustrated and finally decides to cut himself loose. Will his absence prove to Cate just how much she needs him?

At First Sight: Cate and Nick have always been friends, and no matter what type of self-destructive behavior Cate indulged in, Nick was always there for her.

Even when she turned out pregnant and - not sure if the baby was his - he married her, determined to make a go of it, since he has always been in love with her.

But they struggle through the first few years of their marriage, as Cate isn't sure she can love Nick as he deserves and he eventually tires and starts to pull back, prompting Cate to realize how much she does love him... even as he decides it's time to let her go.

Second Glance: Almost Mine is a bit hard to review. For one thing, I Really liked the IDEA of the story, of these two friends tossed together and forced to deal with their feelings for each other.

But the execution wasn't stellar.

Most of it because of the structure of the story. The first chapter opens with them already strangled and them having an awkward dinner, then it goes back to them and the events that lead them to marry and how their marriage became such a mess even if they are young and attractive and successful.

The trouble is that MOST of the book is spent there in this prolonged flash back, and you already know it's going to end bad and that they don't get together and that they are going to screw up, but there is absolutely no tension since we're being told everything after the fact.

There is no big reveal of mystery.

Then we go back to the present and everything that was wrong with them gets inconclusively solved in a couple of chapters. You never see them work it out, or what's different that this time they are going to work. It's just all magically fixed.

Bottom Line: I didn't like Almost Mine, is not a terrible book but the style of it left a lot to be desire regarding the narrative structure. And it definitely needed more time to develop

Almost Mine is not like other romance I've read. The story is about a couple's history together and the expanse of trials that lead them to the present moment in their relationship. What I enjoyed, was the beginning chapter was almost the ending. The following chapters then showed how the couple got to that point. Structuring the novel this way increased my curiosity. I was always wondering how their relationship could ever have become so broken and how would they ever recover.
Overall, it was a sweet story that showed how, despite the hardships in life, if you truly love someone, you need to fight to keep them in your life.

To be honest, just from the blurb, I would not have come near this book at all. However, when I inadvertently won a preview from a giveaway, I could hardly refuse to, at least, have a quick read. My reluctance doubled at the end of the first chapter as the scene is set for something achingly heartbreaking though I kept pushing on for a few more chapters before I reached the breaking point. The only way that I’m going to continue to read it is if the ending is worth it soooo…. Yes, I had a squeeze at the epilogue.

My hesitation to read this book is this part of the blurb, “Cate has always taken Nick for granted… She knows he loves her, but she can't love him back... She has darkness in her that can't handle that much light.” And as soon as I’ve read the first few chapters, I knew that this was just too close to my own personal concerns and I really didn’t need to have that fleshed out in what I’m reading. Nevertheless, I did think the ending was worth the effort so I ploughed on and finished the book.

Cate was one confused girl and it started in childhood when she witnessed her parents’ broken marriage. She began to struggle with her identity, her self-worth, and looked for it in all sorts of places. Through all this, however, Nick, was always there for her. He loves her and promises to always be there for her. Is Nick and his love enough for Cate to find herself? Is he patient enough for her to finally realise what he means to her?

Aside from my initial hesitation, I found that it was exacerbated by the first chapter being set in the present time and for the chunk of the book to being flashbacks which spanned many years. You’d have to read through all these years before finally coming back to the present (the last 2 chapters). This makes a slow reading but all the cheesy romance kind of made up for the slowness. Remember Persuasion by Jane Austen? The first reading feels so slow but that’s because we’re set up for a delicious suspense.

I love Cate and Nick because of their steadfastness to each other. I could really sympathise with Cate and was cheering her on when she’s fighting hard to keep the future bright for both of them. I love Nick for his faithfulness to Cate throughout the years and for his adoration of her. Who wouldn’t want to have their own ‘Nick’ if this is how he thinks / sees of you…

‘…when I see you, my heart races and when you leave it stops. When you smile I smile and when you cry I want to bring hell down on the reason for your tears. All I know is that I would stop at nothing to give you everything, and I’d do this because I know that every need that you have comes from the deepest part of your heart, and not from an entitled want. You’re breathtaking when you daydream as you watch the wind blow through the tree tops, and when you use the very tips of your fingers to tuck your soft hair behind your ears and when you dip your chin and blush when someone gives you a compliment--.’

Yeah… cheesy…. *sighs* but I’d definitely fall for it every time ;D

Almost Mine is most definitely a romance novel though as I identified with Cate so keenly, it has dug deeper into my soul. I feel for Cate as she went through each of her ups and downs, the angst, the guilt, and finally acceptance. To learn that to love is to forgive and to forgive is to love… I am utterly relieved of having finished reading though I want to read it again.

This was meant to be a book review though it turned out to be rather of a self-introspection but I’m posting this anyway because I’d like the author to know that she’s touched at least one random soul in the world

Thanks to Escape Publishing via NetGalley for copy of eARC

Ps: FYI, I am happily married and I have just made sure (again!) that hubby knows I love him (I do!) though he knows, by now, that acts of service is my love language so I think we’re sorted ;)

he synopsis for this book had a promising hook for the kind of books I like to read:

Cate has always taken Nick for granted. Through a wild youth of mistakes, bad choices, and self-destructive behaviour, Nick has been the one thing that Cate could count on. She knows he loves her, but she can’t love him back. He’s too perfect, too strong, too caring. She has darkness in her that can’t handle that much light.

It sounded like a cute little romance between two long time friends that develops despite all the crazy stuff that happens in their lives. I guess, maybe it could have been, but I couldn’t get past the first three chapters. I dislike writing harsh and negative review but ever since I tried reading this book all I’ve done is complain to my friends about how bad it is and how I can’t get through it. So I finally decided it was time to put it to bed.

My main problem with this book, or at least the first three or four chapters, is that is is sloooooow and so boring. It starts out with the main character, Cate, thinking about her life and how she wants to win back her husband’s affections despite the obvious chasm that has grown between them. Will doesn’t even stay in their house anymore but lives in the office near their winery/restaurant.

When her endeavors don’t work she goes into flashback mode. Except it’s the crappy kind of flashback. Chapter two starts with her telling us she has to explain how her and Will met and how they got to the point of the first chapter. Oooookaaaay. This is where my issues began. There’s nothing wrong with flashbacks in a novel. And there’s nothing wrong with starting a novel in the present and telling the rest of it in flashback. If you do it right. This was not done right. At least not as far as I got into it.

Chapter three was just her telling us what happened. There’s no actual action. Stuff happens but I felt so detached from it I couldn’t even begin to care about the events or the people. Chapter three was more of the same. By the end of that chapter I couldn’t take it anymore.

I kind of scanned ahead some but it was just more of the same and none of what I read held my interest and I greatly disliked Cate who was using Will throughout her life when it was convenient for her because Will was in love with her. Despicable (but also can be a good story).

So my ultimate rating is DNR so my review should be taken with a grain of salt. Read it yourself and decide if it gets better after the first three chapters. Maybe it will be your kind of book. It just wasn’t mine.

I really tend to enjoy books about best friends ending up together, so I was decently excited about this book, especially because the blurb told me that their marriage was one of convenience, just something that kind of happened, so I was definitely intrigued. Unfortunately, I just didn't enjoy the book was much as I was hoping for.

The main character in the book, and the person whose POV the story is told through is Cate. Cate never seems to recover from her mother abandoning her and her father, and then when she is a teenager she finds out her mother has died and it turns out she had a whole new family. It crushed Cate and she went through a dark time in her life, full of depression and bad decision making, especially when it comes to men. When things finally start to turn around for her it's because she ends up pregnant by her best friend (who she slept with after her and her boyfriend broke up). Turns out her best friend, Nick, loved her since he was a kid, and wants to marry her, even though he knows that she doesn't love him. And basically the whole first half of the book is like that, Cate comes off as an incredibly selfish person and you can't help but feel bad for Nick. Nick is completely in love with her and Cate just wants what she wants and doesn't really care about anyone else but her own personal priorities.

Then the second half of the book just completely shifts. Suddenly Cate realizes she loves Nick, only Nick is in his own pity party because you is infertile and he is determined to push Cate away. Don't get me wrong, I know infertility issues can definitely be painful and cause a lot of problems in relationships, but this was just so sudden. One minute he was worshiping Cate all the time, but then what seems like the next day he stops talking to her, sleeping next to her, acknowledging her at all. Cate comes up with this plan to get him jealous, which was... let's just say... interesting. And then it turns out their mutual friends, Lucy, has a thing for Nick (which everyone knew all along) and makes her move.

I dunno I didn't really identify with anyone in the book, not even the secondary characters. I spent a lot of time just feeling sorry for the characters, or being angry with them for acting the way they did. At the end of romance books, when people get together, I normally get happy about it, I didn't have this kind of reaction in this book. I don't know this book just wasn't for me, I think maybe it would work well with readers who have more in common with the characters.

Almost Mine was not at all what I was expecting. It’s a sad, heartbreaking story about realizing what’s right in front of you. There is some great character development in this book. It spans over the years of Cate & Nick’s relationship. Which starts when they’re 20′s. Cate really progressed really well as a character. She doesn’t start as the most likeable person. Until the second half of the book I didn’t really care for. She starts off as a shallow and self-absorbed person but as the story progresses we see her grow as a character. The first half of the book provides the reader with the back story of Nick & Cate. we get to see how different Cate is from the past and present. We also get to see how the situation with Cate has changed Nick.

The second half of the book is what really grabbed me. We see an older more mature Cate. Who for the first time has to fight for Nick’s love. This is something that until now she felt she always had. When the story started Nick was the one who had unrequited feelings but now it seems it’s Cate. I really liked reading this aspect of the book. We get to read how Cate slowly falls in love with Nick but unfortunately it might be too late for her and Nick.

Aside from the wonderful character development we have plot lines I wasn’t expecting. Nick & Cate married because she was pregnant but sadly a day before the wedding they lose the baby. As the years progress we read about their heartbreaking problems with fertility. Although I am not at a stage in my life where I want children. I still really felt for them. You can feel how desperately they want a child.

Due to their fertility problems Nick starts to blame himself and starts to distant himself emotionally from Cate. This point in the book really hit me in the feels. There was so much angst! I loved it! Cate is doing all she can to win Nick back but it seems there might be another for Nick!

This book had all of my favorite things : unrequited love, angst (tons), and a good romance. I do have to say that I felt the ending was a little rushed. We had Cate doing all she could to win back Nick and when she did it felt a little too easy. I would have liked some grovel from Nick (hehe) but that’s just personal preference. Overall, I have to say I was pleasantly surprised and can’t wait to read more from Lea Darragh!

*I recieved this book via Netgalley in exchange for a honest review of the book.

ALMOST MINE by Lea Darragh is a debut novel by an Australian author. The book looks at love (I know not a surprise when you are reading a romance novel) from the point of view as to ask is it enough for one half of a relationship to love strongly enough to compensate for two? In the first half of the book, which was quite slow to get going for me, Cate is quite an unlovable person; she is shallow, brattish and self-absorbed. How Nick could stay loyal to her was beyond me – he must be a saint! But no, about half way through the book things turn around. Nick the saint become Nick the I really want to smack you silly while Cate finally matures and realises that she loves Nick dearly and wants only him. When she promised to love in him for better and for the worst she didn’t love Nick but he said he had enough love for the two of them so she went ahead with the ceremony. When they went through a personal crisis he pushes her away and moved out to live in his office. A real turn around to the first half. I now found myself loving Cate as a character and really disliking the precious princess of a Nick.

I like it when there is real growth found in a character and there certainly was with Cate. The book opens with Cate about to make a final stand to bring back her estranged husband, then the story goes back to their childhood how they meet, become best friends how she goes off the rails and becomes quite a bad girl. Nick is always there for her, and then they marry. I felt that this went on a bit too long – I understand that the background needs to be filled in and I am certainly the first to complain when background information isn’t given. However in this instance there may have been a tad too much. Still once they got married the story settled down and I settled down to enjoy the story.

I love how the setting was on a winery – and one with a restaurant even – love wineries and love even more wineries were you can sit and taste their wines with a meal. ALMOST MINE is Lea Darragh’s first novel, and I am glad to say that she is already working on her next which I will certainly keep an eye out for.

The first chapter of Almost Mine is what appears to be the books ending with Cate ready to attempt to get her husband back (he's been living in one of the outbuildings for a few months). It then goes back and introduces us to Cate and Nick who are in their late teens and have known each other since they were toddlers. They love each other but only Nick is actually IN love with Cate. They have been best friends all their lives and are always there for each other. Since Cate had pretty rocky teen years Nick was there for Cate more than the other way around. They get married but Nick knows that Cate is not in love with him but he loves her so much that he is willing to marry her anyway.

Cate is not a likable person in the first half of the book. She is pretty self-centered and not at all considerate.
I found it hard to believe that Nick loved her so much. About half way through the book Cate matures and finally sees that she is in love with Nick! But is it too late? They agreed to get married because Cate was pregnant but lost the baby just before the wedding. They decided to marry anyway. Cate really, really wanted children so Nick felt his sole purpose was to give them to her. When he found out he was sterile, he started to pull back from Cate thinking she should be with someone who could give her children. By this time Cate realized that she wants Nick more than children but they aren't communicating so he doesn't know this.

This was a well written, emotional book with great descriptions. I was worried that Nick was going to leave before Cate got to tell him how she really feels. I thought the characters were perfect for the book. I liked watching them grow and mature. Both Nick and Cate changed dramatically as they got older.

I won this book in giveaway.

I loved this book but this one was hard because sometimes i felt like i didn't like it, dragged too much, always the same drama but all the same i loved it because of those thinking.
So it was pretty simple 2 kids/best friend and world ended when the momma left. So rebellious and searching for a kind of life leaving the boy next door heartbroken with the knowledge. Then baby then lost.
marriage- childless.
childless - set free - scheme
so dramas? yes. around and always the same ? yes.
but it was meant to happen in this book. i would think like that. so i felt this book quite realistic and simple.
just i didn't like the third person in this book, what a bitch.
anyway, it was logic and understandable. i understood more by the end. the biggest reason behind, the redemption.
it was heart wrenching and beautiful to read his love for her, his obligation which she wanted to make him understand that she was truly in love with him that he was her life if things didn't turn the way expected it will be fine. But that was hard since she knew that was her fault. she kept fighting for them first for their future. she understood with time and when she was ready how she was willing to love him. yeah for me it was willing. she always loved him but she chose someone else because of her mom. that love scared her. in time she came to understand everything.
it was really beautiful how far how strong and how sync they were together.

I was given this as a complimentary read from Harlequin Enterprises Australia via Net Galley.

I really loved the sound of this book. I still did like it, but it seemed like a book back to front.

The opening chapters were about her trying to get 'him back' but it went from past to present and more past, then more present which was very confusing. I wanted a nice flowing easy read, which I thought this one was, not too much head work. I didn't find this to be the case, it was a rather 'concentrate and keep up' factor. I couldn't allow anyone to interupt me or I'd loose whether I was in the past or the present!

On the whole, it was a lovely cheesy romance which lets take it, everyone loves now and again, and this one is no exception.

On the whole it was a likeable read, just not an easy one.

Almost Mine by Lea Darragh, Nick has always been Cate’s safe place to go whenever things got bumpy in her life. He has always been there for her even when she has made really bad choices and not judging her likes other have. And when she did some really bad things he was always there for her and knew what to do even if she didn’t.

There were a few times when things got farther than just friendship and then Cate would just push Nick away, and even then he would stay by her side. Unfortunately in one of those little more than friend times, Cate ends up pregnant. Read More...

Almost Mine takes a whole different perspective on the story of love. It was a bit sad at times actually, as it was told from the POV of Cate who didn't love Nick as he loved her. He knew but believed he could take care of her and she'd eventually come to love him for what he could provide. Cate and Nick had been friends since childhood and he'd loved her all those years. There is a lot of background information but it was provided without interrupting the flow of the story.

This book was a good read with the exception that it dragged in some parts. I caught myself skimming over parts which isn't something that I normally do. The idea of the storyline was good I just think that it could have been set up and written a little different to make it better. I did love the characters and thought they was perfect for the book.
