The Angel's Covenant

Rate this book
Elina will never forget the dark angel who came to her village and killed her family. She holds his image close to her heart, waiting for her chance to avenge those she loved. She does not know why she was chosen to save humanity, only that she is in a race against time itself. The fallen will stop at nothing to get to her. Malach is her guardian angel chosen to protect and train her. She should not have feelings for him; she fights it every day. In the quiet moments they hear the whispered question “Are you Shadow or Light?” It is the question they struggle with every day. Each stolen glance and soft touch brings them closer to breaking the Angel’s Covenant.

Malach is an Archangel chosen as the guardian of hope. His promise was to protect and guide her until she is ready to reunite her people. When his brother chose to fall to earth, he betrayed them all. Why would an Angel choose humanity over heaven? Trouble is brewing amongst the angels. Some feel that humanity is the problem, but Malach knows the truth. Humanity is the key to peace. Elina is the only hope they have against the dark angel, for he is building an army bent on ruling Heaven and Earth.

I don't know where to start with this one. The premise had potential. It could have been good. It fell short of that mark.

1. Poor editing.
2. Which possibly wouldn't have made a difference, because the writing needed help, aside from the editing.
3. No world building. Scenes were set, but there were no rules. Basically, whatever the author needed to have happen could happen.
4. Angel. Shifters. Seriously. The main angel shifts into a dragon. There's an eagle/angel shifter. And a raven.
5. The love triangle. It was so forced. There was literally nothing between Elina and Jake, and then he took her hand and told her she was the one for him. There was nothing before that, for 65% of the book!

I received a free copy of this book for an honest review. But reviewing this book was not so easy, because while there were a lot of good things in it, there were also several issues that took away from the enjoyment of reading it.
The Angel’s Covenant revolves around a group known as Watchers, whose mission is to watch over humanity, naturally. Their friends and allies are known as Keepers, who are similar, but have added powers that they can use to protect the Watchers. These Watchers and Keepers are in a battle against a fallen angel and his demonic minions who wish to pretty much take over the world for themselves.
The book’s strength is in the author’s story-telling ability. Ms. Landes can describe scenes of otherworldly beauty or gory violence equally well. Her prose is clear and straightforward, without any meandering or complex sentences which lose the reader halfway through. She paints strong visual pictures that allow the reader to feel he is right in the middle of the battles between the demons and the protectors of humanity. She is adept at pacing, and the book never drags or goes off on tangents.
Although the story, and the mythology behind the different groups, seems to be more supernatural than the Christian Fantasy the book is billed as, this wasn't a major concern, as long as the roles and the powers of each group is spelled out and internally consistent.
This brings me to one of the problems I had: We know very little about who, or what, these people, who are there to protect humanity, are. For example, I had no way of knowing what abilities the Watchers or Keepers had, so if in the middle of some crisis one of them suddenly created a wall of energy for protection, or turned cave-paintings into warriors, I wondered why they could do that. It felt like the author simply made up whatever powers she wanted whenever it was convenient for the characters to have them. When this happened there was little real tension, because there was no way of knowing how much danger any of them were in at any given time, since they always had hidden and unexplained talents which could get them out of trouble.
This problem could have been solved by spending more time on the training that the main character, Elina, undergoes over the years with her guardian angel, Malach. I imagine Ms. Landes might have been concerned that too much detail about this training would have slowed her story down (and it certainly is fast-paced). In this case, however, a deeper look at her powers and how she learned to handle them would make the abilities she and her friends display more “realistic” within the context of the story, and perhaps make the book that much more satisfying.
While the story was interesting, it was also a bit unclear. For example, why were certain people descendants of a long line of Watchers, while others seemed to be the only Watchers in their family? And what exactly do the Watchers do? (They haven’t exactly kept the world safe from the predations of evil, whether human or otherwise, for the past two millennia. Nor did their watching ability prepare them for the attack on their own village by the demons.) Were the demons spiritual beings, or physical? (They certainly died bloody deaths, their bodies often ripped apart. This made me think that a well-armed military division might have been able to handle them without too much trouble.) I also wasn't sure why the fallen angel would want to fight the Watchers. There were so few of them, and they were isolated on a ranch in the middle of nowhere, I thought he could do pretty much as he wanted with the rest of the human race and just avoid the Watchers totally, without having to confront them. It wasn't clear what they could have done had he decided to hurt any of the 7 billion other inhabitants of the world.
This was the kind of story that I enjoyed while I was reading it, but after putting the book down left me scratching my head. Perhaps in the sequels, some of these matters will be clarified, and perhaps some of my complaints won’t be of any concern to other readers. But these were some of the things that took away from my enjoyment of the book.
Finally, and briefly, a couple of other reviews mentioned that this book needs a good edit. I add my voice to theirs and hope that Ms. Landes does take the time to get her manuscript cleaned up, and doesn't go releasing the sequel before making sure that it, too, is ready for prime time.

I finally gave up the ghost at 82%. I just couldn't finish this one. The blurb alludes to an epic battle of angels vs demons, and I can understand that you need to set up the story and the characters that are going to be involved but this writing was just all over the place. You start here, jump over here with no warning...several times I had to turn back pages to see if I missed something. I had high hopes for this one but was severely let down. Life's too short to deal with uninteresting stories.

Facinating story of good versus evil, watchers and keepers (who protects humanity and protects and guides souls of the dead to home.) There are Archangels who protect and guide the keepers. There are the Fallen (angels who left heaven and became evil) and plenty of demons. The story pretty much grips you in from the beginning until the end. Has suspense, danger and a little romance. I hope there will be a sequel!

Fight against good and evil once more

The book was OK, needs to be checked on errors again though. All in all a solid story but some things were too far reached and again others were like it was assumed the reader would know what was happening. But still a solid story

When Elina was twelve she lost everything-but gained a lot.
Her family was murdered, but she found that she is special-she is a Keeper, protector of the Watchers, protector of the world. Her job is to battle the demons trying to take over our world and to reunite her people. But with the half-angel demon Raphaim determined to destroy her and a new threat emerging, she is in a race against time.
Malach is the Archangel who is to guide, train, and teach Elina. He knows how important she is, but when they first meet she is so broken she can't trust anyone-not even herself. Finding the balance between healing her and training her was tricky, but he did it. Now he just has to hope that she has learned enough, because the new threat is from the heavens and he is powerless to stop it.

The Angel's Covenant is a brilliant piece of writing. Lynn Landes brings her style and twist to the good vs evil/ heaven vs hell story.
Landes writes with a true passion and you see it on every page. She has a very straightforward style and doesn't mince words, but that doesn't mean that anything is lacking. You are right in the middle of everything and you can see it all clearly, but nothing is overdone.
The characters are fully developed, human, and relatable. They are what takes the story to the next level. You believe in them from the beginning, and as you go on the journey with them you are kept on the edge of your seat.
This is a page turner that will leave you reeling. You are sucked into the story from the beginning. It grabs you and doesn't let you go. There may be some punctuation errors that were missed during editing but I can promise that doesn't distract from the greatness that is The Angel's Covenant. This is a series I will continue with. If this is any indication, we are in for one heck of a ride!!

The book was hard to follow at times. It had a good story line, but I struggled getting past some of the biblically forbidden things the characters were doing. I'm sure it's just me, will consider reading the subsequent books.

For the most part, this was a good story, with great descriptions and a plot, if not original, sat well within the fantasy genre.

A tale of good against evil, I did think more work on the development of characters and their strengths and weaknesses would have tightened the plot and given it more credibility.

Worth a look; to witness difficult choices that are carved from disaster and sorrow and end up...

This is the beginning of Elina's journey

This is the beginning of Elina's journey as a Keeper. We follow her through tragedy and watch her grow and take on responsibilities. The story is very interesting and I can't wait to read the sequels.

While this story had a lot of interesting components, there was just too much going on, and it was hard for me to focus.

The angels covenant

I really enjoyed this book. The characters are relatable and loved getting to know them. The demons are frighteningly real.

A little confusing trying to keep all the characters straight, but very action packed and full of exciting events. Worth reading.
