Book Info: Genre: Urban Fantasy (Fairly dark)
Reading Level: Adult
Recommended for: fans of darker urban fantasy, the first book
Trigger Warnings: rape of young girls, threats of rape, killing, murder

My Thoughts: A year has passed since the events of the first book, when things go crazy for Nick again. When a young man dies in Nick's shop, and Nick suspects he is Amish, Nick and Vivian travel to the nearest Amish community—Zion—and search for answers. What they find... is way more than they expected.
I realized then that my life had reached a new low. The Devil was sitting with me in a haunted grove, and I was sighing with relief, thankful that it wasn't something really scary.
The cool thing about the Devil in these books is that he is really quite charming. Nick is also quite charming, and is just a person most of the time. There are some interesting theological thoughts in this book, such as the idea that Yahweh defeated all the Old Ones and took over Earth from them, and redecorated, basically, and also the idea that the Devil was made exactly the way he was supposed to, to serve a vital function.

I love the character development in these books. While they are all in first person, Nick is a trained observer, and he notices things about the other characters that allow us a glimpse into their lives. I just loved several of the Amish characters. This is not a typical Amish community, by the way; the Ordnung has some rather shocking differences from a normal community of the Plain Folk.

I really like this series. I also hope desperately that there will be more books, since there are a couple threads that still need to be tied up. There is no word as to if or when there will be more books, but I'll be watching. I really like this author's style, and she has several other books out, so I plan to go through and add more of her stuff to my collection. If you like darker urban fantasy with some fascinating theological ideas, then definitely check these books out.

Synopsis: “You want to know something about me? Something important? When I was a kid, I used to read a lot of comics. I watched all the TV shows. Hell, I wanted to be a superhero. Then one day I grew up, and I learned I wasn’t the Lone Ranger. I’m not Spider-Man or Captain-Fucking-Marvel. I’m not a good man, and I never will be. My name is Nicholas Englebrecht and I’m the heir to hell. I’m the Angel-breaker. I’m the goddamn son of the fucking devil and you should know that if you piss me off, things are going to go very bad for you…

Nick’s tumultuous relationship with Vivian continues, much to Morgana’s disapproval – and seems to be getting serious. Especially after a mysterious, magical death in Nick’s arms leads him to investigate and gives Vivian the chance to have an almost-honeymoon for them.

But Nick doesn’t have much time for relaxing or partying when he follows the investigation – finding a vulnerable Amish community suffering a truly horrific predation at the hands of a terrible and powerful force. So desperate are they that they’re willing to accept help from him, Nick Englebert, Lucifer’s son and the next Lucifer.

As he investigates and battles the darkness, his own power flows; his father making frequent appearances to urge him towards ascension and one day stepping into his shoes.

I said before that this series is original and that is really well continued into this book. The nature of demons, the retiring Lucifer, exactly who and what Nick is coupled with the old gods, angel eaters, angry angels and an empty Throne all combine to create a really fascinating world with multiple angles and agendas. The idea of humans that ascend to become demons, Lucifer poking his son to do just that, is an excellently maintained one – especially with the very nature of Nick being developed so much more: what it means when people stick holy symbols in their faces and start chanting exorcisms, or their magic improving if people worshipping them – or Nick performing exorcisms simply by demanding demons leave because he’s the boss.

I love the idea of Angels being more than a little lost and aggressive with an empty throne – and I love that there’s been some real research into the nature of angels and not just presented as people with wings (which, if you read the original sources, is pretty divorced from the weird, wonderful and outright alien descriptions of many angels).

The angel eaters – those who eat angelic flesh and seek ascension to the empty throne are also a really good concept. I am torn as to whether they were necessary in this book, we had them in the last book and it was almost a distraction – but I think they maintain the ongoing meta as well as underscoring that just because there’s one thing going on in the world doesn’t mean there aren’t other things going on as well. I like the idea that the world doesn’t neatly line up one problem at a time or that everything else stops while you juggle something else.

I keep rambling on about the world – in fact if this review is disjointed it’s because every time I start writing I leap back up to the world building part to add another element that really appealed to me. But the story is really strong as well- we have Lucifer constantly poking his head in to try and get Nick to follow in his footsteps while Nick is moved to help an Amish community bedevilled by, well, deviltry, out of sheer compassion (I like that the demon is moved by compassion). Of course, when examining that evil we have twist after twist after twist, we have big guns that don’t work as well as expected, cocky demons learning that they’re not all that and the last people we expected turning out to be the big bad, interwoven with Nick’s complicated relationship with Vivian and the other people he invites to his bed.

It’s well written – with a much tighter and more succinct writing style than the first book. The ultra-dark film noir theme has gone, which means it doesn’t clash with Nick’s character any more – his personality now meshes with the books style rather than breaking it. We have a much better marriage of fun and darkness in the book and the story flows faster and easier because of it.

The portrayal of the Amish was interesting and nuanced. There was both a good sense of their values without the almost exotifying element I often find – a presentation of them without the sense of pointing at the strange circus act. Their strengths and positives are clearly laid out – but nor does it flinch away from the prejudices levelled at, for example, gay people in Amish communities and how difficult it is to leave and just “join the English” when you have so little money or advanced education.

Still don't like the girlfriend, and was really hoping something would take her out. Loved the rest of the book though, and really like Nick. Of course, I just adore Nick's Dad :)

another enjoyable book. Although these books work well as a single story I'd be happy for another book in the series to be written. Interesting characters who keep growing.

Angels... angels of light, angels of darkness, messengers of God or fallen angels. You know the old stories about the good and evil, about those who lead you on the right path and about those who lead you into temptation. But the author K.H. Koehler in her two novels of Nick Englebrecht series proposes us a little imagination exercise (let’s say it’s a fun and novel one) in which we change a bit the sides and see the story from another point of view.

With these two fantasy stories she flips at 180 degrees the biblical concepts that we all know about Heaven and Hell, and the characters that we usually know as positive become negative and vice versa or at least factions of them. Don't freak out, there is nothing religious. The stories will have some mystery, detective, fantasy accents and a touch of horror, and the cop role or rather the private eye will be ... who do you think? The future Prince of Darkness himself. Nick Englebrecht is really the son of the Dark one, half human - half demon, but all he wants is to live a normal life after what he saw and suffered in his career as a cop. Which is not really possible, because his father has, as you know, the tendency to stick his tail into everything. Not to make his son's life a hell (ironic, right?), but because it is in his nature and also to protect his hereditary investment.

What changes his son's life in the first novel, The Devil You Know, is, any man should know what I mean, the eternal feminine. And when the eternal feminine appears as a demon hungry for sex, hang on, it will not just be sparks, but the flames of hell will burn at full capacity. Demonic love, what can we say!

But the main problem of the story will not be the love or rather the wild sex, but that, up in the penthouse of light, everything went haywire, and the hunting season for demons and other creatures like them opened. Permanently. Why? You will find that for yourselves. And for everything to take a damn turn (this time Nick's father has nothing to do with it), the disappearance of a little girl and the emergence of an occult group will not give any chance to the heir of the throne of Hell to live the quiet life he dreams about. Nick seems to be lucky in his sexual life, but with the life in general it is not really sure he will get through. The hunt began, the mystery deepens, fortuitous alliances arise, and his fate seems fucked up. Rough! Read the first novel and find out how the devil saved his ass, and also the natural order of things on Earth, in Heaven and in the well heated “basement” of his father's.

In the second novel, The Devil Dances, you will find out that Nick, instead to mind his own life and his loves (yes, plural), he sticks his little tail into other people's business. Not in the sense in which his daddy does, but as a knight in a shinning armor on a white horse way. The Devil as a Hero? Apparently so. The heroism comes with a great cost and that cost could be not only his own life, but the life of the loved ones. But what can be done? Everything comes with a price. And when the opponent is in a different league even for Daddy, what chance would have Daddy’s boy? Will escape the heir of Hell from this confrontation too or his place will become vacant? Even for a demon who is the Prince of Darkness, this test will be one of hell.

Two novels, two stories that will intrigue you, that will make you to be on the side of the Dark one (even if he sees himself more human than he really is), full of action, humor, and sex, sex that Nick plays for both teams. A new approach of the idea about angels, fallen or not, that will make you read with pleasure K.H. Koehler’s books. That is if you are an adult and you have an open mind.

Warning. An adult read. Explicit same sex and multiple partners.

The story of Nick picks up about a year later.

His partner, Morgana, don’t like him training Vivian ( Viv) but if he doesn’t she could do serious damage to herself and others.

And Nick still hasn’t revealed his secret, for his own good.

When a young man dies right in front of him, Nick is drawn into the investigation. Viv won’t let him go without her so the Amish town the victim is from is going to be in for a shock.

Something evil is haunting the outskirts of the their town. affecting the Amish townsfolk. They actually turn to Nick for assistance. Knowing what he is, this shows how bad things are and how desperate they’ve become.

I bet Nick never would have believed it if he’d been told he was going to be asked to help the Amish fight an ancient God.

Nick is deliciously wicked and charming. You get to know more about him in this second book. Since the author already laid out the introductions in the first book, you get more about the characters. Viv, I don’t like so much. She comes across as needy and spoiled, but she does have her moments. And the romance between her and Nick is really heating up. As if it could get much hotter.

Nick is changing, in a big way. He’s still not ready to ascend to the throne yet. And Dad is still tired of waiting. As in the first book, my favorite part is scenes between father and son, and you get a lot more of Satan in this second book. Soon enough, the ascension will be out of Nick’s hands. Thy will be done.

This second book feels less noirish and more like a sexually charged horror story. The sex is harsh and there’s more of it, but that makes sense to me. Nick isn’t a good guy. He has good intentions at times, but he’s soon to be the Devil and his needs and desires run sinfully raunchy. He’s not a one woman or one gender type of guy.

Having the Amish recognize what he is and enlist his aid was genius. I could tell the author did her research and understood the good and bad practices of the Amish people, which was how she wove this together and made it believable and horrific.

I liked this even more than the first book as the world building was already done and the author could focus heavily on the characters and the mystery. I hope there’s more to come.

I received this book for my honest review.

I understand now why people keep comparing these books to 50 Shades of Gray. O.O I have never read 50 Shades, but from my understanding, it is chalk full of kink. Well.. this book definitely had that. More so than book one. But *shrug* it is a book about the devil. You expect there to be some sinning in there. And the book takes place a year after the initial book, so I guess their tastes have progressed by then. *wink*

While the book undertook a new supernatural mystery along similar lines as the first book, the characters themselves are put through the ringer. It was interesting to see them challenged a tad bit and watch them try to evolve as characters.

Nick was still sarcastic, though not nearly on the same scale as book one. This book had a more serious tone to it.

The writing style was still very fluid and the supernatural elements were very cool. I could tell a lot of thought had gone into the story and the nerd in me was eating up the random lessons in theology and the like. It was very entertaining.

I don't know if two books is it, or if there will be another book. I mean, either way, the ending seemed sort of final to me, so I can accept it. (: A very memorable ending that will stick with me- I have great respect for memorable endings.

I still wanted to get into Vivian's head a little more, but that is just a personal preference and I will have to get over it. I must say I liked her better in the second half of the book than the first half, however. She has grown on me and I will miss her random mini adventures with Nick. Well. If they are over. *frowns while re- reading last few pages* I.. I can't tell. I think some things are unresolved.. *glares* I am so confused right now.

3.7/5 (4)
I would definitely recommend to certain friends- not everyone. I mean, this isn't a series I will be recommending to my mom. But some of my friends? Definitely. So if you love snark, demons, mysteries and history/ theology tempered with some kinky sex, then I would definitely recommend this series to you. In any case, I am going to make Tiffany read it.

Review: This is the second novel in the series, showcasing our anti-hero, Nick, the son of Satan. The cover art has this colorful comic vibe to it. I really think this is a great cover. Will draw in a wide variety of readers.

Basically without giving the novel away, Nick heads out to Amish country with his GF, Vivian, whom is also a daemon. From their they tussle with locals and an ancient god. Not to mention a host of angels. I frickin’ loved this novel. It was funny, witty, had a great story-line and fantastic character development. Even the minor bit players were very well developed.

There were some minor points where the novel fell down. Like, how does Nick go from super bad-ass one moment, to getting the crap beat out of him by a farm-hand, then back to destroying Angels, then getting his ass handed to him by a Satyr. Just a bit inconsistent for the Prince of Lies. The hetero sex while evident was not really well developed, unlike Nick’s gay interactions. The author placed WAY too much focus on the homo-erotic, IMHO.

The ending sets up an epic finale, where may haps ( and I ‘am guessing) Nick gets his well deserved picket fence.
GET THIS NOVEL! You will enjoy yourself for hours.

Picking up a year later from the first book, this book is just as action packed, witty, and a fun read. I know...mystery, deaths, etc., and I call it fun, but that's what it is! Vivian and Nick are getting more serious, much to Morgana's dismay, and Nick's dad visits much more often in this book. I know I said it last time, but it's just true...the Devil is so charismatic and so is Nick. He's so likable!

Nick, accompanied by his girlfriend Vivian, is lured to Amish country to investigate a magical death in the community. With angels and demons after him, his dad encouraging him towards ascension, angels lost without someone on the Throne, and those angel eaters (angels as food really threw me in the first book; fascinating idea), Nick is soon hip deep in a river of multiple agendas, danger, and muck.

Nick is wonderfully observant (I can hear you saying, "Duh, he's a detective" but I'm stating it anyway!) of people and their nuances and from his observations is how we get a lot of the character building. It's such a fantastic way to get to the heart of each character and really well done.

This was a satisfying, fast-paced, action-packed book and I desperately hope for more in the series. There are threads to tie up and I just really like the characters! They are well developed as are the ideas about Hell, Heaven, angels, demons, and the Devil. Thoroughly enjoyed this second book and I think you will, too!

Again, many thanks to the publisher for my complimentary copy. I loved it!

Again Nick is awesome! I had no clue what the title of this novel meant until the scene where Nick dances against his own wishes! It was hilarious :) I laughed at this novel, but it also was intense and heartbreaking at the same time. I loved how the author brought the Amish community into this paranormal world - it is something you don't see happen often! I still love how Nick is trying to keep his humanity intact and not Ascend as his father wishes him to do. In this novel we find out a lot more about the relationship between Nick and the devil (his father). And we also find some startling revelations that are extremely unexpected! Watching Nick struggle to grasp onto the threads of his relationship with Vivian is difficult to read because by now the reader knows just how much in love they really are. And the reader finds that the love is tested by the events in the book and it was very difficult for me to read. I was very moved by the ending of this book and can't wait to read the next installment to find out what happens next for Nick and Vivian!

**I was given a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review**

I don't actually remember getting the first book of this series. It might have been on special offer. I just found it on my Kindle after a few months away from novels for study. Curious, I started to read...
...and I just didn't stop!
I was hooked. The stories are intricate, well researched, and flow beautifully. The characters are portrayed with depth and understanding, and the stories just roll along, pulling you with them.
This second in the series is a great tale. I genuinely came close to shedding a tear at the end because I'd become so embroiled in events. Poor Nick!
It's never going to win a high-brow literary award, but if there were any out there for just brilliant story telling, this would be in with a fine chance.
Can't wait for number 3.

This is the second book in the Nick Englebrecht series. I enjoyed this one even more than the first. Nick, former cop and son of Lucifer, and his girlfriend Vivian are in Amish country investigating the death of an Amish boy and are called into a local Amish colony to help them find what is affecting the girls of the colony. Full of action, we meet all sorts of supernatural beings, from Angels and Demons to old world Gods. This is a must read for fans of Paranormal Suspense/Detective novels!

This is the second installment of the series, and it did not disappoint. It was action packed, fast reading. I was surprised I was at the end already. Some things were revealed which left me wondering, where does it go from here. Wherever it does, I am sure it will be a fun read. If you like paranormal detective/suspense then these are the books for you!
