Waverly Bryson #4

Chocolate for Two

Rate this book
Waverly Bryson’s life is officially perfect: She’s engaged to her gorgeous boyfriend, Jake; her Honey on Your Mind TV segment is more popular than ever; and Waverly’s Honey Shop is growing by leaps and bounds. What could possibly go wrong? For starters…everything.

This is Waverly, after all, and drama follows her wherever she goes. Why should her trip down the aisle be any different? Now, before she can marry the man of her dreams, she’ll have to go head-to-head with his high-society mother, whose vision for their wedding isn’t exactly meshing with Waverly’s. Adding to the chaos is the impending departure of Paige, Waverly’s very pregnant retail partner; the arrival of her suddenly secretive best friend, Andie; and the meddling of a new TV producer who’s promising to “shake things up.” Suddenly Waverly’s perfect life feels like it’s about to come crashing down…unless the irrepressible Miss Bryson can prove to the world—and to herself—that she really can have it all.

The way Maria became an author is a little crazy. She used to work in high-tech PR but hated it, so one day she quit and ended up playing semi-pro soccer in Argentina for a year. While she was down there she decided to write a novel, which was something she'd always dreamed of doing. Fast forward a few years and she's now the best-selling author of Perfect on Paper, It's a Waverly Life, Honey on Your Mind, Chocolate for Two, Cassidy Lane, Katwalk, Wait for the Rain, and Bridges. And yes, she still plays a lot of soccer!

*Oh Waverly*

**3.5 Stars**

This final instalment sees Waverly as chaotic as ever. I liked the other 3 books more, this one was almost like Waverly has taken a step backwards. She has always been a people pleaser to a certain extent and often getting herself into mad situations. But her one special day that is coming up is about to be railroaded by her frosty mother in law to be.

Waverly is virtually bent over without a spine trying to be liked and hating herself in the process.

Does she redeem herself in the end?

I read and listened to this one and Julia Whelan does a great job, I recommend the audio

This is the fourth novel to feature Waverly Bryson and friends. It's been quite wonderful to watch Maria Murnane grow as a writer.

Life is pretty great for Waverly right now: she's engaged to Jake, her Honey business is going very well, and her stint on a syndicated talk show has garnered her lots of attention. People relate to Waverly - both characters in the book and the reader as well.

Jake's mother is, well, she is something that rhymes with witch. She knows that her behavior is cold enough to freeze alcohol, but she seems to feel it's her right as the mother of the groom. Waverly, whose mother is deceased, isn't quite sure how to handle Mrs. McIntyre and thus allows herself to be railroaded in all decisions.

Waverly is also facing an increased workload at her TV job. In addition, her friend, Paige, who also runs the Honey product distribution side of things, is pregnant and due to go on maternity leave. Throw in a wedding and an beyond overbearing future mother-in-law and you can feel Waverly's stress come right of of the page.

Waverly, Jake, and the rest of the cast of characters are genuinely likable. My one complaint is that Waverly "ums" her way through so many conversations with her future MIL that you want to smack her and tell her to grow a spine. It's annoying when people do that in real life and it's annoying in a book as well.

Overall, it's a fun read. I do wish that there had been more of a storyline - maybe less locations, less characters and more substance.

Recommend for fans of the series.

For some reason, Chocolate for Two just fell short for me in comparison to the other Waverly books. It wasn't that the book was bad, it just was eh to me. The other books were great and really had humor in them because that is Waverly's personality. Granted in this one Waverly was supposed to have been more grown-up and comfortable in her own skin, it didn't feel that way the whole entire book. Any decisions when it came to her wedding details were made by Ava, her mother-in-law. She never even really does stand up to her. In fact, Maria Murnane doesn't even have anything in the book written about how Waverly finally stands up to her mother-in-law to get her small wedding and have the big wedding that she wants. You just jump to a chapter where she automatically has made all these big decisions regarding the Honey Shop and her wedding, and she is getting married in a small ceremony in the spot in Central Park where Jake had asked her to marry him. If anything, the book just reflected how much Jake grounded Waverly, which is great. It didn't appear to me that she had become a real grown-up. Though the lack of Waverly's humor in the scenarios she gets herself into or with her Honey line, the book was still good. It just fell short of all the other Waverly books which is disappointing since it was the last in the line of books. My honest opinion is that it just felt like Maria Murnane was just trying to get the book out to her readers but didn't give us her true talent in the closing of the Waverly series.

Waverly can be annoying. She says stupid things and does stupid things and she really can't connect the dots in basic situations. But I liked this book because I like her protected bubble of a world. If life really worked this way, we'd all be blissfully ignorant like her.

Alrighty...I don't really know where to start with this review. I gave this book 2 stars and I'm not even sure it deserved that.

This is the 4th book in the Waverly Series. I've read them all and absolutely loved them! So naturally, it was a HUGE disappointment when I read this book and didn't like it.

I did think Waverly FINALLY grew up a teeny tiny little bit, but what she gained in growing up a little she lacked in getting a spine. She has NO SPINE. It's seriously beyond annoying. For an almost 32 year old, every other sentence had the word "um" in it. I cannot tell you how many times I wanted to smack some spine into her, and throw my kindle across the room at the same time! One person can only read "um" so many times before its just makes my eyes wanna bleed.

There wasn't really a plot to this book. I thought the secondary characters in this book really didn't add anything. They were kinda just there to add a little somethin more to the story. Jake is the same amazing guy in this one, but he's a little too perfect to be realistic.

Now onto Jakes mother. She was horrible. And obviously this is the main focus of the story. Jakes mom take over everything in Waverly's life, and Waverly let's her- hence the no spine thing.

I just didn't understand this story. As much as I loved Waverly in the first 3, she irritated the shit outta me in this book. Something else that bothered me was that she answered everything as a question. Example: Waverly is at her best friends apartment building's front desk asking to go up. "I'm here to see Andie Barnett?". That's not a question.. Are you not there to see Andy???!!! Like wtf! Grow up! Ughh So irritating! While I'm ranting about things I didn't like, I have one more: repeating everything someone says after they say it. I'm going to put in a passage from the book to show you what I mean:

"So, um, what did you want to see me about?"

"Honey on your mind tested well. It was very strong."

"It was strong?"

"They liked your segment too"

"They liked my segment too?"

"They related to it"

"They related to it?"

"They do."

"They do?"

Come ON! I read some reviews where they said Waverly had grown up. Were you and I reading the same book? Between all the "um's" repeating everything someone says after they say it, having NO spine, and constant speaking like your always asking a question even though its not a question is not "growing up". It's beyond annoying.

I wish I could have liked this one. I REALLY wanted to like it. But I found myself more frustrated and annoyed more than anything. I realize this is my opinion and not everyone will agree, so, if you liked the others in the series, you may very well like it! You'll have to read it and see for yourself!

This is the fourth book in the "Waverly" series .... I absolutely loved it.. I loved the entire series actually! I enjoy Maria Murnane's writing so much.. she is truly an excellent author! The main character Waverly is just.. lovable, funny, sweet.. each book in the series, had me LOL.. I think many women can relate to her, or know a friend that can! She is just a riot... for an enjoyable read, but not your usual "Chick Lit", do yourself a favor and read these books!

I would love to know this series will continue... but I don't know.. I can hope tough! :)

A huge THANK YOU to Maria Murnane!!!

Once again, I fell in love with one of Waverly’s tales and Chocolate for Two was a wonderful conclusion to this series. It was fast-paced, funny, frustrating, and fabulous all at once! These have become my go-to novels when I am in the mood for something smart but funny, so now I must find my new happy place among new characters. However, I have been so impressed and honestly blown away by Maria Murnane’s writing, characterization, dialogue, and mostly – her beautifully crazy and somewhat inappropriate sense of humor! All of the stories about various bodily functions and freak happenings on their dates have made me laugh harder than I ever remember laughing at a book and I loved it.

Maria Murnane is talented, creative, takes risks, and has become one of my absolute favorite authors. I cannot recommend this novel and this series enough!

*Many thanks to Maria Murnane for providing this novel in exchange for an honest review!

Full disclosure: this is book four in a series, I didn't know that. So, I spent most of the book confused. I didn't understand what Waverly 's ( odd name not explained) jobs were, I didn't get her friends and what the connections were. There were two very pregnant women, that felt odd. In addition, there were two male friends that she loved, loved, loved- no idea why. Plus, I had no visual of what she looked like.

There was no real story here and no deep thoughts. I'm so tired of the stuck-up rich Southern mother-in-law-to-be. Not to mention the commitment phobic friend, enough already.

My last rant is the title. It doesn't fit the book. The first time any chocolate is mentioned is late in the book, and it's not a theme. It seems to be referring to a tiny scene at the end, why?

The three stars are for her perfect boyfriend, rush that guy to the altar!

More please

Though it took forever to finally write an appropriate review for this series, and for that Maria, I do apologize.
This series made my heart. Waverly was the best and Waverly and Jake, sounds so much better than Waverly and Aaron(blah).
Now the story is ,hard to believe, older and Dear Maria, if you were to pop out another Waverly story. That would be how a series wraps up.Naturally, another HEA would be perfect,Mackie kids,Andie, omg,a soccer mom and the quirks of Waverly and Jake. What’s new, more Honey?a surprise Honey? A huge Honey Brownstone? Please ,one more for fun!
Thank you,Honey🐝

I loved this series as a whole. I am so glad that I read it. And I am so sad that it is over. But the ending was wonderful and all good and wonderful things must come to end so I'll be glad for the world that Murnane gave me to escape into for a little while. Waverly Bryson and her assembled cast of crazy, smart, sassy and funny friends and family were a joy to read. The friendship between both Waverly and Mackie and Andie was probably my favorite part over all of the series. I was sad to see the Waverly/Mackie scenes get less and less as the books moved on. But, at the same point I understood it. Because as in real life when what you're doing and where you are in your life shifts so does the amount of time you're able to spend and talk to your friends. That doesn't change your friendship at the core though and it was nice to see this message through out the books.

For me the mark of a good book within a series is the ability to read it as a standalone novel, and this definitely happened here. We are given a suitable background of Waverly's life, and this was certainly an easy read.

From infuriating mother in laws to struggling with work, Waverly certainly has a busy life. Her partner Jake is nothing but supportive of her. But my real bug bear is the ending. This book was resolved way too quickly and it genuinely felt like there were chapters missing.

Overall a light, easy read.

I didn't realize this was the fourth book in a series. Perhaps if I'd read the other books before, I'd have appreciated this one more, but as a stand alone novel it didn't do much for me. I never became attached to any of the characters (there wasn't much character development), never got hooked on the plot, and was generally rather bored throughout the book. It wasn't painful, but I'm sure I won't remember it at all in a week.

No Bueno for me. Such a basic story and no real point is there? The characters, even the main one, is it Waverly, is so vapid and vague, I really didn't care after a minute. And who was her finance and where is the character development of ANY of the characters in the book??? Just a boring story. Sorry, or maybe I'm too old for it, but just a snooze.

I love Maria's books. They are quick and fun reads and I love the Waverly character. So happy for her growth and seeing how much better her life gets since the first book! Can't wait to read more books from the author.

I enjoyed the characters and challenges each faced in this book as well as the 2 previous in trilogy. The added humor and female relationships made me long for the time (read during cov19 lockdown) when I can see my girlfriends face to face.

Sweet

Easy to read, simple and straightforward. Waverly is navigating life, and hitting some bumps in the road. It takes a while for her to find her voice, but she gets herself together.

The story was easy to follow. Expected to have more mention about chocolate based on the title. Did not mention chocolate until 3/4 into the book. Also thought the book should have ended after the wedding in Florida.

This fourth adventure of Waverley Bryson was just as fun as the first three. I enjoyed "watching" Waverley grow up through the series. Good series!

There were quite a few surprises through the final book in the series and it kept me very entertained. Wish it didn't have to end, but maybe the story is not over....

I fell in love with Waverly a little more with each book. She is a woman with spunk and sass who doesn’t give up even when things aren’t going her way.
