Spirit Beasts Awakening is an urban fantasy based around certain people having spirit beasts within them. These beasts, once able to be summoned help guide their person and gift them with other abilities as well.
This world Beswick has created was intriguing. It’s always interesting to see how an author of urban fantasy integrates the magic and fantasy elements. The town in Spirit Beasts feels like it’s always been there, the magic woven into their history which I enjoyed. The character interactions feel real to me, the jealousy of a friends success or the awkwardness of a first crush, all things teenagers encounter.
In my opinion the story unfortunately needs a stronger edit. There is a distinct lack of contractions throughout that makes the story read in an odd way. Stilted? Formal? Not 100% sure what the right word is there but it really detracted from the reading experience. It made the dialogue jarring and prevented it from reading like a real conversation. People just don’t talk like that. Many of the chapters also start with a repetitive little summary of the character introspecting what has just happened. The reader knows what just happened in the previous chapter, the summary isn’t needed and slows the pace.
The twists throughout Spirit Beasts are great, especially in the last 20%. I read that part so much faster than the rest of the book. Isn’t that always the way when all the good stuff is coming to a head at the end? The reveal and how everything is set up for the next book was great. I think anyone reading this one is going to want a spirit beast of their own, I know I do. I also kind of want to travel to the spirit realm. Do the spirit beats just run around there like animals in the real world but all magical? I’m interested to see what happens in book two and will be picking it up.
