Second Chances #1

Every Little Piece

Rate this book
**This is a YA/New Adult crossover. A story of love, hope and healing.**

Needing the truth…

I wanted to spend the night before graduation making out with Seth, but one of my best friends had the whole night planned. Lucky for me, we ran into him and his friends playing pool where we made some silly bet over a game, and the losers had to run through town in nothing but their underwear. A year later, I wish more than ever we’d just made out at Raker’s Bluff instead, because maybe the night would’ve turned out differently. Now Seth’s back, the guy who broke my heart, the guy I’m still in love with…I just hope he doesn’t break me all over again.

Desperate for redemption…

No one wants to fess up to having a screwed-up family. When my parents dropped the big divorce bomb on me, I decided to keep it a secret. Just the thought of the pity-stares and pats-on-the-back made me feel sick. I’d tell Haley and my friends another time. Except, I never got the chance. Stuff happened. Stuff that totally sucked and changed our lives forever. Instead of telling my truth, I took the coward’s way out, and I’ve regretted it ever since. But I’m back, determined to tell Haley everything, down to the last gritty detail, if she’ll give me the chance…even if it means losing her forever.

I had a hard time putting this book down, and there were a number of times I teared up because of the emotional roller coaster ride Kate takes on the reader on. And the best part is the book is standalone, so there are no cliffhanger endings. I also loved that the story is told dual povs. Those are my favorite kinds of stories. Kate does a great job with both main characters. You can't help but cheer for them both.

SO many complaints, I'm not sure where to start.

1) Be warned, this book is SUPER short. That means everything happens super fast. In fact, the time span might be over a year, but the actual "screen time" (the time we get to see) is merely a week.

2) Seth is kind of idiotic jerk. First of all, he drives drunk. Not once, either, considering ALL his friends know that's his thing when he's drunk. They try to stop him, but he doesn't. That's, like, the biggest turn off ever. Can't really like him after that. Then, I agree with Noah; Seth's a little piss of sh*t. Instead of running away like that, he should have put his big boy boxers and stayed with his girlfriend to repent. To be there for her. But nope, it's all about him. Urg.

3) They never abhor drunk driving. Hayley forgives Seth. They never talk about the drunk driving shit--no character, even he himself, gernes even a promise of never doing that shit again. He never speaks of his current drinking habits--for all we know, he might still be doing it--it feels like this ginormous part is just swept under the rag. Like it's not really important because it's just there to move on the plot. But you can't throw that sh*t into the story and then not address it properly. It's like you're saying it's okay. IT'S NOT OKAY.

This book was a beautiful tragedy. Everything about it held me completely entranced. I was waiting on pins and needles for the moment we would find out the truth about the horrible tragedy that occurs in the beginning of the book. I want to write so much in this review, but this is one of those books were you can’t write a too in depth review without giving everything away. It was an emotional read that takes you on a journey of forgiveness leading to the path of a forever love.

I want to tell you about this girl who fell into the darkness, but piece by piece she was brought back to a place of healing, forgiveness and most importantly…love.

In the beginning of the book we meet a group of friends about to graduate high school the following day. They had plans to go to a party that night and celebrate with all the seniors of their class. These three girls were more like sisters than friends. They were a trio of fun loving girls on the verge of starting their lives together…until a horrible tragedy left one girl behind grieving for the loss of her best friends and wondering why God couldn’t have taken her instead.
(This is not a Christian Novel)

“I’m sorry, Haley.” His words were soft but pierced through to my heart. “They didn’t make it.”

“Does it ever go away?” I asked. “The pain. The memories.”
“Haley,” his voice cracked, “I wish I had an answer for you. I promise to be there for you as long as it takes. I’ll be your friend.”

But don’t think this book is just a sad story with no happy ending in sight. There was so much more to this book than a story of tragedy. This is also a story about a never ending kind of love that we can only dream of finding. Haley and Seth had been together since middle school and had a relationship built on love, friendship, trust, and the ability to bare their deepest thoughts and feelings to one another. These high school sweet hearts had a relationship that was sweet, innocent, pure and just plain beautiful. They only had one problem…their love was about to face a tragedy so devastating that it ripped them to pieces and they never quite knew how to put it back together.

“We’d been together so many years and had seen the best and worst in each other. Was that love? Was that enough for a life together? I wanted to ask these things. But this was the worst thing ever to ask a guy near graduation. He’d run for the first bus out of town.”

Haley was supposed to have a girl’s night before the party but found a way to involve Seth and his friends. When they finally break apart for a while before the party Seth runs into Carly, a class mate who has made no secret of the fact that she wants Seth, at the beach and is told some devastating news that shocked him and sent him looking for comfort at the bottom of a bottle instead of the arms of his girlfriends and best friend.

“My phone buzzed and I pulled it out. But it wasn’t Haley. It was Carly. I ignored her. I was sure it was about the party later, asking if I was going. She’d been subtly hitting on me for months. Good thing Haley hadn’t noticed, at least I didn’t think she had. I admit. Carly was pretty hot. Curves all in the right places. An intoxicating smell. But my heart knew and only responded to Haley.”

“Carter pulled me aside. “Hey, man. Carly’s been hot for you for years, but you’re not thinking about cheating on Haley, are you?”
“No way.”
I dug my toes into the sand. She stood down at the water, with her back to us, alone. I sighed.
Carter punched me. “You’re not giving in to her games.”
“It’s different this time. I’ll be right back. Don’t lose for us.” Despite my friend’s objections, I headed toward the waves and Carly”

When I look back on this book I realize that this book was about a single devastating tragedy that could have been caused by any number of events prior to the accident. But the real travesty of this story is how guilt and blame tore apart a relationship that was so strong it should have been able to withstand anything.

“I’m so glad you’re okay.” His words stutter out and his voice is breathy like he ran a marathon. “I have to talk to you.” His deep breath rattles in his throat, before he plunges forward. “I’m sorry about last year. I never came to visit you. I was wrong. I was wrong to run away and not talk to you for a year.”

“We wouldn’t have been able to move on without the mystery behind this being wrapped up.”-Kama's mom

“It’s not going to be easy,” he says. “All we have to work through.”
“No, it won’t be,” I murmur. “But we’ll make it.”
“Love you, forever,” he whispers between kisses.
“With every little piece of my heart.”>

Quotes:

“This past year, the ocean has been my solace. A place where I’m accepted with no questions asked."-Haley

“I’m not ready for this,” I croak out.
He kisses the top of my forehead. “I don’t care where I am or what I’m doing. If you ever need a hug you let me know. No questions asked.”

“Your chance is over. We’re done. Your few days are up. Go find someone else to be your little project.”

“That’s fine, then. Go play at your secret little hideaway home by the shore. Just remember you’re not the only one hurting. You’ve shut out your family and your friends. Everyone! Did you ever think we need you too?”-Noah
"I’m sorry, Haley. That was stupid of me.”-Noah
“No!”-Haley
“I’m leaving now. And you’re right. It was stupid of you because my friends are dead.”-Haley

“Thank you. For being my friends. For laughing. For loving me. For always being there. I’m sorry…I’m so sorry. Kama that you’ll never do great things on stage. You would’ve been a star. Brin and I would’ve been there opening night. We would’ve brought you the biggest bouquet of flowers ever made and bragged all over town about you.”-Haley

(Source: I won a digital copy of this book. Thanks to author Kate Ashton.)
18-year-old Haley and her best friends are living it up the night before graduation, when the unthinkable happens, and their lives are changed drastically and irreversibly. Haley and her boyfriend Seth blame themselves, and both retreat into their own little worlds.
When Seth comes back into Haley’s life one year later with a secret to tell her, neither of them are really ready to face what happened that night, until eventually they’re forced to.
What really happened that night? Who was responsible? And will the truth drive an even bigger wedge between Haley and Seth?

This was a brilliant story about love, and grief, and forgiveness, that pummelled my heart, made me cry, and totally left me wanting more.

I loved the characters in this book. Haley was so broken after what happened, and it was so sad that Seth wasn’t there to comfort her when he should have been. I really felt for both of them and the guilt they carried though, and as much as I wanted them to pull through what had happened to them, I really didn’t see how they ever would.

The storyline in this book was emotional and heart-breaking, and even made me cry! I loved how such a relatively simple storyline could hold so much emotion, and feeling, and how one secret could change things so completely. The suspense was gut-wrenching, and I couldn’t help but keep reading, even knowing that what was coming would hurt.
The ending of this story was so fitting, and even made a happy ending out of a terrible situation.
I only give 5 stars to books that I get to the end of and want to start reading again from the beginning, and that’s exactly how I felt here.
Overall; a beautiful and heart-breaking YA contemporary romance. Highly recommended.

I always find with free eBook downloads that they are either really good or really bad. Unfortunately in this case it's really bad - or at least to me it was really bad!

The story was very simple and the characters themselves just didn't hold my attention, I kind of wanted to skip sections just to get back to the good bits and get the story finished (but I was a good girl and read it fully)!

Despite some hard topics involved in the plot I just didn't feel they were very well taken care of. The main girl Haley just seemed very wrapped up in herself and not really listening to the advice of others. Seth - the main guy - didn't seem much better either and very much coming across as selfish.

Could have been dealt with a lot better and develop characters better too.

Not one for me and not a series I will be continuing on with - 2/5.

A sad and emotionally charged YA story. The author writes well and capably presented the heartbreak and hurt, as well as moving the story along for a complete resolve in the end. I had a hard time balancing the situation with the length of time involved in getting to the nitty gritty of the situation. It just seemed unreal the way the matters were handled. I can't really go into it without giving away the plot. Suffice it to say that I found some of the storyline hard to grasp. All in all, I'm glad I read this story and most likely will continue with the next book in this series.

Im giving this book 5 stars i couldnt put it down. I loved how the book was written from both MFC and MMC views.

The pain in this book was raw pain and hurt and not wanting to forgive as they felt they shouldnt be forgiven and they shouldnt have a life. But the truth is wot set them free from the pain and hurt.

Every Little Piece was definitely a story that pulled at the heartstrings. It was a really intense and deep story. I really liked this book but it was a little depressing, not that it is a bad thing, but it just got me down a little.

Haley went through some serious loss and tragedy in such a short time and at such a young age. I don't know how I would have handled a similar situation at her age. I think that she thought leaving was the only way to forget but she felt so guilty that she never let herself forget or move on. She became a shell of herself and no amount of distance would have changed that. Instead of avoiding and wallowing, she needed to confront the situation and forgive herself.

Seth played a huge role in Haley's downfall and he took the coward's way out. He abandoned her when she needed him the most. I understand that he was young and had been through a huge tragedy and he thought leaving was the best solution. However, if he had stayed, he could have helped Haley move on. His year away did give him perspective and he came back to right his wrongs and help Haley to get past some of her grief and guilt.

This book was well written, especially from a debut author, and the plot was well thought out and well rounded. I liked that the author really built up the characters and the plot before tragedy struck. It made the tragedy that much more heart-breaking. She also touched on the subject of grief and guilt very well and very realistically.

Seth and Haley are high school lovers. They're one day away from their graduation. The night before their group of friends decide to celebrate before their big day so they can have the beautiful last memories. Only, a tragedy just wait around the corner.

Every Little Piece was a very emotional book due to the horrible tragedy that happened. Infelt really sorry and sad for all characters involved in it or affected by it. Because I don't know how anyone would recover from that..

I also liked all the characters. Kate Ashton wrote their grief in a way that tugs at your heartstrings. Seth and Haley in particular were completely different people from when the novel started.

Even though the book was very predictable toward the end, I was just happy with the way it ended. . Really loved that.

You would not want to read this if you want a feel-good book but it's a very good story that deals with loss and grief very intensely.

A great read, I really enjoyed it!

This book is about tragedy and romance and deals with death and its aftermath. You can see the love between Haley and Seth but the thought he might have contributed to the tragedy tears them apart.

I like that it is told from the point of view of each of the main characters, it gives you different views of the story from their perspective.

This book definitely takes you on an emotional roller coaster and the storyline is great as it will pull you in from the very beginning.

I was glad to see that this book is a standalone, so there are no cliffhanger endings!

One day I hope to read some NA that isn't an angsty mess.

2.5 stars

***Mild spoilers Ahead***

Every Little Piece was a fail for me. The storyline was the main issue. It's not that I object to people who make mistakes forgiving themselves. It's that where the ultimate blame lies for the defining moment - death by drink driving of two characters - isn't important. It's that both of the people who believed they were to blame could have been. One was very drunk. The other had had a drink, was very emotional and behaving erratically. Both chose to get behind the wheel. One, in fact, chose to drive recklessly AGAIN during a guilt-fuelled semi-suicidal episode. All three incidents caused accidents. They could have brought about the deaths. They could, indeed, have killed others. And all we get for a conclusion is a little feel good resolution. There's no sense of anyone taking responsibility for their actions.

The formatting for Kobo was a mess and made reading across devices problematic. Editing is also needed to fix some clunky passages. I do want to commend the author for one thing though: her portrayal of emotion is very good.

The amount of feels in this book should be illegal. Seriously, I have never felt so many emotions all at once. It's one of those books that should be sold with a box of tissues, hot chocolate, and a bottle of wine. But even though the author got me to cry, which I hardly ever do while reading, I really enjoyed this book.

Right off the bat I loved the characters. They're extremely relatable. Reading about Haley's interactions with her friends brought back memories of my friends. I felt like I was part of their group experiencing their last night before graduation too. Seth is adorable, although he does get a bit emo towards the middle of the book, but regardless I fell head over heels for this character. I enjoyed the dual POV between Haley and Seth as well. It let us get into their minds and see both sides of the story. Had we not seen Seth's POV I probably wouldn't have liked him as much.

This was New Adult at it's finest. New Adult books are often labeled "issue" books. And while there is a ginormous "issue" in this book it didn't feel like the tragedy was being pushed on the reader. It was what drove the plot, but this story was more about character development and how the tragedy affected their lives. It's a coming of age story and learning who you are and how to deal with life. Any book that can get you to think deeply and ultimately teaches you a lesson is one worth reading. In a way, it reminded me of a mixture of Leaving Paradise by Simone Elkeles and any Sarah Dessen book.

I only have one complaint and I can't say much without being spoilery. There were a few unrealistic things that happened. I think in real life the big secret would have come out the day the tragedy happened. I was confused why Seth's parents weren't asking him questions about the night. I was confused why the police weren't investigating things right after everything happened. I wondered why all the characters seemed to conveniently keep their car keys in their cars and the doors unlocked. But while these things bothered me, they didn't really change my overall reading experience. I realize it's a book and if any of those things had happened differently the plot wouldn't have moved forward at all.

Should you read this? YES! You're in for a roller coaster of emotions that will leave you smiling through the tears at the end. I read this book in two days and wish I had savored it more. Here's an excerpt from a book blitz I took part in if you want a sample.

I was lucky enough to be a critique partner for Kate and read this book in it's first drafts and then later in the finished draft.

The book begins with the night before graduation. It seems like just another exciting time in these characters lives. As Haley and Seth go through their nightly routines, hanging out with their friends, their banter; I felt their joy and their excitement and apprehension for what the future held.

Then a tragic twists of events, leads both Seth and Haley to run from their problems. And God was I crying when I read it. I felt every little piece of me tear away as I didn't want this couple to tear apart and the things that happened to them broke my heart.

Next, we get to see where they are a year later. How their lives are filled with grief from that night before graduation. I wanted to reach out and comfort these characters because their emotions are so real.

The ending is satisfying with no questions left unanswered and refreshing in a world of cliff hangers. I've never read a book that expresses grief as well as Kate does and she does it very well.

Highly recommended for people looking for something different than the typical New Adult love story and maybe someone who has a box of tissues handy.

WOW!! I wish I could give this book 10 stars!! I won a copy of "Every Little Piece" from a giveaway and I was so excited to read it! I was hooked on this book from the first page! Kate Ashton has such a way with words! I felt as if I was her characters! I felt all of the love, laughs, heartache and tears as if they were my own! The ups and major downs in this book had me on the edge of my seat throughout the entire book! I wanted to jump in the book at times and just hold on to Haley and Seth and help them through their hard times! You could feel the love between the characters and the pain that they went through at times. There was a couple of times in the book that I cried and others that I wanted to yell at the characters. This is a beautiful story about love, loss and life. Haley is a strong young woman who has to learn some life lessons the very hard way, but she becomes stronger because of that. Seth is a fun, compassionate guy who makes a couple of bad decisions in life and has to find a way to set them right! The plot of Kate's book will have you hooked and leave you wanting more from her characters! Thank you Kate, for such an amazing book! I look forward to reading more of your work in the future!

This is one of the oldest books still on my Kindle - from 2017 - so it's about time I read it.

It starts with Haley and her friends meeting up to decide what to do the day before graduation. They play pool and meet up with her boyfriend, Seth, and his friends for a few games before heading home to get ready for the big party that's happening. Things don't go well at the party, though, and when Seth disappears Haley and her friends search for him only to end up in a car accident. Fast forward a year and both Haley and Seth find themselves in the same place at the same time and Seth decides to try and make amends for what happened.

I'll admit I wasn't entirely into this. The characters were rather immature at times and how they acted really began to put me off the story. I didn't really gel with the romance or the storyline but I was intrigued about who was behind the accident so I continued to read.

This is a story of love, friendship, forgiveness and second chances. It just didn't work for me.

The book had a strong beginning but then it just lost my interest and that is really hard for a book to do, but I had to force myself to finish reading. As I said the beginning was strong and I was getting into it, and then BOOM went downhill. Seth he's a total guy, "I shoved my phone in my back pocket. Again she chose Brin and Kama. I got it. The whole girl thing. But what about the whole boyfriend thin? Was this her way of telling me that we were a high school fling?" I loved how much chemistry Seth and Hadley had when together:
He pushed me up against the bar. His hands reached down and squeezed my butt. He pressed his hips into mine.
I pushed him away. "Seth!"
"Sorry, babe." He winked. "You're just too hot."

I read this book in one sitting. Kate Ashton draws me in with her writing. I loved the characters and the storyline.

Haley and Seth had been dating since middle school. One the night before graduation, Haley, Seth, and their friends are all having a good time at a party. There was irresponsible choices taken that led to the death of two friends. Seth feels guilty and draws into himself making Haley feel alone. Haley had to get away so when the opportunity comes that she can move, but not too far away, she jumps on it.

Haley only thinks that she's over everything until Seth walks into the diner a year later. Hearts are shattered, pain resurfaces and it's up to Haley and Seth to wade through all the emotions that happened a year ago so they can move forward.

Kate Ashton does a great job in this book of portraying a tragic accident and how the aftermath made such an impact on everyone's lives. Seth ran and so did Haley and they found themselves apart and in different places. It was a little too YA for me and I was frustrated with Haley's lack of coping and dealing and was confused why her parents didn't tell her the truth of what happened. Overall an okay read.

This is the story of Haley and Seth, a couple that’s dated since Middle School. Moments of their happiness has been documented on the “Great Wall of Haley.” Both want forever from the other, but neither is willing to admit it, their minds inflating with doubt and fear.

Grad night is supposed to be a night of unforgettable fun and lasting memories. Well, it’s definitely unforgettable alright. Tragedy strikes that night that will change their lives forever.

From then on, Haley and Seth drift apart, but their love for each other remains in their hearts.

A love story of 2nd chances. Will their love survive the pain and sadness of the past?

I thought the story was good and clean (no sex.) It’s definitely recommended for YA audiences, but there was too much emotion and sadness.

Man was this book hard to get into. I had to force myself to get through it. I only started getting into it the last few chapters and I think that's because my ex died young and left young children behind that it hit me at that point. Not enough development in the characters because I just couldn't get to the point where I cared at all about them. The part prior to the accident was boring as all get out but I can't not read a book once I've started so I skimmed the heck out of this one until the last few chapters when some of it started hitting home. Now that I kind of know the characters from the 1st book I MIGHT read a subsequent book but that's a huge might.

Surprised me

I was prepared for some fluff, normal New Adult drama... but there was so much more to this. Yes there was drama, but there was grief and heartache and loss and so many feels.
Mistakes were made. And the characters could be judged, but they are kids and they messed up. Emotions were high. Thought was not logical. And they paid for it. And didn’t deserve the penance either one was serving.
I was surprised just how much I loved this book and the characters and the depth.

Such a sad tale

I didn't think you could write an entire book on misery, but you can, just as this one is. A tragic accident that leaves two people full of guilt and utter misery. But the bond between them is too strong to let go, even if it would probably eventually kill them. Luckily in the end it all comes right. It dropped to 4 stars because it could have been done with about a third of the book being scrapped as it hashed over enough misery to sink a ship.

I got super sucked in, it honestly destroyed my feels. I only have two complaints:
1. Didn't address drinking and driving. By not addressing it, the book treated it like it was okay.
2. Seth is a jerk and 👏🏽Haley👏🏽 deserved👏🏽 better👏🏽! Even though Seth did get some bad news that night, it was still no excuse for him to act the way he did.
