PT Masasumi Kakizaki parece-me um mangaká subestimado — talvez até um pouco incompreendido.
Na minha opinião, tem uma das artes mais impressionantes que já vi num mangá. Já tinha lido a sua outra obra, The Tree of Death: Yomotsuhegui, e adorei, por isso sabia que havia fortes possibilidades de também gostar desta.
A sua escrita costuma ser criticada por ser simples e directa, mas, sinceramente, é precisamente isso que me agrada nela.
Este primeiro volume de Green Blood é simplesmente fabuloso. Em termos de acção e tensão, está entre o melhor que tenho lido.
Um autor que, a meu ver, merece muito mais reconhecimento.

In my view, he has some of the most impressive artwork I’ve ever seen in manga. I had already read his other work, The Tree of Death: Yomotsuhegui, and loved it, so I knew there was a strong chance I’d enjoy this one too.
His writing is often criticised for being simple and straightforward, but honestly, that’s exactly what I like about it.
This first volume of Green Blood is simply fantastic. In terms of action and tension, it’s among the best I’ve read.
An author who, in my opinion, deserves far more recognition.

A perfect example of excellent artwork paired up with bad writing, sadly. This five-volume manga series has a great premise: to tell the story of Brad and Luke Burns, two orphaned Irish immigrant brothers left to fend off for themselves as penniless children in post-Civil War New York, in the very violent and crime-ridden slum of Five Points in Manhattan, where gangs made up entirely of Irishmen give "protection" to the people for a fee.
The eldest of the brothers works secretly as a hitman for McDowell, the boss of the Gravediggers gang, who picked him up from the street and gave him a job as a little boy, while the youngest is a hard-working honest kid who dreams of getting out of the Five Points to go live on their own land in the expanding West. After Brad runs afoul of the boss' psychopathic son, hell breaks loose and the brothers have to leave the city, going on to pursue the villain who killed their mother into the Montana Territory. From then onwards, what had started off as an interesting and very rare Irish-American mafia plotline turns into a typical ultra-bloody Spaghetti Western storyline.
That was quite disappointing, and meant a significant drop in quality that damaged the story. Mr. Kakizaki is a stupendous mangaka, one of the very best I've seen, with a very detailed, very accurate and aesthetically gorgeous style; but unfortunately the same can't be said of his writing. It's my impression that he's not a bad writer, because the storytelling itself is fine and the plot isn't half-bad, it's the dialogue what's plain terrible. Exaggerated, histrionic film one-liner stuff, very unnatural and clearly very un-Western. And by un-Western I don't mean it's atypical for Westerns (the genre) but atypical for Westerners (the people). There are mannerisms and speech characteristics that aren't what people of the period and setting would do or say, and these inaccuracies bring into sharp relief that this is a Western written by an Asian whose familiarity with the genre comes from media representations of the US frontier life. You can spot nods to filmmakers like Leone and Scorsese. In fact, I am convinced that Gene McDowell looks like Don Corleone intentionally. Yes, I mean that: his features do resemble Marlon Brando in that role. As soon as I saw the resemblance, I was almost expecting a character to pop up that looked like Clint Eastwood, heh.
No, that's not bad, and to be fair, the inaccuracies aren't the main problem. Again, I reiterate the writing is. It gets progressively worse and worse, to the point that the last volume is so rushed and poorly handled that you wonder if the author was just desperate to wrap it up and be rid of the story once and for all. So, while the art remains a solid 5 stars from beginning to end, in all five volumes, with plenty of scenes that are worthy of framing and hanging on your wall, the storyline fluctuates a lot, going from 4 stars to 2 stars. It's strictly the merit of the artwork that's giving this the high rating it's got, and I remain convinced that it'd have been much better if Kakizaki had just taken care of the art exclusively and left the scripwriting to someone else, because it's obvious he doesn't excel at writing. His talent is visual, artistic, not verbal.

Za sada ne vidim ništa što bi sprečilo ovaj kratki serijal da postane jedan od omiljenih naslova 2025. godine! Sjajan uvod, besprekorno stilizovan crtež koji savršeno dočarava sumornu, blatnjavu i nasilnu atmosferu Njujorka u doba velikih migracija podstaknutih snovima o boljem životu.

Masasumi Kakizaki - Zelena krv 1-5 (Darkwood)
Na Menhetnu, krajem 19. veka - nakon Građanskog rata, siromaštvo, kriminal i prostitucija opustošili su četvrt Fajv Points, ogroman geto u kojem su završili svi oni koji su ostali bez američkog sna. Podzemlje, koje je korumpiralo vlast, čini sve da ono bude zakon. Usred plime imigranata koji iz dana u dan prolaze kroz Njujork, mladi Luk Berns nastoji da ostane pošten i marljiv kako bi prehranio sebe i svog nezaposlenog starijeg brata. On zna, kao i svi drugi, da se najopasniji gradski mafijaški klan, Grobari, oslanjaju na nemilosrdne ubice kako bi uspostavili svoj autoritet. Ali ono što on ne zna jeste da je najpoznatiji i najstrašniji od njih Tamni Kosač, niko drugi do njegov stariji brat Bred...
Manga Zelena krv se ističe svojom jedinstvenom kombinacijom zapadnjačkog divljenja i japanskog umetničkog stila. Ovaj mini serijal je najbolje opisati kao film "Bande Njujorka" samo u špageti vestern stilu. Sam autor je u pogovoru izjavio da je kao mali uživao u filmovima kao što su "Za šaku dolara" i "Đango" i da su mu špageti vesterni bili inspiracija. Čak je i Bredov kaput nalik onome koji Franko Nero nosi kao Đango. Elem, da ostavim filmsku industriju sa strane i da se vratim osvrtanju na ovaj naslov.
Nisam imao velika očekivanja od ovog naslova, posebno nakon lošeg Kakizakijevog "Skrovišta". Masasumi je i ovde pokazao da nije toliko vešt u pisanju scenarija, ali je ispalo bolje od "Skrovišta". Ova manga ima svojih prednosti, ali dijalozi su prilično površni i sam scenario je sve lošiji kako čitanje teče.
Radnja ove mange je dinamična i napeta, sa mnogo borbi i sukoba između različitih bandi. Kakizakijev crtež i atmosfera su najjači segmenti ovog serijala. Njegova pažnja prema detaljima je očigledna u svakom panelu, a posebno su dobro prikazane scene borbe i akcije. Karakteri su duboko razrađeni, pri čemu svaki od njih ima svoju priču i motivaciju. Ono što izdvaja Zelenu krv je njegova sposobnost da prenese atmosferu tog vremena i mesta. Kakizaki je uspeo da dočara surovu stvarnost tamnih ulica i nepravde koja je vladala.
Ova manga nije za svakoga jer sadrži nasilje i tamne teme. Ali ako volite akciju, karaktere sa dubinom, izazovnom pričom i uživate u moćnom grafizmu, Zelena krv je definitivno vredan čitanja.

Cerita : 2.5 bintang...mungkin karena masih bersambung (^ ^;)> aku mau memastikan dulu ending-nya, hehehee~
Tapi yang jelas, dengan berbagai you-know-what yang bertebaran, terlihat kesaktian editor(?) yang menebar jurus awan hitam dan jurus-jurus serupa, sehingga komik ini lebih enak dibaca (^,,,^)

Kalopun ada sedikit yang bikin ga puas, mungkin lebih ke soal karakterisasi tokoh-2nya yang karena berasal dari berbagai budaya (pendatang di Amerika, suku Indian, dll) itu seharusnya lebih 'kaya', tapi ini terasa dibikin satu 'cetakan'....mungkin supaya emosi tokoh-2nya bisa lebih mudah dipahami pembaca [di Jepang] ^ ^

Green Blood jsem měla možnost číst díky Nakladatelství CREW, které mi tento komiks zaslalo k recenzi, takže ještě jednou moc děkuji.

New York, polovina 19. století, gangy a nádherná obálka. Přesně pro mě. I tak jsem ale byla nervózní, když jsem do této mangy šla. Ukázalo se, že zbytečně.

V hlavní roli tu máme dva muže - chlapce, jeden z nich gangy nesnáší, druhý pro ně zabíjí. A jejich osudy se propletou - to je nám snad všem jasné.
I když se jedná o první díl mangy, oba dva už mají jakýsi charakter; jakési kouzlo, díky kterému si je oblíbíte oba.

Od začátku do konce je komiks nadupaný akcí a zvraty. Připomínám, že se jedná o první díl komiksové série - a zvlášť u mangy se toho většinou v prvním díle až tak moc neděje.
Také se nám už začíná odvíjet zápletka, což mě mile překvapilo.
Jsem neskutečně zvědavá, co přinesou další díly. Mimochodem, kresba a celkové zpracování této mangy je zkrátka úchvatné.

Masasumi Kizaki-jev Green Blood ima izuzetno zanimljivu permisu. Nešto što je jako, jako rijetko vidljivo u manga i anime industriji je zapravo taj stil westerna, stil kauboja. Vjerujem da mogu na prstima jedne ruke izbrojati broj mangi koji se održavaju u western svijetu. Veoma zanimljiv prikaz toga ima njegov crtež. Nevjerovatno detaljan, nevjerovatno realističan. Vjerujem da bi se u njega moglo gledati satima i satima. Vjerujem da svi koji smo pročitali, možemo da se složimo u to. Crtež je nešto što je možda čak i najbolji dio ove mange.
I tu prestaju dobre stvari ove mange. Pisanje Masasumi Kakizaki-ja, o kojima puno ljudi govori kada pričaju o mangi, je jako diskutabilno. Najprostije rečeno, nije nešto nevjerovatno, pogotovo u usporedbi sa crtežom. Ne pravi toliko dobru inverziju kao što pravi crtež, a svi znamo da je za dobru mangu potrebno dobro pisanje isto koliko i dobar crtež; ovdje imamo samo jedno. Dijalozi su izuzetno bazični, kao da ih je pisala umjetna inteligencija. Naravno, nisu abominalno loši, imaju smisla. Samo što jednostavno nisu očaravajući kakav je sam crtež. Generalno interesantan je bio prvi tankobon. Nastaviti ću, samo je pitanje koliko će biti zapravo zanimljivo. Također, pošto znam da ima samo 5 volijuma, znam da neće biti nešto mnogo ulaženja u dubinu likova. Što mi se čak i pomoću ovog prvog volijuma čini da će biti problem, jer svi znamo kako se završi. Dobri likovi koji ne imaju baš prevelike razvoje.

Masasumi Kakizaki's Green Blood has an extremely interesting premise. Something that is very, very rarely seen in the manga and anime industry is actually this western style, the cowboy style. I believe I can count the number of mangas set in a western world on the fingers of one hand. His artwork offers a very interesting depiction of this. Incredibly detailed, incredibly realistic. I believe one could look at it for hours and hours. I believe that all of us who have read it can agree on that. The artwork is perhaps even the best part of this manga.
And that's where the good things about this manga end. The writing by Masasumi Kakizaki, which many people talk about when discussing this manga, is highly debatable. Simply put, it's not something incredible, especially in comparison to the artwork. It doesn't create as good an inversion as the artwork does, and we all know that good writing is just as necessary for a good manga as good artwork; here, we only have one. The dialogues are extremely basic, as if written by artificial intelligence. Of course, they are not abominably bad, they make sense. They are just not as captivating as the artwork itself. The first tankobon was generally interesting. I will continue, it's just a question of how interesting it will actually be. Also, knowing that there are only 5 volumes, I know there won't be much depth to the characters. Which even from this first volume seems like it will be a problem, because we all know how it ends. Good characters who don't have much development

The dialogues are extremely basic, as if written by artificial intelligence. Of course, they are not abominably bad, they make sense. They are just not as captivating as the artwork itself. The first tankobon was generally interesting. I will continue, it's just a question of how interesting it will actually be. Also, knowing that there are only 5 volumes, I know there won't be much depth to the characters. Which even from this first volume seems like it will be a problem, because we all know how it ends. Manga w klimatach westernu? Stało to dość daleko od moich zainteresowań, ale koniec końców skusiłam się i zaskoczenia w sumie nie było – nastawiałam się na ciekawą historię z intrygującymi bohaterami i od pierwszego rozdziału wiedziałam, że trafiłam w dziesiątkę.
I żeby nie było, to nie ma tu nic odkrywczego. Gangi, zemsta, dużo brutalności, ładnych kobiet i walki o marzenia. Brad i Luke to dwaj bracia, którym przyszło dorastać w najgorszym brudzie Nowego Jorku XIX wieku. Wszechobecne gangi, prostytucja, walka o przetrwanie każdego dnia, do tego dyskryminacja, przekupna policja i brak perspektyw w świecie, gdzie ludzkie życie jest nic nie warte. Jeden z braci wciąż potrafi się uśmiechać i marzyć o lepszym jutrze. Drugi w tajemnicy przed tym pierwszym walczy o nie w sposób, o którym lepiej by młodszy braciszek nie wiedział…
Brad jest mordercą na usługach jednego z gangów. I to nie byle jakim, bo siejącym postrach nie tylko wśród wrogów, ale nawet i ,,swoich”. Jednak jednocześnie prowadzi też drugie życie, trochę takiego nieudacznika, który pracy sobie nawet znaleźć nie potrafi. A wszystko po to, by chronić młodszego brata nie tylko przed fizycznymi niebezpieczeństwami, ale również całym tym rynsztokiem, który spływa ulicami miasta. Luke jest też dla Brada ostatnią kotwicą, by trzymać się resztek człowieczeństwa.
Co trzeba przyznać, to jest dość ciężka historia. Przygnębiająca. Krwi i brutalności tu nie żałują, do tego projekty wielu postaci jeszcze bardziej potęgują to poczucie brudu i ohydy, którym przesiąkł świat w Green Blood. Ciekawym zabiegiem są też sporadyczne rysunki poprzecinane liniami – jakby pokazujące bohaterów w sieci, związanych, bez możliwości uwolnienia się z tego świata i roli, w którym przyszło im żyć.
Mroczna i brutalna opowieść, ale też mimo wszystko z jakimś tlącym się światełkiem nadziei. Brad jest mrocznym mścicielem, prawdziwą Kostuchą, ale jego miłość do brata jest autentyczna i sprawia, że Brada naprawdę da się lubić. Jest kimś, kto dosłownie poddał już swoją duszę i moralność, ale dla najbliższych wciąż pozostaje człowiekiem. Jednak nie będzie też miał żadnych zahamowań, aby ich chronić.

Luke & Brad sont deux frères très proches qui vivent dans une cité de non-droit. Si Luke n’a que 13ans Brad est déjà adulte et fait tout pour protéger/venger son petit frère. Il rêve de tuer leur père, qui les a abandonnés à un sort peu enviable.
« Le croc mitaine » C’est ains que je vois Brad avec son grand manteau, ses cheveux longs et sa façon d’exterminer les méchants pour 10$.
Brad est Badass mais pas too much. Comment dire… Il est cheaté mais ça reste plausible…
Dancing in the Fire – On a cette image magnifique de Brad qui fait ses affaires, pas plus perturbé que ça par un incendie.
Grave Diggers – C’est le gang du héros. Une belle organisation de gentlemen salopards.
Je reste sans voix. J’ai lu la première moitié d’une traite. Passionnant. Merci @OverTheMoonWithBooks – encore une fois.
Les émotions passent bien. Un côté « horreur cynique » Quand la situation l’exige…
Fin du chap.6 un retournement de situation plaisant. Qui n’est pas content de voir un connard en pâtir ? Sommes-nous sans doute tous un peu sado maso ?

La trama esta localizado en la ciudad de Nueva York, principalmente en el distrito de Manhattan, donde en el puerto desembarcan personas del viejo continente buscando un nuevo comienzo y un buen vivir de lo q no fue en su países originales, al cabo de los años esas ilusiones se fueron perdiendo, ya q siguieron estando de la misma manera de la que fue un principio, se crearon las famosas bandas "gangsters" de donde sale este personaje, despiadado, con un sello en el pecho G.D "Grave Digger" su nombre Grim Reaper.

No me gustó Hideout pero quería darle otra oportunidad al autor porque, a pesar de su escritura plana, tiene buen arte y acción. Aquí encontré lo mismo, pero me decepcionó un poco más ya que la premisa de Green Blood me parecía interesantísima. Y es que claro, dos hermanos irlandeses buscando el sueño americano en el barrio más violento de un Estados Unidos recuperándose de la guerra civil suena ultra tentador. Pero parafraseando a Dewey, no espero nada y aún así logran decepcionarme.
Además, si bien el arte de Kakizaki es brutal y logra un nivel de detalle increíble, sus diseños son algo simples y poco interesantes. Les juro que yo quería que me gustara pero no me entró mucho, son pocos tomos así que quizás lo siga leyendo pero mmm.

Un Manga Western dans l'univers de Gangs of New york. Seulement 5 tomes, une montée en puissance progressive et malgré une fin rude, on ne lâche pas l'oeuvre une seconde. Une histoire touchante de pauvres mecs, et nanas paumés dans un nouveau monde qui n'était qu'un miroir aux alouettes. Des dessins sombres, un découpage violent... Un désespoir omniprésent digne des plus grands Acid Westerns, une ultra violence du spaghetti western ... Bref un monde sombre et sans espoir et un anti héros : comment rester humain quand on est un laissé pour compte ? C'est la question que nous pose à nouveau Masasumi Kakizaki après les excellents Rainbow et Hide out.

Eu nunca tinha me envolvido tanto com um manga quanto esse. Achei que não fosse existir esse manga que teria uma história que prende, com um desenho q eu admirasse! Mas tá aqui, eh esse. Eu não li tantos mangas na vida mas a minha experiência até agora sempre senti as histórias um pouco truncada o que me impedia de ser raptada pela história e acabava sempre com um gosto agridoce e sempre queria ter gostado mais do que de fato gostei. Mas esse aqui, perfeito! Fico mais feliz por ter continuação, pq eu já tenho todos os volumes e porque em 5 volumes fecha toda a história!

Este primer tomo me intrigo un poco, siento que no es de mi estilo o de mis preferencias, pero logro engancharme, queria conocer la motivacion y mas sobre el pasado de Brad, siento que es un personaje que esta muy bien construido y por eso me intriga. Luke y Emma personajes mas secundarios tambien me gustaron y quiero saber que va a suceder con ellos .

Brad a Luke žijí v New Yorku ve čtvrti Five Points. Jsou Irští přistěhovalci a život se s nimi nemaže. Luke má práci v docích, zato Brad práci hledá, alespoň naoko. Vede totiž dvojí život, který před svým bratrem tají.
Začátek série se mi moc líbil, příběh nabitý akcí a všemožnými zvraty.

Para alguien que no sabe nada del mundo del manga, esta historia se me hace muy interesante, misteriosa y dinámica. Me gusta su formato y el dibujo en ella.
