It is the morning hours in the small town of Hammond and, as the town wakes up it finds that there is something spreading. Something that is not seen until it is too late because by then, you are already infected. At that point, they are already... Hatched.

It seems odd to be the first person reviewing a book some three months after its release, but then this novel by Jason R Davis is, in and of itself, an odd beast. The blurb sets this up to be an arachnophobe's worst nightmare: An outbreak of invisible spiders that cannot be seen until it's too late. Yet what actually unveils is less an insects gone wild novel, and more another well-known genre that I won't spoil here. It might have worked, but for the fact Davis doesn't provide the reader with a character to truly connect with. Instead, this is the independent horror novel world's equivalent of Ju-on: The Grudge. Character after character is introduced, only to spend a chapter or three with them, before the spiders strike. Cue new characters. A good deal of the tension developed by the great idea of invisible spiders that can get inside your body evaporates when it becomes apparent that no-one has any chance against them. With no-one to root for, this all became repetitive after a while.

To be fair, Davis explains in his afterword that this novel was intended as the first in a trilogy of novels. However that does not change that I had to read 320 pages of what I thought was a novel with a three act structure, only to realise at the end of which I still have no idea what's really going on.

I found the author's writing style to be somewhat repetitive, with the same information being conveyed two and sometimes three different ways inside the same POV section. On occasion, said information is even conflictual (such as when one character laments that the partner they shared a bed with for 10 years of marriage is gone. A few chapters later the same phrase is used but the time in bed together is described as 15 years). Davis thanks his editor in the opening section, but there are far too many typos and other errors throughout the book, even for an independent release; the worst of which is during the chapter in which the editor's notes have failed to be removed! I hope these have been fixed as further editions have been released.

In the end, Hatched represents a missed opportunity for me: A fantastic idea that never really got out of second gear. I should have been freaked out of my mind for more than the three or four chapters that I shivered at as I pictured what it would be like to have a spider leg poke out from beneath my eyelid. Some will no doubt like the direction in which Davis takes his novel, but unfortunately, I get enough of that sub-genre elsewhere.

1.5 Flakes of Spider Dust for Hatched.

This book was not bad at all but the spiders were the big show stopper. I think this book was very scary but could use some work on the editing. I do like a good scary book. * I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review*

Hatched Invisible Spiders book 1 Jason R Davis

Fresh spin on becoming a zombie voodooish style. What happens when you break up with a crazy womon, who dabbles in the dark arts you never know what they might do.Jaime sent John an envelope in the mail she is his Ex-girlfriend with just a few words scrolled on the paper but the envelope contained a mysterious white powder.John was patient zero and it spread very quickly through a small town. What makes this story different is by the time you see the spiders under your skin, up your nose or in your eyes ...it is already too late for you. They would dig and mutilate themselves trying to get the spiders out, but there was no blood from the cuts and laceration. They are a symptom of the change taking place within the dying.John did what most of us would do if we were really sick and not feeling well, he called a trusted friend Marty who was not happy about being woken up at 3 am and told to go to Johns house right away. After many hours of watching his friend he decided he needed to get him to the hospital or go to see the town doctor. they knew where he lived, right next to the office.
The town doctor Dr. and his wife opened the office early, others came in early as well and found the Doctor was already in the office.
Dr. examined John and his friend more than likely was sick as well he denied it but he looked horrible. He locked the two men into the office told his wife Nancy, to lock the door and call the patients and tell them the office was closed today. As she handed him his coffee. The Doctor went into his office and called the CDC, for all intent and purpose John was dead, yet he is still walking around as though he was alive.
I enjoyed this story and yes there were quite a few characters but that is to be expected, there is a lot going on in this small town. We had the Davis family Jason ,his little sister and his Aunt Tina that helped him take care of his mom’s bar while she was away. Tina wasn’t that much older then Jason. Her Ex Vince was an abusive jerk. Rob & Thomas were part of the police dept. Bruce was the driver of a refrigerator truck just passing through but got stuck in this town. People in a little diner, The town drunk, Mr Jones, Billie is the man with a vendetta for those who had embarrassed him when he was in grade school, he is a bit crazy I think and so may more folks mentioned. The Story was solid, the characters well developed and a great twist in the zombie genere.
It could have used a better Editor. There was a short expert where we hear what a spider was thinking and what it saw. That didn’t make sense at all because it happened once.So after the spiders being a symptom of the person dying and becoming a zombie we have the spider taking on a personality? Even though it was cute ,it didn’t fit the rest of the story but it wasn't a big deal and didn't really detract from the story. It just made you question if you mistook the gist of the spiders.Even so it is a book worth reading.

ABR's full Hatched audiobook review and many others can be found at Audiobook Reviewer.

Hatched is a horrifying book that will terrify most everyone. Small spiders that scurry around invisible to everyone - that is until you are infected then you see them. Then it is too late.

The thought of spiders crawling all over and in one's body is terrifying. Reading this book is like knowing that you sat next to someone with chickenpox or lice or some other itch inducing thing. You can't help but scratch - at first you don't notice it, but then you realize what you've been doing. Then you stop, take stock of what is around you and peer closely at the speck on your arm or on the floor next to your feet ---- is that a spider or a bump? Did my flesh just move? What is that by my feet? God forbid, is it a small mound of black ash????

One cannot read this book without experiencing some of these questions; sometimes repeatedly!

There are lots of terrifying things in our world but to imagine a world where spiders crawl or are absorbed whole into your body to multiply and procreate thousands upon thousands is horrifying on its own. By the time you see the spiders IT IS TOO LATE to do anything.

There is no clear answer where the spiders came from - outer space, government experiment gone awry or mother nature getting back at humans? Reminiscent of Return of the Living Dead there is a lone woman waiting in a room six hours a day, three days a week waiting on the phone to ring. It never rings .... until today.

The plot was well thought out - there are a few rough spots but nothing that will detract from the reading. There are a few additional story lines that the author spends time on but always comes back to the darn spiders.

The narrator was excellent. Spoke clearly and smoothly.

The audio production was excellent as well, no glitches.

'Hatched' (Invisible Spiders: Book 1) is still currently free, on Kindle, through the end of the month. Is it worth the download? Read on to find out. . .

There is not a tagline for this book, but if there were, I would give it this one:
"If you see them, it's already too late."

First of all, I just have to say that the concept of this book is brilliant! A completely new, refreshing take on the zombie genre.

So why only 3 stars, you ask?

This book started out as a strong 5 stars, however as different characters/storylines began to intertwine themselves, I repeatedly found myself wanting to get back to the "spiders" storyline. I understand that this is Book One of a proposed trilogy/series(?), which requires certain set-up, I just felt that some of the important information was left out/forgotten(?) I am hoping that the 2nd book gets back to ground zero, so to speak. Also, there are more than enough typos to warrant a mention here, which also distracts from the reality of the story.

Enough of the negative aspects (nothing that better editing and slightly fewer side-stories won't fix).

On to the positive.
Davis was super-smart to make the spiders in the story of the tiny, small variety (the size that can quickly scurry across your skin, before they burrow underneath...) Let's just say that if you are not already scared of spiders, reading this will make you paranoid/terrified of them!
[true story: while reading this book, I took several opportunities to enjoy the beautiful spring weather, and read the majority of it outside. At one point, I caught movement out of the corner of my eye and, I promise, there was a little black spider scurrying across the porch. Needless to say, I held my breath for a moment!]

So, to answer the above question, yes, this book is worth the download (typos aside). Davis does not hold back on the horror aspects, and there is more than enough to keep you awake at night. I am looking forward to reading the next book.

If you're looking for a creepy read about some devious spiders who not only infiltrate, consume and animate their hosts, then this book is a gem. Although you may find yourself wondering how this hellish plague started, Mr. Davis jumps right into the invasion stage...and stays there. Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy the book but the majority of the narrative is filled with humans being mowed down by the plague of sentient parasites. There were so many characters, so much dedicated to setting up what is normally the first third of the average creature feature. I kept expecting a hero, a knowledgeable entity or entities ready to fight the problem to appear, but as Mr. Davis has set this up to be a trilogy, I can only hope redemption emerges in the second book. The characters and their backstories were very rich and well-written but there simply was an overwhelming amount of...fodder.

Could this book use some editing, to really make it shine? Yes. But Mr. Davis' talents cannot be denied. Despite typos and scenes which really could be cut, I read this book, felt the dread and enjoyed it :)

3.25⭐️ “Once you see the spiders its too late”

I dont really know what I was expecting with this one. I went in blind looking for just a creepy story as a pallet cleanser… What did i get? Definitely a creepy story but so much more than I was expecting!

This book follows a ton of different characters as they endure the invisible spiders. Invisible spiders that infest your body and turn you into a host. This was a really unique take on a “zombie” apocalypse. I can only assume Itll continue into the second book and only get worse, and way more creepy crawly. 🕷️

I was pleasantly surprised with this book, however the star drop age is due to there being so many random characters. I get why it was done this way once I finished the book but sometimes it was a little hard to follow, we would see one character at the beginning of the book and not see them until close to the end and I had to sit there and try and remember where we left off with them. BUT i do think it adds to the effect the book was trying to go for. For me personally it was a little disorienting.

Im excited to go onto book 2 though!

The concept of invisible spiders creating zombies is terrifyingly amazing, but there were a few things that held it back from being a 4 or 5 star book. The main problem I had, was that there were many printing and grammatical errors throughout that would pause or stop the overall flow of the story entirely, thus having to re-engage back into it. The only other issue I had was the amount of different people whose POV was being told, made it difficult to care about each one, but halfway through you see how each person is connected and how their individual stories interweave(like a spider web you could say). While, I could barely recall 90% of the characters names, I do remember their actions as the author does a great job of engaging you into the snippet of each persons life and thought process that we get to read. The author does a great job as well with the storytelling in the last quarter of the book, which sold me on reading the 2nd book, as I want to see where the story goes from here.

I was bumbed and happy to find that this is the beginning of a trilogy. Bumbed because it just came out and there will be a wait. Happy to find that this blashemy is going to go on. LOL I hate Spiders and I am not alone. What about invisible ones? Ones that other people cannot really see until its too late? What happens when they feed on you? Gives me the creeps just thinking about it. Beware of the editors notes in chapter 15.

Spiders give me the creeps, as did this novel, I was reminded of this when I received a note that the problems with Chapter 15 have been rectified. So if you have a copy you should download the revised one, or if you didn't pick it up yet, what are you waiting for?

I was excited to read this book at first, but it quickly became one I put down and didn't finish for a LONG time.
The book is very repetitive in the way information is given, and sometimes contradictory. The editing (in the edition I have) is lacking - a lot of spelling and/or grammar errors, spacing errors, and words that don't make sense in context (reminds me of auto-correct mistakes, honestly). The editor should have caught all these mistakes, and worked with (or told) the author about the repetitiveness.
I like the idea of the book, it's an interesting and creepy one. It does hop from character to character a lot, but given the nature of the book it makes sense. I likely will read the next book in the series when it comes out... hopefully it won't take me as long to get through.

HATCHED: This book gave me the heebee-jeebees!!! I don’t like spiders to begin with, so this book creeped me out on another lever. The way the author went into detail on how the spiders infest and take over the body was so real, I felt my skin crawl. There’s not much character development, and the story hops from person to person, storyline to storyline. But it still turned out to be a good book non the less. Book 1 is mostly about infestation and growing their number. Though there were pockets of action, most of the story was about the spiders taking over. The ending reads like a traditional zombie novel, (biting and eating it’s victims), so that made the book more enjoyable. I’m looking forward to Book 2 to see what direction the author takes us!

Yuck! Spiders! This book is filled with them. It gives me goosebumps just thinking about it. Not for the faint of heart. It also has a very interesting cast of characters. Towards the middle of the book the author does get a little sidetracked with their stories but gets back to the spiders shortly there after. Lots of action, never a dull moment.

I give this one five stars for several reasons. One, it's an indie author trying to get his book out there and read. Two, it takes a lot of time and effort to write, edit and publish a book pretty much on your own when you;re just starting. This was a different take on a zombie infestation without the normal drooling, mindless shamblers that inevitably chew on your flesh. This idea came out of left field and and has nothing to do with the common ways that you can become a zombie. It is something that will get your hairs to stand on end and give you the creepy crawlies when you discover what is happening to these people. My only criticism is that you get no character development. You are introduced to character after character and no protagonist to root for. Admittedly this is to be a trilogy I believe so maybe one is coming. With that being said, while it might not be the best book ever written it is definitely worth a read.

4 🌟

Spiders, Spiders and more spiders.
Not just any regular spiders but spiders that are invisible until it is to late.
Spiders who also communicated with each other, who took over its hosts body and spoke with in the humans minds.
This book started off strong, I thought.
Then, I got confused. I will say though that I listened to this versus reading the book itself.
I don't think that this book had a specific MC. It jumped around a lot and I could have over looked it as well. I did get sad when they were getting the little girl.
I felt like it was doing a lot of bouncing around.
I will say that I think this was more grotesque.
The book is definitely horrific due to invisible spiders.

Was this book worth the read, ABSOLUTELY!!!!! Would I recommend it, again ABSOLUTELY!!
But if you do not like spiders, I do not know if I would read. It gave me the creepy crawlies!!
But it also fit so perfectly with the month of Oct.

Hatched has a fascinating concept. It involves supernatural spiders which are invisible until they've already crawled beneath your skin. These parasites take control of their hosts and urge them to spread.

This plays out in a few genuinely creepy scenes with a combination of creature feature and zombie outbreak vibes.

However, a repetitive narrative, bloated cast, and wandering prose sadly make this somewhat of a slog.

The first scene where we see a character realise the horror of spiders burrowing into their skin is excellent. The second, third, fourth etc. of virtually the same scene are less so.

A fascinating concept which, unfortunately, fails to reach its potential.

Well I’m pissed. Where was the spiders 🕷️. I was expecting something like eight legged freaks. Or Samuel L Jackson coming out, saying he’s tired of the spiders. IYKTYK.
There were some inconsistencies with misspelled words and grammar. And also the Kindle unlimited version is different from the physical book version the chapters don’t line up.
I’m going to give this book 3 stars in the beginning it did give you that all over creepy chilly vibe that just makes your whole body shutter . But since it was lacking and spider action, it’s a three star for me sadly.

There are very few books that can genuinely unsettle me, but I must admit that these spiders gave me the heebie-jeebies. There are a few grammatical errors that need to be corrected because they caused my brain to malfunction, forcing me to pause and try to comprehend what the author intended to convey. However, aside from these minor issues, it’s a well-crafted creepy book, and I can’t help but be curious about the events that unfold in the sequel.

I have a fear of spiders ever since one fell over my face as a child; this book forces me to picture these creatures in more ways than one. Each chapter feels episodically written— almost like a sci-fi made-for-tv limited series.

I listened to the audiobook version of this book. If you've read any of my previous audiobook reviews, you know the voices, particularly the opposite gender voices, are very important to me in an audiobook. Hatched failed to deliver on that score. The opposite gendered voices came off very much as caricatures to me. Additionally, the cast for this book was so large that some of the voices sounded the same, so it wasn't always easy to tell who was speaking.

I hate spiders with a fiery, burning passion, so a horror novel using spiders has a much greater chance of scaring me than the average horror novel does (Arachnophobia is one of the scariest movies I've ever seen, and one of the few that actually scared me). Hatched did not scare me. The beginning sort of creeped me out, but then it just became rather blasé.

I didn't really care about any of the characters and I would be find with this entire town being blown off the map to eradicate the threat, and I'm typically not okay with those measures when they're suggested for zombie books and movies (although spiders do scare me more than zombies do, so there's that.)

The book wasn't bad, but it didn't suck me in or make me want to keep listening to find out what happened next. I had no problem hitting pause and putting the phone away when I'd finished whatever task I'd been doing while listening.

Overall I give Hatched 2.5 out of 5 stars.

It's difficult care about or root for any of the human characters because you figure out rather quickly that every single named person is going to be killed by the end of the chapter they're introduced in.
