Celeste had been dreaming of Bryn since she was eight: the flash of light across the sky, Bryn running, the explosion that nothing human should have survived, and then Bryn climbing out of the smoking crater and looking right at her. He was beautiful: six feet tall with muscles like coiled steel and dark blue eyes. His hair was black and his body was chiseled out of marble, like a Greek God.
For years she had thought he was nothing but a dream. But slowly the dream changed, and it seemed that he was trying to reach her. His arm stretched out as if to touch her.
And then she saw him, burning under the light of dawn. His skin was flame as their eyes met. Celeste’s heart sped up and she gasped. Bryn had found her.
I have been writing science fiction and fantasy stories for many years. My writing has an edge to it. I enjoy exploring the dark and surreal landscapes of the mind.
My first fantasy novel, The Crystal Warrior, has just been released. I am currently working on book two in the series.
I also have a science fiction collection called Skin of Giants.
I grew up in Washington State, went to college in New Mexico, and now live in Minnesota. I am an Engineering Consultant (nerd) for a large retail corporation during the day, and a fiction writer / musician at night.
I live in the suburbs, just north of Minneapolis, with one wife (dancer), one kid (boy), and two cats (fat).
I absolutely loved Cooley's take on Vampires. The plot was good but a little underdeveloped and the emotion of disbelief that the characters show is not believable. This novel could be great if given more of a back story. Maybe a prequel and/or sequel? Cooley does a wonderful job at descriptions of scenery, etc. Which is a great way to draw in a reader. I know I personally love to be drawn in by imagining whats around me. I enjoy the read much more! This book is engaging and entertaining and the story keeps you hooked. I look forward to reading more of Cooley's work.
I received a review copy of Bryn Morrow from story cartel. I wanted to read it since a very long time not because I felt drawn towards it but for a simple reason that I wanted to try a genre that I do not read much. This book falls into the fantasy genre and somehow I am glad that I have kept myself away from this category. The book is a complete disaster and let me tell you how! And I am being as honest as I could be!
Cover-page: cover-page of the book seems as if it has been taken out from a discarded graphic novel. It is a failed attempt to describe the inside story f the book, sadly. The character on the cover is Bryn. He not only looks very animated but also fails to connect with the reader in the first glance or subsequent ones for that matter.
Characters: characters in the book are, wait, let me recall. Hmm... So there is Bryn Morrow who everybody thinks is a vampire but really is not. He is just a latent. At least that is what he claims. Bryn is in search of this girl called Celesta. She is the girl who has crazy dreams and recognises Bryn from her dreams. And, of course, the villain. Simon is also a vampire, opppsss, latent. Or it’s okay. Not that he knows it himself.
Concept: for once I felt draw towards reading the book solely because of the concept. There are people living in the world or supposedly dead, or reborn or whatever in some explosion in the 80’s. They are now reunited in the present world. Two of them are latent and the girl is a human.
Story line: storyline, yes. Okay wait. Is there a story? Oh yeah... the boy finds the girl. Villain enters. Kills boy and girl. Story over. Sorry... spoiler!!
Language: language is very flat. It is devoid of any emotion. There are many unnecessary details such as the paperback on the table near the hospital bed, the dining chairs etc etc.
Good points: the book started well. First two chapters are very interesting. The concept of course is very intriguing. It raises your expectations from the book.
Not-so-good points: there are so many elements that I wished were there in the book. Such as a story. Strong characters. A good language trail. So on and so forth. But it disappointed me throughout. This is it. I am not touching another fantasy novel for a long time.
Overall: iwis I had never come across the book. But now that I have and I have read it, I would ask those who want to read it to not have any expectations. One can probably teach English with the help of this book since there were no spelling or grammatical mistakes.

I have read several books from Mike in the past but this is the first full length one from him. While I did enjoy the story the length that it was. There were just a few things that didn’t really sit right with me. For instance, we have Bryn who is a Latent, which I am still not 100% what that is, we know they are like vampires but they aren’t vampires. But I suppose my big upset was the fact Celeste didn’t seem shocked at all when she found out what Bryn was. And to that fact, none of her friends seemed to concern either. Now that would have been awesome if we would have known if the characters had a history with paranormal, but we don’t know anything about that. I don’t really understand Celeste’s powers that much and I was hoping that they would be expanded upon so that we would be able to learn a little more about here. But they weren’t, so I am left wondering if there will be another book that will be more about her. Besides that, the story line itself was an interesting one for sure. It kept you turning the pages wanting to find out what was going on with everything. But like I said, I wish we would have been able to have more background on Celeste and her friends. If that would have been included, it would have added more to the story.
This book was unlike anything I was expecting, though I know that when reading this author's work, one must expect the unexpected. It's a refreshing twist on the vampire genre, but this guy doesn't sparkle. This short book is filled with suspense, action and even romance. It ends on a note that made me feel certain we will be seeing more of Bryn Morrow.
Let me start off by saying that I have read a lot of vampire books and I loved the concept for the vampire in this book. Bryn is from another time searching for someone that has haunted him for many years. I was able to get into this book and read it in one seating.
