Awesome book set! Love Julie Kenner and all these other ladies. These books are perfect if you want to laugh and be taken to a fantasy world for a few hours. A must have!
HAUNTED ON BOURBON STREET by Deanna Chase: This is the first book in Deanna Chase's "A Jade Calhoun Novel" series. Our heroine, Jade Calhoun, is an empath who recently left Idaho to move to New Orleans to be near her best friend Kat. She teaches a glass bead making class and works part time at "The Grind" coffee shop owned and run by Pyper. She lives in an apartment over a strip club in the French Quarter which is owned by the ever so sexy landlord Kane and business partner of Pyper's. On Jade's first night in her apartment she encounters a ghost who seems sexually drawn to her! Throw in a witch, a ghost hunter, a low-level Angel, a violent ex-boyfriend and a strong lesbian bar tender and you have a host of characters that make this paranormal romance a fun and entertaining adventure! Be forewarned, you won't be able to put this book down! I've read it twice!! It's that good! THE ACCIDENTAL DEMON SLAYER by Angie Fox: I don't want to spoil anything about the plot as it is a MUST-READ paranormal adventure! Preschool teacher Lizzie meets her biker Grandma on her birthday for the first time and a demon appears in her bathroom! All of a sudden her dog Pirate can talk! She discovers a gorgeous sexy man Dimitri following her who claims to be her protector while her Grandma admits she is a witch and that Lizzie is a powerful Demon Slayer! Throw in a coven of crazy biker witches some nasty imps and demons and you have a fun paranormal adventure you won't be able to put down! I highly recommend it and have added Angie Fox to my authors to read list!! CARPE DEMON (ADVENTURES OF A DEMON-HUNTING SOCCER MOM) by Julie Kenner: Delightfully fun paranormal adventure with a butt-kicking soccer mom! Loved every minute of this story about a retired Demon Hunter who is forced out of retirement when a high level demon is threatening her city! I've added Julie Kenner to my MUST-READ list of authors!! GIRL'S GUIDE TO WITCHCRAFT (JANE MADISON # 1) by Mindy Klasky: This is the first book I have read by Mindy Klasky and it definitely won't be my last! Her quirky but flawed heroine Jane Madison is a modern witch that will entertain you as she discovers her magical talents. This first book of the series begins with her discovery that she is a powerful witch when she unknowingly releases her familiar from his stone stature prison and takes you on a magic filled roller coaster ride of pure fun! I loved every second it it and can't wait to read more about Jane's growth as a witch!! HOW TO DATE A WEREWOLF (BOOK ONE OF THE RILEY CRUZ NOVELS) by Rose Pressey: I absolutely loved this first book in the Rylie Cruz series! Rylie is a lovable werewolf leading a zany and complicated life in the French Quarter of New Orleans! I loved the relationship of her best friend Jennifer as well as super sexy neighbor Jack as a possible love interest! Rose Pressey sure knows how to write fun paranormal romantic adventures! I can't wait to read more in the Rylie Cruz series!! I highly recommend this book! EASY BAKE COVEN by Liz Schulte: This is the first book I have read by Liz Schulte and it certainly won't be my last! I loved the rich and wonderful characters she created in this first book of the Easy Bake Coven series! Selene & Cheney make a wonderful supernatural power couple with swoon worthy romance mixed in the supernatural adventures!! I loved every second and didn't want it to end! I can't wait to read the rest of the series by this MUST-READ author!!
There is no way to give just one review for this book set, but several. So bear with me a moment. The first book is called Haunted on Bourbon street. Jade moves into a new apartment in New Orleans. She wasn't expecting to have a ghostly roommate. That's right, a ghost and we're not talking Casper the friendly ghost. This ghost might have a split personality. It's nice and sweet to Jade and scaring the hell out of her friend and boss Pyper. Jade and her Ghostbusters pals have to find out what's going on with the ghost or they all in deep trouble. In the Accidental Demon Slayer Lizzie thought she was going to have a nice quiet birthday. Wrong !! That went out the window. Her grandma comes to her house and starts throwing manic jelly jars at demons coming out of Lizzies' toilet. Turns out grandma is a biker witch and Lizzie is a demon slayer. Being a pre school teacher didn't prepare her for being a demon slayer. Or did it ? In Carpe demon Kate thought she would live life as a normal mother and housewife. Turns out she's a Demon Hunter working for the Vatican. Demons are coming out of the woodwork as she is trying to juggle her husband, her children and a dinner party. What's a demon Hunter to do ? Kick butt !! In a Girls Guide To Witchcraft Jane has a ton of problems. The library she works for has increased her workload, didn't give her a raise and cuts her salary in half. The upside to that is that she gets to move into a cottage on the library grounds rent free. The guy that Jane has been crushing on since forever is married ( the creep). Her cottage has a secret room full of books on witchcraft. With that she gets a super diva familiar named Nemo and a sexy guardian named David. What's a witch in training to do ? Have fun of course. In How to Date a Werewolf Riley is trying to keep her supernatural dating service a float. With psycho ex client giving her hell and stalker following her around how is she suppose to take care of her own love life ? Top it all off her roommate and the guy she's crazy about think she's nuts! They will be in for a big surprise on the next full moon when Riley starts sprouting fur and fangs. In Easy Bake Coven, Selene is trying to find a way to tell her strict grandmother that she is a witch and a part of a coven. But the surprise is on Selene when she finds out that her grandmother has a surprise about her. Seems that Selene is not completely human. She's fae and the hot guy that only she could see for the time being is fae as well ( and he is no underbelly either).
Fabulous deal! I bought this outrageously low-priced collection of novels because I'm familiar with Angie Fox's Accidental Demon Slayer and her newsletter suggested the omnibus. I enjoyed reading a few of these novels very much and even went out and bought more novels by one of the authors. I'll probably buy more from two or three of the other authors, as well. One story I loved, but there were hints of politics I found uncomfortable. (E.g. all the female characters other than the main character, her best friend, and her grandmother were stupid or slutty or bitches, etc.) Still, the author and the series are worth another try. Another series rang too close to my every day life (running around after children) to feel escapist, despite the demons, but it was well done and interesting. And then there was a fun one that felt like a first novel, but I'd love to see how the author changes and grows.
I read these novels a few months ago, so my memory is no longer fresh. One of them felt like it was written with a little too much influence from a writer's critique group. (Removing instances of the verb "to be" means reworking sentences, not just deleting. The resulting language felt very awkward.)
So they weren't all immediate favorites, but this was a wonderful way to check out authors whose work I'd never encountered before.
I got this set because I love Julie Kenner and of course she amazes me every time. I can say the other books were amazing as well. Definitely worth reading and the price was well worth it!
I really enjoyed the first two and will read more by those two authors. The rest of them are good. I might read more by them. I liked them enough to finish them.
Book one is basically a ghost story, so if you like ghost stories, you will like the book. As for me, I don't like ghost stories so I didn't like the book too much.
Book 2 is about a girl who suddenly finds out she is a demonslayer. It's a really good book, no cliffhanger, but seems the start of a series.
Book 3 is about a former demon hunter, drawn back into her old profession. It didn't catch my interest and I skipped it.
Book 4 is about witchcraft, about a librarian who stumbles upon witchcraft. The character is a weak one, letting others tell her what to do. I tried reading it, but then moved on.
Book 5 is about dating a werewolf. And it sucks. I struggled through reading the book or skimming through the book actually. The main characters, all the characters were stupid as can be and the book stunk.
There is one more book in the set and I just didn't bother to read it. It was about witches and witchcraft, and I had all the lousy books I could stand.
It's a shame you can't give a book a zero, because if you could, I would. I'm really glad that I didn't pay money for this. I wouldn't recommend it to my worst enemy.
I enjoyed the stories in this book. They were well written and so different. When I read a compilation, I prefer the stories to be different. I get bored when they are the same. The differences in these stories made it exciting enough that I read them straight through -not stopping to do anything else. I would recommend this to everyone.
Each of the books in the series were fun and enjoyable. The final book left me wanting more. There were typographical and grammar issues with each book but, they had no real impact on any of the stories.
Six very talented women who each created those own world. The common bond being the paranormal and remarkable, witty, strong and incredibly CHARMING leading ladies! A truly enjoyable read. Good job!
I read so many positive reviews about the book set, especially the story titled "Haunted on Bourbon Street", and so I was really looking forward to reading the story. But to my disappointment it wasn't what I had hoped for. I just can't find the words to explain exactly all that I felt was wrong. For the most part I found the main characters not particularly endearing and they felt a bit wooden and the love interest storyline seemed forced. The story was over narrated with with inner monologue by the heroine of this story. After about 6 or 7 chapters in I just couldn't keep on going so jumped to the last four chapters just to see how it ended. A couple chapters out of those four were more entertaining but the last chapter towards the end was too cheesy for my liking. It was like some dialogue you would see in a Lifetime Movie of the week or a Hallmark Channel Movie of the month.
Next I tried reading "The Accidental Demon Slayer" and I couldn't even get passed the first chapter. The story telling style was just not grabbing me. I wasn't getting excited to see where this story was leading and so I gave up. A good book should grab you by the first or second chapter and this wasn't happening. I might have liked this book when I was about 14 or 15 years old but not today.
After reading other's comments about the other stories I decided it was time for me to just walk away because the other stories didn't sound any more promising than those first two books I tried to read and I was just be grateful that I didn't have to pay for these books for the were given to me.
If you are interested in reading a Supernatural story with a bit a of romance, humor, and a good mystery with lots of scary bad guys then you may interested in "The Southern Vampire Mysteries" series by Charlaine Harris. She writes well and knows how to grab your attention with some steamy love scenes, lots of quips, and a mystery that has some twist and turns.
As I've discovered over the years, some boxed sets are good and others not so much.
In all honesty, this particular collection left me wanting, except for Easy Bake Coven and the first in the set by Deanna Chase, Bourbon Street. Which is why I gave the set a 3 star rating. The aforementioned two are 4 stars.
To best describe my feelings on the other four, I could hardly wait to finish reading them and move on. I felt a definite divide between me, as a reader, and the characters and stories. Probably a personal flaw.
Some good ones and some not so good ones. I really loved Haunted on Bourbon Street by Deanna Chase and The Accidental Demon Slayer by Angie Fox as well as Girl’s Guide to Witchcraft by Mindy Klasky were a very nice read. Easy Bake Coven by Liz Schulte started off strong and then got too convoluted, but Carpe Demon by Julie Kenner and How to Date a Werewolf by Rose Pressey I couldn't read at all.
A lot of things have happened since. 2014 Was a very hard year for myself so all the reviews are showing up on the same date. I can't explain why they are, if the ratings are justice or accurate I can also not say when I truly read these. I'm just going to say 2014 on the same day added just to keep the year right if not the month...
This kept me on my toes. Some great reads, I laughed and cried with this read. If want romance and little paranormal with humor and a little adventure. This is the read for you.
