The small slope: A Novel. Set in the rural hills of the Eastern part of Nepal, the book revolves around the social lives of the characters who stay in the village of Damini Bhir. The story sets itself during the 10 year insurgency period of Nepal. The aakhyan revolves around the lives of different characters such as Lachhi, Kancho, Kanchi Damii, Nembang, Birman, Hangdima etc. The author presents the present and past stories of different characters by weaving them in a simple but artistic plot.

अन्तिम तिर आन्दोलनमा अनावश्यक नअल्झेको भए ४ तारा नै दिने मन थियो । मुद्दा लेख्ने क्रममा लेखकले कथा नै विर्से र फेरि चाल पाएर अन्तिममा ठेलठाल पारे कि झैं भयो । बाँकि पछि ।

This is my first read of 2022. I found this book as a combo of political and societal story.
At first, it was difficult to understand how the characters are introduced and the relation between characters, but later on the writer has done a good job in connecting those characters and the relation between them.
This book has composed all the aspects of Nepalese Society. Rajan Mukarung has developed this story of Eastern Nepal and he has used some Eastern slang and native language too often in the story.
Writer has expressed the voices of kiratis and he has connected story with the "Maoists Revolution" too.
The way it has ended I am dissatisfied with the writer. He has left some questions.
However, I enjoyed reading.
I became emotional too at some part of the story.
Writer deserves 4 star for his writing skill and the way he portrayed all the characters throughout the book.

I believe the writer follows the ideologies of left-wing and it is clearly reflected on this novel.
He had shown the social strata of Nepal on which he had succeeded to some extent.
I hadn't read any reviews about this book prior starting it. So, when I read it, to my surprise it turned to be political novel more. It exhibited the true picture of that era.
The writer had done some good research about the places and the characters that he had portrayed in this novel. He was able to show the time-lapse of changing society in terms of technology, entertainment, political revolution etc.
In the beginning, I felt like too many characters were introduced at once and it was so confusing. But it made sense later on when I went through pages after pages and the characters get interconnected. A lot of slang and jargon were used on the novel which made it hard to read and understand. However, I appreciate his effort because the writer was trying to make it more realistic.
Although it is an award winning novel but for me it is an average.

+२ जीवन सकाएर एक वर्ष भारतको पंजाब हुँदा पढेको थिएँ यो उपन्यास। र अहिले चै नाटक पनि तयारी हुँदै छ यसको भन्ने थाहा भएदेखि नाटक हेर्न गा बेला वाल्ल ट्वाल्ल पर्ने त हैन नि भनेर re-read गरेको। त्यो बेला झैँ अहिले नि लाग्ने यहीँ हो कि जति सशक्त छ सुरुदेखि मध्य भागसम्म --- राजनीति- जातीयपहिचानको आन्दोलनको चस्का, आफू लाई बलात्कार गर्नेलाई सजिलै माफी देको आदि जस्ता content - context चै अन्तिम अन्तिम तिर आएपछि नमिल्ने लाग्ने नै हो। राईहरुको संस्कार जस्तै: विवाहलाई केटी माग्दा दिने संवाद, जीवनका आयाम , गाम्ले परिवेशका दैनिकी, कर्म- धर्म- मर्म, मृत्यु संस्कार ले सोसियोलोजी पढेको मलाई अपिल गरेका थिए, नयाँ ज्ञान का साथ।
भाषाशैली , पुर्वीय नेपालको दृश्य वर्णन, मध्य भागमा आउँदा सम्मको फ्लो र निहाङ्ग राईको मृत्युपछि गरिने संस्कार र रुख ढालेपछि कथाको फ्लो मा गडबड भएको अहिले पनि उस्तै लाग्ने के। तर रिपिट हान्न चै मन लाग्ने नै छ है किताब मध्यमा सम्म त।
नाटकले यो कथानकलाई क्यारी प्रस्तुत गर्ने रहेछ हेर्न आतुर , उत्सुक छु म । बस्, त्यो बेला महिनादिन लाइया थ्यो , अहिले काम गर्दै, फिलिम हेर्दै, सकाएँ एक सातामा। समयको बर्बादी गरेँ भनेर त फील भएन हौँ फ़ेरि पनि।
अत: पुस्तकालयमा पढेको र आफैँ किताब किनेर पढ्दाको फरक चै छ है ---- मन छोएको , राम्रो line para page मार्क गर्दै पढ्न जो पाइन्छ मज्जाले।

दमिनी भीर ' भर्खरै सकेर सोची रहेछु। मैले देखे सम्मका, हिडे सम्मका भीरहरु परिकल्पनामा केही वोहोर दोहोर गरे जस्तो गरि रहेछ्न। समाज त्यस्तो समाज, जसको त्यति धेरै कुरा हुदैन हाम्रो समाजमा राजन जि ले कति मीठो शैलीमा पानामा उतारिदिनुभएको छ। परिकल्पना र यथार्थताको संगम अति सोचनिय बन्न पुगेको छ। एउटा युगको आवाज भन्न मैले बढी रुचाए कारण ती भीर हातले फोड्दा होस या अहिले ट्रकका लामा लामा पाङ्ग्रा हिड्दा होस बतासे डाडोले एउटा इतिहास पक्कै बोल्छ। युद्ध, प्रेम, दु:ख, गाउँको गाउलेपन, सहरको धुलाम्मे यथार्थ सबै छ। कति ठाउँ पढ्दै गर्दा नहराइने पनि होइन। जीवनको संगम पनि अनौठो छ र हामी सानू भूगोलमा छौ भन्ने अभास पनि कतै कतै ठोकी रहन्छ। एउटा प्रश्न सँग म हराइ रहेछु, बतासे डाडो जुन अहिले मैदान भैसकेको छ के त्यसले त्यही इतिहास बोक्छ त? खै! समयले तेस्को उत्तर देला। पुस्तकले धेरै कुरा बोकेको छ र २०६९को मदन पुरस्कारको सम्मान पुस्तकले गरेको छ।

उपन्यास राम्रै बनेको छ। विषयवस्तुको उठान पनि राम्रै छ। तर कथा भन्ने शैली अलि टेढोमेढो छ - लेखकले पाठकलाई अतित र वर्तमानमा टाइम ट्राभल गराइरहन्छन्।
यस उपन्यासका सम्बन्धमा मेरा केही कुरा:
- लेखकले claim गरेजस्तै यस उपन्यासमा पुरै समुदायलाई नायक बनाएर देखाइएको छ न कि एउटा व्यक्तिलाई।
- कथा भन्न सुरू गर्ने तरिका र शैली ठीक छ। कथाले पाठकलाई तुरून्तै Grip गरिहाल्छ।
- टाईसन दाईको नेवारी बोलीलाई साह्रै मज्जाले टपक्कै टिपिएको छ।
- पारूमाको विवाहको मिस्ट्री सबभन्दा रोचक छ।
तर केही कुराहरूले उपन्यासको रस भङ्ग गरेका छन्:
- हाङ्दीमासँग विवाह गर्ने लाहुरेले वाक्य नै पिच्छे 'अगर कुछ' को प्रयोग गरेको पटक्कै सुहाएन। त्यसले हरेक वाक्यलाई अस्वभाविक बनाएको छ।
- अन्तिम तिर त च्याट मात्रै पो छ जुन किताब भरीकै सबभन्दा अनावश्यक कुरा हो।
यस उपन्यासका सम्बन्धमा मेरा केही कुरा:

"Before reading 'Damini Bhir,' I had high expectations. The novel starts off interestingly, but gradually becomes irritating, causing you to lose interest. In many places, the sentence structure is completely wrong, and the language seems off track.
After reading about 60%, I finally gave up. I couldn't bear it any longer.
This piece of work is absolutely overrated, and I wonder how it managed to win the prestigious Madan Puraskar."

दमिनी भिर बाट सुरु भएको कथा दमिनी भिर मै गएर अन्त्य भयो ।
समय बदलियो व्यवस्था बदलियो तर व्यवस्था बदल्न संघर्ष र युद्ध गर्ने आम नागरिक को अवस्था जस्ता को त्यस्तै छ । कति आशा थिए होलान् व्यवस्था बदलिए पछि आफू अनि आफ्नो समाज को मुहार राम्रो को लागि फेरिन्छ भनेर तर आशा आकाशको फल आँखा तरी मर जस्तै भयो ।
लेखाइ अलि ठाडो भएको हो कि खै के हो सुरु मा पढ्दा अलि के नमिलेको के नमिलेको जस्तै हुने रहेछ । अरु धेरै नेपाली किताब भन्दा अलि फरक शैली को लेखाइ भएर नी हुनसक्छ ।

Starting was great and i enjoyed overall. However, the writer deviates from the main story out of nowhere in middle disturbing the flow of story.

September 21, 2016Actually I did not read this book, but I listen from Ujyalo 99 Network. It is interesting book , good job has been don by Rajan Mukarung, which won the Madan Puruskar. I like to read in paper again when I get back home......

The starting was good, but what happened in between? Did the writer get lost, did his personal ideologies come in the way? Great job on portraying the local surroundings of Eastern Nepal for which the writer deserves praise.

For me the book is overrated. It was interesting at the beginning but it slides down slowly.
