As I continue to read the wonderful classics within this book series, I have to remind myself that they are for the younger children when I ultimately go to review them. For me the books skip so much of the character development and juicy plot for my adult mind. I love immersive texts but for kids in third grade it is spot on. This book had me racing through the pages and the drama, I read it within an hour because it was so intense and exciting. Another wonderful book I can't wait to read to my third graders and to my two boys when they are older. It was so good I plan on reading the original adult classic.
I purchased a used copy to donate to local schools in need of library books. Before giving it away, I wanted to read it. Since first listening to the musical in 2015, I have been a fan and have listened/sang it repeatedly throughout the years and I always was a little curious of how the original story went. Of course, the musical makes changes. Some of the changes I understand to make the musical work and other changes I do not approve (i.e., the musical ending would have been way more meaningful if it had stuck to Gaston Leroux's ending). The book is haunting. Readers will be moved. Someday I hope to sit down and read the unabridged version.
As far as this abridged version designed for a younger audience...Diane Namm did a great job keeping the story's integral elements and yet staying age-appropriate. This version is part of a series called "Classic Starts" that include other classics, such as Swiss Family Robinson and Little Women. I would recommend this one to parents/educators who wish to introduce youngsters to the lovely world of classic literature.
Humans and their everlasting search for love. It was simple drama, compelling, delightful, tragic. There is some clumsy pacing, especially in the first half: awkwardness, a rushed rhythm. Yet, in my view, these do not deal a fatal blow to the experience. Overall the work is ultimately worthy of reading; but oh, the second half. It is simple. I cannot claim I’ve never encountered anything quite like it, and if you're someone who has experienced two or three works with these themes and in this style (in any medium), you will see familiar elements. Still, the second half of the story held me seated. it was truly a magnificent experience.
This is a classic starter, so it was a really fast read. Yes, I feel sorry for Erik- the phantom, the angel of music. It’s sad that he wasn’t loved because of how he looked. But, that does not excuse any of his behavior afterward. Lucky for Christine, because she showed love to him, he set her free and let her go off with her true love.
Did I accidentally buy the children's version of The Phantom of the Opera? Yes, yes I did. Did I refund it? No, not at all. I sat down & read this bad boy. The fact that I'm 24 became irrelevant - I enjoyed it. Since it's rewritten for children, I'm of course rating it accordingly. Absolutely captivating for the children's book that it is. Great characters, great mystery, love them grey characters - Finished the book in one sitting (granted 160 pages is quite short, especially with its giant font). Accessibly written for its age group, and yet still managed to make me laugh and interested for my own age. Love it, and now I'm gonna go watch the musical because of it.
I initially gave this a 4.75 because... ...(SPOILER)... ...I was confused about what the father could have meant by sending the Angel of Music (since we know it's not Erik by the end), but after some research into other readers' opinions, I'm assuming he just meant it like a fairytale. I think it would have been best that this was clarified better as I felt frustrated with what I saw as a slight plothole, but this new interpretation is enough for me to give it full 5 stars at least.
This is yet another great entry from the CLASSIC STARTS series! I had read the original novel, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, when I was in grad school, during the mid-1990s. Finding this condensed version was a delightful surprise! It was a quick read, and the simplified plotline helped me make sense of the two movie versions of PHANTOM OF THE OPERA that I have seen -- the classic from 1943 and the musical from the early 2000s.
This bittersweet story of unrequited love and the barriers that we all build to "protect" ourselves from being hurt is a timeless tale, highly recommended from readers of all ages.
Legend of a fearsome ghost roaming the passageways below the opera house become astonishingly real in this greeting and mysterious tale set in nineteenth-century Paris. Christine, a beautiful singer, and her friend Raoul find themselves pulled into the darkest corners of the theatres -and of the human's heart . you too will find yourself captivate of the suspenses and horror of this incredible story of madness, ambition and revenge .
This book is about a singer named Christine. She and her friend Raoul know the stories of the fearsome ghost that roams the hallways below the opera house. They don't believe it until suddenly it all becomes too real for them.
Just like all of the Classic Starts books, it is a great read for a young reader. The language used is not above a 3rd to 4th grade level, so it is very easy to follow.
This is one of the most exciting books I’ve read. It is called:The Phantom Of The Opera. This is a summary of the book :There are these legends of this ghost haunting the opera in paris, france. In The book I liked that it was an adventure .One of the characters I liked is a guy called : the foreign stranger.I liked this character because he is very smart and nice.
It was a really nice and easy read when i realized that it was for young readers, so of course a lot of the actual plot and darkness was not really there and it was a really fast read. I am planning on reading the real adult classic because this wasn’t enough for me.
I think it’s a good book for starters. It summarized the whole book storyline and includes some charming illustration, also some questions for discussion starters.
Don’t judge the book by its cover lol it is very cool I thought it be very boring but when I have read it has a lot of mysteries and there will be love story and kidnapping .
