Let's start this review off with a big WOW! The Undead series is nothing short of amazing. I read the entire thing in a mere four days and was sad to see it end. It shocked me to find the series has yet to be picked up.

RR Haywood spins a tale of Mr. Howie, a night shift grocery worker as he fights off the wretched undead and meets some pretty awesome people along the way. Howie first teams up with Dave, a fellow co-worker at the store. Dave is a killing machine, methodical and devoid of social grace, it came as no shock when he revealed having Asbergers. His dry demeanor mixed with Howie's witty humor makes for some pretty deadpan comedy.

Joined by rookie soldiers Cookey, Blowers and Nick the comedy continues as they each dish out witty barbs. Each character is fully developed and believable. It's evident in the writing that a lot of thought went into creating them and the dynamic they bring to the group. Along the way, many more people are introduced. I won't go into their details, since that's the fun part about reading, but I will say they were each written just as well as the others.

Despite the never ending battle to survive, Howie and company continue in their mission to secure a safe haven for refugees. Destruction never ceasing to knock down their doors, the action is non-stop.

These aren't your garden variety zombies. They are a collective, pushed onward by an infection portrayed as an entity all it's own. The infection morphs and evolves in it's single minded goal to wipe out humanity. The undead aren't interested in eating its prey, it's only desire to spread the infection.

There are zombies of all shapes and sizes. Slow and lumbering, fast and vicious, thinking and plotting, seducing, vengeful...you name it, they've got it. The one thing they have in common is the red eyes. Lucky for the eyes or survivors would be completely fubar. The infection itself is original. It allows what could have ended up long and drawn out to keep me on the edge of my seat and never bored.

The Undead series is an ever changing, exciting work of fiction that will keep readers glued to the pages from start to finish. With it's terror, humor, unique story and likable characters, it is sure to be a huge hit with the masses.

Important note: This series is not for the feint of heart. In addition to the blood and guts, there is a lot of bad language (most of it pretty hilarious) and a few sexually explicit scenes that may be shocking to some. I appreciate the authors show of restraint as he did not harp on the uncomfortable moments. Oh, and spiders...lest we not forget the spiders. Haywoods description of poor Paula as she is stalked by an eight legged terror had me squirming in my seat and making noises of fear and disgust, followed promptly by a full body check and scan of my surroundings to ensure I, too, was not about to be attacked.

I really liked the POV from a dog. It was quite sad reading her refer to her owners as her pack leaders and then having to kill them when they turned in order to protect a child. It was interesting to see how The Infection couldn't take her over, despite how many zombies she killed. I felt sorry for her every time she protected people and then they left her.

Paco was a new character, and I didn't really like him to begin with. He was arrogant and self-centred and took advantage of anyone and everyone whenever he could. He was nice to the dog when they met, though, so he earned a few brownie points for that 😂. He showed a lot of growth throughout the book, though, and by the end of it, I actually didn't mind him.

The ending was good. I liked the massive fight, and I'm curious about the dog's reaction to Dave and vice versa. I have a feeling that they're going to bond well.

The pacing was a little slow at times, but that might be because I kept wanting to return to Howie's POV.

Day 11: Paco.

This might be my favourite instalment of this series yet.

I initially had a real issue with the narrator's American accent for Paco, but I got used to it pretty quickly. My view of Paco had done a complete 180 by the end of the book; I appreciated that his responses to the outbreak were what I assume the majority of us would be like in that situation. Lucy was a bit weird though, omg.

I'd already listened to the deleted scene that was free from Audible (and is how I got into this series in the first place), so I knew Meredith II was going to appear at some point. Her story line did not disappoint.

The third POV was from Howie & co, who were tasked with getting supplies for the fort. Some great character building in this book and lots of camaraderie scenes. Side note: How likely is it that Dave would know 'We Run This' by Missy Elliot? Great tune though.

This one seemed a bit of a fill in. I use the audiobook and really wish the same narrator had been used. The first one had the voices down and I really struggle with the new one. It is interesting to think we may get a glimpse as to the origin of the tale. It does take a little darker tone with Howie. More battles and less arguing would have been easier but don't get me wrong, this series is my favorite "zombie" series.

This review is for part 11 of the audiobook, not day 11.

This instalment was an interesting one from the perspective of character building. The strain is starting to take its toll on the group. In terms of plot, the most interesting part was the sub-story, which hints that we might find out how it all started...

This was great. Love the characters and the way the zombie virus keeps mutating. Now we have a hero dog too - fab! The ONLY reason I didn’t give 5 stars is that the book has so many typos - needs a good proofreader to sort it out.

The Undead Day Eleven - Audio Book

I have been going through these books every couple of days now for the last few weeks and i have been enjoying the progress of the group so far.

** Spoilers **

The new narrator was frustrating, especially the voices of Dave who now sounds like he is dimwitted which can't be further from the truth. Paula now sounds like Julian clarey and blowers has a deep voice which doesent suit the traits of his character i believe. I persevered with the book and thankfully the story takes on the perspective of two new people so hearing them was not as difficult as hearing people you have been listening to for 10 books with the same voices.

** update ** - after listing to several more books it is clear to me that the new narrator is far better than the last one, he performs the book rather than just reading it with gusto. By book 13 Dave's voice has been adjusted and is far better now, and Paula's voice is now more appropriate. the voice used for Paula at first is used later in book 23 (the fort) for a person called Pam and is a far more appropriate voice for her. I think after listening to every single book i would now struggle to go back to books 1-10 because it would feel like a real step backwards.

I liked the way this book finally allowed the darkness of the past two weeks to finally take its toll on our main group. Their lack of emotional outpouring and grief was starting to feel like a big plot hole begging to be explored so I was glad it was finally addressed. the closest we came to this was Debbie's meltdown at the fort.

one thing which i find so frustrating in this series is the children, the whining of the children is difficult to listen to, they are poorly written and enough to make me "skip 1min" to bypass the frustrating repetitive nature of them......kids ask questions...we get it......no need to have a kid ask 50 questions repetitively to drill home the point.

This book though…Meeting Bear and Paco and having their stories intertwine with the lads…I loved it. At first Paco ground my gears but I grew to perhaps, not quite love him and his ways, but grow fond of him…these books are little insights into the human condition and Paco was flawed…terribly…but it made him endearing by the book’s end. I loved being inside Bear’s head, working out what she was doing and learning new ways to see the infection through her eyes, learning how ‘pack’ dynamics are fused and broken.
Our lads(and Laini) are amazing as always…not always right, but forever a team. I love how they are now the ‘go to’ group to get things done…I have new songs to look up now and an urge to make my own playlists for the group/books/series!
I also love how Howie has grown….comparing him to Paco- man of the hour/big hot shot and I laugh! I want to be on Howie’s team! Howie, Dave and co grow with each book and their camaraderie is enviable…love them!
I adored the action, the humour (fart jokes during battle…nothing beats them ;) ) and the sadness…all were well executed and each book just keeps on getting better!
Kit additions:
Bear (I think she’s the best tbf)
Pitchfork
Whip ;)
Clarence’s foot…

The first half of this book felt like a filler for Howie and Co. but it served well in setting the scene of the fort.

Paco is the definition of flight when placed in a fight or flight situation. Honestly, its probably a more realistic reaction to an apocalypse then what we’ve seen before, but it does make him a hard character to like!

For me, this book was less enjoyable than the previous ones.
