The Haunted Museum #1

The Titanic Locket

Rate this book
Don't touch anything in The Haunted Museum!

It looks like the high point of Samantha's spring vacation is going to be a glimpse of a cute boy she sees at The Haunted Museum in England. She and her sister, Jessica, and their parents are taking a cruise on the Titanic 2, a replica of the original Titanic, and there's not even wifi! At least the Titanic exhibit at the Haunted Museum had wax figures and beautiful jewels to look at.

But from their first day, Samantha and Jessica notice strange things happening. Their cabin number keeps changing. There are creepy scratching sounds coming from between the walls. And a locket that Jess opened at the museum seems to be . . . following them.

Is the locket haunted? Or could it be the ship itself? Are there actors in costume walking about the ship . . .or could they be ghosts? Why is Sam's sister calling her by another name? Samantha will have to unravel the threads tying her and her sister to the past, or they could go down with the ship!

Suzanne Weyn grew up in Williston Park, Long Island, New York. She has three sisters and a brother. As a girl, she was very interested in theatre and in reading. Louisa May Alcott was her favorite author, but she also read every Sherlock Holmes story. Suzanne lived pretty close to the ocean and going to Jones Beach was one of her favorite activities. Even today, if she goes too long without seeing the ocean, she starts feeling restless.

Suzanne now lives in upper New York State with her husband, two teen daughters and Abby the cat. Her house is at the edge of the woods and is nearly 200 years old. She graduated from State University of New York at Binghamton and received her master's degree from Pace University. She teaches part-time at City College in New York.

Suzanne's other books for Simon Pulse include South Beach Sizzle, a romantic comedy written with Diana Gonzalez. Her novels for the Simon Pulse line "Once Upon a Time" are The Night Dance: A Retelling of the Twelve Dancing Princesses, Water Song: A Retelling of the Frog Prince, and The Crimson Thread: A Retelling of Rumplestiltskin. She very much enjoys rethinking these classic tales from an original point of view, always looking for the real psychological underpinning of the story. Suzanne is currently doing revisions on her fourth book in the line, which will be coming in 2009.

Suzanne's other recent novels are include The Bar Code Tattoo (2004) and its sequel, The Bar Code Rebellion (2006). The Bar Code Tattoo was selected by the American Library Assoc. (ALA) as a 2005 Quick Pick for Reluctant Young Adult Readers and was a 2007 Nevada Library nominee for Best Young Adult Fiction. It is currently translated into German and was nominated for the 2007 Jugenliteraturpreis for Young People's Literature.

I feel like it had a lot of untapped potential. It was too focused around ~stereotypical crushes? boy drama? girls losing their shit over a guy they just met?~ and was irritating.
Cool premise though.

I loved this book. Each chapter kept you going with susspense. I wanted too keep reading more and more each chapter. One of my favorite parts was when Kitty the dog came running and pushed Sally Kelly to the floor and he was just on top of her keeping her pinned down.My second favriote part was when Madeame Valenska chanted the spirts to be gone at the end. She said it like this and I quote "Sprit of Alice Littlefeild, depart!Spirit of Matilda LittleFeild, depart!" and for Sally Kelly the same thing. You might be wondering who these people are if you were too lazy to read the book or you didn't feel like it. Alice and Matilda they are twins who died in 1912 on the first Titanic who still wanted revenge. Samantha and Jessie two sisters that look like twins but were born a year apart they are sisters as well as best friends they touched some thing that they weren't supposed to and now they are going to "pay the price." Sally Kelly another girl who is on the cruse and touched some thing she wasn't supposed to but the gost her has taken her body and is try to settle unfinished bissness with Alice and Mitilda. Jhon and Jhon both of them have nice young ladies who want him but ghost Jhon who is married to Sally Kelly. Alice, Mitilda, and Sally Kelly are fighting over him, and before the cruse is over humans and ghost have to reslove and get over fudes before its too late.

This book was ridiculously creepy! I had to finish it even though I was super tired because I couldn't leave off in the middle of the horror. I don't think it would be too great for the average upper elementary student because nightmares would ensue! Even when I finished I was still creeped out. It was definitely a page turner and a clever idea, but it's only suitable for fans of true horror stories.

The book was an adventurous tale with a spiral of horror and paranormal experience, which delivered an edge-seat thrill to me.
The flow of the story was addressed smoothly with unexpected twists and turns.
I appreciate the research behind the book about the references of the original guest list of the famous Titanic, The book is totally YA category and it is a good read for young readers who are looking for thrilling book experience.

I recently read this during a quiet shift at work, and while it was quite a short book, it certainly gave me the creeps! I was by myself and was jumping at every noise!

This is a book based around two sisters going on the “Titanic 2”, with their parents. As the intended audience is 8+, the story focuses more on the sisters, with adults only making a brief appearance.

The sisters discover an innocent looking locket in a “haunted” museum which also has a Titanic exhibition. Despite the “do not touch” signs, they disobey and unleash something equivalent to Gozer, as soon as they’re on the new Titanic.

This is where it definitely steps into the Twilight Zone, and you don’t want to be reading this in a near enough empty office! I very much doubt I would let an 8 year old read this, just of how creepy it is. I’m far beyond the intended audience, and I’m still feeling creeped out by it!

It’s quite an interesting story, however I don’t think I would read the rest of the series - I only bought this because it featured a Titanic storyline. It’s quite simplistic and the sisters can be a bit bratty at times.

I have read another book of Suzanne’s (Distant Waves - also Titanic related) and she does have a good way of weaving an intriguing story. I just wouldn’t give it to young kids. I think the audience should be older, as I feel that this would scare any youngsters.

The Haunted Museum: The Titanic Locket by Suzanne Weyn is an amazing beginning to a great new series for young readers! What begins as a simple family vacation for sisters, Samantha and Jessica, quickly becomes an action packed mystery complete with frightening spirits who have returned to the Titanic 2 to take care of some "unfinished business". But will this become the end of Samantha and Jessica? Will they share the same awful fate as the passengers of the original Titanic? Weyn has created an amazing suspense-filled story with unexpected twists and turns, as well as heart-pounding spookiness, that left me guessing until the very end. Filled with a bit of mystery, romance, creepy ghosts, and intriguing history, this story is sure to capture the imagination of any young reader. An excellent story and fast-paced thriller to encourage young readers to further explore the history of the Titanic and its array of passengers. I loved this book and look forward to the next installment, The Haunted Museum #2: The Phantom Music Box to be released August 26th, 2014. FIVE stars!

A Haunted Adventure

The Haunted Museum is part of Scholastic's Hauntings book series. I already have another book from this group in my pile.

Jessica and Samantha are on the Titanic 2 - a replica ship. The girls even get to dress in clothes from 1912.

The story contained some historical information on the original Titanic - it's layout, passengers, and occurrences as the ship was sinking. I personally was hoping for more, but I feel middle grade readers will find it just right. The mystery is fun. There are creepy ghosts and a cute boy. Perfect. More info on the ship's grandeur and it's movement through the water would have added to the story's atmosphere - sadly these were not presented.

Thank you Scholastic and NetGalley for the review copy of this book.

I feel this would be a nice title for female readers who enjoy historical settings. The ghost scenes are not too scary. It may entice young readers to research the Titanic - a good thing.

This book was just okay, we follow two sisters, Samantha and Jessica, who are going with their parents on a cruise that's supposed to be an exact replica of the Titanic (why is this a good idea?)

So before they embark on this trip they go to a Haunted Museum nearby and well, they do exactly what you shouldn't do at museums which is touch things. As they go on their cruise they start noticing strange things happening and now they must figure out how to make them stop.

There are some creepy parts but overall it's not entirely convincing. The plot moves really slowly at first and near the end, everything just wraps up with few complications. I wished that it was longer but I do understand that it's supposed to be fourth-grade reading level so it's okay in that sense.

For Halloween it was a great way to set up a bit of the mood of this weekend, I'll be reading Book 2 in the upcoming days as well.

The Haunted Museum is about two girls named Samantha and Jessica that go on a cruise called Titanic 2. This ship is a remake of the original Titanic. On the ship, they discover haunting secrets about the past. I liked the book because the plot added a supernatural mystery that made the book more exciting.

I read this 4th-grade-level book solely because I’m a Titanic buff. Good story for that age group, with some actual facts about the Titanic and its passengers scattered throughout. But, gotta say: it was downright scary! I’d be up several nights in a row, afraid to sleep, if I’d read this in 4th grade.

This month i read the haunted museum the titanic locket. Although it was a very short and simple book it was still on a high level of words if that makes sense. I liked this book because it actually made me feel scared. Sometimes it is hard for me to feel something when reading but this book did get me scared. My least favorite characters were defintly jessicas and samanthas parents, the sisters both tried to tell them all the scary stuff that was going on but they simply brushed it off like it was no big deal. But my favorite character was ¨kitty¨ the dog, he is one of the reasons why the sisters and the souls are saved. There wasnt many good qoutes, but something that stuck out to me was when jessica said, ¨theres a haunted museum not far from the dock in new york.¨ i liked it because you know that the adventures are not over with them and the museum.

The Haunted Museum: The Titanic Locket by Suzanne Weyn is a mysterious, interesting, horror story. There is a series for this book, but this is the first book I have read from the series..The first few chapters I have read, I was so interested in what is going to happen next. What I really liked about this book is that one of the characters, Samantha, is imagining real people and things that the Titanic had in the past. For example, she had imagined the ship sinking. Another thing that I liked about this book is that Samantha and her sister Jessica both “fell in love” with the same boy. It’s really funny how they both think that that boy likes them. If you really like, mysterious, horror, romance stories I recommend this book to you!

This 198 page quick read is a big disappointment. Obviously written for Titanic fans, it is low on Titanic info, and the ghost story and hauntings are treated as if evil spirits. The main characters are sisters, Samantha and Jessica, and they argue over clothes and a boy. The family, mom, dad, and the sisters sign up for a cruise trip on a replica Titanic. Their parents alternate between being overly involved and distant, not exactly a good role model for young readers. The hauntings and ghost story is about evil spirits and this occult emphasis, including a “medium” means that many parents, especially Christian, will not want to encourage their kids to read this. Sorry Titanic fans. Give this one a pass.

198 pages. This story features 12 year olds going on a ship called Titanic II for a cruise on the same route as the first Titanic ship. They visit a museum with Titanic items in England. The main character is interested in a fifteen year old buy in a gift shop. A strange woman asks the girls, "Dead or alive?" and they answer, "We're alive." The strange woman answer back, "Don't be so sure..." She was tricking them but...creepy...whatever. YUCK! Skip this one...and obviously NOT Recommended.

Wow - a kids book has not been this great in a while! I saw this and it instantly got my attention. I love anything haunted and esp anything to so with the Titanic so I had high hopes for this one! Normally kids books are written down to kids and are not the best to read but this was not! I thought the writting was good, the story got me from beginning to end, the charactera had movement and it just was just a good book all together! I loved it! Such a great read for any age! I cannot wait to review it on my channel (kwellsbooks) and my blog! As well as I cannot wait to get the second book!!

This would be a really entertaining book for young readers (and older ones if you’re like me and enjoy these types of adventure books.. 😅).

Events are interesting, and it doesn’t stall or give too much unnecessary details/description, just enough to paint a picture. There is always something happening, and you just keep turning pages to see what happens next. It’s an easy read for sure, I read it in two sittings.

I especially enjoyed the details about the Titanic and the concept of old untold stories of its passengers, that storyline certainly kept me intrigued.

Honestly I just picked this book up because it's been sitting on my shelf for over half a decade and I'm way past this level of book now, but I didn't want to just get rid of the book without reading it, I did buy it new after all. I was not expecting it to actually be pretty good, especially for a elementary level chapter book. it was more suspenseful than most horror movies to me. It really keeps you questioning everything that happens, whether it's real or supernatural. I don't think the whole fighting over a boy thing was necessary, but it tied in well so it's not so bad I guess.

Read for #MarchMysteryMadness

I really enjoyed this one! It was pretty creepy for a middle grade book, I think. Since I was reading as an adult, the scarier portions didn't scare me so much as keep me really interested in what was going on. I had a hunch about a few things, which turned out to be correct, but this was still a very enjoyable read. I will definitely be looking to read the rest of the volumes in this series.

Quick read with my son. He brought home this book from his school library because he was interested. It was a nice and simple read with a bit of mystery and excitement. Had us guessing what could possibly happen next with their luck. I made it an educational read with him by explaining the titanic and taking a look at pictures for him to understand the boats similarities.

I liked this book; it was about a family that goes to a museum and the to a replica ship of the Titanic.
Strange things start to occur and a wrong that was committed must be made right for everything to go back to the way it was. Travel along in the exciting story!

The book was very fake and unexplained. Yes, it is a ghost story, but every event that happened was cheesy and poorly plotted. The only reason this review doesn't have one star is four the ending, it was better than the rest of the book but still not the best.

Great quick read!

This was a really good story. It kept me guessing as to what would happen next and how it would end. Also enjoyed that there was nothing explicit in it. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a clean, twisty who-done-it.
