Full of great practical, biblically-grounded advice. I especially appreciate the counsel he gives focused around your own heart and priorities as a preacher. He gives good steps and exhortations for growing in technical proficiency, but the weight of the book is entirely on guarding your heart from distractions and devoting yourself to faithfully handling God's Word.

Recommend to preachers and those who aspire to preach regularly, especially if you're young in the work.

There are so many books on preaching that it's hard to imagine why we would need another one, but then I read a little book like this and I am so glad that it was written. H.B. Charles has done all preachers a great service by giving us this straightforward, practical and God-honoring book "on preaching."

Many of the chapters here are what you would expect in a preaching book – how to use illustrations; writing manuscripts; developing an outline; praying before you preach, etc. But there are some unique insights here as well, like what to do when you're a guest preacher (ch.26), aiming for consistency rather than greatness in the pulpit (ch.22), and being careful to "guard the dignity of the pulpit" (ch.23).

But what is best about this book is Charles' skill at saying profound things in a simple way. For instance:
* "The people in the pew may not believe what I am saying. But I want it to be evident that I believe it." (46).
* "Bible exposition is an acquired taste. Before people experience it, they don't know what they are missing. But once they do, they will not be satisfied with anything else." (58).
* "Passion is never a substitute for clarity. Volume is not a substitute for content. Emotion is not a substitute for conviction." (95).
* "The One who guides the preparation of the message governs the presentation of it. And He has the right to edit your sermon as you preach it!" (105)
* "Don't strive to preach great sermons. Strive to preach consistently good sermons. And, every now and then, one will be great." (117)
* "Your people should learn more about Christ from your sermons than they learn about you." (123).
* "The message of the gospel is magnificent. The messengers of the gospel are not." (150).

Stuff like that. Doesn't matter if you are just beginning to preach, or if you have been preaching your whole life. Read this book.

Very direct, and very practical. Absolutely grounded, biblically. A bit distracting was the amount of overlap and repeated material in subsequent chapters---a result of this book being a collection of topical writings by H.B. Charles, I believe. I was especially helped by the chapter on writing a sermon calendar and the chapters with practical tips on delivering sermons.

Often short books did not need to be written and long books are way too bloated. This book is short, but concise. It could have easily been another 150 pages, but it has completely trimmed the fat. This might be one of my favorite preaching books that I have read. It is focused on the practical and covers such a wide range of topics related to preaching. It is challenging and encouraging for the seasoned preached. Yet it is accessible and helpful for the new preacher. I would recommend this to anyone preaching, or thinking about preaching.

Helpful. Very practical. Simple and straightforward with some moments of striking insight. For me, the style made the book read somewhat like a devotional - quick, choppy, heavily practical with less substance. I’d definitely recommend this work! Just didn’t love the reading experience, if that makes sense. 3.5 stars.

Very good book to study Homiletics. Practical advise with a conservative view. Great resource for teaching basic Homiletic lessons to young ministers because of the brevity and layout of subpoints within chapters. Good, easy read

My Review:

Being the wife a mother of two ministers, one being my husband the other my daughter, I am hear to tell you that preaching is something that they both take very seriously. It isn't something that they go into with a calm reserve. It's just the beginning for both of them but they would never dream of making it an entertainment hour or decide to copy someone's sermon. These are two of the subjects that the author addresses and he advises against both of them.

I was excited for the chance to review this book because I needed to find something having to do with the subject matter in order to encourage and uplift a man that I know struggles with his calling. He is a great man and he has a hard time facing the fear of public speaking. It takes a lot of courage to go up to a pulpit and preach. There are some many factors that play into it and it takes supernatural strength to accomplish this feat.

My husband is now the proud owner of this book. He reads much like a devotional and says that the authors insight has been very helpful to him and has put a lot into perspective for him. Mr. Charles has provided a lot of commentary about his own lessons this process and the things he has learned. I enjoyed the book and it can be real helpful to seminary students or veteran ministers.

**Disclosure** This book was sent to me free of charge for my honest review from the author.

Several years ago I purchased three copies of this book. One copy was for my future son-in-law (who is in ministry), one for my son (who is studying for ministry), and one for myself. I finally decided to read this book. I'm so glad I did!

This is not an in-depth study guide on effective preaching. It is full of short, pithy chapters (30 chapters in only 156 pages). Nevertheless, the book is full of practical and personable suggestions and advice when it comes to preaching. I don't know the author. In matter of fact, I have never heard him preach before. However, I came away feeling like I had just sat down with the author and heard him speak directly to me for a few hours in a very practical manner.

The author breaks the subject matter into three sections:

1. Preparation for Preaching
2. The Practice of Preaching
3. Points of Wisdom for Preaching

Within these sections, one will find all sorts of practical pointers and exhortation. I felt like I was encouraged, exhorted, and challenged regarding my preaching throughout the entire book.

The overall tenor of the book is that a preacher must be humble and true to his calling to preach the Word. I loved the spirit of the book. Charles gives timely illustrations from his own life (he began preaching as a teenager) of how others (his dad and other preachers) influenced him. He shares stories of things he wished he had not done and things he was glad he has done in the field of preaching. This is a refreshing book and one I highly recommend both to seasoned preachers and those training for ministry.

Here are a few snippets of sections/sentences that I enjoyed:

"The Word of God is pregnant with truth. The more you study it, the more it gives birth to new insights into God's revelation. You can never exhaust the riches of Scripture. We will always be students of the Word, never experts. If you think you have mastered the Scriptures, please get out of the pulpit before you do great harm."

"The importance of preaching rests in its content, not in its function. Our preaching is not the reason the Word works. The Word is the reason our preaching works."

"Ultimately, there are only two ways to preach - by exposition or by imposition. Either your preaching explains the God-intended meaning of the text or it sinfully imposes human speculation onto the text."

"My father used to say that seminary just shines shoes. Guys who shine shoes do not make the shoes. They just shine them. If you don't bring a pair of shoes, they don't have anything to work with. Likewise, seminary does not make preachers. It doesn't make pastors."

"Do not waste your time on any school that is not totally committed to the Bible...it is better to attend a small school where you will learn the Bible than to have degree from some major institution that teaches liberal theology."

"True leaders are learners. Even if school is not for you now, keep studying. We really have no excuses these days for ignorance."

"Few church members understand what it takes to produce a good sermon. You must educate them."

"You may be the pastor of your congregation. But you are not the only person of influence the Lord has placed in the body life of that church."

"I want to bring out of the text what's in the text, rather than imposing my ideas on it...the sermon is not my message. The congregation members are not my people. And the preaching moment is not my time. I am on assignment as a herald for the King."

"Just because a man reads, quotes, and talks about the Bible in his sermon does not mean he is preaching the Word. Many use the Word of God as a springboard to proclaim a self-styled, man-centered message that actually opposes the Word of God in the name of preaching."

"You abuse the Scriptures when you preach the right truth from the wrong text."

"Build the sermon around the text, not illustrations. The illustrations should not get more attention than the text. You want the text to speak loud and clear...Let the text guide the sermon. And don't let a good story lead you astray from your assignment to preach the Word."

H.B. Charles has been preaching since he was a teenage boy. In this book, he offers insights on everything involved in the preaching task. From how to advice for sermon outlines to illustrations he packs a lot of content in 30 or so chapters. Although the chapters read more like blog posts (which they may have been at some point), he gets to the point and moves along.

He does repeat himself at some points, but they are matters worth repeating. I would suggest this for any new preacher or any one who preaches and teaches who needs reminders on the what and how of the preaching task.

A great preaching resource. It is not the best preaching book I have read, nor the first I’d recommend to a friend, but I certainly benefited from it. The book is broken into 30 short chapters, and most chapters are broken down further into 1-2 paragraph applications of the chapter’s topic. In this way the book almost becomes reference material for when you would like some advice on a specific area. Losing your voice a lot? He has a chapter with several tips to help with that. Have trouble writing conclusions? There’s a chapter for that. I’d recommend it to anyone looking for a resource to sharpen their edge with small doses of encouragement that can easily be added into a busy schedule.

Great book to strengthen my pulpit ministry. A lot of practical wisdom that can be applied immediately. Most notably, helpful reminders about the significance of personal devotion in ministry and how it affects everything, including the pulpit. HB Charles captured my attention with anecdotes and personal reflections. I will be reading this again next year!

Great book on preaching. Covers a multitude of topics in regard to preaching with pastoral wisdom on each. Easily digestible, engaging and practical.

The book is short, straightforward and doesn’t over labor any point, except one… write out a sermon manuscript!! (Even if you don’t take it with you) lol.

Excellent little book that I will certainly reference back to.

For any man becoming a pastor who needs a simple "playbook" for preaching, this is a MUST-have. I love the practicality of this book because it offers clear, practical insights for the everyday pastor. Not all situations/ministries are the same, but this is a good book for learning how to preach and to establish good habits from a master of preaching.

A very solid book on the nuts and bolts of preparing to preach and preaching. There were several themes that stuck out. First, he emphasized prayer throughout the book, which was an encouragement to me. We are to be men of prayer and you can tell for him prayer is not on the edges, but at the center. Second, he focused on clarity. Be clear he said over and over again. This emphasis on clarity shows he is interested in feeding the sheep instead of impressing the sheep. Third, I liked his idea of writing out a sermon manuscript, but taking nothing into the pulpit except his Bible. I have never done that, but I will try it in the future. Finally, he has several chapters that other books on preaching don't, such as how to be a guest preacher, avoiding indecent illustrations, how to prepare a sermon calendar, and how to be an associate minister.

There were a few drawbacks. He does not spend very much time on the body of the sermon. He probably felt this was covered in more in-depth books on preaching. At times, he is a cliched. He also repeats himself a bit, though my guess is that this comes from many of the chapters originally being blog posts.

For a young preacher like myself this book was helpful in keeping the target, faithfully handling and preaching God's Word, in my sights.

Each year, Baptist pastor H.B. Charles, Jr. goes through what he calls a "preaching crisis." It has been during these times of discouragement that he spends extra time reading and reflecting on what it means to preach the Word of God. These times of reflection lead to these thirty sketches, which in turn became the book, "On Preaching."

It's not a technical, step-by-step textbook on formulating sermons. Rather, it is a collection of thoughts forged from the fires of ministry, convictions developed in the mind of a pastor as he reflects on what he does in the pulpit each Sunday.

All of the chapters are helpful, and there are several themes not usually addressed in books on preaching, such as the importance of praying during the sermon, why preachers should practice consecutive exposition, being yourself in the pulpit, developing style, and even how to be a guest preacher.

This will be a book I return to again.

I'm not a preacher. No matter. I like Charles's advice. I especially liked what he said about using manuscripts. Writing clarifies the thinking, so it's a good idea to write out what you intend to say. Another insight was on over-sharing. He gave me plenty to think about when choosing illustrations. Anyone who makes presentations, teaches, or communicates can benefit from On Preaching. (Preachers probably can, do)

Notes:

If you have an idea that cannot be backed up anywhere else in scripture, you’re wrong (38)

In summary, your sermon process should consist of several practical steps: thank yourself empty. Read yourself fall. Write yourself clear. And pray yourself hot. Then go to the pulpit and be yourself. But don’t preach yourself—preach Jesus to the glory of God” (39)

Personal note: Charles recommends writing a manuscript, but not preaching the manuscript. It’s preparatory

As someone who is feeling called to the ministry and to specifically being a pastor, this book was timely and helpful. I read this book before preaching my first sermon to two churches this past Sunday (Sept 30). Pastor H.B. Charles' book "On Preaching" is a great resource as I found myself gleaning his best practices & processes of preparing a sermon, to preparing to stand at the pulpit. I appreciated his words of wisdom and lessons learned from his many years as a pastor. Will continue to use this as a reference and helpful tool in the years ahead! Thank you for this great book, Pastor!

"This volume is not a textbook on preaching." - H.B. Charles Jr.

In other words, this book is not meant to teach you all the "nuts and bolts" of sermon prep. That said, there are tons of good thoughts relative to that. This is an introductory book on preaching that covers a wide range of topics. This is the first book on preaching I'd put in the hands of young preachers if they were to ask my advice. This is a wonderful introduction to preaching that should wet the palate for more books on preaching.

Every preacher should read this book.

A useful and concise guide to preaching. HB Charles does a great job of covering a variety of topics in short, digestible chapters. He covers sermon preparation, study, homiletics, and preaching with/without a manuscript, among a host of other topics.

Charles emphasises that sermon preparation is a form of spiritual warfare. He encourages readers to view their sermon preparation as a battleground where they engage in diligent prayer, seeking wisdom and understanding from the Lord. The emphasis on prayer as a foundation for effective preaching is a valuable reminder for all preachers.

This book is an invaluable resource for current and aspiring preachers.
