In Macanudo, Ricardo Siri Liniers uses crayon, ink, and watercolor with incredible skill to render an entire world that is poetic, absurd, emotionally expressive, and full of surprises. Anything and everything about our world can find its way into Macanudo, but it will have passed through Liniers's particular filter, and it thus will have been rendered funny, beautiful, and incredibly sympathetic.

Ricardo Siri Liniers was born in 1973 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he now lives with his wife and two daughters. For more than ten years he has published an enormously popular daily strip, Macanudo, in Argentina's largest daily newspaper, La Nacion. Up until now, nine collections of the strip have been published in Argentina. He also travels around the world drawing on stage with musician Kevin Johansen. His work has been published very successfully in nine countries, including Spain, Italy, France, Brazil, and the Czech Republic. His first book to be published in the United States was The Big Wet Balloon (September 2013).

Mara Faye Lethem has translated novels by David Trueba, Albert Sánchez Piñol, Idelfonso Falcones, Javier Calvo, Patricio Pron, Marc Pastor, and Pablo De Santis, among others. Her translations have appeared in The Best American Non-Required Reading 2010, Granta, the Paris Review, and McSweeney’s.

Conocía a Liniers sin conocerlo, había visto algunas de sus tiras sin saber que eran de él y sin saber que había más, cada una mejor y más bonita que la anterior. Vi que mi amiga Nayeli lo reseñó y le dio 5 estrellotas en GR, así que cuando me lo encontré en la biblioteca, me lo llevé sin pensarlo más.
Macanudo refleja cómo los pequeños detalles pueden ser grandes historias con el tratamiento adecuado, cómo cosas cotidianas de repente son dignas de ilustrarse. Además, es curioso cómo los personajes de Liniers ¡siempre piensan y se preocupan por su existencia! Es hermoso, ingenioso, te provoca sonrisas y risas con un humor muy lindo y genuino.

Simplemente la idea de ver sus dibujos no me llaman para nada la atención. Lo veo muy sobrevalorado, Everybody loves Liniers. Pero esperá, quién sos? Quino? Sendra? Fontanarrosa?? Maitena??. Ese bicho azul que tantos aman, es espantoso, no sé cómo los niños no tienen pesadillas al verlo xD

My first experience with this much published Argentinian artist Liniers, and it is way fun. He's published maybe 25 books, has been doing this Macanudo strip for years, and this is just one of many collections, though not much as been available in English until recently. This has the sweet, sad, melancholy, silly flavor of Charles Schulz and Bill Watterson, as the Goodreads description of his work suggests. I also got the feel of Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton. But this is consistent strong and entertaining, a collection of strips, and some of them you just want to pass right on to friends.So this is sweet fun, but never merely sappy or infantile; even when it is silly, it has depth, as with Schulz. Some of it has an attractive surreal quality to it. All ages, not just for kids, as with Schultz.

Loved this compendium! "Liniers" is the pen name of Ricardo Siri, an Argentinian cartoonist. His strips are thoughtful and quirky. He uses reoccuring characters like a little girl and her teddy bear, Mandelbaum and her cat, Fellini, the Sensitive Robot, lots of penguins. Reminiscent of Charles Schultz, but with some of the quirks of Gary Larson. It was a heartwarming read, and I will keep my eye out for the others in the series.

As you may know, I'm a big fan of comic strips. It's an unfortunate failing of the modern mainstream media model that the current slate of daily print comics is so bland and uninspired. So, I had to go to Argentina to find this collection (or rather, down 2 flights of stairs in my library).

This is impressive work. Beautiful artwork (incredible considering the daily deadlines) and an innocent appreciation of the absurdity and wonder of daily life that is found in all the classics. Bold and brash can be very funny, but it feels more rewarding when you find the smaller joke underneath--or sometimes the fact that there is no joke at all.

Macanudo je láska. A to neskutečná.
Už ani nevím po kolikáté jsem tenhle první díl četl. Nebo prostě jenom náhodně prolistoval. Kolikrát mě rozesmál nebo dojal. Kolikrát mi zlepšil náladu. To co ale vím je, že na mě funguje. Zas a znovu a pořád. Někdy to sice trvá více stránek než se plně ponořím a hihňám většině kousků jako nějaká malá školačka. Ale zatím se mi nestalo, že by to nepřišlo. Zatím se nestalo, že by mě Jindřiška, Madariaga, tučňáci, tajemný pán nebo někdo jiných z toho nekonečného zástupu účinkujících zklamali. A upřímně se bojím dne, kdy se to stane. Bude to totiž znamenat, že se ve mně něco zlomilo. Že už se nedokážu těšit z jemného, inteligentního, místy absurdního a místy dojímavého humoru. Znamenalo by to, že já sám už nejsem macanudo a že už se nedokážu těšit z drobností. A k čemu by člověku takový život byl.

Mohlo by se vám líbit, pokud:
- hledáte něco, co vám zvedne náladu po těžkém dni anebo vykouzlí úsměv při deštivé neděli
- si užíváte jemný, inteligentní humor

Spíš vás zklame, pokud:
- vás nelákají komiksové stripy jakkoliv kvalitní
- preferujete třeskutější humor a nesnášíte absurdno

Un humor que es a la vez intelectual, enternecedor y muy humano. Hay una clara influencia de Quino sin dejar de ser original y con personajes recurrentes en el universo "macanudo" que generan ciertas asociaciones de humor (el roboto sentimental, Enriqueta, Madriaga y Fellini, los duendes, los pingüinos, etc.). Realmente una lectura muy entretenida, tanto emotiva como inteligente.

Yo soy Americano. I first discovered Liniers and Macanudo while I was on my Honeymoon in Buenos Aires back in 2005. What a find! I am not an expert in reading Spanish, but I was still thrilled by the illustrations and can't express to you how excited I am to be able to actually read Macanudo now that it's published in English. It is brilliant! It is like sketch comedy in comic book form with funny recurring characters. I will be first in line to buy future english releases of Macanudo. Highly recommended!

With crayon, ink, and watercolors, this artist from Argentina offers readers amusing and philosophical musings on life. The comic strips feature various characters including garden gnomes, penguins, cows, and a girl named Henrietta and her cat Fellini. There are also assorted nameless individuals ruminating on the events of their days. It would be impossible to choose my favorite character or strip although I must confess to being partial to the book-reading Henrietta. There are few pleasures more satisfying than spending time with a good book and a good cat.

A compilation of strips previously published in an Argentine newspaper. I thought the art was very interesting, and the strips with some of the occurring characters consistently terrific. But, there were occasional strips sprinkled throughout that left me completely bewildered. Bizarre is too mild a word. If the art hadn't been the same, I would never have believed they were part of the same series. Still, on the whole, very enjoyable.

Jesus Christ is this beautiful. Between Mafalda and Macanudo, doesn't it seem like Argentina, for a country of its size, has a disproportionate number of comic strip geniuses? (Like, not cheap throwaway, "Oh, you think we should order another plate of fries? That's genius bro." I mean real-deal, authentically prodigious genius.) These are gorgeous. He must do these weekly - they can't possibly be daily strips, can they? So evocative and whimsical and light. Crazy good!
