A Treasury of Hadith: A Commentary on Nawawi s Selection of Prophetic Traditions

Rate this book
Imam Nawawi's collection of forty two hadith brings together some of the most important and pivotal Prophetic traditions. Each tradition encapsulates a great rule of the religion of Islam, described by Islamic religious scholars as an "axis" in Islam. The commentary of the great hadith master Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Daqiq al-'Id is simple but erudite.

Mokrane Guezzou is a well-known translator of over ten works including the Qur'an commentary Wahidi's Asbab al-Nuzul.

Ibn Daqiq al-'Id (d.1302) is accounted as one of Islam's great scholars in the fundamentals of Islamic law and belief.

Imam Nawawi (1233-77) was an authority on hadith and a biographer, lexicologist, and Sufi.

I've skimmed through this work quickly; it is the best edition in terms of translation of this work of the few I've come across in the English language.
Reads well, a commendable effort all round (translation and publishing).

* I received a copy of this book from the publisher for review purposes*

A Treasury of Hadith is a compilation of commentaries on Nawawi’s selection of 42 Hadith, by Ibn Daqiq al-‘Id (translated by Mokrane Guezzou) and the title isn’t an exaggeration because this book is indeed an invaluable treasure box.

Hadith contained in the book are mostly the ones I’m familiar with growing up ‘muslim’ and a few that were new to me but the commentary expanded what I thought I knew of the lessons contained in these Hadith. It broadened my mind in a way that doesn’t require me to be equipped with certain qualifications so that both Students of knowledge and ordinary Muslims can takeaway a truckload of lessons from it

The commentaries put into consideration the ‘context’, ‘event’ and ‘condition’ around which each Hadith came into being while backing them up with other prophetic sayings and words from the Quran. I unlearned, remembered and learned a lot of things and I cannot emphasize how important this book is on the shelf on every Muslim. Without a doubt, 5 stars and I recommend that you read it at intervals instead of ‘at once’, to allow for pondering

There is something about reading Ahadith that makes me want to absorb every word into the very fibre of my being till it becomes one with me and translates into my action.

I read this quite slowly, and though very few of these ahadith were new to me, the reminder was so necessary. It makes me think of the vast oceans between knowing something and actually absorbing it; till it begins to show in your actions.

Take, for example, the Hadith on stopping any wrong you see with your hand, if you cannot, with your tongue and if you cannot, oppose it in your heart though that is the lowest of faith. I have known this Hadith since I was a child, but as I read its commentary, I was put to silence by the realisation of the necessity of forbidding evil in society. And yet, how often do we observe all sorts of evils, all sorts of deviations from religion and acts that would displease Allah — done openly, out in the air, but how rarely do we speak up! Sin has become the norm and following Islam, unfortunately, the unusual. Had we, as a society, really held on to this Hadith, this would not have happened.

Every flipping page was a reminder of my imperfections and how truly vast are the teachings of my beloved Rasool (May Peace and Blessings be upon him).

[And 2 of my ABSOLUTE fav Ahadith are in this collection too. The one on Divine Love, and the one on Watch out for Allah and He will watch out for you.]
