Robert Harold Schuller was an American Christian televangelist, pastor, motivational speaker, and author. He was ordained as a minister, who rocketed to stardom in 1955 preaching from the roof of a concession stand at the drive-in movie theatre, displaying a passion and a marketing towards other people. He had been incorporating elements of psychology, into each of his messages and for many in the Christian community, he was serving up a "feel-good gospel" and that the money he was spending on buildings was to be put to better use by giving it to the poor.
I give up on this book. It feels like half-baked fluffy Christian motivation without any true substance. Reading about being a “Possibility Thinker” echoed a lot of prosperity gospel teachings that aren’t even Biblical - they just mention God or take a Bible verse out of context and call it “Christian” writing. Some of the ideas just rubbed me the wrong way, like: “Through the power of imagination I actually trimmed forty pounds of unsightly fat from my body.” And my PERSONAL not-favorite: “Treat ideas like newborn babies: treat them tenderly, they can die pretty quickly.” I’m sorry, WHAT? I won’t even quote the passage that compared ideas and dreams to ABORTIONS - but it’s okay, because Schuller says dreams are immortal even if they are aborted! (What is with this guy and comparing dreams to babies?) I got to July in this book before deciding that I didn’t want to read any more nonsense. The days that actually inspired me were few and far between. I won’t even get into the countless grammatical errors and mistakes. There are so many amazing Christian devotionals about chasing your God-given purpose. This isn’t one of them.
This is one of my all-time favorite books. I have the 50th Anniversary Edition in beautiful gold leather, b/c it needs to be sturdy to withstand all my readings. I have also underlined profusely with a ruler and special gold scrapbooking pen to preserve the pages. It is truly full of comfort, inspiration and motivation.
