Bob Dylan (born Robert Allen Zimmerman) is an American singer-songwriter, author, musician, poet, and, of late, disc jockey who has been a major figure in popular music for five decades. Much of Dylan's most celebrated work dates from the 1960s, when he became an informal chronicler and a reluctant figurehead of American unrest. A number of his songs, such as "Blowin' in the Wind" and "The Times They Are a-Changin'", became anthems of the anti-war and civil rights movements. His most recent studio album, Modern Times, released on August 29, 2006, entered the U.S. album charts at #1, making him, at age sixty five, the oldest living person to top those charts.
Bob Dylan won the Nobel Prize in Literature (2016).
When I was in high school I enrolled in an elective course about Bob Dylan's poetry and this was our main text book. Reading the surrealistic lyrics of a variety of his songs was very enlightening for me when I was 14 years old....just as it is today. I recently purchased a copy so that I might touch base again with this genius's lyrics~
Another of my attempts at understanding the songs of the prolific Bob Dylan, this has been my most in-depth examination; I listened to every track while reading the lyrics.
A few of the versions documented here are slightly different to what I heard and a lot of the demos and bootlegs are hard to come by (as would be the case for most sixty year old recordings), but it was all worth listening to as a study in songwriting.
I can see that a lot of people aren’t happy, simply because it’s a lengthy collection of words written to be sung and that there aren’t many drawings in the book, which is true, and then I see big Dylan fans giving it top marks. I’ve tried rating this book for what it is, which at the time of publication was an endless inventory of some lyrics better than others. I’ll continue to listen to Bob Dylan in search of my favourite songs and in forming my own image of the man.
This is a very odd book...but in a good way. It is a collection of Dylan's writing, mostly songs you'll probably be familiar with. Reading them as poetry is nice (and might clear up a few lyrics of which many of us may have been uncertain), but the drawings are fun and peculiar. I've heard this book is out of print these days, but I bet you can find a copy. It's worth a look.
It's Bob Dylan song lyrics, it's real good, I respect Dylan a whole lot as a song and dance man, but ultimately this stuff was written to be listened to. I'm glad that I own this, but there's a certain something missing in this form. The drawings are kinda eh to be quite honest.
The great Bob Dylan’s lyrics in book form is always cause for celebration. If songwriting has a god, it’s him. And his simple ink drawings are cool too.
читати Ділана - і слухати Ділана - це два різних заняття. два Боба. в цьому виданні прекрасне те, що додано деякі бутлегі й тексти на платівках (дещо подібні на "Тарантула") + кумедні малюнки автора.
Bob Dylan is one of the greatest American artists. His writing has inspired countless songwriters, poets, and writers. Back in the day before the Internet, it was difficult to obtain lyrics to songs, and this compendium was a must-have for any Dylan fan. It included the lyrics for every Dylan song for every album up to "New Morning" as well as unreleased songs and liner notes. There are also drawings and a couple copies of manuscripts. I spent countless hours learning Bob's lyrics from this book.
Note: In my beginning writing career, I arrogantly abrogated the pen name, Earley Dylan. This book of Bob Dylan lyrics is of great value; although some of the published lyrics are slightly different than the final, polished songs. Bob Dylan more than deserves the Nobel Prize, which I won't go into, except to say, there aren't more perfect and dense poems ever written than "All Along the Watchtower," Mister Tamborine Man," and "Like a Rolling Stone," among many others. Indeed, some of his smaller pieces are equally brilliant.
I read this book in the 70s. I thought it was a venture to capitalize on Bob Dylan's name by who else but himself. I love his voice but you have to admitt he didn't make his fortune by writing books.
