Due to my background, I knew more already about China than a lot pf Americans. [My mother went out as a Christian missionary to the China-Tibet borderland before WW2, then again to Western China in the mid-1940s and actually married my missionary father in Kunming, Yunnan Province. They had to leave China in September, 1949 as the communists consolidated their control, and our family later went to Hong Kong, where I went through my teen years and directly witnessed some of the spillover of the Cultural Revolution into that British colony.] Even with that background, this book filled in several gaps in my knowledge. I gave it 4 stars out of 5 primarily because I don't think anyone can give a 100% perfect account of all the complexities of Chinese history and the motivations and actions of the leaders. Note that the period referred to as "Modern" Chinese History still covers a rather lengthy period of time.
Concise and informative. I found this a helpful outline for referencing the most important events of recent Chinese history, however this book isn't particularly fun to read and is a good companion to more engaging documentaries, biographies, or historical fiction which provide much needed color.
Good info with a minimal, but obviously western, slant. I think it should have been a bit longer with more details, especially after Mao's death. As is, it pretty much wraps everything after Mao in one chapter.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. There was a lot of rebellions and internal wars that changed China to what it is now.
