Saletti Blood #3

Casualties of War

Rate this book
With a beautiful new bride and a baby on the way, life finally seems to be falling into place for Vincenzo Saletti. The family he's always wanted is now a reality he's determined to hold onto, by all means necessary.

Engaging in a full-fledged war against the man who tried to destroy his future, with the bombing of his Mercedes, Vincenzo utilizes the expertise of the hostile firing squad known as the Ferocious Four. He sends them on a mission, and as they work their way through the ranks of the Lombardo family, they have only one agenda on their minds: Vengeance for the Capo di tutti Capi.

But revenge doesn't come without a price. His war with Rocco instigating the involvement of the Adano family, Vincenzo must now contend with the Don of Perugia, and the son who broke the twenty-year old treaty between their families. And while the threat of a secondary war lingers in the air, so do tensions between him and his ambitious Uncle Lucio, who wants nothing more than to seize the business opportunities that will arise with Rocco's fall.

Now a happily married woman who's about to become the mother she longs to be, Novella Saletti can't imagine anything more devastating than realizing that the husband who started a family with her has also started a war. His atrocious murders making headlines across the nation, the rising body count leaves her fearing the worst for everyone involved. Will Vincenzo finish what he started before it's too late, or will they all become casualties of war?

Vana V is an American writer who's lived a very colorful life. The creator of the Saletti Blood series, she has incorporated a great deal of her own personal experiences and tragedies into her books as a means of self-therapy. For her, writing has always been her outlet.

She currently has a second series in the works, as she feels she'll never be able to express her thoughts enough and therefore must continue writing.

Having grown up with many horses at her feet, her love for them has never stopped. She owns several horses now and has even returned to training - her own yearling her latest student, which she calls her Heart Horse (their hair color is identical, by the way). To hear her tell it, if she's not writing then she's riding. She's also very fond of pugs and owns an entire grumble, who keep her company in her office while she's typing away. And for anyone wanting to get into her good graces, she won't deny that a perfect cup of cappuccino is the only way to her heart. Her previous life in Italy has spoiled her.

I know I wasn't very enthusiastic over the second book of this series. Ok, ok, I was down right unimpressed but for some reason I was compelled to read the third and what I thought would be the final book of the series.

I'm glad I did. It was sooooo much better than book two! I think because it focussed less on Novella and her childish antics and more a solid story line that was filled with shovels, shallow graves and death.

Vincenzo is still hot and manly, if a little unhinged at times but that suits his role as Il Capo perfectly. Novella was still childish but it was a huge reduction from last time, for which I was grateful.

I wish the author didn't feel the need to explain what is insinuated so much and trust that the reader will understand what is meant just through the conversations and body language description that she has already provided. Plus, when you have so many POV's in there already, it is completely unnecessary, as little is left to the imagination.

All in all, this was a decent read and I'm glad I persevered. A solid 3.5*.

Ok, the first book I was willing to let go of a lot of what I didn't like for the sake of entertainment. Book three, unfortunately, I just can't do it (I skipped book two). This is not a mafia romance. Calling a character "il capo" does not a mob boss make. Novella is extremely annoying and childish, and is a complete idiot. Vincenzo is not even close to being a Don, and there is nothing about this character that would ever make you think otherwise. The first book was entertaining, but look elsewhere for a true mafia romance.

Novella is supposed to be a mature 18yo. She seems to regress in age each book.
