A One-Night Stand Led to a Baby on the Way...and a Killer on Her Trail.

Mom-to-be Nicole Benedict rarely cut loose. So when a one-night stand led to an unplanned pregnancy, she went to track down Ethan Moore and share the happy news. Too bad a criminal mastermind and the bomb he launched in her direction got in the way...

As a bodyguard, Ethan was trained to protect people then walk away. But no amount of training had prepared him for protecting Nicole and his unborn child. Being the lone witness to the attack, Nicole had attracted a killer's attention - yet had no memory of that morning's events. Not only did Ethan's career hinge on this job, but if he failed, he could lose everything he'd never known he wanted....

SPOILERS AHEAD!!! Big giant spoilers!

This book starts with Nic, the heroine, going to Ethan's office to tell him that their drunken bar hookup 10 weeks ago left her pregnant. (How romantic!) His office building is at the top of some ritzy highrise and she gets in the solid glass elevator that runs up to outside of the building. Nearing the top she sees an unmarked black helicopter hovering beside the building, then a dude steps to the door with a rocket launcher. Oh noes! He shoots the building right above her head! No worries, though. She's okay EVEN THOUGH A MISSILE HIT THE BUILDING RIGHT ABOVE HER HEAD! She's knocked out for a minute and when she opens her eyes, the glass floor of the elevator is cracking and the elevator has been blown off the track and is dangling by the cable. Oh noes! But that's okay. The hero has his rappelling gear stashed in his office. You know, the one that was just blown to hell by the missile? Anyway, he grabs her right before the elevator crashes. The wind catches them and she is smacked into the building, knocking her out. Again.

She wakes up at the hospital, they discuss the baby, he tells her he wants nothing to do with her or the baby, then walks out. Then the bad guy shows up in her room, slaps her around, and injects her with something to knock her out. AGAIN. He straps her to a gurney and wheels her into the temporary morgue and turns on the freezer. No worries, though! Hero to the rescue again and after she warmed up (her lips were blue) the doctor released her. The. Doctor. Released. Her. 10 weeks pregnant, 2 head injuries, assault, unknown drug injection, hypothermia and she was released.

They go to a hotel, get connecting rooms and baddie finds her again and tries to suffocate her. Hero to the rescue and baddie escapes. They make out a bit here, cause nothing is sexier than near suffocation. At this point, the hero realizes she may be in danger and takes her to The Vault, a super-secret underground former bomb shelter with state of the art security, which is where the rest of his team is. They decide the baddies must be after her because she saw something that would identify the helicopter and she can't remember it. This is where the hero suggests using sodium Pentothal on the woman pregnant with his child to help her regain her lost memories. Luckily, his boss has more common sense.

At The Vault, there is an explosion and gas starts being pumped into it. Yeah, the same super secret place with fantastic security. How did the bad guys know where she is? No idea. It's never explained. They escape, hop on a motorcycle (because when I'm running from bad guys with weapons and have my choice of any vehicle, I always chose a motorcycle) and are chased by the same helicopter. And of course the helicopter once again has a rocket launcher. Motorcycle vs rocket launcher. Overkill much?

And this is only halfway through the book.

This review is running longer than I planned so lets wrap it up. Another assault, 2 gunshot wounds, and a bomb later, they live happily ever after.

If you are wondering why this book got a 2 star instead of a one, it's because despite all the impossible scenarios, plot holes, bad medical, and douchebag behavior by the hero, it kept me entertained. I continued reading just to see how much more wtfery the author could cram into one book.

I didn't love this. I ended up skimming through much of it. I didn't particularly care too much for either character. Nicole was okay, but Ethan spent most of the book talking about how he didn't want any part in their baby's life and trying to set her up with another guy. Then there was a whole lot extra stuff in there with a secondary couple that was too distracting. And it was literally danger lurking around every corner. Poor pregnant Nicole went through so much. It's a miracle her baby survived. I just found I didn't care for the HEA when it came.

If Nic didn’t have bad luck, she would have no luck at all. She was riding a glass elevator up to see the man she had a one-night stand with. She wanted to tell him she was pregnant. During her ride up, she was caught in a missile attack. Ethan saved her as the glass was cracking. This is how the book started, and it was non stop action from there. Ethan worked with a team that was close most of the time. I really enjoyed this book, and the team work. The ending was intense.

Fast paced and action packed from start to finish. While it was a thrill and race to find out who is after PPS, there wasn't much time spent on developing Nicole and Ethan's characters as much. It just seemed oh they are alone together for a few minutes, let's throw them some romantic moments or keep throwing Nicole into dangerous situations.

The focus of the store was divided between Nicole and Ethan and Robert and Evangeline. Might have been better to focus solely on one couple instead of 2 in such a short book and thin storyline.

Read it for the action but don't expect much sweet romance. Especially when up until the last moment, Ethan kept denying being part of Nicole and their baby's life.

Okay story of a bodyguard, a witness and a one-night stand pregnancy. Pretty weak story and nonsensical ending.
