Dodging the supernatural is making Petra’s freshman year very difficult. Emissaries from the imprisoned Faerie Queen are looking for her. The Militia watch her everywhere she goes. Oberon’s servants keep trying to kidnap her.
Petra is certain she doesn’t have special powers. She didn’t even know about the thousands of Fayborn refugees hiding on earth until last summer. She’s still not sure she believes any of it: her aunt, her godfather, and her roommate do seem a bit crazy. Friends and family are trying hard to keep her safe, but the Fayborn seeking her help are getting desperate…
J. Aleksandr Wootton is a poet, author, and book-worm ("hoards books in shelves and spare rooms; likes to sleep surrounded by them." Derivation, Old Tolkienic).
In his spare time, he chairs the folklore department at Lightfoot College.
The sequel in the Fayborn series does not disappoint. The story moves forward in interesting way, the characters are being developed even more and I enjoyed every single page of this novel. Why did it end so soon?
Thanks to J. Aleksandr Wootton for sending me his book in exchange for an honest review.
My dear, dear Petra... What to do with you and your story, I wonder?
In the second book of the Fayborn series, Petra Godfellow keeps trying to stay away from James Oberon's lackeys and clutches - but there are more ways for the Throneless King to get what he wants. And there are many people around Petra that are rarely what they really look like...
I keep trying to be awestruck with Petra's tale, I really do. The pace in this book was definitely better than it was in the first one, and the characters showed a bit more depth. But the fact remains that instead of answering questions, the writer kept creating more! There were too many gaps in the story concerning characters and situations, and I kept having the feeling that I was just being served awesome events without any explanation whatsoever... I don't want to give you any spoilers, but let's just say many characters proved to be more than what we had first thought - still, when you don't FULLY explain that and instantly jump on with the plot, not to mention how cool almost everyone was about the discoveries made, the reader is bound to feel somewhat empty...

Likes: --Fast paced --Thematically excellent--the author's ideology shines through, but it is not oppressive or preachy --Dealt a little more with the darkness major characters had inside, and forced them to face it. This is very refreshing in the face of so many stories in which the darkness in characters is determined to be "misunderstood" or is simply another "equally valid" view of the world --I am a Lewis fan. If you are too, you will totally geek out at least twice as you read this book. If you aren't, the tie in is such that you will be blissfully unaware you missed anything. Of course, you can go back and fix that problem after you finish this book :-)
Dislikes: --Left me hanging again. I generally like a serial novel to wrap up at least a few loose ends at the end. This feels like the second installment of a single, long novel. Of course, it is a clever trick. It has already worked once, and I will be very eagerly awaiting the next installment/book despite my annoyance at having to pull out of this fabulous world so abruptly.
I thoroughly enjoyed this sequel to Her Unwelcome Inheritance (I would strongly recommend reading that book first). The characters develop in interesting ways and Wootton continues to balance character and story development with good action and intrigue. This was a good read.
Man, these books are hard to put down. After I finished the first book last night, I bought the second one, started it, and I have now completed it tonight. Again, the integration of elements of other great works of literature makes this book so enjoyable. Also, something that stood out to me in the second installment was the development of the secondary characters. I still appreciate Petra, and I think she is still just as good of a protagonist as before. However, I enjoyed getting to know the remaining cast on a deeper level.
As I complete this review, I am going to Amazon to purchase the third part of this series. I'm ready to see where we go next.
