Imagine standing in line at Harvey Nichols waiting to buy the most gorgeous silk Gucci dress. The only minor problem? You can’t afford it, it’s a size smaller than you are, and you have absolutely no place to wear it.
Meet Natalie Flemming: a twenty-something woman working in London for a fabulous shoe-designing firm, but the only thing they let her touch is the company’s tax forms. She has decided to give fate a vacation and takes the task of finding the man of her dreams (or Johnny Depp if he would just return her calls…) into her own hands.
She craves adventure, spontaneity, passion- or will just settle for a decent date.
Emily Harper has a passion for writing humorous romance stories where the heroine is not your typical damsel in distress. Throughout her novels you will find love, laughter, and the unexpected!
Originally from England, she currently lives in Canada with her husband, children and a very naughty dog.
A quick, easy, chick lit fluffy book, and the main character Natalie Flemming gets into scrapes by her telling little fibs that get her into trouble. Natalie is clumsy, scatty, and unlucky but is looking for love. The shoe company she works for Makka is in trouble, so an expert trouble shooter Oliver is brought in. Natalie works in finance and has been bitten badly when it comes to both love and her wish to be considered more professionally at work. I really loved her letters to the man of her dreams at the end of the chapters. But for me, it went from her placing an ad in the wanted column in a magazine to her getting into the relationship far roo quickly. Overall, it was an OK read that pleasantly passed the time.
Natalie Flemming thinks she has her career on track as an accounting manager at a designer shoe company and all she wants to do is find her Mr. Right. Getting frustrated not meeting the man of her dreams she places an ad in a magazine hoping to expand her prospects. When a handsome stranger shows up at her company though Natalie can't concentrate on any of her potential dates being infatuated with Oliver.
A lovely romantic comedy that had me laughing out loud on more than one occasion with Natalie's antics. Loved Natalie's character right from the start, just the right mix of a sort of zany craziness that had me both laughing and rooting for things to turn out well for her. Her letters to the man of her dreams were always good for a chuckle between the chapters too.
I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review by the author which I;m more than happy to give.
What a book! Emily gave us the perfect lead character in Natalie, she comes across as a totally scatty, shallow airhead - something she is very clearly not as her job as an accountant for a shoe company would indicate. Unlucky in love, accident prone and hilarious sum up her character sweetly. She places a singles ad and each chapter of the book is started off with a letter to her perfect man.
The company she works for is in trouble and brings in an outside firm to head a marketing campaign - this was headed by Oliver Miles. He is drop dead gorgeous and finds himself on the receiving end of many of Natalie's white lies as well as somehow managing to turn up on her blind dates too!
This book is light hearted, funny and hilarious in parts - we get to know enough about the characters to care and find that outward appearances are not always a true reflection of the person within. Natalie in particular masks her lack of confidence/self worth behind the mask of office clown. Oliver is the one that makes her break out - push her boundaries and look at herself. He plays good cop bad cop so well - as a reader I never doubted him, I thoroughly understood and liked him. He pushes her just far enough then brings her back in.
You can't help cringing at some of the situations Natalie finds herself in, yet at the same time every woman will be able to relate to her no matter how confident we are. Let's face it - women over think, over analyse and dissect every situation.
If you're looking for a feel good book, that you'll smile whilst reading and laugh out loud every other page then this is the book for you - I loved it, the perfect read for a sunny afternoon in the garden.

Actual rating 4.5/5
Well, well, well... Helen Fielding's fans, Sophie Kinsella's fans, there's a new chick lit author ready to conquer the stage! Emily Harper might be new on the chick lit scene, but trust me, she KNOWS what readers want and what's more important, this debut really feels like breath of fresh air.
I've been wanting to read this book ever since I saw the cover, which by the way I think is very chic and girly. When I was asked to review it, I couldn't be happier. I mean, discovering new authors and brilliant fresh reads is the most interesting part of a blogger's life.
I didn't have any expectations, but I did have a strong feeling this will be a good chick lit read. I was close because it's not just good, it's FANTASTIC!
The story is centered around Natalie Flemming, an accountant in a shoe-designing company. Now Natalie is sure one of the loveliest, funniest, cutest MC I've read about lately. She's just so upbeat, I could literally feel her energy bursting out of the pages.
She's on her quest for Mr.Right and even decides to write an ad in the papers. But wait, she's NOT desperate or whiny, so don't you dare go that way. Once you meet Natalie you'll see she's one of the happiest fictional characters you've come across with.
But back to the story now and sorry for getting a bit distracted (it does happen when a book leaves a strong impression on me). Her company is going through some hard time and a new guy steps on the scene, Oliver, who's supposed to get everything back on track. But the thing is, Natalie is not aware of who he is or why he's been employed by the company. But she's sure about one thing, he's drop dead gorgeous and she might be a bit attracted to him. Seems both Natalie and the management of Makka (the shoe company she works for) will need to make some decisions while going through so many changes.
This is such a feel-good read, a typical summer read you'd definitely want to have on those lazy days offering you lots of laughs and fun. Natalie is a totally lovable character that will win you over from the first page. She's like Kinsella's Becky, but less obsessed with shopping (though she's still mad about fashion). But there aren't really that many references to brands (I remember only ones for Makka, which is fine considering it's the company she works for). I'm saying this, because I've met many people who dislike this constant mentioning of brands in books, but in this case, you have nothing to fear my dears.
You'll root for Natalie, you might even drool over Oliver (or the Makka shoes they design)...but anyway, you'll devour this book in one sitting, I'm quite sure of that. It's funny, easy read, hilarious at times, and will leave you with a big smile on your face. The romance part is brilliantly written and gradually built (which is very important for me) and each of these characters feel very real.
I wonder if the author is planning on a sequel? I'm not sure, but I do hope I get to see Natalie and Oliver once again. I loved them both THAT much!
In the mean time, I sure will be checking out Emily Harper's new novel 'Checking Inn', because I've already heard fantastic comments. If you're a chick lit fan or generally, looking for an easy and feel-good read that will make you relax after an exhausting day, THIS is the book for you.

And Now for the Review... This review was completed by John C. Laird
1 Book Title – 5 of 5 For the Reviewer: Did it grab your attention right away? (5) Was it ho hum? (3) Would you glance at it and then forget it? (1) What do you think the author might consider for future book titles? (You should have plenty of space for each item on the form as I think I set it up for the boxes to 'grow'.)
JCL: On the money. The heroine of the story has a tendency to tell little 'white lies' to others, as well as herself, in her quest for romance and to insulate herself against failure. An endearing trait of the young lady and therefor appropriate as a title. And a romance with maybe a dash of dishonesty thrown in? Well, maybe I'll read on for a bit....
2. Book Cover - 5 of 5 For the Reviewer: Did it grab your attention? (5) Was it ho hum? (3) Did it look like it was haphazardly thrown together? (1) What do you think the author might consider for future book covers? Did it help make the title more effective?
JCL: Hmmmm, I can probably be classified as a 'leg man' when it comes to women, so the cover caused a pleasurable double-take for me. And the added paraphernalia suggesting possibly a business woman with an appreciation for the more traditional feminine things (purse, shoes), also reflects accurately the female lead in the book. And the way the whole cover is put together suggests a whimsical, lighthearted story, which in effect, it is.
3. First 500... - 10 of 10 For the Reviewer: Thinking of the first 500 (usually about 2 pages) words of the book, do you think the author provided enough incentive to urge the reader to continue? What stood out to you the most? Were you captivated after a couple of paragraphs? Did the 1st sentence grab you? Did you get to around the 500 word mark and didn't have a clue where the story was going?
JCL: Hooked me for sure. The first line has the main character, late as usual, bypassing the elevator and sprinting for the stairs. Late for what, you wonder? Okay, maybe I'll read a little more, I think. By the end of the first paragraph you realize you're dealing with a humorously cynical, semi-airhead of a woman. I mean, she's bypassing the elevator and taking the stairs because she's in a hurry, forgetting that her office is on the 23rd floor of the building. Exhausted by the 3rd floor, she rationalizes that 'exercise is overrated anyway' and takes the elevator. During the remainder of the first 500, we find out that Natalie, unlucky at love, has decided to be proactive and reply to an ad in the company magazine and try out a dating service. I just had to read on and see how this panned out.
4. Blurb Effectiveness – 10 of 10 For the Reviewer: Now that you've finished the book, please take a moment to look back over the blurb. How effective do you think the blurb will be to potential readers? Did the author write a blurb that was enticing and went along with the story? (10) Was the blurb lacking? (5) Was it entirely too long or too short? (1) Do you have any suggestions for the author to make it more effective?
JCL: The blurb reflects the book's story line and hints at Natalie's circumstances and personality. Although the author suggests that the heroine is taking things into her own hands, I might have added something indicating the use of a dating service to achieve those ends. But I'll give the author a pass here; she added that little clue on her book cover, so assuming the reader scanned the cover, they would have known that.
5. Age Recommendation/Genre Classification – 10 of 10 For the Reviewer: Age Recommendation - If the book is entirely too young/juvenile for the intended age group? Is it entirely too mature? (Please take into account swearing/sexual scenes/drug use, etc... Genre Classification - Was the book listed as a thrill ride of a read but was more of a bumper car ride (sort of all over the place)? Was it listed as a mystery and you simply had to turn the page to find out 'who did it'?
JCL: No age recommendation was listed, but it is a romance novel with several sexual situations. Although the author set up two or three potentially steamy sex scenes, she uses hints, innuendos and well placed adjectives to delicately dance around the subject nicely, without sinking into the sexual morass of an erotic novel. Personally, I'd say 14+ would be appropriate.
6. Presentation/Format – 10 of 10 For the Reviewer: Did the 'innards' of the book follow a clear, concise, standard format throughout the book? Or did you have a hard time keeping up with paragraphs or dialogue? Were multiple fonts used? Were they distracting?
JCL: No problem whatsoever. The formatting was correct and the presentation clear and concise. The dialogue was crisp and natural. In each chapter the author uses a handwritten letter from Natalie to her imaginary perfect man, a humorous underlining of her thoughts, desires and dreams.
7. Theme/Originality – 10 of 10 For the Reviewer: Was this book similar to something you may have read before? If it was a retelling - did the author make it feel fresh and just different enough that it kept you involved? Or was it formulaic and a 'rehash' of a popular tale/current 'pop' genre? OR - is this the first time you can recall ever reading a book with theme/setup/etc of this particular title?
JCL: This is an 'unconventional' romance novel, in the sense that the main character, Natalie, is the anti-thesis of what you would expect in the hot, female lead. She possesses many of the flaws and insecurities that many of us have (both men and women). She rationalizes, procrastinates, makes excuses, fibs (white lies) and indulges in denial in confronting day to day situations--especially romance.
8. Description/Enhancement – 10 of 10 For the Reviewer: Did the author use descriptive language and 'all those extra little things' to make it the best it could be? Did you feel it was too sparse in description? Did the author go OVER board with the description?
JCL: The story flowed smoothly with nary a bump in the road. The description of Natalie's world and her interactions with it were presented entertainingly and humorously. No complaints here.
9. Intrigue – 10 of 10 For the Reviewer: Did you want to turn the next page because it was SO good? (10) Was it interesting but you didn't quite have an urge to keep reading? (5) Did you think 'I wonder if we have Twinkies in the pantry? Mmmmm, Twinkies' while you read? (1)
JCL: I literally couldn't stop reading this. There was no 'intrigue' in the usual sense of the word. But the reader will want to continue reading just to find out where Natalie's hilarious search for her perfect man will take her. Too entertaining to put down.
10. Grammar/Mechanics – 9 of 10 For the Reviewer: Was the book pretty darn flawless? (10) Did you see more that 5 or 10 'jump out' at you mistakes in grammar or the actual mechanics (verb tense, noun/pronoun agreement, misused words) ? (5) Did you feel it was a chore to read because it was riddled with errors? (1)
JCL: The ONLY place where I could find anything less than perfect. There were three or four minor errors. I can't find my notes, but they were along the lines of 'to instead of too', content instead of contentment'. Maybe four minor errors in spelling/usage in the entire book; pretty darn good.
11. Overall Impression – 10 of 10 For the Reviewer: When all is said in done - did you enjoy the book? Would you recommend it to others?
JCL: Excellent. This was a light-hearted, humorous romance novel. Very entertaining. I was grinning through most of the read and outright chuckling through several scenes. If you're looking for a convoluted mystery or who-done-it, a steamy adult novel, or paranormal romance--this book isn't for you. But if you're in the mood for something light that will tickle your funny-bone, join the bumbling, romantic Natalie as she searches for her perfect man. She's endearingly hilarious. I loved it. Highly recommended.

We at The MBR wish Emily Harper a lot of success with her gloriously funny chick lit book 'White Lies' and hope to hear more from her in the future!
Meet Natalie. She works as an accountant in a shoe company and desperately seeking the love of her life (read Johnny Depp). Fate is not working as it should, so Natalie decides to speed up the things little bit. So she puts a want ad in a magazine in order to meet the man of her life. Maybe couple of blind dates will help her to find the right one. In the very same time, the shoe company where Natalie works goes through very hard times and they need help from outside. The authorities hire a new person for marketing. That guy Oliver is so cute. But he hates her. Why, no idea at all. So, can Natalie finally find the love of her life? Very first blind date, Oliver appears. OMG!
Designer shoes, designer dresses, can a girl ask for more? Natalie is such a funny person. I love her so much as a character, she is so close to my heart. She always talks before she thinks, so often her big mouth gets herself into big troubles. Only Natalie can put herself in such ridiculous situations that made me laugh so many times. We are both so in love with Johnny Depp (Natalie, he is mine!). The one thing that I loved about Natalie the most is that as long as her her head is in the clouds, her feet are on the ground. She is a person that would never harm anyone on purpose just in order to get what she wants.
When Ms. Harper asked me to review her book, I read the blurb and totally fell in love with the story. This is chick lit in every sense of the word. From the very first page, I enjoyed this light and hilarious read. It made me laugh so many times. Such a great start for a debut author. So after this, I'm looking forward to read Ms. Harper's future books.
Natalie works in the Accounting department of a shoe company called Makka. They make expensive designer shoes. She actually loves designer wear, but unfortunately she didn't get the chance to work in the marketing department when she asked for a job there. Natalie has been very dependable with their numbers for many years, but it isn't where her passion lies. She has two very nice colleagues, so work isn't all that bad and it pays the bills, which is handy as Natalie loves new outfits. She's looking for the man of her dreams, but hasn't found him yet, which is why she's placed an advert to find her dream man. When the company hires Oliver because changes need to be made to make Makka more of a competitor on the market a lot of things suddenly change in Natalie's life.
White Lies is such an enjoyable read. Emily Harper's tone of voice is filled with irony. White Lies is fun. It's also a romantic story. Natalie is a great heroine. She's pretty and she wears the nicest clothes, but she also stumbles through life like we all do and I often had to laugh out loud while reading this book. I really liked the letters she writes to the man of her dreams at the beginning of each chapter. They are original and they make the story even stronger. When Natalie finally meets a nice man there are a lot of misunderstandings between them. She has her flaws and sometimes makes assumptions too quickly without trying to uncover the facts. I liked how the story developed and loved the ending. Oliver is kind and wonderful, but he's also a man with principles who lives for his work. There's a lot of very well executed chemistry and flirting. The fast pace and the witty style are making this quite entertaining. White Lies is a book that made me cheerful and I've recommended it to quite a lot of people already. Reading this story put a smile on my face and it made me very happy!
White Lies is a great, easy to get engrossed in read. The story centres around Natalie. She works as an accountant in a shoe designing company. Natalie is single and looking for love. Before each chapter Natalie writes a letter to the man of her dreams telling us what she is looking for.
Enter Oliver, the love interest of the book. As in most chick lit the course of love never runs smoothly.....Oliver is a consultant sent in along with his partner Angelica to sort out the company who are floundering. You can see the spark between them right from the off. As the book progresses the flirting starts, but is there any future for them? Oliver is only around temporarily and his business partner Angelica seems to want more than just a business partnership. Will she get her happy ending? Read the book to find out :-)
I found this book really easy to get into. There is a good, strong storyline and well developed characters. I felt I could identify with some of Natalie's personality and traits which made me laugh quite a lot. The book is lighthearted and has some funny scenes but there is enough depth to the characters for you to boo and hiss at the mean ones, and cheer for the goodies.
I would recommend this book for a holiday read, for when travelling, or even a cosy weekend on the sofa with some chocolate for company.
Thank you to the author Emily Harper who kindly sent me a copy of this book in return for an honest review.
I was given a copy of this book prior to its release date to review. I read it in a couple of hours and I loved it. When I read the synopsis the author provided I was interested, but I still wasn't that sure what the novel was about. Natalie Flemming, the heroine of the story, tells lies but the kind we all tell. My mother would call them 'fibs'. She works for a shoe company as their accountant and won't pursue any promotions or advances in the company because of an incident in her past with one of her ex-boyfriends. She places a want ad in a magazine (I was laughing so hard, even pages later from her want ad) and starts dating the men in order to find her husband. In the meantime, Oliver is hired by her company and he turns Natalie's life upside down. The heroine is so endearing from the first few pages it is impossible not to cheer for her from the beginning. Sometimes with Chick Lit I roll my eyes a bit at the heroines because the authors make them clueless. Natalie isn't clueless, she just talks herself into things even when she knows they aren't right. I think this is why I liked her so much, because I do that all the time. Emily Harper has a way of bringing you into the character's lives within the first few pages. This is an author to watch.
To be frank, I don’t want to be writing this review. I don’t want to be writing it for the simple fact that I’d rather still be reading White Lies. Now I just have what is known in the biz as a book hangover *sob*
The story bounces along, sweeping the reader up along with it, and has a feel-good factor that makes it both unputdownable and downright fantastic. Natalie is incredibly likeable, with Harper nailing the common female trait of overthinking things, making her relatable in a very normal sort of way. Oliver, her love interest, is knee wobblingly perfect: handsome, driven and conflicted – what more could you want in a book boyfriend!
The conclusion is heart-warming as it wraps you up in a cosy blanket of romance and emotion, giving the reader exactly what they want. Anyone who reads this is sure to have a smile on their face as they turn (or swipe) the final page.

Meet Natalie Flemming. She doesn't exactly lead an exciting life. She works at a shoe company as an accountant. She orders plenty of items off of the shopping channel. She wishes she had a boyfriend. “White Lies” makes you fall in love with this believable, independent, hilarious woman as you follow her journey from accountant to marketing executive. Of course, there’s romance along the way! Smoking hot Oliver will have you fanning your face, and their chemistry will make you wish YOU were trapped in an elevator with a sexy stranger. Emily Harper’s debut novel will not disappoint – a great beach or before bed read!
I received this copy from the author in exchange for my honest review.
Natalie Flemming is looking for the man of her dreams but it is taking her a bit longer than she expected. Tired of unsuccessful dates with guys who don't really see her, she decides to takes matters into her own hands and she publishes an ad to find The One. She starts getting answers for the ad and let's say that she finds herself in some hilarious situations.
Meanwhile, in her work place, the shoe company Makka, things are not going that well. Apparently the shoes are not selling good enough and the company has to do some restructuring. They hire Oliver to get everything back on track but when he arrives some people start to get fired. Natalie, even if she kind of hates her job, has no intention of losing it so she confronts him. She is quite suprised that not only is he gorgeous but he has some exciting plans for the company and specially for her! The question is... only professionally or is there something more going on between them? My opinion
First of all I have to say that this is the debut novel of Emily Harper and that it is a fantastic chick lit book! Her writting is very light and fresh and the story is lovely. It is one of those book you read in a couple of hours and leaves you with a huge smile on your face and a warm feeling.
I have read some reviews that say that Natalie reminds them of Becky from the Shopaholic series and I totally agree! She is so lovable and real and even if she is not that obsessed in shopping she is special without realising it, just like Becky. So if you are a big fan of Sophie Kinsella (I mean, who isn't?) and you are looking for a fun read, some laughs and specially some romace, you'll love this book. Moreover, there is a letter to her "prince charming" at the beginning of every chapter that I found quite hilarious!
Huge thanks to Emily Harper for sending me a free e-copy of this book to review. I was really intrigued by the blurb for this book and the mention of waiting for Johnny Depp to call (as a fan of him myself I too am waiting for that call!) The cover is really bright & inviting, if those legs belong to the main character she has legs to die for!
The book tells the story of Natalie Flemming and her quest to meet the man of her dreams, just one problem is that none of those men she has met so far seem to be him, but can a chance meeting with the handsome Oliver change that? Natalie works in the accounts department for a shoe company (now the cover image is explained!)
This book is hilarious I loved Natalie’s little fibs (her love of extreme sport was the best!) I was totally gripped by this book and I literally couldn’t put it down (this lead to me being very upset that I couldn’t get a seat on my train last night so I could finish the book off and see if Natalie finally got her dream man).
It was a great insight into the mind of a single woman struggling to find Mr Right, with just the right touch of humour added into the mix so it’s not just your normal girls meets boy love story. Each of the main characters were really believable and I could understand and engage with their motives. The book is really easy to read and a real page turner! Loved it and would recommend this to everyone looking for their latest purchase! (Also if Natalie has found her dream man, and Johnny Depp does call, pass him my way please ;))
White Lies is the perfect chick lit self-indulgence. Natalie Flemming, the heroine, is a funny, intelligent and somewhat flakey character whom you can't help but love. Following Natalie's journey through the world of dating is hilariously entertaining. Perhaps what I love most about the story is that while Natalie is the consummate girly girl, she is one smart woman who ultimately decides not to compromise herself in her pursuit of love. She learns that she is worth more than settling for someone who can't offer her his best. You'll find yourself cheering for Natalie and Oliver (her mysterious and handsome love interest) as they both work through their own issues to try and make it work together. This was one novel that I couldn't put down, it's an easy read and highly entertaining.
A cute quirky read that had me laughing, smiling, feeling a little sad and loving the romance. Our main character Natalie is like a lot of women who are looking for love, for that perfect someone. Of course she takes plans into action which causes some hilarity to ensue mind you. With an off the bat budding romance, humor around every corner and embarrassment usually right behind it, this book was a great read leaving me hoping for just a little more. Or Johnny Depp since he hasn't returned Natalie's calls
I was given a copy of White Lies by the author in exchange for an honest review and I can honestly say I LOVED it!
From the first page I fell in love with the main character, Natalie. She was hysterical and extremely relatable. She had some amazing one liners that made me laugh out loud....
I started White Lies this morning and literally couldn't put it down until I finished. Fans of Sophie Kinsella will love White Lies
I received a copy of this book to review from Goodreads. It has taken me slightly too long to get round to reading it, sorry, but when I did I flew through it. A really quick, happy, little chick lit holiday read. I really enjoyed it. Nothing challenging in either content or style but v enjoyable. My only criticism is although set in London a few Americanisms have slipped in eg sidewalk.
I adored this book! There is nothing better than curling up with a book which contains a great main character...witty, fun and a character I could totally relate to. I so enjoyed being on the journey with Natalie and her funny mishaps. With humor, romance and a great story that flowed flawlessly this is a debut not to be missed! 4.5 stars!!!!
This book had me rolling in certain parts. It was a great read. I love it when books can make me laugh, shed a tear, and feel for the characters in the book. I will be looking for more books by Emily Harper!
I couldn't even make it past the first chapter of this book and I tried a few times. I disliked the main character almost immediately. I suspect it wasnt the authors intent, but the character came across as juvenile, pathetic and shallow. I didn't wait to find out if she met Mr. Right (or Johnny Depp) because the book is so poorly written I couldn't waste any more of my life reading it.
Office romance that truly had me laughing out loud at some of the things going through Natalie's head. Mainly because they are things that have gone through my head too. Downgraded for the use of "sidewalk" and "automobile". This is a story set in England about an English person, from her point of view, so she should be talking about pavements and cars. I think the author may have been living in Canada too long. (Said with a smile)
Really enjoyed this book. Made me laugh out loud which surprised me. Some 'second hand embarrassment ' as my daughter would say which is cringe and funny but not so much that I'd back my eyes. I'd say relatable to those that have been dating and trying fit in,.in general. The moral being we should be true to ourselves.
Loved Oliver and Natalia. Really enjoyed watching their interactions. Loved that he encouraged and supported her love for marketing and made her feel beautiful. She was quirky and fun. Had me laughing.
The book was amusing, but certainly wasn't well edited. There were lots of typing errors. There were also lots and lots of details left out of this very unrealistic story, but if you just consider that it isn't to be taken too seriously anyway, it is still fun to read.
