Often people wonder where exactly the ancient Egyptians went. After all the invasions and time between the Old Kingdom to the modern era has left modern Egypt a former shell of itself. Because of this fact people often question whether any of the descendents of the ancient Egyptians exist in modern Egypt. Truth is that many of the customs and traditions which existed amongst the commoners in ancient Egypt still exist amongst the urban baladi and Fellahin in the rural countryside. I recommend this book to all those curious about the link between ancient and modern Egypt.
People unacquainted with ancient Egypt will also glean much insight into the politics of the common modern Egyptian citizen. Americans interested in the so-called Middle East should take particular interest in modern Egypt because its the de facto gateway between Africa and the Arabic speaking world. Also the cultural capital of most of the Arabic speaking world.
