this book and chalmers's the conscious mind really had me jazzed about 2-d semantics, the idea that there are two distinct semantic values for any utterance. "assertion," reprinted in this anthology, is one of the earliest and definitely one of the classiest presentations of the idea. don't really agree with stalnaker too much, but he always astounds with his ingenuity and rigor. smart stuff and very important.
