This book is packed with methods and tips for studying, effectively reading technical material, taking different types of exams, note-taking, concentration, memory, and more. These tips are based off of tried-and-true methods and well-established science. Unlike other study books, these methods are not fad-based gimmicks. No matter how you try to get around studying, it does take actual work - but there are more effective and engaging ways to do so than just sitting down and taking notes.
When I happened across this book, I had looked at a tremendous amount of other books for finding ways to make my study time more effective. They were terrible. Most of them catered to Fine Arts majors (or Business majors at BEST) and offered methods for skirting through college with good grades and zero knowledge. I'm sorry, but that simply won't work for science, math, and engineering. Further, I shutter to think ANY college student wastes their time and money learning next-to-nothing in college, only to enter the workforce and make decisions affecting other people's lives and/or safety.
This book is different. It teaches you how to actually learn the material, and most of it can be applied to science and math majors. I wish I would have come across this earlier! It also contains 17 fun exercises sprinkled throughout the book to help you personalize the methods so that they cater to your specific ways of thinking. This book is all about working WITH your mind instead of against it.
I read the Kindle version of the book, which is updated from the printed version. The conversion resulted in minimal formatting problems, but there was an exercise that was missing (yes, I reported it), so that sucks. To be fair, I borrowed this book from the Kindle Lending Library, so it didn't cost a penny. In fact, I started this review with a 4-star rating, but recalling the massive amount of wealth I've garnered, I had to bump it back up.
This book is written for a broad range of students, so you may see a few comparisons between college and high school - but not many. And some of the most important information is repeated several times, obviously, because this book is written for people with ineffective study skills. But it is linguistically accessible to all readers and remains positive in tone, even while discussing common pitfalls. I also liked that the length of the book made it easy to finish quickly in order to focus on what's important - applying the methods!
