A very fine book for both the layman and the student with little knowledge on the topic. While this is supposed to be a textbook, it is definitely enjoyable to read - I wish my actual textbooks were half as fun as this one is.
The books gives a large amount of useful and up-to-date information across a number of topics, such as biological factors, sexual identity and orientation, sexual preferences and sexual attraction, so if you are looking for a good and wide introduction to this topic, this is definitely your book.
On the other hand, for someone who is already somewhat knowledgeable in these topics, most of the book will already sound familiar and you'll be better off looking for something more specific about particular topics. Keep in mind that this is a 400 page book (approximately) with 15 chapters, so of course there's only so much that can fit in.
For a required textbook, this was a really interesting read. I don’t know if I would’ve specifically picked it up to read, but I honestly enjoyed the reading in this book.
LOVED. (Although what a humiliation ritual to try and read this book anywhere in public with an A4 glossy photo of naked bodies as the front cover and double page spreads of vulvas on the inside).
THIS is what the conservatives are scared of yk. PSYC3071 Human Sexual Diversity as a psych elective module IS the woke mind virus they are shitting themselves over because now I know in-depth about the female orgasm, the social construction of gender, why lesbians are just better, rimming, pegging, what's going on with the furries... Shout out to this core textbook, a genuine pleasure to read. I have never before read the entirety of an assigned textbook, but look at me go. Long live the liberal arts education.
As it is an intro textbook, a lot of it is fairly common knowledge, destigmatisation, and overlap w previous biology and psychology textbooks, but I still learnt a lot and had a fabulous time doing it.
This book gave a lot of statistical information which is helpful for what it is. I don't feel it gave much insight to the relation of the psyche to human sexuality. There's a lot to be said about the psychological depth, developmental, emotional, relational, or spiritual underpinnings of how humans experience their sexuality. If this book said any of it, it was either by accident or by indirectly implying conclusions that would be too taboo if stated directly. I finished it because I was holding out for something helpful. That was a false hope.
Hey everyone, remember how you had some sort of sex ed class (if you got the permission slip signed) in middle school or high school? In case you didn't know, that class didn't teach you shit. Almost everyone who is reading this review right now knows significantly less about sex than they think they do. And since sex is awesome I highly recommend this book!
This is a cursory text on Human Sexuality. In spite of the size of the book, it does manage to touch on a wide range of topics. The good thing is that it has been published recently and hence modern research and theoretical approaches have been incorporated to address most of the issues. Controversial subjects have been handled with reasonable(well, almost) amount of fairness.
With every other matter that sexology tries to deal with, you keep getting reminded of the fact that designing and utilizing appropriate research methods are generally the major stumbling blocks in the course of scientific study of the subject.
Familiarity with research methods(crucial) and Psych 101 is recommended for a better interpretation of the book.
general university course book about the psychology of sexuality. It does not provide anything deep or insightful. it just tells us what is the latest general theories and updates. There is a lot of bullshits going on in the chapters dedicated to the gender studies but that is understandable. All on all it is a good book but I would not suggest to take everything written as hard science as the field is evolving and basically there are many variables which limited reaching to any definitive results.
I have never reviewed a textbook before. That's because I've never actually read a textbook before. This is so much better than other textbooks. He says what he means, he is engaging, and he even makes jokes. Unlike every other textbook I've ever used for a class, I actually wanted to read this one.
