This book had won the Prosvetitel (Enlightenment) award in the natural sciences nomination last year, so I decided to read it. That was the right thing to do; the book is excellent, and perhaps most surprisingly, it does not plunge into depths and details utterly incomprehensible for laypeople, the way even the best books of this genre do (like Yastrebov, for example, another winner). It remains quite clear all the way that the author is a serious scientist with a lot to be proud about; at the same time, he is engaging, witty, and interested in 'humanities' (like old poems and such) without being too 'quirky' as many non-specialists turn out to be. Highly recommended for anyone interested in evolution and natural science and where we all came from.
