Although she was born in Gourock, and attended the Edinburgh College of Art, the highlands and islands of Scotland have always been Mairi Hedderwick's true home. In 1962 she settled on Coll, where she raised her family and taught art at primary school. Her first home on Coll had no electricity or running water, and the nearest neighbor lived two miles away.

Mairi Hedderwick is the author and illustrator of the much loved Katie Morag series of children's books the first of which was published in 1984.

Hedderwick has also written and illustrated several travel books, including Highland Journey and An Eye on the Hebrides.

Loved this story. The main thing that grabbed our attention when we picked it up in the library was the aesthetic setting of the book. The pictures/art captures the island/village perfectly to set the mood. Story is about a girl called Katie Morag and what follows when she snaps her mums favourite necklace by accident. The riddles in the book were quite tricky for even us to figure out. Luckily Katie Morag got it solved. We will surely keep an eye out for more of this series.

Super sweet book with beautiful watercolor illustrations. I love this story because the message is so relatable to young kids and the riddles are fun to solve alongside Katie as well. It is a fun one to read to American children as there are many British words sprinkled throughout.

We love the illustrations, but the moral and literary merit of this particular story are low.

Another story about little Scottish islander Katie Morag, in which she solves four riddles and time spent teaching her little brother Liam to string beads pays off.
