The life Kyla was leading wasn't the one she had imagined for herself. Banished from her Oregon ranch and disguised as a boy, she was riding through Idaho beside a handsome bounty hunter, hoping to convince him to kill the gunslinger who stole her land and her innocence. Once she had dreamed of marrying a man who would honor her independence and cherish her enough to heal her wounds. Now she just dreamed of revenge...
Passion revealed...
Jace Rankin cursed himself for feeling sorry for the ragged boy outside the Silver City saloon. But he swore even louder when he discovered the "boy" was in fact a beauty in a mess of trouble. A man hardened by gun battles and old hurts, Jace wasn't ready to trust the red-haired waif fate had sent him. Yet Kyla awoke a yearning in him that he couldn't ignore. Now he wanted to prove to her that a man's touch could be gentle and a man's love so great that he'd fight for her simply because she asked... even if it broke his heart...
I've been a self-employed working novelist for the past twenty years. Of all the books I've written I've had just one foreign sale, and that was THE IRISH BRIDE, which was translated into Norwegian, where I understand it was a big hit.
I also make jewelry and I'm a fine needlework artist, specializing in embroidery, thread crochet, and sewing. I love to cook, read, entertain friends, decorate, and pursue various crafts.
I live in the Pacific Northwest near the Columbia River, still within 10 miles of my old high school. I have a Great Pyrenees dog, one cat, a finch, and three chickens who all seem to want to be in my small office while I'm trying to work (except the chickens, although they'd be thrilled to get into the house if I let them). Getting up to step around them is like maneuvering an obstacle course, but they are my children and so dear to me. My hours are kind of goofy--I'm just not a morning person and tend to be up late when the rest of the world is sleeping--and QUIET. No phones, faxes, distractions. Just the kids and me, candles burning, and the elevator music coming out of my CD player.
Before I made the leap to full-time writer, I spent about 12 years working for consulting civil engineers. Riprap, anyone? How about a nice detention pond?
Jace Rankin may be short, but he’s nothing to mess with, as the man who was just hauled out of the saloon by the undertaker knows now. He’s a famous bounty hunter in Oregon in the 1890s who, when he shot the man in the saloon, just finished a years long quest to avenge his sister’s murder and is now trying to figure out what to do next. When the snotty-nosed farm boy he just rescued from a gang of bullies offers him money to kill a man who forced him off his ranch, he reluctantly agrees to bring the man to justice, but not to kill him outright. But, first he needs to tell his sister’s widower the news.
Kyla “Kyle” Springer Bailey has been riding the trails and sleeping on the ground for the past month while trying to find Jace. She wants revenge on the man who killed her husband and took her ranch, amongst other crimes, and she’s not so keen on the detour Jace wants to take. But she realizes she’s out of options, so she hides behind her boy persona as best she can and tries to keep pace. When a confrontation along the way gets her shot and Jace discovers that Kyle’s a Kyla, she has to come clean about the *whole* reason she needs this scoundrel dead and hope he’ll still help her.
The book has its share of touching moments and slow-blooming romance. Kyla, we find out, has good reason to fear men and hide behind a boy’s persona. Watching Jace slowly pull her out of that shell and help her conquer her fears was endearing. Her pain was real and deeply-rooted and didn’t just disappear in the face of his sexiness. Neither did his understandable aversion to marriage magically disappear after a round of nookie. Why would a man who’s drifted from town to town for his entire adult life - a man who’s killed his fair share of men along the way - feel he’d make a good husband or father? They’re both the walking wounded and in a unique position to help each other, they just need time to realize it.
However, while it was packed to bursting with my favorite themes - Old West setting, a heroine passing as male, a morally ambiguous hero, wounded souls, road romance, the kitchen sink - there was a certain...distance in the writing that kept me from getting carried away. Both characters were distinct and fully-formed and I couldn't point to any glaring instances of bland telling or anything, I just never felt really invested. I enjoyed it quite a bit, as it was an exciting trip, but I was watching them from far away. I definitely wasn’t on the run alongside them. Add on a hasty and too tidy ending, and the book left me feeling a bit less than completely satisfied.
I enjoyed the book, but I can’t say it was above average. I’d still read another book by the author.
Note: I read the re-released ebook version from Smashwords and noticed there were a lot of formatting errors and missing words. I had to mentally edit as I read for some sentences to make sense. It wasn’t too too bad, but it was a little distracting.
I really had forgotten how much I enjoy Alexis Harrington’s books. I think I last read them back in the 90’s so reading them again is like visiting beloved friends I haven’t seen in years but have very fond memories of. Because it was so long ago that I read them and I’ve read so many since then, the only thing I really remember is the feeling of comfort they give, not so much the story itself. Desperate Hearts is the story of Jace Rankin. He was the bounty hunter from Homeward Hearts who relentlessly pursued the hero from that book. Now Jace has a new target to seek revenge on. He finds and achieves it at the beginning of this story and is at a bit of loose ends a bit as the mission that has consumed him for a number of years is accomplished. He contemplates heading for warmer climates when he rescues a young lad from being bullied. Jace had been harassed all his life himself because of his small stature until he made a name for himself a real badass bounty hunter. It seems the boy, Kyle Springer, had been searching for Jace for his badassness in helping Kyle get revenge and get his home back, the home that had been stolen from him. Jace reluctantly agrees, though he senses something is off about Kyle. Of course in true romance style, Kyle is really Kyla. Jace is angry at first at being duped, but then reluctantly agrees to help Kyla reclaim her life. It’s a simple outline but for me it was so richly done. I loved Jace. I love the fact that he was shorter than your average bear. Once he got past his anger, he was so protective of Kyla. As she slowly begins to trust Jace, her story of abuse comes out and he is so patient with her. He’s truly the strong and silent type that makes for such a great Western hero. He has his own rotten childhood and its warped the way he sees himself, not worthy of love. As well, I thought Kyla makes for an excellent Western heroine. She’d been brutalized and rather than give up and give in, she fights back. She knows she can’t do it herself so she looks for the person who is most capable. She is a bit slow to trust Jace, but with very good reason. As with Jace, her life has been very short on love. I liked that the author included a scene with Chloe and Travis from Homeward Hearts. It looked like we may not get one for a while, but the author didn’t disappoint. As much as I enjoyed the first book in this series, I think I liked this one a little bit more. When I finished it, I was going to move on to a different author and a different genre. But I’m just not done with Alexis Harrington books yet and since I have a few more, I’m revisiting a very dear comfort place.
Final note: As others have mentioned, the formatting for this book isn't the greatest in some spots. There were a few wrong words, misspelled words and even some missing. This kind of thing doesn't bother me at all, but it may for some readers so just a heads up if you are bothered by this. It didn't take away from my enjoyment of this book one iota though.
This book definitely had a crescendo type of flow. It was a very slow build, almost painfully slow. I considered putting this one down after getting about 1/3 of the way into it because it just felt like it was taking forever to get to any kind of point. I stuck with it, though, because I really like this author and I know she usually delivers. And she did. It turned out pretty good. And the rest of the book was very nice.
Alexis Harrinton definitely has a formula to her books for the build-up of the romance and sex, but it's a pattern that really works for me, and it's partly why I enjoy reading her work time and again. In addition, both hero and heroine have pasts that are laced with hardship and trauma. They of course help one another heal, and go on a journey towards figuring out who they are and what they really want - each other. The characters slowly but surely begin to change, and the reader is taken right alongside them as they progress. One of the primary issues I had with this book was that I felt that the ending was a bit too tidy, and too quickly wrapped up.
This book is not as good as its prequel,Homeward Hearts, but it definitely holds its own. It was nice to see Travis and Chloe in this book as well.
Jace Rankin is a bounty hunter with a reputation for getting his man. When a boy who is being bullied by a group of miners asks him to kill a man who forced him off his ranch, Jace agrees that he will bring the guy to justice but not kill him. But first he must make a detour to find a friend.
Kyla Springer has been riding the trails for the last month searching for Jace Rankin. Disguised as a boy, Kyla needs Jace to get revenge on the man who killer her husband and took her ranch. When a confrontation along the way gets her shot, and Jake discovers that the boy is really a woman, she has to come clean about why she wants the scoundrel dead.
I thought his book had a slow beginning, but it turned out to be solid western romance with lots of action and adventure. Jace is a person who has went through his life never knowing love. Kyla is an independent woman who was raped by the book's villain. They are thrown together and must make the best of the situation. I was thoroughly entertained by this book. My rating: 4 Stars.
This might be one of my favorite from Alexis Harrington, though it seemed to be an intensely quick read. There's plenty of drama, but the characters also grow over the course of the story-- I love when that happens!
When I picked this up to read, I didn't realize it was spin off to Alexis Harrington's "Homeward Hearts", which I read a few months ago. This has to be, thus far, my favorite book by Alexis Harrington. I absolutely adored Jace.
Swoon, where are men like this our generation! I love Jace Rankin, what he lacks in size, he more than makes up for in personality! I will definitely read more of her books in the future!
Thoroughly enjoyed reading this story. Two souls that have never really known love are thrust together when she hunts him down to ask him for assistance in regaining her ranch. He is a Bounty Hunter whose reputation was known and feared throughout the territory. At first she is disguised as a boy but when wounded he takes care of her and discovers the boy is actually a female. She is being hunted down by her arch enemy so they both need to be vigilant. They grow to care for each other and eventually fall in love. HEA ending.
I'm usually not very picky when it comes to editing issues, but when they occur this much, it's a very big problem. How can an author use words like "vituperation", but fail to use basic prepositions and conjunctions? It was beyond frustrating to have to try and fill in the blanks. I enjoy Miss Harrington's books, but this was a really big stretch for me. I think I might stop reading her books __ I have __ read like ____ again.
Well first, I want to read EVERYTHING she’s written! She is a tale spinner of the ROMANTIC kind. Sometimes, with romance books, I just wish they wouldn’t DRAG out the story on and on making the male character a hold out in giving all his everything to the female. But, this book kept things moving pretty well.
WHAT I HATED was how riddled with typos it was! It was ridiculous!
The absence of prepositions, pronouns, adjectives, or the lack thereof, in strategic places in your writing, disrupts my basic need to construct the correct English sentence. It disrupts my train of thought and I must reread. This is very annoying.
I have always enjoyed Harrington's books, but this one needs some serious editing. I have never seen her work with so many errors. Otherwise, it was great.
Jace Rankin is a bounty hunter and Kyle/Kyla Springer needs his help. Kyla (dressed as a lad) finds him as Jace is confronting his sister's killer in a saloon. The search for his sister's killer has taken him 3 years. This is a continuation of HOMEWARD HEARTS in which Jace had found that his best friend did not kill Jace's sister. Now that Jace has killed the murder, he doesn't feel a sense of accomplishment. He wonders how he will spend the rest of his years now that his main goal has been met.
Jace agrees to help Kyle (the lad explains that the family ranch was stolen by an evil step-brother and someone was killed), but first, he must tell his best friend that he'd found his sis's killer. Kyle isn't happy but agrees. One of the interesting facts is that Jace is a short man (a hero less than 6 feet, horrors!) who has had to fight bullies all of his life because of his size. He's always been a scrapper.
On the way to the best friend's home, Kyle is gravely injured. When they arrive at the best friend's house, it is abandoned and Jace finds himself caring for the lad -- who turns out to be a young woman. It was nice to have a hero who was less than perfect.
This was a pleasant diversion and a quick read. The characters were compelling and the action kept the story moving along. I get really involved in Alexis Harrington's characters; in this one, I was less caught up than usual. Unfortunately, I read this book first, not knowing that it was the second in a series. Perhaps I would have felt closer to the characters had I read the novels in order. Alexis Harrington always offers a great storyline.
Most reviewers seem to like Jace Rankin. I, not so much. I think he and Kyla were OK together but many things didn't come together for me. She's supposed to be this brave girl who had been on the trail on her own with a gun (that she's already used!) for some time before she caught up with Jace but she still sounded too afraid for him and too wondering of him shooting the bad guys to defend them both. It was irksome. I don't understand why she was sooooo afraid of him, I just didn't get it. The story itself was OK. Definitely not a favourite from AH, but ah, way better than others I've tried to read.
Slow build, very slow... But realistic in a way. Which is commendable. I love the character Jace, the bounty hunter that helps Kayla. Overall an enjoyable read, but nothing special. I would still check the author's other books though, her style is pretty interesting.
