Daphne Drew Mystery #1

You Had Me at Bigfoot

Rate this book
Rookie journalist Daphne and war photographer Clark investigate a missing maid and rumors of Bigfoot sightings—uncovering danger, buried lies, and unexpected romance deep in the Pacific Northwest wilderness.

Rookie investigative journalist Daphne Drew is finally on assignment—though it’s not exactly the hard-hitting story she imagined. Sent to cover a high-society wedding at an opulent Pacific Northwest lodge, Daphne expects floral arrangements and champagne flutes, not whispered rumors of a missing maid . . . or reports of Bigfoot sightings.

She’s not alone. Tagging along is Clark Finklestine-Henry, a decorated war photographer with a haunted past—and a camera sharp enough to catch more than just candid reception shots. Together with their loyal dogs, Daphne and Clark begin to suspect something much darker is lurking in the forested shadows of the hotel grounds.

As wedding guests arrive and tension simmers beneath the surface, Daphne and Clark uncover a tangled web of lies, legends, and lost fortune—one that ties the vanished maid, some returning friends, and the infamous DB Cooper together in a mystery that’s anything but folklore.

This is a fun romance/mystery combo that will hearken back to the mysteries some of us read during our childhoods.

The note to the reader, which prefaces the story itself, notes that You Had Me at Bigfoot was inspired by the author's love of Nancy Drew and Scooby Doo. And I could definitely see that as I read this book. The nods toward Nancy Drew almost brought about a certain level of nostalgia (sorry...I never watched Scooby Doo...), because I remember being a kid, reading Nancy Drew, and wishing I could solve a mystery or two with her.

Daphne and Clark are fun characters with well-rounded arcs. I enjoyed how they were opposite in so many respects, but instead of that being a rub, the author used that to draw them together. Hannah seems like a great-aunt everyone would like to have, and while I'm allergic to dogs, I'd happily take Tobey or Fidget as a pet.

The setting is also fun. We go from a run-down magazine building to a quirky hotel that's trapped between being a Bigfoot museum and a grand place located in Oregon.

As the title suggests, Bigfoot--or the concept of Bigfoot--plays quite a large role in the plot. Some characters believe he exists, while others don't. It's tongue-in-cheek and never makes a definitive claim, which is perfect whether you're a believer or a skeptic.

The romance is clean. There is a delightful slow-burn, a fun twist on the "only one room" trope, and some kisses.

Now for the content warnings. This book leans into the question of if the paranormal exists. That would usually make me leery, but the way this is handled is more in the vein of Nancy Drew/Trixie Belden than an actual, serious, in-depth take. That said, a character mentions a friend believed he could speak with ghosts (to an extent). What I wasn't fond of was the horoscope mention. It wasn't necessary and lent nothing to the chapter in which it appears.

Sensitive readers should note that there is some violence. A bomb threat and holdup are mentioned; there's a poisoning; a murder; a kidnapping; and some injuries. All similar to what you would find in the old detective stories.

You Had Me at Bigfoot is a fun story of a journalist and a photographer who find themselves in the middle of an unexpected mystery. Perfect for fans of Nancy Drew, Hardy Boys, and Trixie Belden. I look forward to book two.

A fun and fairly fast-paced adventure (rather than a mystery) with lots of cute homages to both Nancy Drew and Scooby Doo. It handles a couple of legendary, conspiracy-laden topics (such as Bigfoot) with a light touch. Perfect for readers in the mood for a somewhat nostalgic, quirky romp.

Starting this series from book one felt like catching myself doing yoga voluntarily. Who is she. What happened. But honestly, You Had Me at Bigfoot got me almost immediately because this book understands one very important truth: if you put an anxious woman with career problems in a foggy forest hotel and whisper “cryptid sightings,” she is going to ruin her own life investigating it. And I support women’s rights, but more importantly, women’s wrongs.

Daphne Drew rolls into this luxury Pacific Northwest lodge expecting to cover a society wedding for her aunt’s magazine, which already sounds like my personal nightmare because rich wedding people behave like they’re being held hostage by centerpieces. But within five minutes there’s a missing maid, weird Bigfoot rumors, suspicious guests stomping around acting guilty for recreational purposes, and a photographer named Clark Finklestine-Henry following her around looking haunted and attractive. The man has the name of a Muppet accountant and the energy of someone who’s seen war and also knows how to fix your WiFi. Dangerous combination.

And this book is absolutely operating on Scooby-Doo logic in the BEST way. There’s a mystery van. There are dogs. There are hidden passages. At one point I fully expected someone to yell “let’s split up gang,” which honestly would have improved several decision-making processes here because these people repeatedly hear terrifying noises in the woods and respond with “we should absolutely walk toward that.” The confidence level of fictional investigators needs to be studied by scientists.

What I actually liked most, though, was that underneath all the cryptid nonsense, Daphne’s kind of a mess in a way that felt real. She’s coming off getting professionally screwed over after someone stole her podcast idea, and she’s trying so hard to act like she’s fine that it loops around into visible panic. She has that very specific twenty-something exhaustion where every inconvenience feels like proof your life is collapsing, which honestly pairs beautifully with “possible Sasquatch-related murder.” Growth through trauma and forest humidity.

Clark really worked for me too because he doesn’t have that annoying hyper-competent romance hero thing where he acts like the main character’s emotional support LinkedIn profile. He’s quieter, sadder, weirdly patient, and the chemistry between them feels natural because they actually talk to each other like human beings instead of two sexy robots generated in a trope factory. Their relationship sneaks up on you a little. One minute they’re arguing about dogs and bad coffee, the next minute you’re sitting there invested in their emotional healing like you pay taxes in this fictional town.

The mystery itself is doing THE MOST. We’ve got Bigfoot lore, missing persons, hidden treasure, family secrets, DB Cooper references, creepy lodge drama, and enough suspicious behavior to make every wedding guest seem like they’ve committed at least one felony. Sometimes the plot feels like it drank three Red Bulls and sprinted into the woods barefoot, but honestly the sheer commitment to the chaos kind of won me over. The book never takes itself too seriously, which is exactly the right move when your premise is “hot people investigate cryptids between wedding events.”

Also, the atmosphere here? Incredible. This entire book smells like pine trees, rain, and expensive lodge candles named things like Pacific Midnight or Lumberjack Tears. The setting is carrying a knife behind its back the entire time. Every hallway feels haunted. Every trail sounds like someone’s about to discover either a body or a secret tunnel. Sometimes both.

Now, did every single plot thread land perfectly? Not entirely. A couple reveals felt a little “surprise, here’s more crime!” and the Bigfoot angle is definitely more campy than genuinely eerie. But honestly, that 3.5-star sweet spot is where cozy mysteries thrive for me. Weird enough to entertain me, grounded enough that I still cared about the characters, and just self-aware enough to keep the whole thing from collapsing under the weight of its own nonsense.

By the end, I was fully onboard for Daphne and Clark becoming those people who accidentally solve murders together forever while denying they’re in love for, conservatively, six more books. And frankly the dogs deserve salary negotiations.

You Had Me at Bigfoot is Book 1 in the Daphne Drew Mystery series. I was immediately intrigued by not only the title, but the entire premise.

With a mashup of a name like Daphne Drew, how could you not be a mystery-lover? A new job as a rookie journalist not only offers her an adorable meet-cute, but gives her a dog companion and a former war photographer to accompany her on the first assignment–to cover a high-society wedding at a lodge, rumored to have Bigfoot sightings. Mysteries abound and Daphne and Clark are in their elements, and I adored it all.

Daphne is exactly the type of character who is easy to become obsessed with–and she lives up to her namesakes. I quickly became engrossed in her story, especially once Clark entered the picture. The two of them make a highly entertaining, mystery solving, crime fighting team, and the romantic sparks that ignite in the midst of this story was the cherry on top.

With an energetic, positive personality, Daphne is always ready to jump right in to find clues and solve the case, while Clark is more reserved and hesitant. Even their dogs, Toby and Fidget, made me think of Scooby Doo and Scrappy. This is a brilliant start to a new series!

If you love Scooby Doo, Nancy Drew, and/or the X-Files, this is the perfect story for you.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley and Shadow Mountain Publishing. I was under no obligation to leave a positive review.

You Had Me at Bigfoot was just plain fun. It really feels like a perfect teen beach or poolside read. Light, entertaining, and easy to get lost in. Daphne Drew is a rookie journalist who thinks she’s headed to a glamorous high society wedding at a Pacific Northwest lodge, but instead she ends up tangled in rumors about a missing maid and possible Bigfoot sightings.

Of course nothing is ever quite what it seems. She ends up working alongside Clark Finklestine Henry, a war photographer with a bit of a haunted past, and the two of them start digging into what is really going on behind the polished wedding surface. What starts as quirky folklore and gossip slowly turns into something a lot more layered and a little darker than expected.

This is exactly the kind of Shadow Mountain Proper Romance I have come to expect. It is clean, sweet, and very readable, with just enough mystery and romance mixed in to keep things moving without ever feeling heavy. I also really liked the setting. The remote lodge in the Pacific Northwest gives it that isolated, slightly eerie feel that works so well for this kind of story.

Overall it is just an easy, entertaining escape. Nothing overly complicated, just a fun mystery with heart.

What a fun story! The author did a great job of paying homage to a childhood love of Scooby Doo and Nancy Drew while also telling a fun story for adults that was engaging and not too silly or dumb.

If you didn't know, the Pacific Northwest is notorious for Bigfoot sightings and lore! The mighty Sasquatch is everywhere! You'll have your own sightings if you look carefully. Seriously. He's everywhere. Ok, statues of him, and touristy paraphernalia. Lol! But keep on your toes just in case you have a real sighting of him. That's what Daphne and Clark are told to watch for when they're at their assignment to cover the biggest wedding of the season. What they encounter is anything but what they were expecting for a wedding. A missing employee, crazy stories, overhearing whispered conversations, finding Bigfoot costumes, shattered glass windows, danger, lies, and two dogs who help to sniff everything out!

This book was so much fun and it made me feel like I was back living in an area I used to live in. I was right there enjoying the adventure next to our intrepid reporter, her photographer sidekick, and two scooby-doo like dogs! Daphne don't go into the woods by yourself. Just sayin'! And get ready for a mystery and a crazy history to unfold!

Content: Clean. Mild moments of peril.

Happy Reading!!!

What a fun story! Cozy mysteries are not my go-to, but I really enjoyed this one and am excited to read more about Daphne and Clark!
I enjoyed Daphne’s POV. She was in a transition period and feeling a bit adrift. However, she was also determined and upbeat. I admired her resilience as she focused on her new position with Hannah’s company. Daphne felt very classic mystery and I loved the references to Nancy Drew and Scooby Doo. Clark was also really fun and I loved their dynamic. He was the practical and realistic foil to Daphne’s more vibrant energy and love of paranormal. They meshed well together and I loved how they complemented each other.
The story was a lot of fun and I appreciated the cozy vibes. It was definitely an intriguing mystery, but wasn’t too intense either. I also loved the side characters in this! Hannah and Jilly were so sweet and I loved the dogs. All the characters at the hotel were also so interesting and really made the world feel real. I was rooting for Daphne and Clark to solve the mystery and it was an altogether enjoyable read! This is a cozy murder mystery with nondescriptive mystery elements.
I received an ARC.

You Had Me at Bigfoot is a cute cozy mystery that doesn’t take itself too seriously. If you prefer light hearted mysteries this is for you. It is more of a treasure hunt mystery with the Sasquatch element a footnote to the overall plot. Bigfoot themed vs Bigfoot focused? I enjoyed the sleuthing and the fun development of the relationship between Daphne and Clark.

The vibes:
Pacific Northwest trees
Wooded resort
Lost treasure
Murder investigation
Missing persons
Cute dogs
Touch of romance (PG, only kissing)
Investigative journalism
Scooby doo and Nancy Drew references

This will be the right book for the right crowd. It is quite cheesy at times, so know thyself and what you like in books when you pick this one up.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this advance copy. All opinions are my own.

4.5 stars!
If you grew up reading Nancy Drew books and spending Saturday mornings watching Scooby-Doo, this book will feel like a nostalgic treat. Rookie journalist Daphne Drew heads to a remote lodge to cover a high-society wedding with war photographer Clark Finklestein-Henry (that's quite the name!). Their relationship gets off to an adorably awkward start with one of the funniest meet-awkward scenes I've read in a while. Have you ever tried to walk a dog that has other plans? From there, what should have been a simple wedding assignment turns into an investigation involving a missing maid, rumors of Bigfoot, hidden secrets, and plenty of suspects.

Daphne and Clark were absolutely adorable together. They're a perfect opposites-attract pair: Daphne is energetic, optimistic, and always ready to chase a lead, while Clark is quieter, observant, and steady. Even their dogs, Toby and Fidget, mirror their personalities with their own opposite temperaments, which added more charm to the story.

One of my favorite details was the description of the room Daphne and Clark had to share at the lodge—complete with a secret passageway! The mystery itself kept me guessing. There were plenty of suspects, enough twists to keep me second-guessing everyone, and I never figured out the culprit before the reveal.

I switched between reading the book and listening to the audiobook, and I think Sydni Bringhurst did a fantastic job with the narration. She gave each character a distinct voice and really brought the story to life, making the audiobook just as enjoyable as reading it myself.

I love Nancy Campbell Allen's books, so I'm thrilled that this is the first book in a new cozy mystery series. If future installments are as entertaining as this one, I'll happily follow Daphne, Clark, Toby, and Fidget on many more adventures.

I received an advanced copy from the publisher Shadow Mountain and a digital copy from NetGalley. I listened to the audiobook on Deseret Bookshelf. All opinions in this review are my own.

This is the first book in the Daphne Drew series. It is a kisses only light romance more cozy mystery.

Since this starts a series, I can see more romance as the books progress. I'd definitely continue the series.

I thought it was a cute story. I don't try to figure out mysteries, so I enjoyed the ride as the author made the reveals.

This book claims to be a mixture of Scooby-Doo and Nancy Drew. I didn't read Nancy Drew and wasn't allowed to watch much Scooby-Doo. From what I've gathered in general, that would be a fair assessment.

Not a spoiler, due to the title of the book, but a message about content. The characters talk about paranormal activities. For the most part that is in reference to Bigfoot. There's one mention of a possible ghost, but there's nothing besides a flashing light attributed to that rather vaguely. One reason we couldn't watch much Scooby-Doo was because of the "ghost" themes. Most times I hear that the ghosts were something else anyway. But that's a topic for another day...

I did enjoy the audiobook. It is narrator by a female since the story is told in first person from her point of view.

You Had Me at Bigfoot by Nancy Campbell Allen

"I'm seriously wondering if this is how I'm going to die."

This was a really fun mystery debut by Nancy Campbell Allen. I loved Clark's character and his unwavering support of Daphne. Their romance is so sweet. Daphne is a quirky character who believes in Bigfoot.
I really enjoyed the mystery aspect and the author had me guessing.

This was such a fun read! I loved that it didn't follow the usual mystery formula of starting with a murder. Instead, it felt like a lighthearted adventure that slowly built in suspense. Things do get a little more serious toward the end with a missing person and an attempted murder, but it never felt too dark.

I also loved all the Nancy Drew and Scooby-Doo connections, plus the Bigfoot and D.B. Cooper references. They made the mystery even more fun. I highly recommend this cozy mystery that's entertaining, a little quirky, and doesn't take itself too seriously, 5 stars! Thanks to Shadow Mountain Publishing for an eARC to use for my review.

Fun homage to Nancy Drew and Scooby Doo. Entertaining adventure story featuring two very likable main characters. Aspects of the plot, especially regarding motives, require a suspension of disbelief. Highly recommend if you’re in the mood for something light and easy to read. I look forward to continuing the series in the future.

If you grew up loving Nancy Drew mysteries or Scooby-Doo adventures, this cozy mystery has a fun, nostalgic feel that will probably make you smile🤍

The mystery itself was entertaining, and I enjoyed following along as everything unfolded. It had all the charm of a classic whodunit with a cozy atmosphere that made it an easy read.

For me personally, I found myself wishing for a little more depth in the relationship between the main characters. While I enjoyed the mystery, I never fully connected with the romance the way I had hoped, which made it a little harder for me to become completely invested in their story.

But Toby? 🥹 He was easily my favorite character! I have a soft spot for dogs in books, and he added so much heart and charm to the story.

Overall, if you enjoy cozy mysteries with small-town charm, nostalgic detective vibes, and a touch of romance, this one is worth checking out.

I had a blast reading this fun and entertaining mystery. It had me laughing out loud in spots and putting my detective hat on in others.

Things got off to a bit of a rocky start between Daphne and Clark after a hilarious and slightly embarrassing first meeting. But I thought they made a great team after getting over that initial run in. I really liked them both. I loved Daphne’s aunt Hannah. She was quite the character. I also adored the dogs. It was great seeing Daphne warm up to them.

The mystery was good. I had my suspicions about who the guilty party was early on, but there were plenty of other suspects, which had me second-guessing things.

I was a little bummed that there wasn’t more Bigfoot, but it was an enjoyable read nonetheless. I really liked all the nods to Nancy Drew and Scooby Doo. I’m hoping there are many more books to come in this series. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys cozy mysteries.

I received a copy of this book and voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and comments are my honest opinion.

3.5 Stars.

The vibes:
- Book 1 in interconnected standalones
- Bigfoot
- Mystery romance
- Pacific Northwest setting
- Closed door (kisses only)

My thoughts:
There were some really fun parts of this story. I loved the mystery set up. I liked the characters. I enjoyed the dogs. I loved the PNW setting so much.

The ending / conclusion of the mystery definitely lost me, and I didn’t love the wrap up there. I also really wanted to feel a bit more between the leads. I’m not sure what was missing for me, but I still enjoyed the read for most of the first half.

I think this was a fresh spin in the romance category, and I really love when romance and mystery come together. I’d definitely read more from this author / series.

Nancy Campbell Allen is one of my favorite authors and I was thrilled when I heard she was releasing a cozy mystery. You Had Me at Big Foot was an absolute delight and I had so much fun reading this story.

Daphne Drew is an investigative journalist with dreams of a podcast highlighting unsolved cases. She takes a job working for her beloved aunt where she is partnered up with Clark Henry, a former military photographer. Daphne is relatable, funny, and smart. Clark was an excellent hero and I loved their chemistry. They might be my new favorite amateur sleuth couple. I already can’t wait to watch their romance progress in future stories.

I loved the mashups of Scooby Doo and things like Nancy Drew in the story. It took all my favorite things about these classic cozy mysteries and hammed them up while also delivering an excellent mystery. This was the type of book that draws you in for both the romance and the need to know who dunnit, while also making you laugh out loud. And since I don’t want to spoil any of it, I’ll just end my review by saying I highly recommend this book and give it all the stars. This is one cozy mystery you will not want to miss.

Definetely A Scooby Doo Vibe

With a name like Daphne Drew, Daphne definitely leans into her love of solving mysteries. Like her Scooby Doo namesake, Daphne’s mystery has a bit of the paranormal involved, in this case Bigfoot sightings at a lodge in the Pacific Northwest. This book is light and funny. There’s a good start to a lasting romance with Daphne’s coworker, Clark, and two pooches who keep them on their toes. This is a great book for people who don’t like to take their mysteries too seriously.
