After an arranged marriage, Konstantin and Suzana must find a way to meet the demands of a conquering Ottoman sultan amid a torrent of setbacks and dangers much closer to their Balkan home.
The Balkans, 1373
A devastating battle claimed the lives of Konstantin's father, uncle, and most of their Serb army, leaving him to rule as a vassal of the Ottoman sultan, a role he is wholly unprepared for. Between war, famine, and a persistent band of brigands, Konstantin is nearly bankrupt. He will need to find a wealthy bride to marry if he is to have any hope of saving his lands and securing his future.
A betrothal to Suzana, the daughter of a prosperous merchant, is soon arranged, and upon meeting her, Konstantin immediately feels hope that their marriage could someday grow into love. Yet, from the moment of Konstantin and Suzana's betrothal, enemies threaten their lives, outlaws prey on their lands, and the terrors of Suzana's abusive past haunt their fragile new relationship. As this onslaught of threats closes in, the two face challenges that will test their love, their faith, and their hope to save their people and win their freedom from the heavy weight of Ottoman oppression.
I love books, so that makes Goodreads my favorite social media site. As a reader, I enjoy a variety of books. As a writer, I create historical novels with a wholesome mix of action, adventure, and romance. My stories have earned Whitney Awards, Foreword Indies Finalists positions, Readers’ Favorite Gold and Silver medals, a Historical Novel Society Editor’s Choice Selection, and a Praiseworthy Award.
I'm a wife and a mother of three, and I've called Washington State, Utah, and Alaska home. I'm usually reading a couple books at once and working on multiple writing projects too. Other than that, my life is pretty ordinary. I'm grateful for that. I'll let the characters in my books have all the adventures.
About My Goodreads Ratings: I joined Goodreads as a reader first, but since I’m an author too, I’ve made some changes to how I rate books. For fiction, I'll give a book 5 stars if I enjoyed every page. Otherwise, I'll leave the rating blank. For nonfiction, 5 star books are ones I enjoyed enough that I’d like to read them again. They’re books I connected with and highly recommend to others. 4 star books are good books that I thought were worth reading once, and they’re also recommended.
What a great arranged marriage story! I also loved the mystery element of who was the threat to Konstantin and Suzana. Konstantin is new to being a Župan, and he is tasked with not only protecting and caring for his people in a time of war, he now has a new wife to protect. Suzana has been abused in the past and has a hard time trusting her new husband only at first but as they get to know one another and after her life is threatened she confides in him and trusts him. I really loved both of these characters. They are so strong and work together well. They have great faith in each other and God. As battles, threats and more come their way they get through it together. Overall, a great story and I recommend! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.75
Content: battles(with killings described), past sexual assault (referenced), physical abuse(referenced), miscarriage
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
“Love was something to be protected, relished, and used as a source of strength, even when everything else felt hard. Maybe especially then.”
Beneath a Crescent Shadow is a masterpiece of storytelling! Full of romance, intrigue, betrayal, war, forgiveness, and reconciliation, this sweeping story was impossible to put down. I love the way A.L. Sowards brings history to life. She infuses her stories with compelling characters, fascinating historical detail, and a touch of faith that pulls me in every time.
Set in the Balkans in the late 1300’s, this story portrays the struggles of Konstantin, a Zupan (Serbian Lord), and his people as they survive famine, arson, attacking brigands, and oppression from Ottoman overlords. On the verge of bankruptcy and needing to come up with funds to pay the Sultan, Konstantin agrees to an arranged marriage to fill his empty coffers. Suzana, the beautiful stranger he marries, soon becomes his treasured wife as he gently breaks down her walls and offers her love, acceptance, faith, and family. But, Kostantin is forced to fight for the Sultan and the fierce battles and aftermath leave him shaken. Facing unimaginable losses and betrayals, he and Suzana must work together to save their marriage and their people from the onslaught of rivals and the Ottoman Empire.
I loved Konstantin’s & Suzana’s love story. Suzana has a troubled past and I enjoyed how tender and patient Konstantin was with her. Their marriage is filled with ups and downs as they face moments of joy & sorrow. I loved how they learned to face trials together and grew in their love. I loved the messages of forgiveness, reconciliation, and faith. I also loved the side characters and the richness they added to the story. Young Ivan & Danilo provide some fun, lighter moments and I can’t wait to read their stories.
The tumultuous battles were portrayed in such a realistic yet tasteful way. I felt like I was right there and found myself furiously turning the pages during these action packed scenes. I appreciated that although the battles are fierce, the author doesn’t include unnecessary graphic detail. Beyond the Sultan’s battles, there are traitors in their midst and I was shocked and surprised by the depth of the betrayal.
All the stars for this brilliantly written, beautiful story! Highly recommend to historical fiction/romance fans! I can’t wait to read the next book in the series. Though this is the first book in the series, I recommend reading the prequel After the Crescent Strike which provides more insight into these characters and the history. I received an advanced complimentary copy from the author & publisher. All opinions are my own and voluntarily provided.
CW: (Note that all of these are mildly portrayed.) Violence of war & its aftermath, assault, loss of a child, physical abuse, drunkenness, suggested off page intimacy between a married couple.
As someone from the Balkans (Serbia), I'm really curious about this book/series and what inspired the author to write about my country specifically, and during this historical period too. My bet is some of our epic poetry, someone please confirm!! Hah. Anyway, Shadow Mountain is one of my favourite publishers so I'm trusting this will be good.
If you want to read about incredibly researched periods in time, you need to become an A.L. Sowards fan!
Beneath a Crescent Strike takes place in 1373 medieval Serbia! Konstantin is forced to be a young vassal to the Ottoman Empire after their lands have been conquered and his father is lost in battle. Years later — after hardship sweeps over his lands — he is forced into a marriage of convenience to save his people, but it just might be the thing that also saves his weary soul.
Suzanna is a character that had massive demons in her past, I loved watching her learn to trust in Konstantin who proves that not all men are the same. Their love is slow burn and beautiful as they become the best of friends, to confidants to a true marriage full of love and intimacy.
I’m just always in awe with Amanda’s attention to rich historical detail. I learned so much about the history and culture of this time. There were battle scenes that had me in their vicious grip, but also softer emotional scenes that endeared me to her sweet characters.
This is a story about a marriage that must work together to overcome obstacles of upheaval, corruption and war. Nothing comes easy, but through faith and steady devotion they are able to maintain hope when all seems lost.
Another fantastic read and I cannot wait for the next installment.
Another phenomenal historical fiction from A.L. Sowards. If you haven't read any of her books yet, I can't recommend them enough. Especially if you enjoy history, fabulous characters, and storylines that pull you in and don't let go even after the book is finished. Trust me, you won't be disappointed!
This is the first book in a new series. There is a prequel novella, After the Crescent Strike, that gives a little bit of backstory of the Ottoman Empire conquering the Serbs and what led to Konstantin becoming the current vassal of his region and in servitude to the Sultan. It's a fabulous read as well but does not have to be read prior to reading this one. But I recommend reading it because it was a fantastic book as well! I read it then quickly dove into my arc of this one! And let me tell you that as soon as I finished reading this book I was telling my book besties that I needed more!!! But now I'm going to be patient as I wait for the second book to release in January 2025. I'll just have to come back and read the prequel novella and this one while I wait! Definitely worth it!!!
Konstantin is a wonderful character. I loved his character arc. The struggles and stressors that he experiences and feels due to being the vassal (leader) of his people and trying to protect them, make sure there is money in their coffers-enough to care for his people and to pay tribute to the Sultan- and guiding his younger siblings in their roles as well. Imagine his surprise when his grandfather arranges a marriage with Suzana, the daughter of a wealthy merchant, to help Konstantin build up his coffers again.
Suzana and Konstantin are my favorite part of this book. Don't get me wrong, I loved the whole book, but their storyline together and the ups and downs that their budding relationship/marriage encounters was so well written. So many emotions that they go through due to their relationship, family, war, brigands, danger and so much more, will have you captivated while reading. I was hooked. And like I said previously, I need more! So much more with these two characters! But I'm very excited to see what the next book will bring and who's story we will watch develop and come to life in our imaginations thanks to the very talented writing of this author!
Beautifully written story about a powerful group of people and a powerful love story that will have you feeling all of the emotions and possibly shedding a few tears and most definitely cheering on these characters.
Content: Clean. This book does deal with an arranged marriage. There are some kisses and some off-page intimacy between a married couple but nothing graphic or in detail. It is a very sweet and clean love story. It does have some Christian fiction elements in it as the characters turn to God and pray to Him, trust Him to guide and direct and bless them. These elements are definitely what the people of the time period would have done. The book does have elements of war so there are battles and sword fights and death and blood. There is talk of pillaging as well and some mention of rape but not in graphic detail. There is mention some talk of PTSD for a couple characters but was written very well and in a sensitive manor. The author really did a great job of keeping this a clean read even with some of these more sensitive topics. I would let my teenagers read this book (I am pretty conservative in what I read and what I let them read).
I received a copy from the publisher, Shadow Mountain Publishing, via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.
I love a story filled with rich human emotion, strong characters of heart and soul, and a thrilling, on-the-edge-of-your-seat plot. There was betrayal, mystery, tentative yet blossoming love, close knit family and battles for kingdoms & power— plus masterful storytelling! So this was a delight to read! The entire cast of characters jumped off the page to entertain me and the backdrop of medieval Serbia was atmospheric and immersive, transporting me to worlds of old.
I don’t read the trope of arranged marriage very often so I especially loved the gentle friendship Suzana and Konstantin forged in the beginning of their new marriage and how it unfolded into a more passionate union. The entrusting of their scars and fears to each other was so tender and sweet.
Content: fade to black, no language, parental abuse, rape (in the past, not graphically described.) PTSD, miscarriage, war scenes.
Many thanks to the author for sending me a #gifted copy of the book. It is truly stunning!
I have to confess I picked this up on a wild whim. It’s been many moons since I read anything related to the Ottomen Empire (hellooooooo, high school history textbook), and it’s frankly never compelled me like other historical eras did. But Sowards took an unfamiliar era, region, and history (seriously, I’ve never heard of a fictional book set in this time period) and danced it into life. I was gripped!
Konstantin and Suzana were precious. A marriage of convenience/arranged marriage results in love and I’m here for it. Also, K is such a gentleman. Asking his wife if he can kiss her—gets me every time. 🫠
It’s culturally rich and evocative even if the unfamiliarity was hard to grasp at times. There’s a hair-raising mystery about multiple assassination attempts & betrayal all nestled in the middle of a story with characters you can root for.
I can’t wait for the next book in the series!!
*Thank you to NetGalley, the author, and the publisher for the complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a positive review. These are my honest thoughts and opinions.
Absolutely captivating story about young love in a time of war.
Set during the Ottoman Empire's invasion into the Balkans, Konstantin and Suzana enter into an arranged marriage. As the leader of his failing kingdom Konstantin needs money and the only way to get that is through marrying Suzana. With her dowry they work together to make sure their people don't starve and have enough to keep them afloat.
From the first time they met Konstantin and Suzana fell in love. They knew the other would make their life complete but first they have to overcome many challenges, including multiple assasination attemps.
As Suzana learns the meaning of family and love, Konstantin is pulled away to fight the Sulatan's war, where he experiences a myriad of traumas that puts a strain on their developing relationship.
I cannot get over how emotionl this story was. Suzana comes from a background of abuse and just seeing her bloom in an enviroment of love and stability was gorgeous. And Konstantin's relationship with his family was so heartwarming. The extreme amount of grief his family has gone through is unimaginable, but his ability to see hope and love through it all was incredible.
I also found the action in this book extremely engaging. I was on the edge of my seat in all the battles and was so nervous!!! The conflict at the end was so scary and I had no idea how it was gonna go. Even though this book is set in a political landscape, I was glad there wasn't a huge amount of it and none of it was confusing.
All in all this book has been an incredible read and I cannot wait to read the next one!
I was impressed by the details and descriptions in this novel. It was a story that was gripping and had me sitting on the edge of my seat. A novel set in the time of the Balkans and Ottoman time periods. Konstantin and Suzana are betrothed in an arranged marriage ceremony. Konstantin is young and left in charge of his people at an extreme cost with so many losses. Suzana has endured abuse from her father since her mother's death. He has been unkind and hurtful. Suzana is weary of her betrothed husband's family because she hasn't seen the love of a father. She fears that Konstantin will be as abusive or worse than her father. The battles in this novel are nail-biting worthy. I loved this book and the prequel 'After The Crescent Strike', which tells the back story and was also very well written. I can't wait to read the next book in this series. This is historical fiction at its best.
I knew nothing about 14th century Balkan history before I started this book. Now I know slightly more than nothing. It was all fascinating.
I roll my eyes at insta-love in books, but here I am, instantly loving Konstantin from his very first introduction.
I loved the themes of forgiveness, grace, and acceptance throughout this book. I loved watching an arranged marriage turn into a true partnership. I loved the side characters and hope they each get their own stories.
I had some minor quibbles with some bits in the middle of the book, mostly war description-related, but this was absolutely a stay up past my bedtime multiple nights in a row book for me. I immediately borrowed book 2, so I won't have to wait long before seeing these wonderful characters again.
A.L. Sowards does it again with this fantastic historical fiction! I love that this is going to be a series! A look into the Serbs and Ottomans during the 1300s. A story that will keep you on the edge of your seat through the action packed adventure from cover to cover!
I received an ARC through Netgalley and all opinions are my own.
Thank you TLC and Shadow Mountain Pub for the #gifted finished copy to read and review.
I know it’s not super clear from the amount of romance I read and review on this platform, but I love historical fiction. I love learning how people lived in a different time. Different clothes, customs, culture and morals. I find all of it so fascinating.
This book takes place in The Balkans in the 1300’s and it’s not a time or place I’m super familiar with. The author did such an incredible job with describing the setting while also endearing the characters to me.
Expect —> historical fiction, 1300’s, romance subplot, arranged marriage, war
Konstantin and Suzana are wonderfully deep. Though strangers, they build a beautiful friendship. Their lives are constantly in peril but they are resourceful and consistent in their efforts.
I was immediately captivated by this story and these characters and this beautiful love story. I cannot wait for the next book in this series.
I gave this a high 4 ⭐️. Its was a well written historical fiction that had lots of suspense and romance. I really knew nothing about this time period and found it interesting. The churches and culture were picturesque in my mind while I read and the war was a real and painful account. Although this book is over 350 pages I felt like I barely got to know the characters in it and look forward to the next one. Thanks Shadow Mountain via NetGalley.
This book. I devoured it in 2 days, my friends. A physical book. And I’m a mom of 5 kids. I don’t usually have much time to read physical books. Basically a long-winded way of telling you this was SO GOOD! I couldn’t put it down.
It was fascinating to get a glimpse of how life may have been during the late 1300s in Serbia—what they ate, marriage ceremonies, how the areas were ruled, and religious practices. This story has light Christian themes of finding God and praying to Him in times of need.
There was lots of action and great battle scenes. I think this is a part of the writing where the author really excels. I felt like I could picture these scenes playing out in my head. At the time of the book, the Ottoman Empire had taken over this part of Serbia and the political climate was so interesting.
The romance is more of a subplot to the story, but it was so well done. Arranged marriage, anyone? 🤌🏻 I loved Konstantin and Suzana!
I also loved all of the side characters, especially little Ivan! I’m so excited that we get his story next. 👏🏻
Oooo y’all know I’m a sucker for arranged marriages and I adored this one so dang much. I loved Konstantin and Suzana. They were incredible on their own and the chemistry between them was palpable.
I loved how strong Suzana was. And that all of the terrible hands she had been dealt didn’t deter her from being open to the softness and joy of a new path before her. I loved her ability to work with others and her resilient and tender nature was incredibly endearing.
And Konstantin?? A cinnamon roll of a Zupan who is also obsessed with his wife? Say less. I loved how he was balanced. Showing up to take down enemies when needed, and also working hard to show Suzana that he was a safe place to land. And when they both found comfort in each other I was a goner.
I love clearly well researched historicals and this was amazing. I felt like I was a part of this world, and learned a lot more about the time period and battles between vassals. There were betrayals and twists, perfectly scripted action scenes, and quiet moments of forgiveness and love. I loved all of the themes and care that went into the beautifully crafting of this story. I can’t wait for book two!
Overall audience notes: - Historical Fiction + Romance - Language: none - Romance: closed door between a married couple - Violence: moderate-high - Content Warnings: mentions of rape (recounted, not in detail, but definitely mentioned), miscarriage, loss of life, battle/war themes
There’s nothing I appreciate more than a well-researched novel and it was very apparent that AL Sowards did her homework. I was transported to the late 1300s and plopped into a world of war, oppression and battle. I loved these characters so much and grew to know, respect and care for them in surprising ways.
This time in history was full of battles and betrayal, but they are portrayed in very tasteful ways here. Nothing is overly violent and graphic/gory, yet the message of this era is very clear. I felt that I really got a taste for this life and it would have been a very dangerous and difficult time to live in.
Konstantin and Suzana are matched in an arranged marriage and the way they grew individually and as a couple was so endearing. I love how the right amount of romance and connection is added to this author’s historical fictions and this story is no exception. I felt a bond to this group of people and was captivated by the intrigue and all they endured. Not only is this a tale of mashed-up history, but the time period comes alive because of the characters. This is exactly the type of history I enjoy best and I can’t wait to discover what’s next for this crew.
Content: talk of battles; some romance; talk of miscarriage; religious elements
*I received a complimentary copy. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own and were voluntarily given*
This is Konstantin's story, who was a young man in the prequel novella. We already know his backstory and the problems that came for him and his people after the death of his father. As a result, he needs to wed someone of means.
Suzana comes with a large dowry as her father is a rich merchant. Despite the arranged marriage, there's a sparkle of hope that real affection will grown between them. The slow-burn friendship-to-love was a treat to read.
I like this series and the history. It's very fresh to read about an area and time period that are rarely depicted in this genre. Highly recommend.
I received a copy from the publisher via NetGalley and this is my honest opinion.
This was a very fun, enjoyable medieval book! It was full of action and love, forgiveness and second chances. 🩷
Set in medieval times 1373, Suzana and Konstantin's betrothal is arranged, so it's not out of love at first...but it was beautiful to watch them very quickly fall in love, and work through battles together, including Suzana's past. Families and friends came together to fight battles together, to love each other, to work towards what they wanted for their future.
Suzana's struggle to accept love was very relatable, and her walk through it was so raw and encouraging, and the reminder to always follow your heart with love, and never leave them behind, don't push them away. 🩷
*I will add that I wouldn't recommend this for younger teens, there was mention of love between the couple & what they went through with their child.
If you enjoy a faith-filled medieval book, marriage of convenience trope, and beautiful love & forgiveness, then I highly recommend this one for you! 💕
*I received a paperback copy for review, all opinions are my own

Special thanks to A. L. Sowards for a gifted copy of the book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
“‘Love is hard to measure.’ He gestured to a nearby lithos of water. ‘That is water. It is wet, and there is enough there to soak you through. The sea is also water, but it’s much larger and much deeper. Just because the sea is larger, it doesn’t mean that a raindrop is not also water. Love is also like that.’”
Literally what?? I’m basically speechless reading this. Full transparency, this book is intense and I most definitely cried on multiple occasions. Sowards does an amazing job of making the characters and their trials feel real (and by real I mean I was sitting there eating lunch thinking that I love that we got to know about Miladin and Magdalena’s story in the prequel and follow it here like they were close friends I hadn’t heard from in a while). I’ve always enjoyed Sowards’ books but this one blew me away.
Just as Konstantin’s grandfather shared with him that his love would grow drop by drop, this story and its characters developed drop by drop until it all felt real and I could hardly put the book down. I loved the development of not only the characters themselves but also their relationships. It feels hard to put Konstantin and Suzana’s love story into words but some that come to mind are bittersweet and a rollercoaster and exhilarating and raw and real. I like that their relationship took time to develop and that even once they learned to love and trust each other (what with the arranged marriage to a stranger and all that), they still had hardship and things to work through. And the way they found joy and strength through it all as they leaned not only on each other but also their faith in God… so good. Konstantin’s relationship with those in his garrison has also been very enjoyable to follow along with (fun seems like the wrong word what with the contents of the book so we’re sticking with enjoyable).
I also admire the way Sowards portrayed Konstantin’s devotion to his family and his compassion as his motives. His growth throughout the book has made me feel like I was there too, watching him grow into the župan his people needed. Definitely good morals that we can learn from along with the rich history she writes about.
I’ve also come to love Danilo and Ivan and am very excited to follow their stories more later in the series.
Side note: I’ve been reading A.L. Sowards’ books for a while because I appreciate the cleaner content and absolutely love her writing and the way the history is so well researched and incorporated into her books. This book still holds true to that, however, it is definitely for an adult audience with both the romance and violence so I’m glad I read it as an adult and not a younger teen. It’s not necessarily gory and is still clean but addresses tough topics and went further than other books I’ve read by her. And the war and fight scenes and whatnot are, again, really intense. That being said, it was all very well done and I really enjoyed this book. Would definitely recommend.
I am so completely enthralled by this book and your writing, that I don’t feel I have adequate words to express my feelings. It is beautiful, it is gut wrenching, it is deep, it is written remarkably well. I am in awe of your writing, completely amazed at this story you created.
To say I adored both Konstantin and Suzana would be an understatement. They are both so good, rising above their circumstances to be the best people they can. I loved how Konstantin showed gentle love to Suzana, and helped her find her confidence. I loved how Suzana pushed Konstantin to trust her more, and helped him in his duties as Zupan. Their love story is so tender and sweet and I was hooked from the ver beginning.
The amount of intrigue and mystery you wove into this story kept me on my toes throughout the entire book! I did not expect what came next any time something happened. It was a wild ride that I would absolutely ride again because it was so good!
I loved the lineup of side characters, and the epilogue was so sweet. And the masterful way you weave history into a story always astounds me. Every single time I read one of your books, I come away feeling like I just learned something new, while simultaneously being entertained. I appreciate your talent and your hard work, and that you apply both so diligently to write such stellar books.
I’ve been a fan for awhile now, but if I wasn’t already, this book would land your name on my favorites list immediately. It’s so good! Just so good. Count me in for reading every single thing you write. I want it all!
Yours, Jessica
AUDIOBOOK REVIEW: This narrator is incredible. Her voices for all the different characters were top notch, and her reading was engaging and interesting. I would absolutely listen to her narrations any time.
**Many thanks to the author/publisher for the copy. A positive review was not required. All thoughts are my own.
This story is thrilling and emotional, and it has all the best things: action, romance, intrigue, betrayal, forgiveness, faith, love, honor... and history! YAY. This story is set in the Balkans in the 1300s, and I know absolutely nothing about that part of history, so this story was exciting because the plot was amazing and the characters were endearing and also because I learned so many fascinating things. A.J. Sowards did a remarkable job with the historical accuracy and making me feel absolutely immersed in that time and place. There were a couple times that the historical accuracy for societal or religious beliefs was uncomfortable (for example, that the loss of an infant, or a miscarriage as we would call it, was considered a sin 😡), but the way the characters treated and loved each other portrayed beautiful, timeless lessons that did not reinforce outdated attitudes.
I loved Suzana and Konstantin's journey and development, watching them fall in love, learn to love and trust and open up and forgive, rely on each other and on God. It was a beautiful representation of a marriage relationship.
Starting the next one immediately because I cannot pull myself away from this world.
"Love is hard to measure." He gestured to a nearby pithos of water. "That is water. It is wet, and there is enough there to soak you through. The sea is also water, but it's much larger and much deeper. Yet just because the sea is larger, it does not mean that a raindrop is not also water. Love is like that. For your grandmother and me, it came quickly, and then it grew. Looking back, what we had at the beginning of our marriage seems small compared to what it became. But that does not mean it was not love."
"Using the bed and then the wall to balance herself, she took small steps to the curtain and tugged on one end. Light streamed in. If only sunshine could banish heartache the way it cut through darkness."
"We live in a fallen world, Kostya. Sometimes we have no good choices, only ones that lead to different kinds of pain."
"You do not have to be invincible to have my love. And you do not have to be without sin to have God's forgiveness."
What a story! Anything AL Sowards writes has me completely enthralled from the very first page and this was no different. I never would’ve guessed being transported back to the late 1300s would keep me so much on the edge of my seat but wow, what a volatile time and place in history! Obviously the fictional aspect and strong emotional ties to characters add to the whole experience but I always enjoy the unique historical backgrounds to any AL Soward book.
I loved the prequel novella to this book and the continuation to the story is so good! We first meet Konstantin there, being thrown into his new role as župan at a very young age. Flash forward to the present and he is now a vassal of the Ottoman sultan whose army killed so many of his župa. And with this comes many heavy responsibilities. Paying tribute that he doesn’t have, offering soldiers to fight for a master he doesn’t support, all the while trying to recover from the blows the battle of Maritsa inflicted. Konstantin’s grandfather arranges a marriage of convenience with a wealthy merchant’s daughter to help Konstantin keep his župa alive.
There are so many things that happen over the course of this story. Trust, healing, support, love, faith, betrayal, guilt, forgiveness, survival. Konstantin and Suzana have a long, hard road ahead of them but their journey together was really beautiful. I loved seeing their relationship blossom into something real and lasting. And I really enjoyed seeing the underlying mystery come to light! The ending was extremely satisfying and I can’t wait to continue this journey into the Balkan Legends.
I received an advanced copy of this book from the author and published. I was not required to leave a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I found myself absolutely caught up in this story!! The history that Amanda packs in is just next level, and she makes the words flow so effortlessly. I really enjoyed the story of Konstantin and Suzanna. They endured SO much, but through God and their love they are able to work through it all.
I could not even believe the huge emotions that pulled at me through this book. I teared up more than once, and felt so much for the people who had to live during such hard times. They truly had so many hardships, but fought hard to find joy and light.
Beautiful, beautiful story!! Do not miss your chance to read this (and pick up the novella if you hadn’t already). I will always recommend A.L. Sowards books, and this one is coming highly recommended as well.
Thank you to the author and publisher for an advance copy. All opinions are my own.
I cannot even tell you how excited I was to read this new series. It's set in the Balkans in the late 1300s, and I was immediately drawn in to all the fascinating details - the social structure, the Christian faith, the traditions, and the different groups of people battling for land and power. It was such a compelling story with the perfect amounts of action, romance, and faith.
If you're looking for a historical romance set in a unique moment of history, start this series! I can't wait for more!
This story was so gripping and captivating! It’s the first book I’ve read by this author, but I’ll definitely be reading more of this master storyteller’s work.
It’s a beautifully written historical fiction about the Balkan wars between the Serbs and the Ottomans. I was pulled right into the story that’s full of suspense, adventure, mystery, danger, and romance. It was obviously meticulously researched, and felt so authentic. I know almost nothing about this time period, and enjoyed learning more about it as the author brilliantly brought history to life.
I really liked this book! I loved that the setting was not Regency England. I really enjoyed learning about a different time period and place. It had adventure, deception, battles, and love. A good read if you're looking for a historical romance.
The first half of this was quite good and I was enjoying it. Unfortunately, the second half seemed to slow down quite a bit until just a few chapters before the end where it picked up again.
