The Hellion, Separate Beds and Hummingbird . First time ever in hardcover! Three passionate romance novels in one volume from the New York Times bestselling "Gatekeeper of Romance". Her fans adore her and keep her sitting pretty on the bestseller lists.
LaVyrle Spencer is an American best-selling author of contemporary and historical romance novels. She has successfully published a number of books, with several of them made into movies. Twelve of her books have been New York Times bestsellers, and Spencer was inducted into the Romance Writers of America Hall of Fame in 1988.
Spencer is known for creating realistic characters and stories that focus on families rather than only the relationship between a man and woman. These "ordinary" men and women are warm and vulnerable and are always portrayed sympathetically.[1] Her heroines tend to be a mix of fire and warmth, strength, savvy and soft–heartedness who must overcome some sort of adversity, such as pregnancy, divorce, a lengthy separation, the loss of a loved one, and then undergo a catharsis. The stories center on themes of abiding love, family ties and strength in difficult times.
In the 1980s and 1990s Spencer wrote 12 New York Times Bestsellers. Her books have been sold to book clubs worldwide, and have been published around the world. Condensed versions of many of her novels have appeared in Reader's Digest and Good Housekeeping.
There was no point to this story. Other than, people are stupid and stubborn for no good reason. It was funny to read, though. The characters jump off the page with their dialogue. Every Black character is shucking and jiving…and cooking—can’t forget cooking! There were also too many descriptions on scenery and clothing. Wasn’t better than Morning Glory and I wouldn’t read it again. ‘
Separate Beds
What year did she write these dang books? They seem very Victorian, but anyway. This frustrated me to no end. I’m hardly EVER on the side of the MMC when there’s communication issues, but I found myself wanting to slap the hell out of Catherine on occasion. I had to stop and evaluate that. I forgot she was still a CHILD, and that’s my fault. Either way, it was a very frustrating book, but it strongly demonstrates how parent can make or break your trajectory in life. Whew! Though I found it well-written, I’d never read it again!
Hummingbird
I absolutely could NOT finish this one. Why is choosing between either of these duds?! David was a wet blanket (but par for the times). Jessie is just mean and he’s basically a rapist, I said what I said. Ole girl deserves better than either of these fools.
I could only give this book 4 stars because I just couldn’t make it through the third story. I hate more than anything to quit a book, but this third story was just dragging and there are too many good books in the world to waste my time on one that isn’t up to par. Loved the first two stories though.
I read hummingbird and separate beds years ago and remembered loving them. They are still so good. I hadn’t ever read the hellion before but I enjoyed it too. I was a bit surprised LaVyrle’s writing was spicier than I remembered!
The Hellion:Rachel and Tommy Lee grew up next door, fell in love and were separated by their parents. After Rachel becomes a widow, Tommy Lee re-enters her life. Is it true that “first love” lasts forever?
Separate Beds: Catherine and Clay meet on a blind date and the choices they make change their lives forever.
Hummingbird: the small town of Stuart’s Junction, Abigail McKenzie at 33 years of age, is the “old maid” at the end of the road. When the train pulls in, on board are 2 men who have managed to shoot each other and both are unconscious with serious injuries. When no one in town volunteers to help Doc Cleveland Daugherty with nursing chores, Abigail, who nursed her father for fifteen years, takes on the job and her life changes forever.

If you are looking for a easy to pick up and easy to read Romance, Lavyrle Spencer never disappoints. Of the three books, I loved Hummingbird. It was page after page of romance. Hummingbird and Hellion were both classic bad boy meets meets good girl which may be cliche but I still enjoy it well enough!
My favorites were The Hellion and Separate Beds. Hummingbird is a 1800's story and I'm not usually interested in those. I like the first one best because it's a story of an older love that comes full circle. Don't get me wrong - read them all. LaVyrle Spencer is a favorite of mine, so I'll read whatever she likes.
