A princess for whom the immortal roses bloom. A queen for whom they wither. A hero bound to both. *** Centuries before Mara held her first blade, another princess dreamt of knighthood. Born second in line to the throne, Clarissa envisioned a life unfettered by protocol. Under the tutelage of the royal guard, she thrived while being trained in the art of swordplay and the knights' ancient codes of honor.
When her elder brother dies unexpectedly, Clarissa’s destiny is forever altered, thrusting her onto a throne she never desired. In her new position as queen, Clarissa is forced to make choices benefiting the Lorcan kingdom, at the cost of straining the delicate relationship with her remaining family.
Protected from the throne’s demands, Clarissa’s younger sister, Princess Mellissa, is allowed to follow her heart’s desires. Envious of her sister’s freedom, a deep-seated jealousy brews in Clarissa—an envy that grows as Mellissa marries her love, Captain Michael, and bears him a child while Clarissa, desperate to provide the kingdom an heir, remains barren.
When Clarissa’s anger threatens his family, Michael devises a plan, which will not only irrevocably alter the fate of the daughter he seeks to save from the queen's twisted wrath, but the destiny of the immortal courts.

Let me start by saying that I hate Clarissa more now then before! I now understand how and why she became the nasty witch she is. I think this book is my favorite out of the series so far. It was very informative of the lives of Melissa and Clarissa and what happened to their brother, Robert. It shines a light on their parents and how the siblings grew up. The true stories of what really happened to them. All awhile Mara is being visited by ghost of her past to tell her these stories to help her understand what really happened and to side her in her journey now. The mystery that hangs all around this book comes to a cliffhanger of course. It has you wanting the next book to see if the roses have their own agenda with Mara and how it’s linked together.
In the 7th instalment (and thankfully not the last) at the beginning of this book I wanted to hate KL Bone for making me like Clarissa. I hated myself for even thinking she could have been a good person but in true KL Bone fashion she has yet again cemented my hate for Clarissa. KL Bone takes us back in time to before Clarissa became Queen and shows us what events led to her becoming queen. Not only that but we see the torment she put her sister through, Prince Michael and anyone else who crosses her. This story was completely riveting and the twists and turns that this story takes has me very excited for Honor of the Rose.
A backstory that follows Clarissa's rise to becoming who she is, and her as a queen. It was so good. I mean you wouldn't know from the previous books that Clarissa even had an ounce of good to her by the way she acts. But this book completely blows that idea away. Underneath all that hard exterior she was human and kind but because of events that took place she became someone different. However, I still don't care much for this character but she is essential to the overall story and I felt for her. It's a riveting read and a page turner at that. It held my interest from the first page to the very last one. So much sadness, tragedy, torment, twists and turns. An amazing story.
Finally!!! The history with Mellissa and Clarissa! How long have we been reading about the two sisters? I’m so absolutely satisfied and so fulfilled with this story!
Absolutely well written! You never quite know where Bone’s books are going, but you can be sure, it’s going to be one heck of a journey!
If you follow me and my book reviews at all, you will know that the Black Rose Series is one of my all-time favourite series. I started this series with book 1 back in 2018, and now, in 2023, I had the honour of ARC reading book 7, and it did not disappoint. I loved every minute of delving back into this fantasy world and reading the history of characters that we have met in this journey. This book made me laugh and cry, and it was everything I hoped it would be. I hope everyone gives this series a go. It's one of my favourites and deserves all the love.

Wow! Holy s.it, teary, just so so good. I have been waiting for a back story on Queen Clarissa for so long, and this is, it definitely doesn't disappoint. I literally read in just a few hours beginning to end because once I started, I could not put it down!
Daughters of the Rose is a dark fantasy "prequel" to the Tales of the Black Rose Guard series but should be read in the proper order. It takes us back to the past before Mara and Edward were leaders in the current time, so it is wise to read them in order.
In this book, you will learn what transpired in the beginning and what created the monster that is now Queen Clarissa. You will cry. You will laugh, but you will then cry again. The sadness is overwhelming and tragic. The story is beautifully written.
KL Bone does not disappoint and she will leave you yearning for the next book in the series. 5 stars and a tip of my Nerd Girl hat! This review was done in conjunction with Nerd Girl Official's book blog.
