Fae Tricksters #4

Mated to the Mad Marquess

Rate this book
The Wild Witch …

Hrafn is one of the Winged Ones—a warrior witch of old—and the last of her clan. Duty-bound to watch over the sacred resting place of her kin, her honor is challenged when a fae lord’s magical shadows chase her from her home.

The Mad Marquess . . .

Descended from the old god of legend, Malcolm Rauor possesses the ability to steal one’s sanity. The marquess views his power and the eerie shadows that serve him as an affliction, one dooming him to a lonely immortal existence.

Everything changes after a disastrous chance encounter with a wild witch on the outskirts of his estate. The woman is the mate he’d long ago lost all hope of ever finding.

Malcolm’s love language is death threats and violence. When Hrafn appears to be fluent in both, he kidnaps his mate.

Accidentally.

Now what’s he to do?

DNF at 71%.

I just cannot like this couple.

The dude is a ridiculous manwhore but finally finds his person after hundreds of years. Whatever.

And then, their courting ritual includes kidnapping and nose punches and violence of multiple kinds. At one place in the book, he becomes her jailor and he's kinda rigid about it.

Plus, she wants to leave even tho they've found this mystic connection with each other.

I just have no patience for this book anymore. It's disappointing because this author can write so well but I don't always like her characters or their relationship to each other.

Do not recommend.

There is just something special about Prater books; it always feels like coming home. It’s cosy, safe and gives you all the love you need. This book is no different.

Why did you eat his face? Ezra asked.
Hrafn blinked at him, crossing to him tentatively. The oversized shirt billowed around her. “I beg your pardon?”
Your mouth on your mate’s mouth. Were you hungry?

What do we have here, I hear you ask:

🔥 Forced proximity
🔥 Fated mates
🔥 Shadow play
🔥 Tail play
🔥 🍑 play
🔥 Chasing
🔥 cnc

We met Malcolm very early on in the series and he was a player, ladies man who was a bit too fond of wine and women. Well, he hasn’t changed much since then. He’s still the same rake we got to know and love.

As soon as he meets Hrafn, he feels the mate bond bloom in his chest and is a goner. The man doesn’t even attempt to fight his feelings. He sees her and he’s like “yep, I’ll have a bit of that, thanks”

Malcolm dropped the knife. Hrafn released his wrist, lifting her foot and tucking it under her. He grabbed for her hair, only this time, instead of grappling with her, he pulled her lips to his. They kissed with the same bruising passion they’d fought.

Now let’s talk about how hot hot hot this book was. Urgh 🥵 it has all the good bits you’d want. My only grapple was how Solis was almost like a separate entity, rather than an extension of Malcolm. And the intimate scenes with him and Hrafn almost felt like Hrafn was with another person at times. I think I just needed to remind myself that Solis is Malcolm.

As always, it’s so wonderful to get to see our cast of cameos. Susan and Margot. Our wonderful Lunar King and his Queen. References to Wanton Witch. These are the little moments I live for! Urgh. So good.

I’m deducting a star because I’m not sure how I feel about the ending. It’s a HEA for sure but I’m not sure about the marriage bit. I feel like the next story is being set up, and I can’t wait to see how that plays out.

For now, I think I need to go back and reread the whole series again. I miss everyone already

The Fae Trickster series from S.L. Prater is one of my favorite series I’ve read this year. Mated to the Mad Marquess is the latest and fourth book of the series. I love this cozy gaslamp fantasy romance world.

What we get:
• Dual POV
• Mate Bond!
• Warrior fae
• Witch & witch familiar
• WHO DID THIS TO YOU
• HURT HER AND DIE
• Shadow of all shadow daddies
• Safe word!
• Tail play
• Chase play

There’s something about a rakish marquess (but make it fae) that just really hooks me in. Malcom, MMC, has horns, a tail, and… shadows 🩶🩶 FMC Hfran is a warrior vanir fae (with wings!) who is just so badass. If you love a strong & capable FMC you’ll appreciate Hfran.

I also really appreciate MMCs who love and respect a sassy and independent FMC. Hfran immediately makes fun of Malcom’s attempts at speaking the old language and he loves it! I love it! Random side note: one time a guy told me he didn’t like that I was sassy and at the time I felt bad, but now I’ve realized fuck him! And I love MMCs who love a sassy FMC all that much more.

I love the cameos of characters from previous books. This book can be read as a standalone but you truly get full appreciation for the world and characters if you start from the beginning. Hfran’s familiar, Ezra is a delight, especially when trying to figure out mating customs 😂

It’s also spicy, these two have a very healthy sexual relationship and I loved the added bonus of tail, shadow, and chase play. If you like cozy fantasy romance with steam, get this read immediately 🩶

Thank you to SL Prater for the ARC. All opinions are my own and my review is voluntarily provided.

When death threats are the love language you know it's about to get fun!

I absolutely loved this book. Hrafn and Malcolm's story is an amazing mixture of violent threats, sweet nothings and steamy encounters!

Our heroes have to tame an old monster and face old prejudices. We'll meet some new characters, as well as some well-known faces along the way and learn about the old ways of the Vanir. While Ezra (like the familiars in the previous books) is not only a very well written side character, but also showcases the pure bond that the lifelong connection of a witch and a demon can form, Solis provides a few interesting views on Malcolm's self-control and inner monologue.

I was childishly giddy when it dawned on me that I actually already know Malcolm from the beginning of the series because I have a weak spot for the easily likeable, rakish side character and turning them into the MC in a sequel is just beyond amazing. Also, I was quite intrigued by the description of the weird way his shadow moved - I needed to know more and S.L. Prater served. The ending was so much fun as well!

Is this for you?

Mated to the Mad Marquess is a perfect addition to the Fae Tricksters series!

Despite a tumultuous first meeting, our main characters are instantly drawn together by their mate bond. But a mate bond doesn’t mean everything is perfect and easy. While Malcolm has to decide between duty and love, Hrafn has to decide between love and freedom. And that doesn’t include the escaped ancient monster threatening the local community.

This book was full of action, adventure, fighting, romance, and shadows.

Mated to the Mad Marquess has appearances from Night, Rain, and Clapa as well as from everyone’s favorite courtesans Susan and Margot.

ARC Review

Why do all the books I read lately make me cry? Is it me? Is it the beautiful writing? Who knows. This was funny and cosy and wholesome. The characters are well rounded and not tropey at all, which I deeply appreciate. As always, magic and world-building are on point in this series. Love the subversion of gender roles and the queer normative aspects too. I don't want to spoil anything but both Malcolm and Hafrn are great characters, endearing and with a hint of trauma. I love they act their ages (hundreds of years old). She trains him (thank you very much). Smut is hot. The shadow magic take was different and perfection (hello, shadow babies). Is Clapa the best secondary character ever? She might be.

Yes to everything S. L Prater writes.

I got everything I expected out of this book. I absolutely adore this series. After a handful of more stressful reads, I needed something cozier to read leisurely. Even though these books have some spice, they still have so many sweet main and side characters that you fall in love with and see such cute/funny/sweet moments with.

This book features:
- Dual POV
- mates
- gaslamp romance
- a lil’ cat and mouse action
- shadows 👀
- found family

This is such a charming and edgy read!

I loved almost everything in the story.

Being back in this world made me feel like coming home because I already knew some of the characters.

From the very beginning I fell in love with the two main characters. They are sassy and at the same time vulnerable. I felt the connection between them from the start and It's very interesting to follow their relationship.

The humor is on another lever here I laughed so much.

The secondary characters are amazing and I couldn't get enough of them.

For me the pacing of the story is great. It didn't feel rushed or too slow.

The dialogue elevated the story even more for me.

The only thing that let me down is the main villain (more like the danger for our characters). We had something given to us in the beginning and then almost nothing.

I expected more story about this danger and development at the end.

Overall loved it!

I was disappointed. I didn’t really like the characters and only read it because of Clapa’s cameos. For fucks sake he married another at the end while being true mated to the FMC bc he needed someone to look after his estate/employees while he travelled the realm with his true mate the FMC and never to return. She supported his decision because her people didn’t believe in marriage and only cared about being true mates. I don’t care for the reasoning behind it, it didn’t sit well with me that he had to marry someone else.

Spicy and sweet in all the best ways. I fell in love with the characters and couldn’t stop reading until it was finished. If I could do nothing but live in this world S L Prater has created, then I would die happy.

Be warned - if you plan to read this book, clear your schedule so you can finish it in one sitting. You’ll regret it if you don’t!

This was my second time reading something by S.L. Prater, and it did not disappoint! I don’t read enough gaslamp fantasy, but this definitely checked off all my boxes and more!

“Mated to the Mad Marquess” was Malcolm and Hrafn’s story, and it was absolutely amazing - it had all the snarky banter, incredible spice, and the perfect amount of angst.

I thought Malcolm was the perfect swoony MMC. He was kindhearted and fair, and entirely determined to do what was right, even if it hurt him in the process.

As for Hrafn, I loved that she wasn’t your typical damsel in distress type of FMC. She was bold and brave, intelligent and spunky. I also loved how capable and tenacious she was.

Malcolm and Hrafn had this fiery chemistry that I adored. Even when they hadn’t entirely accepted their mate bond (and were in fact trying to ignore it) there was something about them that kept me invested in them and their relationship.

All in all, this was a fabulous book featuring two wonderful, if stubborn, fictional characters that I loved reading about. This was most definitely a 5 star read for me!

When vi*lence is a love language ! Soooo much fire between Hrafn and Malcom, that was explosive and I wasn’t expecting so much game between them and I loved it.

I also loved the whole concept behind Malcolm's powers and the baby shadow, and his separate soul, that was truly 🔥

The story is really focused on their relationship - prisoner/warden while preparing to fight the real monster.

And obviously always happy to see Margo and Susan !! And Clapa was back 😍

✨”For tolerating the smiles and touches of others, it may have occurred to me that I should rip your still beating heart out of your chest. I could hold it in the palm of my hand before your eyes, just to remind you who it actually belongs to."

Malcolm touched his brow to hers, the base of his antlers bumping against her hair. "If that isn't the most romantic thing a woman has ever said to me, may the stars fall from the sky right now."

Fantasy Romance 📖

💜Mated To The Mad Marquess is the fourth installment in the Fae Trickster series by @slpraterwrites and this was such a fun, swoon worthy, and spicy romantasy… I loved it! While there are side characters within this story that tie into Court of Tricksters and King of Tricksters, this story can easily be enjoyed as a stand-alone.

✨There are so many elements within this story that make it a perfect romantasy read and I absolutely love this world! The angst, emotional complexity, longing, and tension coupled the captivating plot was wonderful! I loved following along as Malcom and Hrafn worked to defeat a monster plaguing their lands, all while indulging and simultaneously denying the extent of the bond that pulls at both of their hearts. Honestly, I loved that the MC’s fu€¥ed as hard as they fought 🤭

💜Shadow Daddy
💜Fae and Witches
💜Forced Proximity
💜Fated Mates
💜Sizzling Steam

✨There were so many moments when I literally laughed out loud reading this story all while swooning and feeling a little parched 😉 In true S.L Prater fashion, there are amazing side characters and their commentary was hilarious. The romance that developed yanked at my heart but soothed it all in the end!

💜I highly recommend Mated To The Mad Marquess to those who enjoy fantasy romance and romantasy! Honestly, this entire series is amazing and each story is available on KU now!

✨My most sincere and genuine thanks to S.L Prater for having me on your ARC team and for this wonderful shadow daddy and amazing FMC!

S. L. Prater just has a way of writing mates that is so unique and adorable. I always know going into her books that it is going to be cozy served with the perfect amount of spice, and this one was no different. My memory is total trash, but I believe we met our MMC Malcolm in the second book of the trickster series for a quick moment. He's an older Vanir with shadow-god powers, and his own soul is a shadow he keeps separate from himself like a sentient being (comes in handy for spicy scenes!) Hrafn--pronounced Raven--is a Vanir who was tasked with her clan to cage and protect a phantom that was once a familiar with a piece of god-soul. After three hundred years, she was the only one left. Her and Malcolm are the most precious mates. She is wild and untamed, very in touch with her Vanir ways. And Malcolm has gone soft after merely being in charge of lands for hundreds of years.
When Hrafn is falsely charged with murder and Malcolm manages to sway the king to allow her to be held captive at his estate, they train together to take down the phantom monster and he finally gets in touch with his Vanir side.
This book reminds you of how being with the right person just brings out the best side of you and how you're willing to do whatever it takes to see the person you love happy. Plus, there are adorable little shadow babies and one VERY sexy shadow soul. Is it really a threesome if the other person is still you?
Read this book if you like:
*Fated mates
*Quick, cozy reads with spice
*Shadow daddies (literally, there are little balls of shadow babies in this book. SO CUTE!)

Mated to the Mad Marquess is perfect! It's cozy, funny, angsty, spicy, and violently romantic. I have been very intrigued about Malcolm since he first appeared. Excited to know more of his story—and “his shadows”. ♡

This is an interesting, funny, and, cute turn. I can't tell how many times I laughed at Solis and his impulses. The shadows also were super adorable. That definitely brought out the definition of “Shadow Daddy”, literally.

I love the relationship of Malcolm and Hrafn. Violence as a love language, YES. They were so feisty, comfortable, and teasing with each other. That alone made this book the spiciest one yet.

This was such a comfort read to me. For all the characters together in this book or even mentioned is so heartwarming and felt like a family gathering. I didn’t expect how the story turned out, but I very much enjoyed how it turned out!

S. L. Prater is the author who makes me fall in love with Gaslamp Fantasy. I absolutely adore Fae Tricksters Series. I just can’t seem to get enough of these books. I manifest and can't wait to have these books physically.

This one might be my favorite of this series. I feel each one has gotten better than the last. They’re all so great and it was awesome to see some characters from the other books come back in this.
I loved how they both had a piece of their souls on the outside and how quickly they fell in love even though they definitely wouldn’t admit it. Awesome storyline in this one. I love the witch stories but I liked how this one was so different.
Hafrin is a bada$$, Solis made me laugh every time he spoke, and Malcolm was pretty great too.
Definitely the spiciest of these books so far.

Tropes: captor/jailer, touch him and die, touch her and die, bada$$ FMC, hurt/comfort, magic, witchy romance mates, who did this to you

As per all the books in this series the mates have to work through internal struggles to end up where they need to be.

Hrafn is an ancient vanir that had lived too long without interacting with people on a regular basis. She has scared the humans that live around her which brings Malcolm to her cottage.

Malcolm is lonely and throws himself into meaningless encounters trying to hide from himself until he meets Hrafn and wants to keep her.

Together they can find happiness if only they can get over the hurts from the past.

I loved they way they help each other find themselves and were willing to let each other go if needed so they could be truly free.

We see some familiar faces from previous books as well.

Fun, sexy read that shows you can stay true to yourself and still find happiness.

This is a book of hot and spicy scenes. THERE IS A DISCLAIMER AT THE BEGINNING FOR A REASON. Do not read this book in public. I repeat: DO NOT read this book while you’re sitting getting your hair done or your hairdresser will ask why you’re bright red and if you’re okay and then you’ll have to make up some vague lies about just being hot in your sweater. (Okay maybe that’s just me.)

“Until the stars fall, we’ll wait for her.”

*swoon* never did I ever imagine that a man whose shadow is separate from his body - a man with a TAIL - would make my heart flutter with the latest book-crush. But Malcolm was surprisingly sweet to Hrafn, even if their Vanir bloodline has strange ideas of courtship. (Broken nose? Not for me… but Malcom and Solis were into it.)

Loved Malcolm’s magic shadow ability and wish we got to see a little more of that. His friends really made the book come to life.

The epilogue was the only thing that disappointed me - what Malcolm wanted to have happen was NOT what I was thinking. 😂

✨Mated to the Mad Marquess by SL Prater✨

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

🌶️🌶️🌶️/5

This book is my favorite in the series so far! The romance between the two characters is so playful and sweet. The touch-them-and-die and fated mates tropes are two of my favorites and they’re done so well in this romance. Also I always love the way SL Prater writes familiars and companions. The book is definitely a light romance - it doesn’t go super in depth with a lot of the darker plot points which makes it a very cozy read, although sometimes I wish the author had expanded a bit more. This was also the spiciest in the series yet and it was so satisfying even though it was only a few pages out of the book.

Would definitely recommend if you’re looking for a cozy fantasy read this fall!

A chase through the woods and a broken nose. FAE romance at its finest. The village is attacked by a swarm of birds, and the witch Hrafn is blamed. Malcolm the Mad Marquess of Reedholm doesn't believe it. Malcolm and Hrafn realize there is a mate bond between them. They share many romantic and passionate moments. Problem though. He has an obligation to his estate and the people living on it. Hrafn has guarded a monster for centuries and once the monster is defeated, she like all Vanir wants to wander, to travel, see old places and visit new ones. This is the problem that needs to be resolved, Well-written novel. I should note I received an ARC from the author.

It’s a wonderful day because I’m here to discuss another installment from the magical world of S.L. Prater! I absolutely adore delving back into this series; it feels so lived in but fresh and new at the same time. Praters latest release, Mated to the Mad Marquess, is the 4th installment (but can be read as a stand alone) in the Fae Trickster series and it’s a delight.

A Little Bit of Plot
Malcolm, the Mad Marquess, is restless, or maybe lonely..or maybe both? Hrafn has been tied to her home for centuries, she yearns to travel as beings like she are wont to do. Upon their first meeting both are shocked to discover that after hundreds of years searching they’ve finally found their true mate…in each other. He has responsibilities tying him to his land, she wishes to see the world. Can they live without one another after centuries of longing only to now discover their other half?

The Compliment Sandwich

The Top Bun (The Pro)
Familiars, Fairies, and more!

One thing (of which there are many) that Prater excels at is creating engaging and delightful side characters that will win over your heart. Like with other novels in this series, our heroine Hrafn, has given a piece of her soul to a demon as an immortal companion. Here we have a very stoic bird familiar, Ezra, who can transform at will. I would say that Ezra plays more of the ‘straight man’ to the pairing of a delightful mischievous fairy named Clappa. Clappa is a snarky child sized sprite with a bitey attitude and playful yet loyal personality. Give her a button and you have a friend for life. Both Clappa and Ezra upon first meeting, soon warm up to one another:

Beside her, she found Ezra and the fairy child huddled together against the night’s chill.
“I thought you said she was a feral beast?” Hrafn teased.
The fairy used her claws to pet down Ezra’s back. He leaned into her touches. She can eat my face off, he said, so long as she keeps scratching my itches.

Prater packs so much personality into each of her characters, but in particular, these small companions as they serve as the comic relief in some of the more serious and tense scenes. These characterizations have the reader yearning for an immortal familiar of their own. Plus, you get a built in ‘ride or die’ for life, not a bad deal.

The Meat (The Con)
These books are too short or I read them too fast! She creates this lovely story, I devour it, and then have to wait for more. Urgh!

The Bottom Bun (The Pro)
An Understanding Hero

What I love about Praters novels is the understanding that each hero has for their lady. This is evident not only here but in every series she's written. Strong men who accept and advocate for their equally (or most often moreso) powerful partners. We live in a world where every step forward a woman takes is knocked back five, being able to enjoy a male hero who displays strength but not belittling the heroine in the process feels like a win. Hrafn can take care of herself, thank you very much. The same can be said for all of Prater’s heroines. They will be fine on their own, the heroes are just an added bonus.

"This was a gift he was giving her. A piece of her culture, a treasured mating ritual. Acceptance in a world that wanted to forget her. This last time with him was sacred, because no matter what happened, when the monster was dealt with, she was leaving her cage and taking these precious moments with her. Forever."

Hrafn makes the hard choices and so does Malcolm. She refuses to be caged any longer and Malcolm is unwilling to be her jailer for eternity. These decisions are made with undeniable strength by both parties. I always say that certain authors make good choices when writing, and we see that here. What both characters are willing to sacrifice for the mental and emotional well being of one another is not only realistic, but it’s the right thing to do.

As I’ve said with every S.L. Prater book, this is a must buy, must read. Delightful characterization, witty dialogue, and a magical world full of smoke monsters and witches - what more can you ask for? Plus, fam, this book is so dang hot. Like 4 alarm fire in your pants - hot. Certain scenes had me hot under the collar, my friends.

Mated to the Mad Marquess is the perfect continuation to the Fae Trickster series (while also being a standalone). It has a more high fantasy feel to it as the gaslamp elements are more subtle in this book. This atmosphere suits the main characters better since both of them are wilder than the etiquette dictates. There is also a delightful grumpy vs. sunshine setting between them.

The story is told from the dual perspectives of the main characters, Malcolm and Hrafn. In the beginning Malcolm the fae marquess seems to be in the middle of a mid(fae)life crisis and searching for a purpose. Finding a mate seems to bring him a new purpose in life. Hrafn (a winged fae witch) on the other hand has been chained by duty for centuries and when she is set free, a mate feels like another chain. The characters have wonderful depth and their traumas bring forth their greatest struggles.

Mixed with all of this are a wonderful set of other characters: a shadow soul, a hawk familiar, bawdy courtisans, a bloodthirsty tiny fairy, and adorable shadow babies. This lot brings on many funny and hearthwarming moments that leaves the reader warm and fuzzy. And don’t forget the spice! It gets pretty hot on occasion… The biggest tragedy is when a whole red wine barrel is wasted. I’m still not over it. Despite this, the book is a wonderful read and highly recommended for friends of fantasy and/or romance.

I received an ARC copy and this my honest opinion that has been left voluntarily.

I had so much fun with this read! The main characters are so cute in their stabby ways of expressing love! That might not sound logical, but it is xD The spice is *chef's kiss* The side characters are cute as well, with Clapa stealing the show. Mates to the mad marquess may be S.L. Prater’s best book yet in this series of Fae Tricksters.
It’s an excellent story of how love sometimes can cause an extreme conflict within you, and about the choices you make for love.

Hrafn is a centuries old fae, who lives with a heavy burden that has turned her home into a cage. When she breaks out of that cage, all she wants is to be free and true to her nature - but then she meets Malcolm. They are fated mates and the bond is strong; will she choose her freedom or will she choose Malcolm? And to what lengths will Malcolm go to keep her? Or does he trust in the bond and sets her free to let her choose for herself?
Add an external threat; a demon familiair and adorable shadow babies and you have an excellent winner.

Mated to the mad marquess is about fated mates, whose love language is violence. Hrafn is vicious and Malcolm meets her head on.
Our favorite little faerie baby Clapa makes an appearance as do everybody’s favorite courtisanes.

Where Hrafn is a strong, badd-ass heroine, Malcolm is the swooniest of heroes.
If this review did not convince you to read this book; maybe this quote will:

“I’m nourished by your smiles. They’re rare and hard-earned. Like a diamond.” He brushed his knuckles across her cheeks. “I think I could live off of them and not need another thing.”

My one flaw with the last book, wedded to the wanton witch, regarding a mate vs. A true mate was explained in this book which I’m happy about!!

In regards to this book, I loved Malcom and how he bickered with himself (solis). I felt it showed how conflicted Malcom was in regards to his choices very well! I also liked the shadow babies they were cute.

I do have a question regarding solis though. How individual was he? Like did him and Malcom always have different opinions and or like they constantly converse with each other? Or was solis just a physical representation of when Malcom was conflicted with himself?

Another thing about this book was the romance. The spicy scenes had plot, but were still dirty. It was well written and intriguing. Also I totally misread the meaning of the last few paragraphs of the book (however I think it was written that way on purpose).

Anyways I really liked this book! It was a cute fast read with good smut! I’d like to also thank the author for giving me and ARC copy of this book for a honest review!

I love the books by S.L. Prater. They are usually soft gas lamps and great in between books of my heavier reading. This was no exception. I loved the fast pace, the action and the chemistry between the two main characters was perfect. Her familiar was one of my more favorite characters as he reminded me of Zazu from Lion King....a little neurotic, very protective and somewhat pessimistic world view. She did such a great job weaving the story about doing what's right for you versus doing what's right for your family and being a martyr to 'responsibility'. I really liked the theme of not everyone is as they seem and some people just hate because that's all they know how to do and want nothing but to make everyone else as miserable as them.

If you want a fast paced, gas lamp with a smidgen of spice thrown in, then this is a GREAT option. These books are always incredibly fun.
