There are places in this world where you can enter, but never leave...
After witnessing and helping to solve many cases with FBI agent Emma Griffin, PI Dean Steele should get an honorary FBI badge as a reward. With Fall and its festivities rapidly approaching, Dean gets an urgent call. Four years ago, in the quiet town of Harper, three teens were murdered against the backdrop of Halloween. Their body parts were found in the most bewildering way. The body count has now risen and there are still no answers.
When the family of the first victim hires Dean to get to the bottom of it, he is plunged in a dark and terrifying web of secrets. Now, it’s up to Dean to learn who the true Hallows Eve killer is before he builds another scarecrow out of his victims.
This is another edition of Dean's series where he is on the trail of a seriel killer. Things are not what it seems and of course the local police don't appreciate his interference in their town. I like that Xavier is along to help in the case, he adds so much more to the story. His different view only helps Dean to solve this complicated case. The story is interesting with a lot going on. I am looking forward to reading more of Dean's adventures as well as learning more about what was going on with Brielle.
I originally wanted to give this book 3 stars. I have read all of the Emma Griffin series, Ava James, and now Dean Steele. I feel the Halloween themed corn maze murders have been done more than once. Also, I understand some people may start a series in the middle, but too much time is taken to go over the characters backstory. I love the character of Xavier, but I feel his backstory has been done again and again. I thought the book really picked up and became interesting in the second half and felt that it deserved four stars just for that.
I stumbled onto AJ Rivers book by accident and have been hooked ever since. I really love all of her series. Of course Emma FBI is my favorite but I gotta say Dean and his sidekick Xavier are a very close second. It’s the partnership you never knew you wanted. They take care of each other and I can’t wait to see what trouble they get into next. This book is full of twists and turns galore. And i love it when all of AJ’s characters show up in each others series.
OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!! I truly loved this book. I took my time reading it because I knew there would be a long time before the next one came out. I spent the whole time thinking Seth was the killer, but tried to figure out who killed him. I didn't truly know who the second murderer was. I was very surprised when he was named. I am glad that Hannah didn't kill him and that Dean caught him. I can't wait for the next book.
Four years ago, there were two teenagers murdered and set up in a Halloween-themed corn maze where one of the victims was discovered by his twin sister. Now, the family of the twin wants answers they never received, so they call in Dean Steele to investigate. As the pieces of the puzzle are uncovered, the plot is even thicker and twisted than anyone ever thought. Can Dean get to the bottom of it before it's too late?
This is the third novel in a well written series of mysteries. The build up in this one kept me up most of the night to finish. Not always police friendly but not critical of them either. I want to be Dean Steele or A.J. Rivers when I grow up! The suspense kept me guessing, the end not a disappointment. The character development was interesting. I have met an Xavior aka X in my lifetime. Wish I knew Dean!!!
Murder once/twice/and a few times over. Where does it start or end? And everyone going in circles with no way out, or so it seems. But one person will go over it many, many times. And he will get it right in the end. And the killer will eventually pay.
I happened to be reading this book during a rain storm and had to close all my curtains it was that good. I love Dean and Xavier is quirky and funny with such a touch of innocence about him he makes me laugh. The plot has great twists and I was binge reading till the very last page. I can’t wait to dive back into these characters. I have a feeling I’m going to enjoy the next book.
A killer well hidden. Biding his time before he kills again. Will Dean and Xavier find him in time before he kills again? Continue the Dean Steele mystery and enjoy the next book in this series, just in time for Halloween!
An old - assumed solved - series of murders seem to be revisited by a copycat, since the original suspect ended up murdered a few years after the original murders.
Meanwhile, the mystery surrounding Brielle’s death slowly unfolds.
I couldn’t put it down and now I can’t wait for Book 4. I still struggle with remembering who all the characters (not the main ones, of course) are. There are more than my senior brain can keep straight. Keep writing about my favorite PI and FBI special agents, AJ.
I loved this story. The unique plot and fast pace just confirmed author's writing talent. It has everything what you expect from the thriller and will keep you grasping for a deep breath, after you held it for too long. Bravo
Just finished this book and was extremely surprised at the storyline and the ending. There were so many different characters who could be the bad person. So well written, it kept you guessing until the very end. Highly recommend this series - can't wait for book 4.
Definitely interesting and I love Xavier’s character development. Onto the next Dean Steele novel. A.J. Rivers does not disappoint I may even try the Ava James series although she’s no Emma.
Dean & Xavier are an awesome series! This is another twisted pager turner! They are hired to find out who murdered the first in a series of Halloween gruesome murders. A teenage boy dressed as a scarecrow & nailed to a post.
This book is the best in the 3 Dean books that I have read. It sticks to the investigation. There are not too many flashbacks or blackouts to confuse the reader. It was a little bit Scooby Doo -ish at the end, but I liked this one.
The individual responsible for the killings after the first three was a surprise. I kept reading so I would know the answer. Dean and Xavier were certainly busy solving the problem. Good reading.
From start to finish, it’s a fun read. I look forward to reading more by this author. I wasn’t surprised by the eventual revelation of the killer but it was satisfying getting there.
I love this Dean Steele series. Like the other AJ Rivers series, it's full of action, with a few hmmm moments and smiles thrown in. I can't wait for the next installment.
This is an exciting thriller. I could not put this book down. This book started out slow but it got very exciting. I highly recommend this book and this series.
Dean Steele investigates the serial killer that has terrorized a small town on Halloween.... Hallow Eve Killer. Several times I thought I had it figured out but then found out I was wrong.
