Don’t believe everything you are told!
Mackina is an action packed story that forces the main characters, Elps and Jake, to question the world around them, even question the ones they love. This science fiction romp, like many, is set after a war in a post-apocalyptic survival where humanity and humans must account for their choices and their actions that lead to this destruction. Elps, Jake and the other students, once they discover the secrets, must decide who to believe, who to fight for! Do you fight for “God and country” or “heart and home”?

Though the story mainly follows Jake, the hardest choices are made by Elps. The real-world aspect of war and politics is very evident and at times, I thought the writer was intentional in connecting current news to a timeless story.

The story has many twists and turns that lead to a few “a-ha” moments and of course there is the secret... the key to everything! It sets up for the other books which, I can’t wait to read and has some great points for class discussion as well as essay potential ( a testament to my professors on ‘close reading’).
